Chapter 223. You are the only variable.

As Su Yaoyao looked at the images, especially the broken eggs and the suffering chicks, her eyes were filled with genuine compassion.

As a holy woman, she possesses an extraordinary capacity for empathy for life, especially new and fragile life. She can feel that call, that resonance from the depths of her blood.

She took a deep breath, stepped forward, and stood shoulder to shoulder with Augustine and Lucia, looking at Lan Yi.

“I have seen your evidence, and I have felt your urgency and pain.” Her voice was soft yet firm. “It’s not that I don’t believe you, nor that I am unwilling to help.”

Her words ignited a glimmer of hope in Lan Yi's eyes, but Augustine and the others instantly tensed up.

“But,” Su Yaoyao’s tone shifted, becoming extremely serious, “I need to know what exactly your so-called ‘taking away’ and ‘saving’ means? What price do I have to pay? How exactly will my power be used? And what impact will all of this have on me and my family?”

Her gaze was clear and firm as she looked directly at Lan Yi: "Saving a race is a great cause, but first and foremost, I am myself, the wife of my beastmen, and their partner. I cannot rashly agree to go with you to a completely unfamiliar interstellar space without knowing any of the consequences. This is not prudence; it is irresponsibility towards myself and everyone else."

“So, King Yi,” Su Yaoyao said solemnly, “please stay here for these ten days. We need in-depth communication. You need to show me and my husbands more information. We need to find a way together… perhaps without sacrificing my life and happiness, to try to help your people.”

“These ten days are not a delay, but a necessary preparation period that is also for your and your people’s sake.”

Su Yaoyao's words were reasonable and well-founded, expressing sympathy while upholding her bottom line, thus throwing the difficult question back to Lan Yi. Should he choose cooperation and communication, or persist with his unquestionable, forceful plunder?
All eyes were once again focused on the Eagle King from the stars. What choice would he make?

Lan Yi narrowed his sharp silver eyes slightly, scrutinizing Su Yaoyao like a hawk locking onto its prey.

Her words were clear, calm, and even carried a kind of boldness he had not anticipated.

She wasn't begging; she was setting conditions, demanding an equal negotiation. This completely overturned his initial, simplistic plan to "find and take away."

The air seemed to freeze. The beastmen held their breath, and Augustine's muscles tensed, ready to deal with any unexpected situation.

After a long while, the icy aura surrounding Lan Yi seemed to subtly recede. His jawline remained taut, but when he spoke, there was something else in his cold tone—perhaps an unfamiliar…acknowledgment?
“Your request is reasonable.” He practically spat out these words, clearly rarely yielding to anyone. “But I must remind you, time is the most precious thing to our people. Ten days, no more.”

The instrument on his wrist flashed, projecting a more complex interstellar scene, with one route highlighted, ending at a slightly gray planet.

"This is the latest data stream from the Winged Race's home planet, 'Skywing City.' The energy decay rate has accelerated by another 0.7 percentage points. Every day of delay means more fledglings will be unable to open their eyes, and more warriors will lose the power to soar."

His gaze fixed intently on Su Yaoyao again: "I can tell you what you need to know. But you must understand that there is no 'trying,' only 'you must succeed.' You are the only variable."

Rig couldn't help but say coldly, "Nothing is 'must'! Yao Yao's safety and wishes come first!" Lan Yi's silver eyes finally glanced at him sparingly, with the indifference of a higher civilization towards "primitive" bestiality: "When the threat of annihilation hangs over our heads, the individual's will often has to give way to the survival of the collective. This is the cruel law of the universe."

"You!" Rig was furious, but Su Yaoyao gently pressed down on his arm.

"Laws are made by people, and they can also be changed by people." Su Yaoyao's voice remained calm, yet it carried a strange power that seemed to soothe restless souls.

"At least for these ten days, let us try to find a way that doesn't have to follow your cruelest rules. Now, Wing King, do you need some rest? There are guest rooms in the castle."

Lan Yi seemed unfamiliar with the word "rest," and he shook his head:

"No need. I just need a quiet space. I will adjust the energy consumption of interstellar jumps myself."

He paused, then added, his tone more like giving an order than a request:

"Give me a location where I can receive clear interstellar signals. I need to continuously receive data from my home planet and ensure I maintain contact with my fleet."

His attitude remained aloof, but at least Su Yaoyao had forcibly opened the channels of communication.

Mingye stepped forward at the opportune moment, his expression regaining its usual calm: "Come with me, Your Highness. The observatory in the west wing of the castle has the best signal and is also quiet enough."

Lan Yi didn't say much, but gave Su Yaoyao one last deep look, his gaze complex and unreadable, before turning and following Ming Ye out of the hall. His blue wing ornaments traced a cold, hard arc in the air.

Only after his figure completely disappeared did the suffocating oppressive feeling in the auditorium subside slightly.

Rig immediately turned around and hugged Su Yaoyao tightly, his voice filled with lingering fear and anger: "Yaoyao! How could you let him stay! It was too dangerous!"

Lucia gripped her hand with concern: "His power is strange, and his purpose is clear. I'm worried..."

“I know, I know everything.” Su Yaoyao hugged them back, her voice gentle yet firm, “But avoidance and direct conflict won’t solve the problem. The technology and power he’s displayed could have unpredictable consequences if we forcefully confront him. And…”

She gently pushed them aside and looked at her husbands. “He’s telling the truth. I can feel it… that mournful cry and call from the distant stars, faint but real. His people are truly suffering.”

Her eyes revealed the innate compassion of a saint: "If my power can truly help them, I am willing to learn and try. But I will never leave you, and I will never sacrifice ourselves to save others. Therefore, we need these ten days."

She looked at the crowd, her eyes pleading for their support: "We need to figure everything out: how exactly my power can help the Winged Clan, their specific situation, and... can we find a way to help them without tearing us apart?"
