Chapter 119 "Little Leaf"

A military unit located thousands of miles away.

Commander Ning opened his eyes and saw his guard dozing off on a stool. Without disturbing him, he sat up and poured himself some water.

The guard couldn't sleep soundly; he would wake up at the slightest movement of his superior and rush to help.

"Why didn't you wake me up when the commander woke up?"

Commander Ning's dignified face showed helplessness. He didn't argue with the guard, took a sip of water, and asked, "What's wrong with me?"

The guard scratched his head. "This afternoon you suddenly clutched your chest, muttering something about Mao, and then you fainted. The doctor examined you but couldn't find anything wrong. He guessed it was related to your memory recovery and said you'd be fine after a couple of days of rest."

Commander Ning leaned back and nodded slightly.

Outside the window are old trees that seem to have been filtered through a lens, and the afterglow of the setting sun shines obliquely on the window, casting dappled light and shadow.

"What did Sun Guoshou say?"

Knowing that his superior was anxious, the guard said, "Master Sun said that after three more acupuncture sessions, the blood stasis in your brain will dissipate, and once the blood stasis is gone, you will have a chance to regain your memory."

"Can the next acupuncture session be arranged as soon as possible?" Commander Ning was anxious. He had a vague feeling that someone very important was waiting for him to come home. This afternoon, he had experienced angina and his head was throbbing, as if some images were eagerly trying to surface. He was afraid that by the time he remembered them, it would be too late.

"No way," the guard refused outright. "Master Sun said that head injuries can't be rushed; they have to be treated gradually. Your bruises have been there for years, so you need to be even more careful."

"We can't afford to be slow. Where is that guy? Bring him here." Commander Ning's voice was slightly stern.

The commander was furious, and the guards couldn't handle it. They didn't dare to look at him and just held on.

"You can call for help, but you can't be willful!" the honest guard said. "Nothing is more important than your health!"

"Don't be so long-winded."

The guard dared not say another word and hurriedly went to call Sun Guoshou.

Sun Guoshou is a master of traditional Chinese medicine and is skilled in acupuncture. He almost got into trouble last month, but Commander Ning protected him and brought him to the army.

Sun Guoshou considered Commander Ning's life-saving benefactor and was particularly concerned about his health. He was unwilling to do anything that might harm his health and adopted the safest and most conservative treatment methods.

Upon arriving at the ward and hearing his superior's words, he immediately refused: "No, you need to rest and recuperate!"

The old doctor's brows were so furrowed they could trap a fly.

No doctor likes a disobedient patient; if the patient wasn't his benefactor, he would have scolded him a few times.

Commander Ning couldn't wait any longer. "Stop talking nonsense and arrange it as soon as possible!"

Old Man Sun wasn't afraid of him. He stubbornly insisted, "It won't be fast!"

Commander Ning glared, his decisive and ruthless aura making everyone's heart pound.

But Sun Guoshou, who was standing in front of him, had seen all sorts of high-ranking people and was not afraid at all.

"Don't glare at me. As long as I'm still your attending physician, you have to listen to me."

Commander Ning gently pinched the bridge of his nose to relieve the headache. He sighed softly, "I've been away from home for many years. I don't know who's still there. I'm afraid I won't make it in time..."

The leader, who always stood tall and proud in public, rarely showed such vulnerability, leaving Sun Guoshou stunned.

Recalling what I knew about Commander Ning, who had been deep within enemy territory for many years, he forgot everything but his duty and mission, and successfully completed the task.

Sun Guoshou felt a surge of admiration and, not wanting to disappoint him, couldn't help but think of a solution.

"...I'll think of another way."

Commander Ning's expression relaxed, and he said solemnly, "Thank you for your help, please do it as soon as possible!"

Sun Guoshou glanced at him, feeling as if he had been tricked.

Looking closely at his expression, I couldn't discern anything.

It must be an illusion, right?

Whether it matters or not, the words have already been spoken.

"I'll go and look into it."

After saying this, Sun Guoshou left the ward.

Commander Ning was temporarily relieved. He was determined to remember as soon as possible and bring his family to join him in the army. The situation outside was becoming increasingly chaotic, and he was worried about them.

Thinking it over, the tall and imposing middle-aged man got off the hospital bed.

"Sir, are you alright? Should we observe you some more?" the guard asked worriedly.

He couldn't rest easy just thinking about his boss suddenly collapsing that afternoon.

"If you have anything to observe, go back to your office." Commander Ning took his military transfer jacket from the wooden coat rack and strode out.

The guards had no choice but to hurry up and keep their eyes fixed on their leader, as the head of the guards could not handle the capricious leader.

……

After showing off their new names in the village, the two children, now Yu Bao and Heng Bao, decided to play in their own yard as it got dark.

Lin Zhao was exhausted today. She had just finished taking a shower and was lying on the mat with her eyes closed, resting.

Her long eyelashes fluttered gently, revealing that she was not asleep.

