Chapter 124 "Did the Leader Approve?"

“She was stolen by human traffickers right after she was born.” Meng Jiusi’s eyes were calm, and her voice was even. “I also have a twin brother, who is my third brother. I have two older brothers and a younger sister. My sister got married to a military officer, and they have four children, the twins we saw before…”

Grandpa Meng remembered the two boys, "Were they those clever little boys?"

“Yes, that’s them.” Meng Jiusi smiled. “They are my nephews. I am their fourth uncle.”

Grandpa Meng hadn't seen his grandson so happy in a long time, and he also became cheerful.

"I can tell you really like your sister."

It's good that the grandson wasn't abandoned.

Feeling embarrassed, Meng Jiusi still said, "She's fine."

His sister looked at him without a trace of disgust; her eyes were bright and clear. She even brought him dumplings and peach shortbread, and to keep him from getting bitten by mosquitoes, she brought him mosquito repellent... She was really, really kind.

"Grandpa is so happy for you to have met your real family." Grandpa Meng patted his grandson's head, his weathered face full of a gratified smile.

The skinny little black monkey from back then has found its family.

Meng Jiusi added, "I told them... I won't change my surname, I'll be your grandson for life."

Upon hearing this, Old Master Meng felt both joy and sorrow.

He pointed at Meng Jiusi, his finger trembling slightly, "Silly boy, silly boy!"

Meng Jiusi didn't think she was stupid. "You raised me when I was young, so it's only right that I take care of you in your old age. Besides, the Lin family has so many children, they don't need me."

"Nonsense!" Old Master Meng's eyes reddened, and he turned away, ignoring the silly boy.

In the words of those who ousted him, he saved too many people who shouldn't have been saved; he was a cancer on the nation.

His children and grandchildren published notices in the newspapers severing ties with him.

Jiu Si didn't have to end up like this. After all, he wasn't a real member of the Meng family. He could have lived a peaceful life as long as he published an article in the newspaper. But this kid is stupid and stubborn. He just wouldn't have it. He lost a leg and his wife and children. He insisted on suffering with him. He's really stupid!

He'd never seen anyone so stupid!
He's a fool in the capital, and after finally finding his relatives here, this silly boy insists on not changing his surname. How can he not change his surname?!
He didn't know that people in the countryside care a lot about this; if you don't change your surname, how can they accept you from the bottom of their hearts?

Jiu Si has cut off his own path.

Meng Jiusi knew his grandfather was angry, but he had his own principles.

“My father said he wouldn’t force me to change my surname, and I could tell he was serious.” He said earnestly, “Grandpa, my family is different. They are open and honest, and they say what they mean. They are not hypocritical people, and I can tell that.”

"Bullshit." Old Master Meng turned around, the usually calm and refined old man unusually swearing. "You can tell? You've only met him once, what can you possibly tell?"

"You can't see into someone's heart." His voice was full of complex emotions.

He wouldn't have ended up like this if he hadn't been betrayed by his own family.

Meng Jiusi didn't explain much, "Grandpa will know when he sees my sister. She's coming to bring me something tomorrow."

Grandpa Meng said no more.

He said all this because he was afraid of disappointing or hurting his grandson.

"I hope so."

Meng Jiusi picked up a peach shortbread and gave it to him, saying, "Grandpa, you can have the peach shortbread. These are all for you. I'm full."

I know, you ate dumplings.

Grandpa Meng always felt that his grandson was showing off, but after looking at him several times, he couldn't see it.

……

The Lin family walked slowly towards the village.

Lin Shisheng was walking when he felt his younger sister trailing behind him. He turned around and looked back—

Zhao Zhao was saying something while holding Cheng Huai's arm. Then her brother-in-law ruffled her long hair and squatted down. Her sister smiled brightly, jumped onto his back, wrapped her arms around his neck, stretched her head out, and smiled as if she wanted to kiss him.

Lin Shisheng quickly turned around, his face contorted with a sour expression.

