The unparalleled talent of the country started from Harbin Institute of Technology
Chapter 219, Billion Supercomputing Project
Chapter 219, Billion Supercomputing Project (asking for monthly votes)
January 18, 1983, the fifth day of the twelfth lunar month.
Wang Duoyu sat in his seat, listening to the report from Ou Wenhui, the head of Huaxing Chip Company, with a slightly surprised expression.
Just now, when Wu Zhiming, the domestic head of Huayun Company, reported the simulation software revenue in China, which was only more than 8 million RMB, no one paid much attention.
Because the price of this part in China is really low.
Moreover, most scientific research institutions are reluctant to use it because they are very poor.
why?
Because no one has much funding for scientific research, especially in the context of an era where economic development is the focus, no one has much money.
Scientific research units that need to use computational fluid dynamics simulation software are generally related national defense and military units such as the Fourth Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology. Therefore, due to lack of money, they can only piece together and rely on various means to use the simulation software.
Therefore, domestic revenue is not even a fraction of foreign revenue.
The reason why Wang Duoyu was surprised by the results of Ou Wenhui's report was that the domestic chip revenue was as high as 23 million yuan, which really surprised him.
You should know that a considerable portion of the chips produced by Huaxing Chip were consumed internally by Harbin Institute of Technology and were not sold at all.
Not much is exported abroad, most of it is sold domestically.
For example, the National University of Defense Technology in Changsha also purchased tens of thousands of chips.
The remaining chip production capacity is used to supply handheld game consoles, cordless phones, etc., so the export of this part abroad is not very ideal.
In such an era, it is truly amazing that domestic chip sales can still achieve such a level.
After Huayun and Huaxing had reported, the next step was for the major revenue earners to report, starting with Huaxin Company.
At last year's summary meeting, Huaxin Company was a big spender. This year, they launched a cordless phone and immediately became a big moneymaker.
In less than a week after the cordless phone was launched in August, 4,800 units were sold, generating revenue of $9.51 million.
As the head of the cordless telephone project department of Huaxin Company, Chen Baoxi's voice was still confident when he was reporting.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, as of December 31st, our total sales of cordless phones in the United States reached 137,000 units, with total revenue of US$273.5 million."
It sold just over 10,000 units when it was launched in August, more than 10,000 and nearly 20,000 units in September and more than 20,000 units in October respectively, more than 30,000 units were sold in November, and the sales in December were even more exaggerated, almost breaking 60,000 units.
The reason why December was so strong was all thanks to the assistance from its competitor Motorola.
"The model was launched slightly later in Europe and Japan, in October and November respectively, so total sales in these two regions were only 36,000 units, generating revenue of $71.35 million, for a total annual revenue of $345 million."
There was thunderous applause in the conference room and everyone was very happy.
Huaxin Company has only launched one product so far, but it is selling very well. After all, in just over four months, it has sold about 173,000 units, which is actually very good.
I believe next year's sales data will be better.
After Chen Baoxi finished his report, it was finally Diao Pai Company's turn.
In 1982, Diao Pai Company only launched a lead-acid battery product with slightly updated technology, and nothing else.
Even so, the sales of Diao Pai's electric bicycle products in Europe and the United States have soared. Coupled with the steady growth of batteries, motors and other products, the total revenue they earned from overseas exports reached US$950 million.
This is an increase of US$155 million compared to US$795 million in 1981.
Such revenue data is extremely impressive.
As the head of Diao Pai Company, Zhang Jichuan seemed particularly calm when he spoke, because such performance growth was actually very ordinary, and he was no longer that excited.
It’s like a student who usually scores 90 points in exams, and now gets 91 points in the final exam. That’s the same as usual, so of course there’s nothing to be excited about.
“What a joy of harvest.”
Jin Lirong couldn't help but applaud and laugh, then continued, "Next, please welcome Yin Wenjie, the head of our Dolphin Games company."
In February 1982, Huashun Company's business was split, and the gaming business was assigned to Dolphin Game Company.
Yin Wenjie was also promoted directly from the head of handheld game consoles at Huashun Company to the head of Dolphin Game Company.
