Chapter 101 The Two-Sided Suspense of the Defected Warrior

Su Wanqing stood in front of the projection screen in the base command room, watching the real-time monitoring footage of the abandoned laboratory in the mining area.

The gray dust swirled in the beams of the searchlights, giving the scene a lifeless atmosphere.

Several modified off-road vehicles were parked at the entrance, and several defectors wearing black tactical vests were unloading supplies from the vehicles.

"The supply transaction is complete." Lu Zhao's voice came from the communicator. He was in charge of setting up multiple monitoring systems around the mining area to ensure that the movements of the defecting soldiers were clearly visible.

"The fuel and medical supplies they provided are enough to sustain us for a while. But... the situation is a bit complicated."

"What's going on?" Su Wanqing asked, her eyes never leaving the screen.

“According to my monitoring, three members of the defector team had contact with a special supply transport team inside the base in the past week. The frequency wasn’t very high, but it definitely happened.” Lu Zhao’s tone was calm and precise, like a sophisticated instrument conveying only objective facts.

Xiao Ran frowned. "Special supplies transport team? That's the team responsible for transporting the base's core research results to the higher levels. What are they doing mixing with the defectors?"

“That’s exactly what makes me uneasy,” Lu Zhao replied. “The supplies the transport team handles are mostly things that are only effective against various mutants, such as specially made inhibitors. The defectors may want these for better survival, but we can’t rule out other possibilities.”

Su Wanqing's heart skipped a beat. "Xiao Ran, you spoke with them before. What did you learn from the conversation?"

Xiao Ran recalled the scene during yesterday's transaction. "They were vague about their responsibility for the virus leak, always downplaying the issue. On the surface, they expressed dissatisfaction with the base, saying they were being used by higher-ups, but they hesitated to elaborate on the specific details. I tried to get them to reveal more information, but they always steered the conversation to survival issues."

Lin Che's voice broke the silence over the communicator. "Maybe they're just scared. After all, betraying the base is tantamount to making an enemy of the entire world. They need time to sort out their thoughts."

"Che, your thinking is too optimistic." A cold voice suddenly cut in, carrying an unquestionable authority.

It was night.

"Night, what are your thoughts?" Su Wanqing asked.

“Anyone who hasn’t completely left the base should not be trusted. They may just be gathering intelligence or waiting for an opportunity to turn against you.” Night’s voice remained cold, like an unchanging block of ice.

“The fact that they still maintain contact with al-Qaeda is a huge risk in itself.”

Lin Che's tone was somewhat agitated. "But we have already reached an agreement with them, and they have provided us with the supplies we urgently need. It would be too hasty to doubt them now."

"An agreement?" Night's rebuttal was as sharp as a razor's edge. "An agreement only applies when both sides are evenly matched. In our current situation, we rely on their resources, while they know our weaknesses. This unbalanced relationship will only make us more dangerous."

Lin Che's voice carried a hint of weariness. "I know you're worried about me, worried that I'll be used by them. But we can't see everyone as an enemy; at the very least, we have to give them a chance."

Su Wanqing interrupted their argument. "Alright, quiet down. Che, I understand your concerns, and Ye, your worries are valid. We can't jump to conclusions now."

She turned to Lu Zhao and said, "Strengthen surveillance and closely monitor every move of the defecting soldiers. Pay special attention to their contact with people inside the base. Report any suspicious activity to me immediately."

"Understood," Lu Zhao replied quickly.

"Xiao Ran, go and talk to the leader of the defectors, the one named Markov, again. Tell him we're grateful for the supplies they provided, and also ask if they've encountered any difficulties recently, or if they need any help from us. Remember to be sincere and don't let them realize our intentions."

Xiao Ran nodded. "I'll be careful."

“Night,” Su Wanqing looked at Lin Che, her tone calm but carrying a hint of pressure.

"Through Che, convey my orders to the team members: remain vigilant against defectors, but do not act rashly. Await my next instructions, and do not escalate the conflict without solid evidence."

Ye didn't speak, but simply nodded slightly, her consciousness once again sinking into the depths of Lin Che's mind.

Under the influence of the night, Lin Che's face became even paler, and his body trembled slightly.

He struggled to break free from Ye's control, but to no avail. He knew Ye's power far surpassed his own; he was now like a manipulated puppet, completely at Ye's mercy. "Su Wanqing, why do you believe Ye? He doesn't trust anyone!"

Lin Che wailed inwardly, but his voice could not be heard.

Su Wanqing seemed to sense Lin Che's unease. She turned her head and glanced at him gently, her eyes filled with worry.

But she didn't stop; instead, she went straight to the control panel in the command center.

She opened a file containing the identity information of a defector and studied it carefully.

According to the data, most of these people are low-level staff members within the base, who are poorly treated and generally dissatisfied with the base's senior management.

In the early stages of the virus outbreak, instead of joining the base's security forces immediately, they chose to flee.

Later, they gathered again near the mining area and formed the current defector team.

"Lu Zhao, conduct a more detailed analysis of their movements. See where they've been recently and who they've been in contact with," Su Wanqing ordered.

"In progress," Lu Zhao replied.

Time ticked by, and the atmosphere in the command center grew increasingly tense.

Everyone held their breath, waiting for Lu Zhao's analysis.

Suddenly, Lu Zhao's voice broke the silence through the communicator.

"I've discovered some new clues. At least two members of the defector squad may still be carrying out missions inside the base!"

"What?" A look of surprise flashed across Su Wanqing's eyes. "You mean, they're still working for the base?"

"Yes. According to my analysis, these two defectors have been regularly submitting intelligence reports to the base's security department in recent days. The reports contain information about anomalies around the mining area, which is not of great value, but is enough to cover up their true identities."

"They're double agents!" Xiao Ran said angrily. "They're providing us with supplies while simultaneously supplying intelligence to the base, trying to slip through our fingers!"

Su Wanqing took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "Lu Zhao, confirm their identities and find out exactly what they are doing for the base."

"Confirming," Lu Zhao replied.

Su Wanqing was silent for a moment, then said, "Suspend further contact with the defector soldiers."

"Inform Xiao Ran not to speak with Markov for the time being. Let's observe for a while and see what their next move is."

"Understood," Xiao Ran replied.

The voice of night echoed in Lin Che's mind once more. "Is this what you wanted, Su Wanqing? To let those traitors slip through the cracks and continue to jeopardize our plans?"

Lin Che closed his eyes in pain, unsure how to answer.

He both wanted to trust the defectors and feared they would betray him again.

He was torn apart by the conflict between Ye and Su Wanqing, his heart filled with struggle and pain.

"We must be careful." Su Wanqing's voice echoed in the command room, carrying a hint of firmness and determination.

"Don't easily trust anyone, and don't easily give up any possible opportunity. This battle in the apocalypse is full of variables, and we must always be vigilant in order to survive."