"What kind of expression is that?" Lin Shichang also turned around, just in time to see something he shouldn't have, and quickly looked away, clearing his throat to cover up his embarrassment.

Lin Shisheng couldn't stop laughing.

Behind.

Gu Chenghuai dodged his wife's attack by turning his head, and coaxed her in a low voice, "There are people in front of us, let's go back inside and make a fuss."

Lin Zhao stopped making a fuss and rested her head on the man's shoulder, looking at his face with a smile in her eyes and brows. "Gu Chenghuai, the moon is so bright and round tonight."

The man looked up; it was almost Mid-Autumn Festival, and the high-hanging moon was indeed bright and round.

"Your birthday is coming soon, how do you want to celebrate it?" Thinking about how he didn't have time to celebrate Zhao Zhao's birthday with her in the past two years, Gu Chenghuai felt guilty and remorseful. "I'm here this year, I can be with you. You can make any request you have, and I'll fulfill it as long as I can do it."

Lin Zhao then remembered that her birthday was coming up soon. "With you here, our family is reunited, and that's the best thing for me."

Gu Chenghuai felt as if a cluster of pink roses had bloomed in his heart, causing a corner of his heart to collapse. His voice softened several degrees. "Don't you have any other wishes? I'll take you to the city to play, eat delicious food, and buy you some pretty clothes. It's getting cold, so you should add some clothes."

Go to the bookstore and browse around, then buy a few books that interest you.

When I got back, I found out there's a zoo in the city, I'll take you there. I think there's also a theater, we can go see that too. One day isn't enough, just bring the letter of introduction, stay at the guesthouse for one night, and come back the next day…”

Gu Chenghuai spoke for a while without receiving a response. He turned his head to look, and his thin lips touched something soft. He was stunned for a moment, and looked at the people not far in front of him with a little guilt. He was relieved when he found that no one had noticed them.

"Pfft..." Lin Zhao's eyes crinkled into a smile. "Don't be afraid, Mom and Dad aren't paying attention to us."

Gu Chenghuai's deep eyes held a mixture of helplessness and indulgence. "You did this on purpose?"

"Yes," Lin Zhao replied confidently.

Gu Chenghuai smiled indulgently and bounced the person on his back up a bit. "What do you think of my suggestion? Will the leader approve it?"

Lin Zhao beamed, "Approved."

"Okay, you take a day off then, and I'll go to the captain to get a letter of introduction." Gu Chenghuai made the arrangements immediately.

Taking leave is no problem, at worst a day's pay will be deducted. Lin Zhao asked, "Are you taking care of the baby?"

"Do you want to bring them?" Gu Chenghuai felt it didn't matter whether he brought them or not, since he could take care of all four kids.

Lin Zhao thought for a moment, "Let's bring them. It's a rare trip, so let's take them with us and broaden their horizons."

If we don't bring them, Yu Bao and Heng Bao will definitely be disappointed.

“Then take it with you,” Gu Chenghuai said.

"It'll also help strengthen the bond between you and your children, so that when you go back to the army, your four little ones won't have a strong impression of you," Lin Zhao said with a smile.

Gu Chenghuai was silent for a moment, then said, "Thank you."

"You're welcome!" Lin Zhao patted his shoulder gently, looking pleased.

Thinking of her fourth brother, she said in a light tone, "My fourth brother is really great. He's a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. He can heal his own foot with silver needles. His medical skills must be very high."

Fourth Brother is a good person, very peaceful, and he doesn't hold any resentment towards us. He accepts us in his heart, which is wonderful. Mom and Dad are very happy and gratified; I can tell.

Gu Chenghuai walked steadily, smiling and nodding, "Give him some time, and he'll call me 'father' and 'mother'."

"No rush," Lin Zhao said earnestly. "As long as we know Fourth Brother's whereabouts and can help him, that's good enough. That's what our whole family thinks."

She muttered, "It's much better than before when I had no idea where he was."

"I never expected my fourth brother to come back. He suddenly appeared without my knowledge."