Dolphin Games' handheld game console products were launched on New Year's Day in 1983. In less than two months, global sales exceeded 4 million units, and revenue exceeded US$1.6 billion.
In the following ten months, the global sales of this handheld game console alone reached a new high, with sales of 8.52 million units.
The total sales volume for the whole year reached 12.57 million units, but the revenue decreased slightly. Why?
With such huge revenue figures, the price must have dropped. Otherwise, how could there be so many sales worldwide?
The original sales price was US$399 per unit, but the price dropped to US$349 in the second half of the year, and even dropped to US$299 by the end of the year.
Therefore, the average price of the subsequent sales of 8.52 million units was only around US$332, and the total annual revenue was US$4.439 billion.
It is actually quite difficult to bring such huge revenue data home safely.
The American Nielsen business research company is very annoying and specifically monitors the sales of Dolphin Games.
There is no way around it. Dolphin Games is definitely the most powerful gaming company in the world right now, no doubt about it.
The current Dolphin Games Company actually not only produces handheld game consoles, but also has launched game cartridges such as "Super Mario", "Tank War", and "Squirrel War", and these products are very popular in sales around the world.
Especially in Japan, these products are regulars in the top ten of Japan's game cartridge sales rankings. Even the two games "Super Mario" and "Chinese Cube" take turns to be the champion, and have a large gap with the third place.
Under such circumstances, Dolphin Games' revenue data for the whole year of 1982 was of course extremely impressive.
The total revenue was just a little bit away from breaking through 5 billion US dollars, which immediately caused the entire conference room to burst into cheers and the applause lasted for more than five minutes.
Wang Duoyu is also very happy. Of course he is very happy that these products can be rampant around the world and become the "electronic pornography" of developed countries.
It can not only make a lot of money, but also promote Chinese culture and make consumers unable to stop.
What a win!
Nearly five billion US dollars in revenue is a huge amount of money, so getting it back will certainly take a lot of thought.
First, continuous investment was given to Lotte Group. Throughout the year, the group took away 1.2 billion US dollars.
Lotte Group has purchased a large amount of land to develop real estate, and even hired workers and construction talents from China to work in Japan to earn labor dispatch fees.
At the same time, a number of giant marine ships were purchased to form a huge maritime transport fleet.
In short, these 1.2 billion US dollars are definitely worth the money.
If the 5 billion US dollars were brought back to the country, it might cause some people to become nervous.
Therefore, it is very necessary to paralyze the other party's nerves.
The second is to purchase a large number of equipment from the United States, Japan, etc., such as automated machine tools needed for some production lines, as well as laboratory equipment.
Harbin Institute of Technology has so many departments and project teams, so of course it needs a lot of laboratory equipment.
Therefore, there is absolutely no problem in purchasing directly through Dolphin Games' accounts.
The third is to import materials such as oil, minerals, steel, grain, etc., which are all materials needed domestically.
Let’s not talk about anything else, just talk about steel. The country needs to consume a large amount of steel every year, especially now that the Ice City has entered a period of large-scale construction.
Maybe Dolphin Games doesn't need so many offices, but Huaxing Chip Company, Huashun Company, etc. definitely need a lot.
Since we need to build houses, we definitely need a lot of steel.
Besides, the country is now concentrating on economic development, building bridges, roads and houses, which requires steel everywhere, as well as large amounts of cement, bricks, river sand, etc.
Purchasing sand and other materials directly from the United States would definitely be too much and not worth the cost.
However, there is absolutely no problem in purchasing sand, bricks, etc. from Southeast Asia, Australia, etc.
Forget about Japan. They are extremely short of resources in their own country. They don’t even have sand, minerals, etc.
After these three measures, there is actually very little left of the 5 billion US dollars in revenue.
It really proves the saying that you earn money abroad and spend it abroad, don't even think about bringing a penny home.
After Yin Wenjie finished his report, he went to Huashun Company.
Huashun Company currently only has three products: optical disk storage, HS213 hard disk storage and HS215. HS215 is an advanced version of HS213 and was launched in September .
The GT316 solid-state drive is still a confidential product and the outside world has no idea about it.
