Chapter 721 Going to Work at the Construction Site

Xia Lu heard that familiar phrase again.

"Your younger brother is still small, can't you give in to him?"

Xia Lu had just finished the college entrance examination and was happily thinking the day before that her grades must be very good and she would definitely be able to choose a good university.

When Xia Lu heard her mother say that the family couldn't afford to send both children to school, she almost instinctively replied, "I understand, Mom."

When she realized what was said, her eyes widened in disbelief, and her voice trembled slightly, "Mom, what does this mean?"

"Lulu." Her mother held Xia Lu's hand, tears streaming down her face, "Mom knows this is unfair to you, but if there were a better way, Mom wouldn't want to treat you like this..."

That was the first time Xia Lu refused her mother's request. "Mom, I don't want to. I can agree to anything else, but not this. I want to go to school. I love reading!"

After saying that, she looked at her mother nervously and heard her mother's self-reproachful voice, "I'm sorry, Lulu, it's my fault. I'll think of something else."

When Xia Lu woke up, she found the house eerily quiet; there was no one there.

She searched around her home several times but couldn't find any of her family members.

Xia Lu was very anxious and couldn't eat anything all day.

It wasn't until late at night that Mom and Dad dragged their exhausted bodies home.

"Mom and Dad, where did you go? Why are you so late? Where's my little brother?" Xia Lu asked anxiously.

Xia's father said, "Lulu, I left in a hurry today and forgot to tell you that your mother and I will be working at the construction site together from now on, leaving at 5:30 every morning."

Xia's mother said, "By the way, your younger brother recently went to stay at his maternal grandmother's house, and I guess he will have to stay there from now on. I have to go to work at the construction site, so I won't be able to cook for him at home."

"Go to work on a construction site?" Xia Lu's face immediately showed disbelief. Her pupils widened as she noticed that her parents' hands were covered with bandages and their clothes were stained with dirt and grime.

In the past, my father would always be wearing a clean white shirt, carrying a briefcase, and driving to work with a bright and energetic look on his face.

Mom dresses neatly and attractively, occasionally meeting up with friends, or leisurely strolling through the market to buy groceries and cook a hot meal at home.

But now?

They were dressed in dusty clothes, their faces haggard, doing heavy manual labor on the dusty construction site...

Xia Lu's nose suddenly stung with tears; just thinking about it made her feel very sad.

Why does this happen?

That night, she lay in bed crying all night long.

She felt she couldn't be so selfish; her parents had already sacrificed so much for the family.

With such a sudden turn of events, how can she possibly focus on her studies? She should be trying to share the burden.

The next day, Xia Lu didn't get up until the afternoon, and there was still no one at home.

She cooked herself a bowl of noodles, cleaned the house, and then went back to her room and dragged out a suitcase that she hadn't used in a long time from under her bed.

She cleaned the suitcase and packed the clothes inside one by one.

Late at night, the parents still returned home covered in exhaustion and mud.

While they were taking a shower, Xia Lu cooked some late-night snacks.

"Dad, Mom, I've cooked you some egg noodles. Eat them while they're hot." She placed two bowls of noodles on the table.

Xia's mother looked at her with gentle eyes, "Silly Lulu, I know you feel sorry for your mother, but I'm too tired to eat. You eat."

“I don’t have much of an appetite either,” Xia’s father sighed. “But Lulu cooked this so late, so even if I don’t have an appetite, I have to finish it.”

Hearing this, Xia's mother nodded, "Then I'll eat some too. Lulu, we can share." "Okay." Xia Lu turned around and went to the sterilizing cabinet to get a bowl and chopsticks.

While eating his noodles, Xia's father said, "Lulu, don't wait for us to come back tomorrow night. Go to bed early."

"Yes," Xia's mother said helplessly, "Your father and I have no choice but to stay up late, so you shouldn't stay up late anymore."

Xia Lu put down her chopsticks and said softly, "Dad, Mom, I've made up my mind."

Xia's father and mother exchanged a glance.

Xia's mother asked in confusion, "Lulu, what have you decided? Which school do you want to choose? The college entrance exam scores haven't been released yet, have they?"

“No, it’s not this.” Xia Lu shook her head, lowered her eyes, and said softly, “I’ve made up my mind, I’m not going to university.”

"Why?" Xia's father frowned. "Lulu, don't overthink it. Your mother and I will definitely find a way to cover your tuition and living expenses. Don't worry about anything. Just choose a school you like and study the major you want."

Xia's mother hurriedly said, "Yes, Lulu, your father and I have found jobs. We will definitely be able to send you and your brother to school. It was my fault that day. I shouldn't have said those things to you and put you under psychological pressure."

"No." Xia Lu shook her head vigorously, her voice trembling with tears. "It's not Mom's fault, it's just that I don't want to study anymore."

At that moment, she realized how incredibly foolish she had been.

For so many years, I've actually doubted whether my parents love me.

They were willing to work hard under the sun and rain on the construction site so that she could go to university...

How could she doubt her parents' love?
She really shouldn't have done that!

"Lulu, don't say things like that anymore," Xia's father said sternly. "Your task now is to study hard."

Xia Lu didn't say anything, she just rushed over and hugged them.

On the day she left home, she didn't disturb her parents. She left only a letter and quietly left with a small suitcase containing a few changes of clothes.

She didn't want her parents to work too hard, nor did she want her younger brother to live a life of dependence on others.

Xia Lu borrowed two thousand yuan online and struggled to find a job in a strange city where she had no relatives or friends.

She initially submitted her resume online, only to realize she had been scammed during the interview.

That person didn't hire a proper employee, but a lover.

Xia Lu was so frightened that she ran away in a panic.

After that, she learned to be smart and stopped going to any places that looked small or whose addresses didn't resemble office areas.

But two thousand yuan won't last long at all.

To save money, Xia Lu ate steamed buns every day.

When her parents called, she didn't want them to worry, so she lied and said she had found a great job.

She was practically begging under the overpass with a basin.

Xia Lu wanted to find a job as a junior clerk. A company notified her to start work, but on her first day, they asked her to pay 3,000 yuan for training.

Although she was new to the workforce, she knew that companies that made employees pay money were problematic, so she quickly made an excuse and ran away.

Xia Lu was constantly hitting roadblocks in her job search, and at that point, she felt like dying.

Standing on the overpass, watching the passing vehicles, she had a fleeting impulse to jump and end it all.

But reason kept reminding her that she must not be defeated by the small setbacks in life.

She didn't believe she wouldn't be able to find a job.
