Chapter 190. The Blasphemous Chamber
Roland suddenly lowered his voice: "Things are different now. The Holy Knights are here, and you can regain your freedom." He lowered his sword slightly. "Put down your weapons, and I, in the name of the Holy Knights Commander, guarantee your safety."
The bear-man bodyguard suddenly let out a painful whimper, his massive body swaying slightly: "I...I've had enough!" He trembled as he removed his helmet, revealing a scarred face. "Last month, she sent my brother to the lab."
The tiger-man bodyguard finally retracted his claws and stepped aside to clear a path: "Turn right at the end of the east corridor. She's escaping to the secret laboratory."
The paladins swept through the cleared passage like silver whirlwinds. Roland patted one of the bear-man bodyguards on the shoulder as he passed: "Go to the basement and help with the rescue; your loved ones might still be there."
Doris's red dress stood like a bloodstain in the dimly lit corridor. Her high heels tapped rapidly on the stone slabs, and her trembling fingers traced the buttons on the wall, activating a series of defensive mechanisms. Heavy gates slammed shut behind her, spewing out deadly poisonous mist.
"Stop them! At all costs!" she screamed into the communication crystal, her voice echoing in the empty corridor, still thinking that bodyguards would risk their lives for her.
Roland's figure abruptly stopped before the first gate. He raised his Holy Crystal Longsword. "Back off!" he warned the paladins behind him. With a clear, resounding clang of the sword, holy energy surged forth like a tidal wave, cleaving the heavy metal gate in two.
"Split up!" Roland ordered. "First team, clear the traps! Second team, follow me!"
Doris glanced back and saw the silver armor peeking through the poisonous fog, and bit her lip in terror. Blood dripped down her delicate chin, but she didn't notice. Turning the last corner, the laboratory door was just a stone's throw away—
A flash of silver light suddenly swept past her ear and pierced the door frame in front of her with a clang. Doris froze on the spot, a strand of golden hair slowly drifting down.
“Take another step, and the next arrow will pierce your knee.” Roland’s voice came from behind, chillingly calm.
Doris slowly turned around and saw Roland standing at the end of the corridor, his longbow still raised. Caesar and three other paladins flanked them from both sides, blocking all escape routes.
"You think this is the end?" Doris suddenly grinned maliciously, her fingers stealthily reaching for the detonator at her waist. "I'd rather destroy everything—"
With a soft "ding," a holy light bullet the size of a silver coin struck her wrist.
The detonator fell to the ground with a thud, only to be caught by Caesar in a swift movement. Inside the ventilation duct at the top of the corridor, a young paladin holstered his small crossbow.
Roland said coldly, "Take us to the lab, let's go!"
Roland, leading Doris, followed the directions and passed through a narrow tunnel to a spacious underground space. Dozens of transparent incubation chambers were placed there, each containing bizarre creatures—composed of different animal forms and some indescribable hybrids.
“A gene fusion experiment.” Roland’s voice trembled with rage. “How dare you desecrate life to such an extent!”
Doris suddenly burst into laughter: "You think that's all? Look at those documents! Half the empire's nobles were involved! We could have created the most powerful warrior legion ever!"
Caesar picked up a list from the lab table, which prominently displayed the names of several high-ranking officials of the Empire and the amounts they had invested. He exchanged a grave look with Roland—this was far more extensive than they had imagined.
"Take everything, not a single document can be left out," Roland ordered. "As for her," he looked at Doris, who was slumped on the ground, "she will face trial by the Imperial Supreme Court."
As the setting sun cast long shadows across the fortress, the last victim was carried onto a medical wagon. Roland stood atop the fortress, gazing towards the distant capital. He knew this was no simple rescue operation, but the beginning of a storm that would shake the very foundations of the empire. “Commander,” Caesar approached him, “we’ve discovered something else deep within the laboratory. You’d better go see it for yourself.”
Roland nodded, and as he turned, his cloak fluttered in the wind, the last ray of sunlight reflecting off his silver armor like an inextinguishable flame of hope in the darkness.
Roland followed Caesar through the main area of the laboratory, the air growing colder as they went deeper. The lights on the walls flickered erratically, casting long, distorted shadows. Finally, they stopped before an iron door locked by multiple seals.
“We’ve tried everything, but we can’t open it,” Caesar said in a low voice.
Roland turned to Doris, who was being escorted away: "Open it."
Doris's lips curled into a sinister smile: "Are you sure you want to see this? Some truths can drive people mad."
"Enough with the nonsense!" Caesar shouted sternly.
Doris shrugged and made a few labored hand gestures with her handcuffed hands. The runes on the iron gate lit up one by one, emitting a teeth-grinding metallic scraping sound, and slowly opened.
A pungent smell of preservatives wafted through the air. Roland raised the Holy Crystal Sword, its light illuminating the room—
Dozens of transparent incubation chambers were neatly arranged, each containing a "replica." Even more chilling was that these replicas all resembled high-ranking figures of the empire: the Minister of Finance, a cardinal, and even His Majesty himself.
“By the Beast God.” Caesar’s voice trembled.
“Surprised?” Doris laughed smugly. “You thought we were just researching orcs? No, we’re creating the perfect replacement. Soon, the entire empire will be under our control.”
Roland pressed the tip of his sword against Doris's throat: "How dare you desecrate royal authority!"
"Blasphemy?" Doris scoffed. "We're saving the Empire! Those decaying old fogies don't understand what true power is!"
Just then, an alarm suddenly beeped from one of the deepest incubation chambers. The liquid inside began to drain rapidly, and a person who looked exactly like Roland slowly opened his eyes.
“No, that’s impossible,” Roland said, taking a step back.
……
Inside the royal council chamber, crystal chandeliers illuminated the opulent hall as if it were daytime. Augustine V sat on his throne, the parchment list crumpled in his hand. The candlelight flickered in his deep eyes, reflecting an undisguised shock and anger.
“Your Majesty,” Roland knelt on one knee, his silver armor still bearing the marks of battle, “everyone on this list has a direct connection to Doris’s laboratory.”
