Chapter 305 Sturgeon Gomphrena Award Results
In June 1986, on the other side of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, in the area surrounding Nanda Devi Peak, a temporary tent was set up.
This is actually a temporary command post.
Because this is a forbidden zone for life, at an altitude of over 6,000 meters, almost no humans or animals come here, so it is very quiet.
However, inside this temporary command post, all the instruments and equipment were humming.
They need to receive various types of information to ensure the successful completion of this mission.
Theodor Wagner was the highest-ranking commander in this command post.
"Damn, it's so cold here!"
After making a complaint, Wagner looked at the staff member next to him and asked how the operation was going hundreds of kilometers away.
Wagner spared no expense to ensure the successful completion of this mission and to bring the target back alive from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
All sorts of high-tech machines were brought to this area at the foot of Mount Nanda Devi.
They also applied for real-time satellite monitoring.
If he can't complete the task despite having so many backup plans, then he should retire.
"We haven't received a reply from them yet. I guess they're busy with their mission and can't attend to anything else."
"Fuck, I deployed nearly two hundred men, and this is how they carry out the mission? How come they didn't have time to report to our command post when dealing with a team of less than a hundred people?"
Wagner cursed, but that was just an expression of his anger, nothing more.
However, at that moment, the satellite phone on the table suddenly rang.
As early as 1962, AT&T launched the Telestar 1 satellite, enabling transatlantic communication, television, fax, and data transmission.
After more than 20 years of development, satellite phones are no longer a secret in the military field.
Even the Motorola 8000X phone could perform satellite positioning for emergency rescue, which is in the civilian field; the military field is naturally self-evident.
When Wagner connected via satellite phone, a hurried and deep voice came from the other end:
"Wagner, the satellite live monitoring just now confirmed that two missiles hit the area where our target was located, but these two missiles were not launched from our location."
hum!
Upon hearing this, Wagner was completely stunned; the rapid ringing in his ears almost made his brain spin.
Although it was very uncomfortable, and the dazed state didn't last long, it still made Wagner very unhappy.
But now is not the time to focus on these things; instead, we need to confirm whether the target is alive or dead.
If the target dies, then Wagner will also need to go back to retire.
After all, his superior BOSS had made it very clear: it was a living Wang Duoyu, not a Wang Duoyu corpse.
These are two different things!
Wang Duoyu's corpse is worthless!
But Wang Duoyu, who is alive, has many possibilities.
"God, why aren't you checking whether our target is dead or not?"
The person on the other end of the phone was very unhappy. He was just cooperating with the security bureau, but he didn't deserve to be yelled at like that.
So he said stiffly:
“Wagner, watch your tone. I am not your subordinate; you have no right to order me around.”
"Fuck, you better tell me now that the target is alright, or I'll definitely shoot you when I get back to America."
Wagner was met with a dial tone, indicating that the person on the other end of the line had hung up.
Unable to believe it, Wagner angrily threw the satellite phone he was holding away.
Although the satellite phone was very expensive, according to their security bureau's logistics procurement department, it cost ten thousand US dollars per unit.
But Wagner still smashed the satellite phone to pieces.
Even so, Wagner was still very angry.
I'm still furious; these people are just too damn infuriating.
On the other side, Wang Duoyu and his group heard a huge explosion. After the explosion, they quickly arrived at the scene.
Fortunately, the road is now open.
Simply leveling the ground will allow you to pass through smoothly.
So Wang Duoyu and his group quickly left the area without lingering nearby.
Right now, Wang Duoyu's safety is the most important thing; everything else is secondary.
Although it cost two missiles, it was all worth it.
After nearly two days and one night, Wang Duoyu and his group finally returned to a safe place.
The straight-line distance of 800 kilometers took them several days to cover.
In the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region, cars can't go very fast at all.
Furthermore, the mountain roads here are prone to accidents such as mudslides at any time, and since it is summer now, there is a risk of avalanches and other unexpected events.
So it's quite normal that the mountain road was blocked.
In short, nothing is surprising on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, because that's just how it is.
After returning to a safe place, Wang Duoyu did not linger. He rested for a day and then left again.
This time, he flew directly to Chengdu.
After arriving in the inland plains, Wang Duoyu finally felt completely relieved.
"Damn it, these hyena-like bastards are such a downer."