"Shall I give you a massage?" Gu Chenghuai sat down on the edge of the bed, his deep voice tinged with laughter.

Lin Zhao suddenly opened her eyes, then rolled over and lay face down on the bed. "My shoulders, waist, and legs hurt too."

A pair of hands with distinct knuckles landed on her shoulders, gently kneading them. "How could it not hurt after riding such a long distance?"

"Is it heavy?" Gu Chenghuai asked gently.

"Just right." Lin Zhao's face was buried in the pillow, her clear voice muffled and not very loud.

“My aunt is waiting. My older brothers have been impatient for a long time since they went back. I absolutely have to go this time. You have no idea how happy my aunt is.” This was her reply to the man.

"I know, I didn't mean to blame you, I just felt sorry for you working so hard." Gu Chenghuai pressed down from your shoulder to your waist. "Do you want some medicated oil?"

"No!" Lin Zhao refused outright. She had just taken a shower and didn't like sleeping feeling sticky.

"Big Brother, no, where are Yu Bao and Heng Bao? It's strange to suddenly change how we address them."

Gu Chenghuai laughed and said, "They'll get used to it after a week. They're out playing with Xingci and the others."

Upon hearing the name, Lin Zhao couldn't help but laugh. "Lai Mei must be overjoyed. He's wanted to change his name for a long time, and he finally did."

After giving birth to her eldest son, Xingye, my second sister-in-law really wanted a daughter. But the second child she gave birth to was also a boy. I heard that when my second sister-in-law learned from the midwife that it was another boy, she couldn't help but cry and named the crying baby Laimei on the spot.

"Hey, I haven't had a chance to ask yet, why does Second Sister-in-law like girls so much?"

Gu Chenghuai knew a little about it: "Second sister-in-law's family is not good. She has been mistreated since she was a child, so she wants a daughter."

“I understand. She wants to prove that her daughter is just as precious, and she wants to give her daughter everything that she couldn’t have in the past, is that right?” Lin Zhao turned her head and looked at him.

Her hair was thick, black, and shiny, but it was messy and blocked her eyes.

"Yes." Gu Chenghuai reached out to smooth his wife's long hair and loosened it with a rubber band.

Lin Zhao shuffled toward the bed like a little worm, grabbed his hand, and rested her head on his strong thighs.

"Why do you act so much like a child?" Gu Chenghuai chuckled, touching her chin with his calloused fingers, his deep black eyes filled with an unbelievable tenderness.

Lin Zhao snorted but didn't say anything.

He clearly likes her being close, so why is he pretending?

"Are you still feeling unwell?" Gu Chenghuai asked.

"I feel much better," Lin Zhao said, her eyes sparkling. The couple were cuddling when the door was pushed open, and the four children from the third branch of the family entered one after the other.

Lin Zhao didn't move, and Gu Chenghuai was even less likely to move his wife's head away; they were a legally married couple. He ignored the children and instead reached out to massage his wife's head.

"Are you done playing?" Lin Zhao looked at the four children.

Yu Bao glanced at his parents, his eyes filled with worry: "Mom, do you have a headache?"

"A little." Lin Zhao didn't deny it; it was hot.

Looking at her eldest son, she felt even more worried. Even Qianbao and Yaobao came over to massage her legs, and her heart softened. She touched the twins' little faces.

"A good night's sleep will make you feel better tomorrow morning."

Yu Bao was relieved. "Then Mom will go to bed early tonight. I will take care of my younger brother and sister."

"Okay." Lin Zhao said affectionately, "Thank you, Yu Bao."

The child was overjoyed to hear the new title.

"Mom, would you like some water?" Hengbao brought over some water.

With her son practically offered to her, Lin Zhao couldn't refuse him. She got up, took a sip, and smiled, "The water Hengbao brought is so sweet."

Hengbao grinned, then remembered the important matter at hand. He leaned closer, tilting his head slightly, and asked, "Mommy, what does the area behind my ear look like?"

Lin Zhao looked up and saw a dark blob behind the child's ear, which looked like it had been drawn with ink and was not recognizable in shape.

"I can't tell." She shook her head.

"It's filthy. Was it drawn with a fountain pen? Didn't I tell you that you can't just play with fountain pens?" Lin Zhao frowned, found a clean handkerchief, dampened it with water, and wiped his ears.

Yu Bao's eyes flashed with guilt.

It was his idea to draw something behind the ears.

The child looked at his finger and quietly admitted his mistake: "Mom, it was me. I drew it for my little brother."

Hoshino wanted to borrow his mother's fountain pen. He took the pen to the yard and waited until he finished using it. He wrote with the pen, and the ink got on his hand, spreading into a small cloud. He remembered that the strange uncle at the foot of the mountain had a small leaf behind his ear, so he drew a small leaf on his younger brother's ear.

"Huh?" Lin Zhao's mouth gaped slightly. "Why?"

She didn't blame the boy; she was just genuinely curious. "Why did you draw...something behind your little brother's ear?"

