I built a manor in the Middle Ages

Chapter 19 Fierce Battle

Chapter 19 Fierce Battle
The most ferocious wolf, second only to the leader, grabbed Luc's head with all four limbs and opened its mouth to bite down.

The evil wolf likes to bite the neck of its prey the most. Knowing this, Luc didn't care about the other wild wolves around him who were rushing forward. He quickly turned his head and heard a series of violent friction sounds. The evil wolf above his head bit Luc's helmet, and the iron helmet broke, causing the wolf's teeth to hurt.

The mucus flowing from the yellow wolf teeth lay on Luc's face, which was extremely disgusting.
The sudden leap of the wolf onto his head almost made Luc's heart leap out of his chest. However, as the fishy and unpleasant smell lingered in his nostrils, a surge of courage surged in his heart. Luc threw down his shield, grabbed the wolf's tail with his left hand, and roared, "Get down here!"

The chain mail could not provide the wolf with claw strength, so Luc pulled hard and actually pulled the wolf off alive!
The tail is connected to the canine spine, and the extreme pain makes the wolf's limbs tremble and howl.

Luke took advantage of the situation and stepped hard on the wolf's neck. There was a sound of a broken bone.
Luc didn't even look at it. When Luc was entangled by the wild wolves, the leader wolf had already led the pack to his legs. Almost at the same time, four wild wolves bit Luc's legs, waist and chest together.

Luc ignored the last two, threw away his shield, and simply held the sword with both hands, stabbing it hard into the air above the wolf that was attacking his right leg!
The sharp sword pierced the wolf's skin, fat, and bones, nailing the ferocious wolf directly to the ground. Blood gushed out and it died on the spot!
"Damn it!"

While killing the wild wolf, Luc cried out in pain. His left leg had been bitten by another wolf, and its teeth tore through his breeches and embedded themselves in Luc's flesh!

Enduring the severe pain, Luc drew out the knife from his waist and stabbed it straight into the gray wolf's eyes. The dagger pierced its eyeball. Luc's muscles hidden under the chain mail bulged, and the powerful force instantly made the knife penetrate firmly. The tip of the knife extended along the eye to the brain. The wolf on the left leg loosened its teeth, let out a creepy wail, and rolled on the ground.

The other two wolves bit into the chain mail and returned in vain.

After a standoff that lasted for half the night, a real conflict finally broke out between the two sides. In just a moment, three wolves died and Luc's left leg was seriously injured.

The dark clouds moved away again, and the moonlight climbed up the treetops again. Luc drew his cross sword and watched the wolves gradually retreat.

Animals are very practical. They lost three adult wolves but still failed to capture Luc. Without any orders from the leader wolf, the remaining wolves had already retreated spontaneously, and the low-level wolves even began to flee.

The leader wolf looked back at Luke with a little reluctance and fear, and finally turned around and left helplessly.

The severe pain in his left leg was unbearable for Luc. It was not only the pain from the wound, but also the damage from the dirty saliva and bacteria. However, Luc could not show any sign of fatigue. He did not squat down until the wolves completely disappeared. He rolled up his trouser legs and looked at his bloody calf.
Rows of teeth marks were left on his calf, and the uneven flesh holes were bleeding continuously. Fortunately, Luke's quick counterattack prevented the flesh from being torn off.

Luc turned around and opened the wooden door. Little Charlie, smelling the blood, rushed over and circled around Luc.

Seeing Luc's wound, little Charlie was obviously stunned, then he stuck out his tongue and subconsciously wanted to lick it.

This is one of the ways wild animals heal themselves or their companions.

Being pushed away by Luc, his wound was obviously infected, and being licked would only make it worse.

Luc didn't bother to deal with the "war" and rushed to the river with little Charlie. He needed him to act as a guard for him.

Before leaving, Luc took out some wood ash and salt from the fireplace, went to the river, squeezed the blood out of the wound, and then washed it carefully with salt water. The burning sensation made Luc gasp.

Infection is the most terrifying thing in this era.

After a war, the number of people who die directly is far less than the number of people who die from infection afterwards.

The level of doctors in the entire continent was even worse. The nobles had specialized doctors who were relatively better, but the doctors for ordinary people were usually barbers. These "doctors" would bleed and amputate at will, and then pray to God for protection. As long as you have a pious faith, you will not die. If you die, it only means that you are not pious enough.
This idea is even more terrifying than the infection itself.

After cleaning, Luc found some dandelions, mashed them, mixed them with a small amount of wood ash, and carefully applied them to the wound.

Dandelions are among the most ubiquitous anti-inflammatory plants, but whether or not Luc would catch another fever was a matter of fate. Back at the cabin, the pheasants in the chicken coop clearly hadn't recovered from the terrifying wolf attack. The two pheasants, who had only recently disliked each other, huddled together, their necks tucked in like quails, their wings folded in. It looked truly absurd.

Little Charlie stared at the dead wolf's body and grimaced.

Looking at the three dead wolves, Luc was still furious. After thinking for a while, he erected three sharp stakes two hundred yards in front of the cabin. Then, he hung the bodies of the three wolves on the stakes, imitating the way other nobles of that era used to intimidate bandits and refugees, as a warning to others.

After covering the bloodstains at the door with sand to avoid flies, Luc returned to the house and fell into a deep sleep.

……

Time passed quickly, and for five days Luc was in good health, and only then did he feel relieved.

It took Luc a few more days to build the fence gate, so he was temporarily free from worries.

However, this battle also made Luc start to reflect:
His mistake was that he did not mend the fence until the sheep were lost. He only remembered that the fence gate was not repaired after the wolves attacked, which led to him being caught in a fierce battle. Although he was busy farming and could not get away, if the fence fortification was completely completed, Luc could sit firmly in the wooden house. Even if some wolves managed to get in, he could kill them one by one, and he would not have to be besieged like just now.

The second is my own carelessness.

Luc really didn't expect that the wolf pack had actually sent a "spy" to ambush in his yard in advance, and the spy was lying in ambush without making a sound or even opening his eyes to avoid being discovered. This really surprised Luc and almost caused his death.

No wonder Pheasant and Little Charlie kept shouting before.

The third reason is that Luke's combat power is seriously insufficient.
A strong ironsmith must be strong himself. Apart from anything else, if Luc could shoot an arrow, the result would be different.
Shoot a few wild wolves from a distance, and the enemy will not think of attacking.
"After all, you still have to practice!"

Luc gritted his teeth. The last reason was what Luc was going to do next:
people!
That’s right, it’s people!

There is no doubt that humans are always social animals. Even the most secluded mountain dwellers will trade with outsiders.

Luc had already experienced the hardships of clearing land in the mountains without help. Now that he was attacked, he further realized the truth that a single tree cannot make a forest.

If Luc had helpers when he was attacked, all the worries about the fence gate not being repaired, his own carelessness, and his poor shooting skills would have disappeared into thin air. The fighting power of two people is definitely not comparable to that of one person.

So Luke’s next move is nothing else but to recruit people!

But what kind of people to recruit and how many people to recruit is a question worth studying.

Luke had no intention of recruiting a bunch of refugees, as the refugees he recruited might turn around and break up with him.

The number of people cannot be too many; if possible, one is enough.

Secondly, it cannot be a woman. I am recruiting helpers who can open up the land and defend the wooden house, not marrying a wife. In this regard, men obviously have an advantage over women.

Luc rubbed his thick beard. "Maybe I could buy a slave myself?"