The sales of these two products in 1982 were just okay.
At the end of 213, IBM issued a series of price adjustment announcements, so the price of the HS4999 hard drive was directly reduced from the original US$1999 to US$.
The HS215 hard drive storage has a design capacity of 512MB, a slightly better transmission speed of 4MB/s, and a slightly more expensive price of US$8999.
This product actually overlaps with optical disk storage, but it is mainly aimed at IBM's 3370 product.
Use optical disk storage and HS215 to target IBM's 3370, so IBM's storage business department simply won't do it.
The price of 3370 was $, and they didn't dare to lower the price any further.
Because of the price war, IBM could not defeat Huashun Company at all.
After being attacked from all sides, IBM's memory department could only give up and wait for the right opportunity to launch a surprise attack.
Therefore, throughout 213, Huashun Company achieved a revenue of US$215 million thanks to its three products: optical disk storage, HS and .
Because the unit price is high, even if the sales volume is average, the revenue data is very good.
After reporting the revenue, Niu Ruishan suddenly asked:
"Professor Wang, when will our GT316 product be launched on the market?"
Last year, Huashun Company's total revenue was US$83,171. Although it also included products such as the "China Cube" game cartridge, Huashun Company should have been the biggest winner this year.
Unfortunately, the spin-off of Dolphin Games resulted in Huashun Company's revenue being mediocre.
However, Niu Ruishan believes that if Huashun can launch the GT316, or even a personal computer, it will surely be able to return to the top spot in terms of revenue.
Today, Harbin Institute of Technology's first department has products such as memory, chips, software systems, and can even independently develop and produce processors and other computer components.
In other words, there is absolutely no problem in developing your own computer products.
"There's no rush for now!"
Wang Duoyu heard this and shook his head and said:
"The current market situation doesn't actually require flash memory. We can continue to focus on research and development, but we also need to be open to the world and not be left behind."
"If you've been following Toshiba in Japan, you'll know that their flash memory technology R&D team has been severely suppressed. If possible, we at Dolphin Games in Japan could try to poach some of their people."
"Although there's a high probability that I won't be able to dig it out, I still have to try. What if?"
"Toshiba is simply using flash memory technology as a weapon, so many research institutes and companies are reluctant to continue down this path."
“This is our opportunity.”
"We are not strong enough yet, so we are not in a hurry to release this product. Even if we want to launch our own personal computer products, we will not rush to pair the GT316 solid-state drive with the computer."
Hearing Wang Duoyu's words, everyone nodded.
However, Niu Ruishan was very excited because personal computer products were definitely the products he wanted to make most.
From his original purely technical R&D position to his current technical administrative position, Niu Ruishan is more clear about what he should do next.
Yin Wenjie, Liu Qigang and others also widened their eyes, and the heads of other project teams were even more so.
"Professor Wang, are we also going to launch our own personal computer?"
Niu Ruishan asked, and Wang Duoyu smiled and nodded:
"Yes, the current technology and market have actually begun to try to launch our personal computer products, but we don't need to rush. We can discuss this matter after the Spring Festival. Let's have a meeting first."
Seeing this, everyone's enthusiasm cooled down a little.
At this time, Jin Lirong gave applause and invited Executive Vice President Han Jue to speak.
The order in which leaders speak is also very strict. Now it is the Executive Vice President Lao Han, followed by Lu Gongliang, and then Liu Deben.
As for Wang Duoyu, he didn't speak, because he was present throughout the entire meeting, answering questions from time to time or interrupting to make explanations.
"Well, just now, the heads of all the companies have reported their revenue for the whole of last year. I think everyone has an idea of the revenue of our Harbin Institute of Technology's affiliated companies over the past year."
Han Jue directly summarized the revenue of six companies including Huashun, Diaopai, Dolphin, Huaxin, Huaxing and Huayun. Of course, Lotte Group will not appear at today's meeting.
Excluding Dolphin Games, the total overseas revenue of the five companies including Huashun is US$2.38 billion. If we add the nearly US$5 billion from Dolphin Games, the total is just over US$7.3 billion.