There is a reason for everything a child does.

Seeing that his mother wasn't angry, Yu Bao smiled and hugged Lin Zhao's waist, "I saw an uncle in a thatched hut at the foot of the mountain with little leaves behind his ears, playing with my little brother."

Hengbao also hugged her brother and testified, "Mom, my brother told me, and I agreed. My brother and I were just joking, don't be angry. We will never play with pens again."

When their older brothers came over to hug them, the twins rushed over and were surrounded by the four children.

Gu Chenghuai smiled helplessly.

He had never seen such a clingy child in the army; those kids were very wild and adults couldn't find them before mealtimes.

Lin Zhao was stunned when he heard Yu Bao's words. His thoughts seemed to freeze, and his mind went blank.

After a long while, she came to her senses, cupped Yu Bao's face in her hands, and her urgent voice almost trembled.

"Yu Bao, did you really see someone with little leaves behind their ears?"

Yu Bao said firmly, "Yes, I saw it. That uncle who was limping had small leaves behind his ears."

Lin Zhao naturally believed him, but she still felt dazed.

Could it be the fourth brother?
"Mom, what's wrong?" Yu Bao touched her face, her little brows furrowed, her eyes filled with worry.

"It's nothing, I just thought about something," Lin Zhao mumbled.

She wouldn't talk about things she wasn't sure about. Besides, the group of people at the foot of the mountain were dangerous, and she was afraid her children might accidentally tell someone and cause trouble for the family.

"It's getting late, go to sleep. Wash the ink off your ears before you go to sleep." Lin Zhao patted the children's heads, her voice gentle.

"Okay." Yu Bao didn't argue any further. He took Qian Bao and Yao Bao's hands, called Heng Bao, and the three little ones left the house.

Before leaving, Hengbao stopped and turned around. "Mom, you said you'd give us presents tomorrow, don't forget!"

Lin Zhao waved her hand at him, "I remember, I won't forget."

Hengbao chuckled and closed the door behind him.

After the children left, only the young couple remained in the house.

Gu Chenghuai asked directly, "What's wrong with the person with the birthmark behind their ear?"

"I suspect that person might be my fourth brother," Lin Zhao said, suppressing his excitement.

The man's mind was a little slow to process what was happening.

"Fourth brother?"

Zhao Zhao doesn't only have three older brothers, so where did the fourth brother come from?
The Lin family rarely mentions their fourth child being stolen, and Lin Zhao has never told her husband about it, so it's normal that Gu Chenghuai doesn't know.

“My fourth brother and my third brother are twins. They were stolen shortly after they were born,” Lin Zhao explained slowly. “My mother said he has a small leaf-shaped birthmark behind his ear.”

Gu Chenghuai raised an eyebrow. "What a coincidence. I'll check it out tomorrow."

"What do you think about me asking directly?" Lin Zhao couldn't contain his excitement.

Her parents didn't mention her fourth brother very often, but she knew they cared about him. When her father made clothes for her and her siblings, he would always make an extra set. Her mother did the same, always preparing four sets of things.

"It's not impossible." Gu Chenghuai thought his wife's method was also acceptable, as it was faster than conducting an investigation.

"I need to tell my older brother about this," Lin Zhao said.

Her brother is steady, reliable, and meticulous; entrusting things to him is definitely the right thing to do.

"Don't rush to investigate. Let my older brother ask first. If I need any help, I'll definitely come to you."

Gu Chenghuai had no objection, "Okay."

That night, Lin Zhao tossed and turned, unable to sleep well. She had a series of dreams, sometimes dreaming that she had found her fourth brother, and other times dreaming that her family had never found him in their entire lives.

When I woke up the next day, there was a dark patch under my eyes.

Gu Chenghuai: "..."

Lin Zhao noticed his gaze, realized something, patted his hard, honey-colored chest, and said angrily, "Disgusted?"

"I won't mind how you are." Gu Chenghuai said, and then kissed her.

Lin Zhao smiled broadly, wanting to stay in bed a little longer, and then collapsed onto the bed.

The man ruffled her hair, then got out of bed. His strong chest and abdominal muscles, and his long, straight, and powerful legs gave her a great sense of security.

Gu Chenghuai opened the wardrobe, found the new undershirt his wife had made for him, and put it on.

"Sleep a little longer. When you wake up, I'll fetch some well water, wet a towel, and give your eyes a cold compress."

Lin Zhao smiled and said, "Okay."

Gu Chenghuai left the house and went to the main house to call the twins.

Yu Bao and Heng Bao were trained to be very self-disciplined. They would wake up on time, get dressed obediently, and quietly go out to exercise with their father.

When Lin Zhao got up, her husband had already returned with the children.

Gu Chenghuai drew water from the well. The water was icy cold, and the towel he used to wet it was also icy. Lin Zhao slowly applied the water to her eyes.

"Yubao, go to the new house and call your uncle. Tell him that I need to see him."