Wang Duoyu cursed. He just wanted to go to the ALD area to hide for a while and relax, but he didn't stay long. He didn't even hunt any wild yaks and was forced to leave.
How frustrating!
"Professor, shall we go back to Ice City now?"
Yuan Zuliang asked, and Wang Duoyu shook his head, saying:
"Let's not go back. Let's go to Jiuzhaigou. I reckon the houses there are already finished. I'll stay there for a few days."
In Jiuzhaigou, at the guesthouse, Liu Xiaoli and the others were astonished to see Wang Duoyu return.
"Duoyu, didn't you say you wouldn't be back until July? It's only June 25th now."
Compared to Liu Xiaoli and the others' surprise, Wang Junhong, Li Rongrong, Lu Yuening, and the other kids were much happier.
Wang Duoyu chatted with Liu Xiaoli and the others for a while, and then headed straight into the mountains.
The house inside Jiuzhaigou has been built, so Wang Duoyu will definitely go there to stay for a few days.
The house is built right by the lake, and you can see a very beautiful lake when you open the window.
The lake is crystal clear and very pleasing to the eye.
Wang Duoyu spent the next few days here.
Living in such a beautiful natural environment is great for Wang Duoyu, but it's boring for Lu Yuening and the other kids.
Because this place is far from human habitation, it is not lively at all, and is even quite lonely.
As for tourists?
There are hardly any tourists at all, especially since July is not the peak tourist season, so how many tourists would come?
So the kids couldn't wait to escape Jiuzhaigou and went to stay in a guesthouse outside.
Wang Duoyu stayed in this quiet place until July.
On July 2nd, Wang Duoyu and his group set off for Shangri-La.
Upon returning to Shangri-La, the airport runway has been renovated, and medium-sized passenger planes like the Boeing 737 can finally land smoothly.
Although it wasn't their first time in Shangri-La, Wang Junhong and his companions were still quite surprised, their exclamations never ceasing.
After spending more than a week in Shangri-La, Wang Duoyu finally prepared to return to Harbin.
By this time, Shing-Tung Yau and his colleagues had already left Harbin, and mathematicians from all over the world had gathered in Berkeley, USA, to attend this International Congress of Mathematicians.
Despite Wang Duoyu's absence, the number of attendees at this conference still exceeded 4,500, making it the largest gathering since 1966.
The reason why there were so many participants in the 1966 conference was that the Polar Bear Empire itself had 4,000 participants.
This also shows that the Polar Bear Empire has a large number of mathematics researchers.
After all, those who can attend the International Congress of Mathematicians are basically university students with a bachelor's degree in mathematics or above; otherwise, ordinary people wouldn't attend because they simply wouldn't understand the lectures.
Wang Duoyu had just returned to Harbin Institute of Technology when he received a telegram from Shing-Tung Yau. He was very surprised to learn that so many people were participating.
In the original timeline, the conference in 1986 had a total of over 3,500 participants.
Yau Shing-Tung said that everyone seemed to be looking forward to his performance as Wang Duoyu. Many people looked disappointed when they learned that he would not be attending the conference, and some even cried on the spot.
Wang Duoyu: “.”
He was speechless as he looked at the telegram. What was Shing-Tung Yau saying?
After reading the telegram, Wang Duoyu felt a little disappointed that he couldn't attend, but his mood wasn't too bad.
The closing ceremony hasn't started yet, so we don't know who will receive the Fields Medal.
However, this year's competition is truly fierce.
Even excluding Wang Duoyu, there are still eight strong contenders for the Fields Medal.
At this moment, Liu Deben and Lü Gongliang arrived at his office.
"Duoyu, you're finally back! I heard you got into some trouble in the ALD district? The boss didn't go into details, but I heard some things from Lao Li."
"I'm so glad you're back safe and sound!"
Liu Deben and Lü Gongliang both went to Beijing and only returned to Harbin Institute of Technology today, half a day later than Wang Duoyu.
Wang Duoyu casually brushed the matter aside and changed the subject, asking about their work reports in the capital.
Wang Duoyu knew that Harbin Institute of Technology was going to be upgraded to a higher level, and Liu Deben and others had communicated about it before.
"Yes, it's basically finalized, but it won't be officially documented anytime soon. We still need to conduct extensive communication and discussion with various parties, and we're not entirely clear on the specifics."