Such data accounted for a very high proportion of the national export product revenue in 1982.
In the history of the original time and space, according to the data from the Customs Statistics Bureau, the export volume in 1982 was 414 million yuan. According to the dual exchange rate system, it should be roughly converted to 14.7 billion US dollars.
However, in this time and space, the seven great giants under Harbin Institute of Technology produced a report card of 7.3 billion US dollars, which was an impressive performance.
If the data from the original time and space is used, then the industries under Harbin Institute of Technology will be able to account for 49.6% of China's annual exports, nearly half of the share.
At this time and space, we don’t have the data from the Customs Statistics Bureau yet, so it’s not very clear yet.
But even so, Han Jue also explained that last year, Harbin Institute of Technology's affiliated enterprises only earned 1.5 billion US dollars, while the country earned 4 billion US dollars, which accounts for a very high proportion.
But this year it will be higher.
Amidst thunderous applause in the entire conference room, Wang Duoyu smiled and shook his head, saying that Harbin Institute of Technology's glory was limited to these few years.
Because as time goes by, with the deepening of reform and opening up, the national market will be completely revitalized. By then, it will be impossible for Harbin Institute of Technology to still have a smaller share in the national export volume, as the denominator is getting smaller.
impossible!
The denominator will only get bigger!
So, if we look at it from this perspective, then Harbin Institute of Technology is almost in its last glorious era.
Even in 1982 in this time and space, the national export volume may be more than 41.4 billion in the original time and space.
Because under the influence of Wang Duoyu, companies affiliated with Harbin Institute of Technology made huge profits by going overseas. Many people would of course be jealous and would certainly try to find ways to do it.
For example, universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Han Jue's speech did not last long, because he knew very well that Wang Duoyu was present and he could not talk nonsense, otherwise he might be criticized after the meeting.
After he finished speaking, the next item of the summary meeting was the reserved item: the grievance meeting!
If you make money, you must spend it.
Harbin Institute of Technology has many scientific research projects, all of which cost money.
Lack of people, money, technology, everything.
It doesn’t mean that a top university like Harbin Institute of Technology has no shortage of talents. That’s not the case. It definitely has a shortage of talents.
Funding will never be enough, because a Mach 5 fighter jet project is enough to make many people despair. Of course, at present, Harbin Institute of Technology only has a national-level large-scale scientific research project such as the Mach 5 fighter jet, and the others are small projects.
When it comes to spending money, Wang Duoyu is definitely the person who spends the most in the entire conference room.
After everyone submitted their spending plans, Wang Duoyu put down his pen and suddenly interrupted Jin Lirong.
"Director Jin, please pause for a moment. I'd like to discuss a project with you using the flow of today's meeting."
"Supercomputer!"
Everyone was stunned when these words were spoken. Niu Ruishan had just said whether he would launch a personal computer, but now it has become a supercomputer?
The National University of Defense Technology in Changsha is already developing a supercomputer that can perform more than 100 million calculations per second: the Galaxy supercomputer!
According to the research and development progress in the original time and space, it was successfully developed on December 22, 1983.
But in this time and space, it may be a little earlier.
Because Harbin Institute of Technology has developed a step-and-scan lithography machine in the past few years, as well as the distributed computer developed by Wang Duoyu.
Wang Duoyu looked at everyone, took out a plan in his hand, and said calmly:
"This is a proposal for a computer capable of operating at an exaflop speed. I've detailed the required hardware and software technologies."
"As a university, Harbin Institute of Technology is already at the forefront of China's computer field. After we have developed a lithography machine and continue to launch better and better computer hardware products, I believe we have basically met the conditions for developing a supercomputer."
What he said is not without reason.
Take the Galaxy giant supercomputer being developed by the National University of Defense Technology as an example. They referred to the overall architecture of the most advanced Cray1 supercomputer in the United States and then carried out division of labor and cooperation.
Led by the National University of Defense Technology, the team brought together the country's top scientific research and technical teams. Over the past six years, they have checked each of the piles of test paper tapes one by one.
To ensure the stability and reliability of the machine, they need to carefully inspect 2.5 winding wires, 12 winding points and more than 200 million solder points.
