Chapter 272 Getting Back on Track
Chapter 272 Back on Track
He finally glanced north and hit a wall.
The final result was that he covered his eyes, blood trickling from his fingers, and let out a painful, suppressed cry.
Wu Chen didn't know exactly how much he could see; all he knew was that, in his eyes, the entire Wall of Despair had transformed into a blazing, fiery barrier. The anti-magic effect within it was at its peak. And until this barrier was completely consumed by flames, even outsiders like himself and Hera would have no chance of easily crossing it.
This might buy some time for this land.
However, the value of this hard-won time still needs to be considered.
“You’ve chosen him, Dust.”
Wu Chen left the room and went to the top hall of the Black Castle, where Hera was browsing through the many ancient books in the Black Castle. Apart from Wu Chen, no one would come to disturb her.
"Do you think he can become the king who protects this land?"
“I think it’s possible,” Wu Chen replied, casually finding a comfortable chair in the hall to sit down. “He carries the weight of destiny on his shoulders. If we don’t come, and no other unexpected changes occur in this land, then ultimately, he will very likely be the guardian of Westeros.”
This is the storyline from the TV series' timeline. After Daenerys Targaryen, the last Targaryen princess, led her army across the sea from Essos, sweeping away the various kingdoms of Westeros like a storm, Jon Snow was burdened with the responsibility of killing his kin driven mad by vengeance—he would then inherit Daenerys's army and kingdom. Of course, before that, he had already joined forces with his aunt to defeat the Night King, the White Walker, who was marching south.
It seems illogical, but that's the truth. And since this unfulfilled destiny exists, this man named Jon Snow naturally possesses a hope of saving the world.
'Click—' Hera closed the book in her hand. Then she picked up another one.
"So, have you decided what you want to be in this world?" She turned to a new page, her tone calm and unhurried. "Not a god, not a king, not even a hero. What you want to be is a sage who guides heroes to their predetermined goals?"
“Not a sage.” Wu Chen shook his head and sat down in a spot not too close to Hera. He picked up the book Hera had finished reading and opened it. An old knight’s tale came into view, and the book contained many descriptions of Westeros customs and traditions.
"I'm just putting an end to what started because of me."
"Oh?" Hera raised an eyebrow slightly.
"They have been spared certain death because of our arrival. So now, I entrust a new destiny to them—they will be able to go to Winterfell and become the first to resist the march of the undead southward. As for whether their fate will end because of this, that depends on their own struggle."
“I thought you wanted to continue working as a nanny for these locals.”
"What are you talking about?" Wu Chen chuckled, looking at the description of guest rights in the travelogue. "I'm just used to handling my own problems. If I have the chance, I would indeed like to do some good deeds again. But that doesn't mean I have to risk everything when I'm not capable... Of course, that's just my current thinking."
Previously, he was influenced by external factors.
Now, he tries his best to make decisions based on his own beliefs.
"Ultimately, you have to deal with your own mess. Ultimately, you have to bear your own responsibilities. And I have lived based on this principle before and after. So..." He turned the page. He had never eaten the bread of this land, nor the salt provided by any host. Whether according to Earth or Westeros, he had no responsibility for this world.
"In the end, you have to save your own world, don't you?"
His ideas became clear at that moment. He knew exactly where his actions and desires lay.
The world he needs to protect is the world of Earth. He bears a responsibility to that world because it once nurtured him. However, now, he has already paid a price for both Earth, his original home, and Mondas, the place where he grew up.
The number may not be enough, but it's not like there aren't any that haven't even started. And beyond that—
"I have fulfilled my responsibilities to this world, and I do not believe that there is not a single warrior in this world who can stand up and fight for the world."
"If the sky falls, the tall ones will hold it up, right?" Hera chuckled. She had long noticed that Wu Chen's speaking style was somewhat similar to that of the East, and to the continent of Akavir, where information was scarce. "And we are merely guests, we can lend a hand, but we don't need to bear any more burdens. Because we were not invited here as saviors."
“That’s right.” Wu Chen put down his book. “We are just guests, and we should observe the etiquette of guests. But guests should not overstep the bounds of the host’s duties.”
He has already decided what kind of person he wants to be.
He is a guest, a traveler, a tourist, or even a passerby.
All he needs to do on this land is explore its scenery and retrieve his lost belongings. Of course, he's obligated to pay storage fees for these items. But this obligation doesn't include giving everything he has to this unfamiliar land.
A silent sense of exhilaration flowed through his thoughts.
At that moment, he realized that another side of himself, perhaps even several sides, was being erased from the depths of his heart. That was the self that was always ready to help others, even strangers, giving their all. That was the self that was indecisive, easily distracted by every unexpected event. That was the self that was cold and selfish, only thinking of amassing all available resources to propel itself upwards… They were all him, and now, they were all gone.
Now, he is a guest, a guest with good intentions, who will offer assistance wherever possible. And he will maintain this stance until he reaches his homeland, where he must exert all his strength.
The decision has been made.
Cognition and behavior are integrated into one at this moment.
He no longer hesitated, no longer felt lost, and was no longer influenced by external forces.
So, of course...
In the deepest recesses of his soul, amidst the chaotic and turbid ocean of consciousness, a spark of his soul silently ignited.