Both Liu Deben and Lü Gongliang beamed with joy when this topic was brought up.
If Harbin Institute of Technology is indeed upgraded, then their positions will also rise.
While in other schools, the positions of president and party secretary are usually held by only one person, Harbin Institute of Technology is different.
For the rest of the time, Wang Duoyu listened quietly as Liu Deben and the others recounted the situation in the capital.
Whether Harbin Institute of Technology is promoted or not has no impact on him.
However, if Harbin Institute of Technology is confirmed to be promoted, then it is indeed a good thing for the school itself.
Two more days passed in the blink of an eye, and while there was still no news from the United States, news did arrive from the Songhua River.
A fisherman caught a giant fish weighing over 500 kilograms while fishing by the river.
Many people find it hard to believe that although the Songhua River is not small, especially in Harbin where it is over a thousand meters wide, a 500-pound behemoth is still terrifying.
This isn't the Yangtze River, it's the Songhua River.
Let alone a fish weighing over 500 pounds, even a giant fish weighing over 100 pounds would be incredibly impressive.
Wang Duoyu, who had originally planned to go fishing, was immediately intrigued when he learned that such a huge creature had appeared on the Songhua River.
"Let's go and have a look at it!"
Wang Duoyu chuckled as he picked up his fishing hook and rod, preparing to head to the Songhua River to catch a giant fish.
The fishing rod he prepared wasn't anything special, but the fishing line was made of carbon fiber, which was much harder and stronger than ordinary fishing lines.
This fishing line should be able to catch giants weighing over 100 kilograms.
Yuan Zuliang and the others weren't very interested when they heard this, but they still went along anyway.
Even if the fish in the Songhua River are huge, they are still just fish.
Although the man caught a giant fish weighing over 500 pounds, his fishing line was no good and eventually broke. He only saw the giant fish roll over in a death thud, creating huge waves, before disappearing from sight.
A hotel offered a high price of 1,000 yuan to buy such a huge fish, which attracted many people to fish here.
When Wang Duoyu and his group arrived at the Songhua River, they saw a dense crowd of people in front of them.
These people all came here to fish for giant fish, just for the 1,000 RMB reward.
Although many workers at Want Want Group now earn more than 200 or even 300 yuan a month.
But a thousand yuan is equivalent to four or five months' salary for these people.
Besides, most people's salaries are only seventy or eighty or a little over one hundred, so a bonus of one thousand yuan is quite attractive.
"Professor, do you really believe there are fish weighing over 500 jin (250 kg) in the Songhua River? What kind of species would such a huge fish be?"
Standing next to Wang Duoyu, looking at the crowd of people who had come to join the fun in the distance, Mu Xiaowu asked in confusion.
"There are many kinds of fish in Northeast China, such as whitebait, lenok, mandarin fish, gudgeon, and topmouth gudgeon, but none of these fish are very heavy."
Wang Duoyu said with a smile:
"However, the several hundred kilograms of fish in the Songhua River are likely Chinese sturgeon or beluga sturgeon, both of which are extremely large."
The official name for the sturgeon should be Kaluga sturgeon, a rare species found in the Heilongjiang River. It can weigh anywhere from fifty to one hundred kilograms, or even over a thousand kilograms.
They are known for their long lifespan, enormous size, enormous appetite, and immense strength.
The Qing emperors were quite fond of sturgeon and even established a special 'sturgeon tribute' system.
The Chinese sturgeon, also known as the sturgeon, is a large fish that is widely distributed in the East China Sea, Bohai Sea, and other sea areas. It is an anadromous fish, with juveniles born in the upper reaches of rivers and then growing in the sea. During the spawning season, it swims back to inland rivers.
This is similar to fish such as the salmon from Fuyuan.
It's not uncommon for Chinese sturgeon to appear in the Songhua River, so Wang Duoyu believes there's a high probability that such ferocious giants exist in this section of the river near Harbin.
"I've learned something new, thank you, Professor!" Mu Xiaowu and the others were stunned, then expressed their gratitude with great admiration.
They did learn a lot from Wang Duoyu.
Yuan Zuliang couldn't help but say:
"Professor, I don't think you read these kinds of books much. How do you know so much?"
"Do you know what books I read?" Wang Duoyu asked with a chuckle, then continued:
"The Harbin Institute of Technology library has a lot of books, and I've already read quite a few of them."