At that time, Ci Yungui's team creatively proposed a dual-vector array structure, which greatly improved the machine's computing speed, thus completing the planned development task one year ahead of schedule.
The investment exceeds 100 million yuan, and the scientific research team has more than 200 people.
If we only refer to the Galaxy giant supercomputer project, then Harbin Institute of Technology can undoubtedly initiate its own project and promote a supercomputer with a computing speed of tens of billions.
Why not develop a computer project with a computing speed of one billion floating points, but directly develop a project with a transportation speed of tens of billions of floating points?
Because in 1982, that is, last year, the United States had developed the world's first parallel vector computer, with a computing speed exceeding one billion floating-point calculations per second.
Therefore, Wang Duoyu simply looked down on supercomputers with a computing speed of one exaflop.
One step at a time, one step at a time.
If we don't speed up, the United States, the Polar Bear Empire, and even Japan will catch up.
In short, we must accelerate across the board, otherwise we will be overtaken.
Because after entering the mid-to-late 1980s, the global computer industry has begun to turn to large-scale parallel computing systems, that is, with the goal of catching up with supercomputers like Cray.
If Wang Duoyu had also taken it slow, he would have been led by the nose by others.
This was certainly not a scene he wanted to see.
Besides, Cray will not stop, and so will Intel and others.
A supercomputer with a floating-point computing speed of 100 exaflops may seem far away, but for European and American countries, it is as easy as eating and drinking water, because they have money and connections.
"Professor Wang, if I remember correctly, Cray's Cray X-MP/2 supercomputer is a fast but expensive single-chip supercomputer. Other countries have only developed supercomputers capable of floating-point operations, and some are even developing supercomputers capable of billion floating-point operations. If Harbin Institute of Technology were to develop a supercomputer capable of billion floating-point operations, it would likely take ten or even twenty years to develop. Is it worth it?"
Niu Ruishan raised his questions before even looking through the plan.
As soon as this was said, Liu Taoshun, the director of the Department of Information Science and Engineering, and others nodded in agreement.
As everyone knows, Cray Corporation of the United States is currently the most powerful company in the field of supercomputers, without a doubt.
Cray is already in the leading position, so how can Harbin Institute of Technology catch up?
Even if Harbin Institute of Technology directly launches the exaflop supercomputer project, will it definitely succeed?
Even if it succeeds, it may be many years later. Is it still necessary?
According to Moore's Law, proposed by Intel founder Gordon Moore in 1965, the number of transistors that can be accommodated on an integrated circuit will double every 18 to 24 months, and the performance will also double.
In other words, the performance of integrated circuits will become faster and faster as time goes by.
This can be seen from the rapid development of the computer industry in the past decade.
In 6600, Control Data Corporation of the United States developed the CDC mainframe computer with a performance of one million floating-point operations per second. Throughout the s, CDC almost monopolized the mainframe computer market.
In 100, they introduced the CDC STRA-, which used a vector processor.
In 1, Cray used the integrated circuit invented by Fairchild Semiconductor to develop the world's first single-vector machine supercomputer with a pipeline structure: Cray2.5, with a floating-point operation speed of million times per second.
Then came the Cray X-MP/2 supercomputer with a gigaflop speed in .
Therefore, it may take less than five years for Cray Corporation of the United States to break through to the supercomputer with a performance of 100 billion floating-point operations.
But is it possible for Harbin Institute of Technology to overtake others within five years?
This is a very realistic issue. Technology is like this. It is not simply what you say it is. Behind it represents the comprehensive reflection of the entire country's manufacturing industry, industrial technology accumulation, talent accumulation, etc.
Is it possible for a super genius to go to a place like Africa and build a missile by hand?
That’s definitely not possible, but Qian Xuesen was able to develop missiles in a place like China.
With industrial foundation, talent, capital and technology, it is entirely possible to achieve this.
But now we are talking about a supercomputer project, and we have to compete with Cray, so we inevitably need to clearly understand the advantages and disadvantages.
In response to Niu Ruishan's question, Wang Duoyu pointed to the plan and said:
"First, you can take a look at the plan. I've explained it very clearly there. I'm definitely not talking nonsense."
