I built a manor in the Middle Ages

Chapter 245 The New Baron

Chapter 245 The New Baron

The news of Luke's son's birth spread throughout the entire baronial territory in a short period of time.

Luc, who was originally unknown, had become a well-known name throughout the entire baronial estate after the winter.

As the mountain winds swept northward, inside Fort Cooper, Berry, like a dimly lit castle, was shrouded in darkness, his face somber.

“My lord, why do you worry? Even if Luc has an heir, it doesn’t mean he can truly stand firm in southern Burgundy.”

At the bottom of the steps, the elderly man, who had been a housekeeper for nearly thirty years, lowered his voice and whispered:

"Sir, have you forgotten Baldwin? He was Simon's closest knight back then, and look what happened to him now."

The butler's face was thin, and the two nasolabial folds seemed etched into his skin. This weathered old man's eyelids drooped.

"As long as the young master brings back the Duke's edict and keeps Kahn in check, Luc will eventually follow in his father-in-law's footsteps."

The butler's voice gradually faded away, and after a long while, Berry glanced at him indifferently.
"Don't mention Simon again."

"Yes"

"But you're right, even a lion needs to lie low before it goes hunting."

"Let Luke be happy for two more days."

"Your Excellency is wise," the butler said with a smile and a bow.

"hiss…"

The butler slowly stood up, then suddenly saw Berry click his tongue. Then, to his astonishment, Berry was about to fall off his seat. The butler quickly stepped forward to support Berry.

"Sir, what's wrong?!"

"Damn it, I've been feeling dizzy for the past few days, I don't know why. Go and call the cultivator over."

Berry clutched his throbbing temples, leaning his head back in the chair with a pained expression. Seeing the panicked butler go to call the monk, he waved his hand, signaling the guard beside him to pour him a glass of water.

With his eyes closed, Berry took the water glass and drank it all in one gulp, his brow furrowed.

"Honey water again?"

"Yes, Father, I noticed you weren't feeling well, so I had the kitchen prepare a cup of honey water for you."

"Fan?"

Berry opened his eyes, looked at the respectfully bowing Finn, and smiled with satisfaction. This second son was quite filial.

After drinking the honey that wasn't quite sweet, the butler soon arrived with the monk.

After hearing about Berry's symptoms, the monk stroked his hairy chin and pondered for a moment before saying:

"Your Excellency, the body is being afflicted by a demon. It is very easy to cure. Just let your blood flow out a few times, allowing the corrupted soul to be expelled with your blood. You will then be blessed by God again."

"Then let's get started."

Berry nodded and followed the other person to a bed. Under the watchful eyes of the butler Finn and others, the monk used a knife to cut open Berry's temple. Immediately, drops of blood splattered on the gray ground, instantly blooming into red spots.

Looking at the blood flowing out continuously, the cultivator grinned.

Despite the pain, Berry instructed the steward to give the monk some rewards and waited quietly for the dizziness to subside. However, as the bleeding increased, he felt even more dizzy.

“Your Excellency, if bloodletting doesn’t work, it means the situation is more serious. But don’t worry, I have other methods.”

Seemingly realizing that the symptoms had not lessened, the monk drew a holy cross and prepared to have the steward prepare some salt and wood ash.

Just then, the castle gate was suddenly pushed open, and an inner court knight rushed in in a panic.

"What the hell are you doing, Kent Knight? Can't you see the Baron is receiving treatment?"

"God, please forgive my rudeness."

Kent saw where the group was, ignored the butler's reprimand, took a deep breath, looked at Berry's bed, and knelt down on one knee with a thud.

"Sir, something has happened."

"What is it?" Berry stared intently at Kent's ashen face, a strange unease creeping into his heart. Ignoring his dizziness and blood rushing to his head, he quickly stood up, blood trickling down his cheeks and jawline.

Kent lowered his head, only daring to look at Berry's toes, and said in a weak voice:
"Sir, young Master Joseph has been murdered."

"We followed Huss and found the young master's body, along with Furman and the other entourage; their weapons and equipment had been taken."

"The young master's body is right outside."

"Damn it, what did you say?!"

Kent's voice wasn't loud, but it seemed to pierce the entire castle like thunder. The old butler was dumbfounded, his face full of disbelief. The monk's mouth also gaped open. A glint flashed in Finn's eyes, and then a few tears welled up in his eyes as he cried loudly.

Berry looked even more sorrowful, feeling even more dizzy. His head slumped, his legs went weak, and he fell backward.

"Father/Master!"

Everyone rushed forward to help Berry up. The once-powerful lord now looked ten years older. He closed his eyes in pain, his mind flashing with the names of countless murderers.

Finally, he opened his eyes, which had become bloodshot and swollen in just a few seconds, and almost squeezed out a sentence through clenched teeth:

"Joseph Jr. is dead, Furman is dead, so why is Huss still alive! Drag him away, pry the murderer out of his mouth, and then turn him into a Blood Hawk!"

"grown ups."

Knowing Huss's character well, Kent suddenly looked up, wanting to plead for mercy, but seeing Berry's fierce, wolf-like eyes, he gritted his teeth, turned around, and left.

Kent left the castle, and it was only then that Berry finally succumbed to grief and dizziness and fainted completely.

"Don't panic! Bring me the salt and wood ash, I have a plan!"

The monk quelled the panic in the crowd. Amidst the steward's frantic efforts, the monk, now the leader, mixed salt, wood ash, and water, then called out loudly:
"Quickly take off the Baron's pants, I need to give him a sacred enema!"

……

After being given oral medication several times and having blood drained several times, Berry gradually regained consciousness.

A nearly exhausted Berry, amidst a blessing to God, dismissed everyone except Finn and the old butler.

Calling Finn to the bedside, Berry, though weak, still had a sharp gaze as he looked over Finn's lowered head.

Looking at the obedient and humble Finn, Berry suddenly said coldly:
"Did you kill Joseph?"

"How could that be, Father? How could I possibly kill little Joseph!"

Raising his hand to stop Finn's shouting, Berry pressed his forehead, where veins were bulging. "Joseph's return route is a secret. The entire duchy is so big. If someone hadn't tipped him off, how could there be an army that just happened to be able to kill Joseph and just happened to be lying in ambush by the roadside?"

"Child, you can fool me, but you can't fool God."

Berry's words left the butler speechless, and Finn froze on the spot, cold sweat pouring down his face.

"Father, it really isn't true."

"Alright, whether it's you or not is no longer important."

Berry stared at the ceiling, his expression of dejection—a stark contrast to his previous defeat by Luc—and said in a low, melancholic tone:
"Regardless of whether it's you or not, you are now the only heir of the Joseph family. I will not punish you; from now on, I will groom you to be the successor."

Upon hearing this, Finn immediately stopped crying. He looked at Berry in surprise and saw that what the other person said seemed to be true. Despite his best efforts to suppress it, he still couldn't hide the slight upturn of his lips.

Berry suddenly turned his head, and when he noticed his father staring at him, Finn quickly lowered his head and resumed his humble demeanor.

Staring intently at the tip of Finn's nose, Berry spoke with an unprecedentedly solemn tone:
"Fan, if it were you, I'd advise you: whoever is behind you, you'd better tell me and stay away from them!"

"While I'm still here, wipe out this jackal for the family. Once you inherit the baronial title, believe me, you're no match for him, because he'll only be more cunning, treacherous, and ruthless than you."

"Tell me, is it Luke?!"

"But Father, it really wasn't me who killed little Joseph."

Berry looked at Finn, and Finn looked at Berry. Finally, Berry lay back down on the bed and sighed deeply.