As our ancestors said, "Read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles." By reading more, seeing more, and going to other places, you will discover that the world is truly vast.
And it's so boring!
Reading is not always a source of joy.
But if you read a lot of books, like now, if Mu Xiaowu and his friends happen to have read books on these topics, can they show off a bit?
Now that they've learned all this from Wang Duoyu, if they just memorize it a little, can they go back and apply what they've learned?
Instead of joining the others in the fun, Wang Duoyu found a secluded spot and fished alone.
However, after a whole day, although there were no empty-handed fish, I only caught a few small white fish.
We didn't even encounter any delicious fish like the Northeast catfish or the fine-scaled salmon, let alone any so-called giant fish.
So when Wang Duoyu brought these little fish back to Harbin Institute of Technology, Liu Xiaoli and the others couldn't help but burst into laughter.
“Dad, I want to go fishing with you tomorrow. We’ll catch big fish together,” Wang Junhong said from the side.
Are you going to make things worse?
The kids were making a ruckus, and Wang Duoyu, helpless, could only play along, secretly thinking, "I'm going to unleash my ultimate move tomorrow." Using loaches as bait for fishing is still permitted in this era.
If it were Wang Duoyu's past life, then it wouldn't be allowed.
Doing that is definitely illegal.
The next day, as Wang Duoyu was preparing to go to the market to buy some loaches to use as bait, a phone call came in and stopped him.
Meanwhile, in Berkeley, USA, at the closing ceremony of the 20th International Congress of Mathematicians.
When the conference chairman, Gleeson, announced the winners of this year's Fields Medal, the entire audience erupted in cheers.
The first winner was none other than Wang Duoyu, which was beyond doubt and a moment many people had been looking forward to.
For the first time since the Fields Medal was established, someone won two medals, and in two consecutive years, and Wang Duoyu was only thirty years old at the time.
Wang Duoyu was born in 1956, so this year is 1986, which means he is exactly thirty years old.
Furthermore, Wang Duoyu has published many papers over the past few years. Among them, his five major research achievements, namely the proof of the honeycomb conjecture, the restricted Bernside conjecture, the geometric Langlands conjecture, the fundamental lemma of automorphic form theory in the Langlands program, and the reciprocity law conjecture, are widely praised.
Therefore, this year's Fields Medal is also made of pure gold, very heavy and substantial, distinguishing it from the other three Fields Medals.
"Although it is very regrettable that Professor Wang Duoyu was absent from this conference and could not attend the award ceremony, we can see from his research achievements over the past few years that he has been working hard to promote the development of the Langlands Programme."
Gleason spoke with great passion:
"Perhaps in just a few years, we may see the day when the grand unified theory of mathematics is proven."
It's simply because Wang Duoyu is only thirty years old this year.
Although everyone thinks so, Gleeson's way of saying it was a bit too blunt.
Shing-Tung Yau, John Milnor, and others all frowned, clearly displeased.
Is this an attempt to flatter Wang Duoyu to his detriment?
But can Wang Duoyu's current achievements be achieved simply by praising him to death?
Even if he weren't the universally acknowledged "Emperor of Mathematics" in the mathematics world, given Wang Duoyu's age and talent, achieving further glory wouldn't be difficult.
So, is praising someone to death effective?
Gleeson is a smart man. Since he knows that flattery is useless, why would he resort to such underhanded tactics?
Can't figure it out!
But no matter what, there's nothing Yau Shing-Tung and the others can do right now; they can only listen.
The medal awarded to Wang Duoyu was accepted on his behalf by Wu Congxin, who was overjoyed.
After Wu Congxin came down, Gleeson began to announce the names of the other three people: Aranconne, Vladimir Feld, and Yorkz.
Of course, after the news was announced, the whole place erupted in cheers, and everyone stood up and spontaneously applauded.
The reason for such excitement is not because of Arancone and Vladimir Feld, who won the Fields Medal at the age of thirty-nine, but because of Jörkz.
Because Yorkz was Wang Duoyu's student, and he was born in 1957, making him one year younger than Wang Duoyu.
This also means that Yorkes is very likely to win a second Fields Medal.
It is extremely rare for a mentor and his student to receive the same award in the same year, regardless of the field.