"The key to overtaking others is already in the plan. Now let me talk about the second point, which is our funding. There is absolutely no problem with that. The project duration is two years, and the total investment is 500 million RMB. As for the talent, we will select from within Harbin Institute of Technology."
After hearing what Wang Duoyu said, everyone couldn't help but lower their heads and flip through the books.
Soon, they found the key point, which was the large-scale parallel processing technology proposed by Wang Duoyu.
This technology can actually be understood as using multiple processors in parallel in a computer to achieve the same high-speed computing capabilities.
Wu Zhiming suddenly said:
"Professor Wang, isn't this the parallel computer you told us about before? Is this technology really feasible?"
Zhao Jiawei and others also nodded repeatedly to show their agreement.
In 1979, Wang Duoyu established a distributed computer project, and Wu Zhiming, Fan Honggeng, Zhou Sitong and others were all involved in this project.
During the development of this project, Wang Duoyu mentioned the parallel computer project that Professor Xia Peisu and his team in Beijing were developing.
You should know that parallel computing or serial computing is relative to serial computing. It is an algorithm that can execute multiple instructions at a time. The purpose is to increase the computing speed and solve large and complex computer problems by expanding the scale of problem solving.
The so-called parallel computing can be divided into temporal parallelism and spatial parallelism. The former is pipeline technology, and the latter refers to the concurrent execution of calculations by multiple processors.
"It's definitely different!"
Wang Duoyu shook his head and said:
"Forget it. I should have told you this after the project started, but I'll explain it briefly now so you don't have any doubts."
“Massive parallel processing technology is a computer architecture based on distributed computing that achieves high-performance system processing by using a large number of homogeneous processing units working together.”
"The core idea is to distribute computing tasks across multiple nodes and then aggregate the results from each node to produce the final result. In short, this project is very similar to our previous distributed computing projects, and that's what I'm confident about. Do you understand?"
what?
Liu Deben, Lu Gongliang, Han Jue and others were all confused. Anyway, they didn't really understand these technologies.
However, judging from the expressions of Wu Zhiming and the others, they seemed to understand, but it was hard to say whether this technology would work.
After all, the distributed computer that Wang Duoyu had previously led and developed had a final computing power level of more than 80 million operations per second, which is also the best computer technology in the country at present.
However, since mid-1980s, after completing the distributed computer project, Wang Duoyu has not started any computer-related scientific research projects.
Because I’m poor and have no money!
You should know that when the distributed computer project was established, the total R&D funding was 5 million RMB, and there were only 30 R&D personnel.
At that time, most of the technical research and development work was done by Wang Duoyu. Zhou Sitong, Wu Zhiming, Fan Honggeng and others did not contribute much to the technical work, they were just executing.
“So this project can go forward, right?”
Lu Gongliang suddenly asked.
He didn't know much about computer technology. Although he was a mathematics professor, he taught mathematical mechanics, and later he switched to an administrative position.
So he roughly understood by now that Wang Duoyu had experience and that this was a project he was leading, exactly the same as the previous distributed computer project.
But it was not like the previous lithography machine project, handheld game console project, etc. Wang Duoyu was only a technical guide and occasionally gave advice.
Wang Duoyu nodded, and everyone continued to talk about this topic. Twenty minutes later, the exaflop supercomputer project named Nebula was approved.
Other project leaders, department heads, etc. were extremely envious when they saw this scene.
Five hundred million RMB, I’ll give it to you right away!
However, this project was led by Wang Duoyu himself, so of course it was completely different.
Moreover, they had previously successfully developed a distributed computer capable of achieving a floating-point computing speed of 80 million times per second, so it was normal that Liu Deben and other school leaders were willing to approve this project.
Developing a supercomputer with a computing speed of more than 10 billion times per second requires multi-core processors, graphics processors, high-speed network interfaces, high-speed storage devices, local memory, network interface circuits, etc.
Multi-core processors can provide multiple processing cores, each of which can execute tasks independently, thereby improving overall parallel processing capabilities.
The distributed computer developed by Wang Duoyu and his team previously developed a processor with three cores.