"Thanks to my sons, if it weren't for their amazing observation skills, I wouldn't have realized it was Fourth Brother so early. I think the two boys deserve a reward, what do you think?"

Gu Chenghuai had no objection, but he said aloud, "Aren't you spoiling them too much?"

Lin Zhao was slightly taken aback, straightened her upper body, and stared at him: "What? You can't spoil him?"

"I didn't say we can't spoil them, I just mean we shouldn't spoil them too much." Gu Chenghuai wasn't a father who couldn't stand seeing his children do well, but he felt that his wife was spoiling the twins a bit too much. The two boys were five years old and already had a better life than other children in the village. With Zhaozhao spoiling them so much, he was afraid that the two boys would go astray.

"No way!" Lin Zhao poked his face angrily. "The twins are so sensible. You only see how much I spoil them, but you don't see how easy they are to take care of."

Gu Chenghuai was about to speak again when they heard Dahuang's bark from afar. Immediately afterward, a child who looked exactly like them ran towards them.

"Mother!" A clear voice called out before she even arrived.

Seeing their mother being carried on their father's back, they assumed their mother's foot was injured, and worry appeared on their identical faces.

She ran quickly to Gu Chenghuai.

"Mom, did you hurt your foot?" Yu Bao looked up at Lin Zhao, her little brows furrowed.

Hengbao's little voice was filled with anxiety, "Mom, I'll go get the doctor!"

He was about to rush forward as soon as he finished speaking.

Lin Zhao quickly replied, "I'm fine."

Hengbao stopped, turned around, and asked with a hint of disbelief, "Really?"

“It’s true.” Lin Zhao swung her legs. “Mom got tired of walking, so your dad carried her.”

Yu Bao looked at Gu Chenghuai, "Really, Dad?"

Gu Chenghuai nodded, "Yeah."

Yu Bao was relieved and said in his little voice, "Daddy, carry me steadily, don't let Mommy fall."

Gu Chenghuai: "..."

Before he could speak, Hengbao gave Lin Zhao an adorable smile and said, "Mommy, when I grow up, I'll buy you a four-wheeled car so you won't have to walk anywhere and won't get tired."

Lin Zhao gave Gu Chenghuai a look, as if to say, "Look, can you spoil this kid?"

She looked at her son gently, "What if I can't drive?"

Hengbao, quick-witted, immediately came up with a solution: "What's so difficult about that? I'll hire a driver for you."

After thinking for a moment, he added, "Let's hire another aunt who can cook and do laundry, so that Mom won't have to do anything."

Gu Chenghuai looked at his son, whose heart and eyes were filled with love for his mother, and pursed his lips.

These two kids are obsessed with Zhao Zhao, they shouldn't be spoiled, right?

“Wife, you’re right,” he said.

Yu Bao shifted his gaze from his mother to his father, his dark, bright eyes filled with surprise. "What did Dad say that's right?"

"It's nothing," Gu Chenghuai denied.

Yu Bao is unhappy.

Lin Zhao laughed and changed the subject, "Why did you two come out? It's already dark, aren't you afraid?"

Yu Bao was full of energy. "Don't worry, my brother and I are with Da Huang."

“That’s right.” Hengbao chimed in, taking her mother’s hand and speaking in a light tone, “Dahuang is very powerful. It can even beat adults. It will protect us, so we’re not afraid.”

"Isn't that right, Big Yellow?"

He used his other hand to rub Big Yellow's head.

Big Yellow: Woof—

"Look, Big Yellow said it will protect us!" Hengbao smiled happily, her eyes crinkling.

Lin Zhao patted Gu Chenghuai on the shoulder, signaling him to put himself down.

After landing, she held the two pups on either side of her hand and said, "Dahuang is part of our family, and we must take good care of it and its pups."

"Yes!" The twins nodded solemnly.

As they were talking, the family returned to the Gu family home, and the Lin family members took out their bicycles, ready to go back.

Seeing this, Lin Zhao quickly said, "Father, Mother, wait a moment, I'll go get a flashlight."