The only pity is that Wang Duoyu was not present. Otherwise, the news of the two of them standing together to receive the award would have been absolutely sensational.
Of course, even so, once the news gets out, the whole world will definitely be in an uproar.
In Harbin, on the campus road of Harbin Institute of Technology, Wang Duoyu was sitting in his car, about to leave, when he received a call from Liu Deben.
"Duoyu, you won an award! News just came back from the US that you've won, and your student Yorkes also won the Fields Medal."
Liu Deben spoke very quickly.
Furthermore, Liu Deben also clearly stated the names of the other two Fields Medalists.
Arancone and Vladimir Feld often stayed at Harbin Institute of Technology and the Harbin Institute of Technology, so Liu Deben naturally had a general impression of them.
Since he still remembered the two of them, Liu Deben was able to quickly name them when the list came out.
Wang Duoyu was a little surprised when he heard this.
It wasn't that I was surprised by Arancone and the other two, but rather that they actually awarded him the prize.
Although he was already very confident that he would definitely win a Fields Medal at this conference, it was his second time winning it, so it wasn't certain that he would get it.
Even though he had prepared a lot, it still wasn't something he could just give away.
The Fields Medal has been awarded since 1936, and it has been 50 years since then. Not to mention now, even in Wang Duoyu's previous life, no one has ever won the Fields Medal twice.
This also shows just how incredibly prestigious the Fields Medal is.
Of all the world's top mathematicians, not a single person has ever won the Fields Medal twice in a row.
It's truly amazing that Wang Duoyu was able to win his second Fields Medal.
It's not surprising that Aranconne, Vladimir Feld, and Yorkz won the award.
He wasn't very clear about the others, but he was very clear about the situation of these three people.
Previously, everyone said that besides him, there were eight other people who were considered strong candidates for the Fields Medal, but in reality, Wang Duoyu knew very well that Yang Nianzhen and Rong Guangxia were just there for show.
They both need to keep working hard if they want to win the Fields Medal.
However, Yang Nien-jen still has a good chance, after all, she was born in 1961 and is only 25 years old this year, so she still has a great chance of winning the Fields Medal.
On the contrary, Li Jun and Li Jianshu still have opportunities, but not many.
The upper limit of talent is right there; how could Wang Duoyu not see it?
Unless he gives them a push from behind, but if that happens, would it be fair to the other students?
Gao Huajian and Wei Jiahong also have a chance, so should Wang Duoyu help them?
Therefore, the best way is for them to rely on themselves, not on Wang Duoyu.
"Old Liu, has the US said whether the next conference will be held in our Harbin?"
Upon hearing Wang Duoyu's question, Liu Deben immediately shook his head and said:
"No, the message we received only listed the Fields Medal winners; there was no other information."
Wang Duoyu nodded after hearing this.
"In that case, I understand. I'm going fishing now, bye!"
Liu Deben was stunned, listening incredulously to the dial tone coming from the phone.
Now that you've won the Fields Medal, you should at least put on a show of being happy, right?
Wang Duoyu didn't even bother to make a show of it, simply saying "oh" casually, and then asking about the location of the next conference, without saying anything else.
That's incredibly calm!
Wang Duoyu didn't know if he was being too calm; all he wanted to do right now was go to the market to buy loach.
"Professor, why are we buying loaches?"
Near the vegetable market, when Yuan Zuliang was helping to buy loach, Mou Xiaowu, who was standing next to him, suddenly asked a question.
"Buy it to eat."
"Oh, um? Professor, didn't we just have breakfast? We were supposed to go fishing, right? We don't need to buy groceries."
"You even know I don't need to buy groceries?" Wang Duoyu asked with a smile, then continued:
"Since you already know, why are you asking me? Why buy loaches? Of course, it's for fishing. Those giants will definitely eat loaches."
Mu Xiaowu and the others were dumbfounded. Using loaches to catch big fish?
Is it reliable?
If someone asked that question, Wang Duoyu would definitely tell them to remove the "ma" part.
How could it be unreliable?
Soon, Yuan Zuliang walked out of the market carrying a small bucket. Wang Duoyu nodded repeatedly after seeing the loaches in the bucket.
With loach in hand, fishing becomes much easier.
On the banks of the Songhua River, Wang Duoyu used a knife to kill several loaches to create a feeding area. Then he used a large hook to pierce a live loach and cast the hook out.
