Chapter 227 Chaotic Battle (Part 4)

The fanatical followers of the Church of Mother Earth are insane. They are not afraid of death or injury. Even if they are stabbed in the neck and blood is spurting out, they will continue to swing their weapons and fight the enemy to the death, even as their necks are leaking air like farts.

Such insane behavior made them invincible against the soldiers of the garrison, who couldn't bring themselves to harm their familiar neighbors, the old man next door, or their childhood friends, while also fearing their inhuman madness.

However, players will fear a large group of weaklings who have no outstanding characteristics other than madness.

The player launched another counter-charge, cutting into their ranks with the ease of a cleaver slicing through tofu, and began to wreak havoc... Heavy armor against unarmored, as long as the player still had stamina, no matter how recklessly they played, they could slaughter them one by one like chickens.

Furthermore, Ye Aonaihe and his group were not isolated and without support. Thanks to the battle between the armed civilians and the garrison soldiers, not only could Ye Aonaihe and the other pioneers safely climb the city wall, but the players behind them could also climb the city wall at their leisure.

Although the people behind had just climbed onto the city wall and did not know what Ye Aonai and the others had gone through, they saw them fighting with a large group of NPCs dressed in civilian clothes, and the latter did not look like kind people.

What should we do next? We need to think about that more.
Of course, we should pick up our weapons, charge forward, and fight alongside our brothers!

When reinforcements arrived from behind, the already disoriented and heavily wounded armed civilians suddenly became like mad dogs with broken spines and knocked out, posing no threat whatsoever except for barking wildly.

The players' heavy armor gleamed coldly in the rain, and their swords and spears tore open bloody gashes on the unarmored bodies of the believers as easily as harvesting ripe ears of wheat.

Soon, the fervor of arming civilians was extinguished like a flame in a heavy rain.

When Connie finally climbed the wooden ladder built by the players to the top of the walls of Voltradnoy, what she saw was a wall piled high with corpses, and thick, sticky blood mixed with rainwater, cascading down the walls like a waterfall.

Connie's boots crunched over the blood-stained bricks, the rain washing her leather armor until it gleamed coldly. Looking down at the unseeing corpses of the civilians, she subconsciously frowned, but relaxed her gaze a second later.

Unlike the carefree players, Connie noticed something was wrong with the corpse at first glance. She knew her subordinates well and had a deep understanding of thugs and gangsters.

First, the agents didn't have the ability to organize so many people. Second, thugs and gangsters are a bunch of cowards who bully the weak and fear the strong; they're unlikely to fight anyone to the death.

If they can win a fight, they'll shout and kick someone when they're down; if they encounter a tough opponent, they'll scatter and flee in all directions.

Therefore, the person who died here could not have been a local thug, nor was he someone hired by his subordinates. In other words, it was a third-party force.

Connie took a few steps forward and came to the other end of the city wall. She held onto the parapet, which was slippery and sticky from being stained with too much blood, and peered into the city.

From her vantage point above, Connie immediately noticed the chaos within the Waterladnoine.

In the area near the western city wall, numerous torches burned and flickered haphazardly, their light mingling with sporadic gunfire and shouts of battle. Judging from the distribution and direction of the torches, three factions were engaged in combat below the city wall. The faction closest to the wall appeared to be the garrison of Wattradnoy. Although they were not numerous, they were well-equipped and trained, and they continuously opened fire in the melee.

The smoldering strings of the matchlock guns gleamed with a ghostly blue light in the rain, scattered like stars. The garrison was clearly holding their positions behind the makeshift barricades, their muskets occasionally spitting out tongues of fire indiscriminately.

The second group's torches were chaotic, clearly lacking any formation or strategy. They were the largest in number but also the most disorganized. They shouted loudly and launched haphazard attacks, assaulting both the garrison's lines and charging towards the third group.

The garrison below the city wall fired a volley of shots, and after a few flashes of gunfire landed on the ground, the soldiers would rush back in droves. Once the gunfire subsided, they would charge back towards the city wall again, only to retreat once more when gunfire resumed, and so on, over and over again.

As the attacks became more frequent, Connie also noticed that many torchbearers were taking advantage of the chaos, infiltrating from other directions and sneaking onto other staircases leading to the city walls to fight with their own people.

As for who the second party was, Connie could probably make out that they were chanting slogans like "For Mother Earth," "Love for all mankind," and "Earth's protection, invincible."

Hmm, they must be fanatics of the Church of the Earth Mother. Connie was curious about what they were up to, but she didn't think much of it... Anyway, they were enemies now, so she might as well kill them. She didn't believe in this stuff herself, so she had no scruples.

Even Connie, a layman who didn't know much about military affairs, could tell from her brief observation that these fanatical followers of the Earth Mother were just a rabble. Don't be fooled by the fact that the garrison was being overwhelmed by them; it was because the garrison wasn't going all out and was just passively taking the beating.

If the garrison were willing to take the initiative, given their level of organization, three volleys of gunfire plus a bayonet charge would easily wipe out a hundred or so lives and drive away the Earth Mother Goddess followers.

The reason they didn't do that was simply because some of the soldiers in the garrison also believed in the Earth Mother Goddess. Out of fear of the goddess, they didn't betray the garrison because of their loyalty to the military pay.

Under such circumstances, the garrison regiment could only passively endure the attack.

As for the third-party forces... Connie stood on tiptoe and looked into the distance, a look of doubt on her face.

The neat and dense flames indicated that the enemy had a considerable number of people and was well-disciplined, able to maintain formation in the night. They did not have muskets, but judging from the sounds carried by the wind, they were equipped with a number of crossbows.

The third party was at odds with both of the previous two groups. While firing arrows at the fanatics, they also launched attacks on the streets and city gates held by the garrison, but were repeatedly repelled by the garrison.

Meanwhile, a portion of the fanatics also launched attacks against the third-party forces. Although they were repeatedly driven away, the third-party forces were unable to concentrate all their forces to attack the garrison due to their involvement.

This chaotic situation gave Connie a huge headache; too many questions popped into her head all at once.

What is the Church of the Earth Mother Goddess planning at this time? Who is the third-party force? Is it the Minisians? Or the locals?
What should I do at this time? Should I go to the city hall, or go down the city wall, take down the gate, remove the obstruction, and open the city gate?