As soon as she finished speaking, she rushed into the house, went back inside, and grabbed a flashlight.

Lin Heling took it, her voice gentle, "We're leaving now. If you need anything, have someone pass on a message to us. Go back quickly and let Yu Bao and Heng Bao get some sleep."

"Okay," Lin Zhao replied obediently.

The family of four, along with their dog, watched the Lin family leave before turning back into the house.

Yu Bao suddenly remembered something and asked curiously, "Mom, what did you go up the mountain for?"

Lin Zhao led her son through the gate, not telling the truth, and vaguely said, "Didn't we say that we ate too much and went out to digest?"

Yu Bao and his younger brother exchanged a glance, and the two boys chuckled.

“Mom, we’re not stupid!” Yu Bao pinched the bridge of his nose like a little adult, looked at his mother, and said, “Even little kids wouldn’t believe the reasons you make up.”

Hengbao also said, "Yes, yes, if you want to digest your food, you can do it in your own yard. Why do you need to go up the mountain? And you won't let us come with you? You adults have a secret. My brother and I guessed it a long time ago."

Lin Zhao pinched the child's soft little face and said with a smile, "Then guess what the secret is?"

Hengbao and his brother had already guessed it, but they didn't expect it. He cupped his little face and squeezed his chubby cheeks together, as if he was making a funny face.

"Mom, tell me." He pleaded softly.

Lin Zhao shook her head, "Not now, I'll let you know when I have the chance."

Hearing the noise in the yard, Gu's mother slipped on her cloth shoes and came out, calling softly to the twins, "Yu Bao, Heng Bao, aren't you two asleep yet?"

The two boys won't sleep at all until their mother comes back; they're so clingy.

“I’m here,” Yu Bao replied.

She pulled her younger brother toward the main house.

Hengbao remembered that her mother was off work tomorrow, and turned to ask, "Mother, are you taking us to Uncle's house tomorrow?"

"Yes, go to sleep early. I'll take you there after breakfast tomorrow morning." Lin Zhao's voice was tinged with laughter.

The twins, looking forward to it, responded and obediently went back to their room to sleep.

……

The next day.

Lin Zhao woke up naturally and felt a soft little thing next to her. She opened her eyes and saw the adorable Yao Bao.

"Yaobao? What are you doing here?" She hugged the little dumpling and kissed the baby's face.

Yao Bao smiled, revealing her tiny teeth, her sweetness overflowing. "Wait for Mommy," she said in her childish voice, nuzzling her little head against her mother's face.

Lin Zhao picked up her daughter and saw Qianbao sitting cross-legged at the foot of the bed flipping through a dictionary. The way he was so focused would make even an adult feel ashamed.

"Qianbao," she called softly.

The little one didn't hear the first call, but he raised his head when called a second time.

Qianbao calmly put down the dictionary, moved her short, white legs (which had two small red welts from mosquito bites) over, and softly called out, "Mommy~"

Lin Zhao frowned when he saw the mosquito bite. "How did you get bitten by mosquitoes?"

Has the mosquito repellent sachet stopped working?

Yao Bao said angrily, "The mosquitoes are naughty."

“Yes, the mosquitoes are naughty. Yaobao, move over a bit. Mom will get some ointment to put on your brother,” Lin Zhao said softly.

Yao Bao rolled over, grabbed the thin blanket, and fell onto the bed. She was so small that most of her body was covered by the blanket. She frantically tried to pull the blanket out, but couldn't get her body out. She anxiously called for her brother.

"Brother, blanket, blanket..."

Qianbao calmly moved over, pulled the blanket over his younger sister, and quickly pulled it open.

In no time, Yao Bao's little face was flushed from all the fuss. She wiped her forehead and said, "Oh dear, I'm so tired."

Lin Zhao couldn't help laughing.

After applying the medicine to Qianbao, I checked Yaobao's body and found a small red bump on her foot. It seems the mosquito repellent sachet really didn't work.