In less than three minutes, a big fish was brought up.
A catfish that weighs a full eight pounds.
But this kind of fish is not what Wang Duoyu wants at all.
Although he values participation in fishing and whether he catches a big fish is not the main point.
After pulling the catfish up, Wang Duoyu continued casting his line.
However, over the next hour or so, all the loaches were eaten, and no big fish were caught.
These big fish were either too smart, got away from the hook, or were eaten by other fish weighing seven or eight or ten pounds. In short, Wang Duoyu had been waiting for a long time, but he had never seen a giant fish weighing twenty pounds or more.
This is the Songhua River! And this is all we get?
Even though he couldn't catch the so-called giant fish, Wang Duoyu didn't become obsessed or addicted to it.
Fishing is just a pastime and a way for him to relax, nothing more.
A few days passed in the blink of an eye, and Qiu Chengtong and his group returned from the United States, along with Wu Congxin and his group.
In his office in the Mathematics Department building at Harbin Institute of Technology, Wang Duoyu received the pure gold medal from Wu Congxin. It was the same weight and shape as the one he had received in Warsaw three years ago.
Two Fields Medals, that's pretty good.
"Professor Wang, everyone outside is talking about you now," Wu Congxin said excitedly. Qiu Chengtong and others echoed, indicating that Wang Duoyu and Yorkz had indeed made history this time.
This is the first time someone has won two Fields Medals, and the first time a mentor and his student have jointly won the Fields Medal.
Although Yorkes' Fields Medal is far less prestigious than Wang Duoyu's, it is undeniable that the mentor and student did indeed win the Fields Medal.
There is no doubt about this.
A significant portion of mainstream media outlets worldwide reported on this event, meaning it has gone beyond its initial target audience.
"Let them discuss it, what does it have to do with me?"
Although the praise from others seems very nice, after all, everyone likes to hear good things.
But Wang Duoyu had a good attitude; he didn't care about any of that because he knew what he wanted.
If he wants to hear nice things, where can't he hear them?
Whether at work or at home, he hears praise most of the time, so he certainly doesn't lack these so-called nice words.
Besides, those people outside are none of his business. Let them do what they want and discuss what they want; it won't affect his life.
"Professor Wang, now that the conference is over, do you still have some papers hidden away? Can you publish them now?"
At that moment, Charles Feifman suddenly spoke.
Upon hearing this, Shing-Tung Yau and others echoed his sentiments, all of them quite excited.
As Bulge and Andrew Wiles looked at Wang Duoyu, who was surrounded by the crowd, and Yorkz, who was standing not far behind Wang Duoyu, a bitter feeling welled up in their hearts.
Wiles is the former editor-in-chief of the Harbin Institute of Technology Mathematics Journal, while Jean-Baptiste is the current editor-in-chief.
Both of them were persuaded by Wang Duoyu to stay at Harbin Institute of Technology, but to this day, they have not been able to win the Fields Medal.
However, Wang Duoyu himself has won a second Fields Medal, and his students have also won one each.
What's even more outrageous is that Yorkz is a year younger than Wang Duoyu, and he might even win a second Fields Medal, since he had the chance to win it again in 1990 and 1994.
People are more mad than people.
Now that Wang Duoyu may have hidden other research papers, Wiles and Jean-Baptiste are both nervous and helpless.
The tension is that if Wang Duoyu really has other papers, which may even be high-quality research results, then he may win an award at the 21st International Congress of Mathematicians four years later.
Unfortunately, Wang Duoyu is just too strong. He does basic mathematical research as easily as eating and drinking. It's unbelievable!
"Let's talk about it in a couple of days, haha, let's talk about it in a couple of days," Wang Duoyu said, waving his hand dismissively.
However, Charles Feifman immediately said:
"Professor Wang, let's not wait a couple of days, let's do it now. We're all here, so we can all help you review the paper. By the way, let's have Bulgeen here too. You're the editor-in-chief, don't you want to see Professor Wang's paper right now?"
Jean-Baptiste, who had been hiding in the crowd to join in the fun, immediately became the focus of everyone's attention after Charles called him out.
This makes things much easier.
Everyone unanimously requested to see the paper today, and Wang Duoyu readily agreed, saying he would produce it immediately.
Fortunately, he was prepared, so he directly took out the paper on proving the Collatz conjecture.
When John Milnor, Charles Fefman, Shing-Tung Yau, and others saw the title of this paper, they all gasped in shock.
The Collatz conjecture is a conjecture about the sequence of natural numbers, proposed by the French mathematician Paul Collatz in 1937. It is also called the 3n+1 conjecture or the hailstone conjecture.
The general idea is: given any positive integer N, if the number is odd, then perform the calculation of 3N+1; if it is even, then perform the calculation of N/2. No matter what the initial positive integer is, it will eventually fall into a loop of '4, 2, 1'.
For example, suppose we are given a positive integer 7, which is an odd number. Calculating 3N+1, we get 22.
22 is an even number, so N/2 equals 17.
就这样一直计算下去,最后我们得到了这样的一组数列:7、22、11、34、17、52、26、13、40、20、10、5、16、8、4、2、1。
It is obvious that the last three numbers in this sequence are 4, 2, and 1. If we continue to calculate, we will eventually fall into the cycle of 4, 2, and 1. This is the Kolas conjecture.
After this conjecture was proposed, it did not receive the attention it deserved until 1963, when American mathematician Robert Singer raised the problem at a mathematics conference in the United States, which gradually attracted the interest of more and more mathematicians.
Although the Kolas conjecture is not as famous as the Fermat conjecture or the Poincaré conjecture, its difficulty level is still very profound.
Since 1963, mathematicians from the United States, the Russian Empire, and Europe have studied the Collatz conjecture, especially in France.
However, more than 20 years have passed, and no one has been able to verify the Kolas conjecture.
Although the Collatz conjecture itself is not a particularly practical mathematical problem, it has been applied to many areas of computer science, such as computer simulation.
Due to its simplicity and computability, the Collatz conjecture is widely used to test computer performance, especially when testing computer hardware. It can be used to test the speed of components such as the CPU, memory, and hard drive.
To prove the Collatz conjecture, we can first prove the pseudo-Colaz conjecture, which means proving one of the following two cases:
First, the sequence calculated from positive integers never repeats, just like pi, it keeps repeating infinitely; second, the sequence calculated from positive integers has not yet returned to 1 before it starts to cycle, meaning it will still fall into the cycle, but it will not cycle in 4, 2, 1.
The Kolas conjecture sounds very simple, but in reality, trying to prove it can lead to an endless quagmire, leaving one directionless and unable to extricate oneself—it's a mathematical problem as simple as a clothes moth.
From another perspective, the shape of the Kauraz conjecture is actually very similar to a stock yield curve.
Whether you lose money or make money in the stock market, your capital will eventually fall back to 1.
Yau Shing-Tung and his colleagues don't trade stocks, but they have studied this problem because it's a simple mathematical puzzle.
The fact that everyone has studied it but no one has been able to prove it is enough to show that it is not simple.
However, everyone was stumped by the Kolas conjecture, but Wang Duoyu had already proven it, and what's even more outrageous is that he kept it hidden and never published it.
Is this the dimensionality reduction attack in the mathematics world?
"Professor Wang, have you really proven the Collatz conjecture?" John Milno asked, his eyes wide.
At this point, Charles Fefman had already arranged for copies of the paper to be made so that everyone could read it.
"Not yet, we still need your help to review the manuscript," Wang Duoyu said modestly, and Charles and the others immediately fell silent.
Just by looking at the title of the paper, they already knew that Wang Duoyu must have proven the Kauraz conjecture.
Wang Duoyu wouldn't bring it out if it hadn't been proven yet.
The group, having achieved their goal, were quickly drawn to the paper before them. Seeing this, Wang Duoyu ignored them.
Over the next few days, Qiu Chengtong and his team were reviewing papers, while Wang Duoyu went to the Weizigou campus.
After driving into the new campus, Wang Duoyu's gaze fell on the trees not far away. These big trees had been transplanted last year, but even after a year of growth, they were still not very good.
That's just how the environment is in Northeast China. It's rare to see trees that are lush and green. Even though it's July now, these trees will only grow for about six months at most. Once winter comes, they'll have to stop growing.
In Northeast China, only a few types of plants can remain evergreen in winter, such as pine, cypress, holly, bamboo, fir, and iris. Most other trees wither and die in winter.
"Duoyu, are you really not moving in?"