This multi-core processor has many technical limitations, such as power consumption.
The main job of transistors is to provide information for calculations by flipping. To make transistors flip, you need to provide them with energy, and when they flip, they will generate heat.
From an ordinary single-core processor to a processor with three cores, the energy provided to the chip per unit time - that is, power consumption, will gradually increase, and the heat will become more and more severe.
This requires program optimization and fan cooling.
In addition, there are also issues of interconnect delay and design complexity.
Because in addition to transistors, the chip also has interconnection lines. Its main job is to pass the results of one transistor to another transistor, and it plays the role of a workshop porter.
According to Moore's Law, the speed of transistors is getting higher and higher, but the interconnection lines are getting slower and slower.
For example, the number of assembly lines in a factory is increasing, and many steps are spent on moving things from one workshop to another.
This is the problem of interconnection delay.
The last one is the design complexity issue. As the number of transistors increases, the design space, design complexity and verification difficulty of chip design will increase significantly.
So, just the idea of a multi-core processor raises a lot of questions.
Moreover, these technical problems are extremely difficult. If it weren't for Wang Duoyu, ordinary people really wouldn't be able to lead such a project.
Therefore, it is easy to imagine how the 500 million RMB R&D funds were spent.
After the project was finalized, Lu Gongliang gave a summary, in which he comforted everyone by saying that the difficulties were only temporary and the future was bright.
After finishing this bowl of chicken soup, move on to the next step.
This is the annual summary meeting, so naturally, it is not just about talking about how much money has been made and what difficulties have been encountered. As a university, the most important thing for Harbin Institute of Technology is to cultivate talents.
So the third topic of the meeting is actually about next year's enrollment work.
Undergraduate students are the foundation, while master's and doctoral degrees are the key to whether Harbin Institute of Technology can maintain its position as a top university, because those scientific research projects require a large number of scientific research talents.
The outstanding undergraduates trained by Harbin Institute of Technology cannot all run away. Some of them must be retained to allow them to pursue postgraduate studies or participate in scientific research projects, or to join enterprises affiliated with Harbin Institute of Technology.
In short, next year's enrollment and recruitment work will still be very arduous.
"I need to commend Professor Wang here. You have already reserved a mathematical genius."
Liu Deben suddenly said something, and everyone in the conference room immediately applauded and laughed happily.
Wang Duoyu also laughed, but soon, Liu Deben's next words made him stop laughing.
"But Duoyu, I still want to criticize you. Can you take on a few more students? Look, we have several very outstanding students in our gifted class. You can definitely take them on."
"I heard that many top scorers in the college entrance examination came here just for you."
There is nothing wrong with this statement, because Wang Duoyu is definitely an idol in the hearts of young people.
Because Wang Duoyu is very young, but very famous, and most importantly, he often appears in newspapers.
In the entire Department of Mathematics at Harbin Institute of Technology, almost more than 90% of the students are admirers of Wang Duoyu.
Last year, that is, in 1982, many of the top scorers in the college entrance examination applied to the Department of Mathematics at Harbin Institute of Technology because of Wang Duoyu.
Also because of Wang Duoyu, the Department of Mathematics at Harbin Institute of Technology has become the top-ranked department in the country and also the most famous department.
To some extent, in the eyes of many high school students, Peking University is not that famous.
So, in this case, Wang Duoyu should also choose the best from the best and select a few more students, right?
Wang Duoyu spread his hands. This time he didn't want to explain anymore.
Today's meeting is almost over here.
It was even delayed because Wang Duoyu just mentioned the project of a 100 billion floating-point supercomputer.
"Duoyu, come on, let's sit in my office."
Just after the meeting, Liu Deben stopped Wang Duoyu again. There was no other way, so he went to his office to talk.
But this time Wang Duoyu rejected the other party:
"Secretary, if you have anything to say, just tell me directly. Keep it short. I still need to go back and sort things out. I'm busy."
Nowadays, Wang Duoyu has more work on hand.
The ultra-long-term mission includes the derivation and proof of the strong solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, the long-term mission is the Mach 5 fighter jet project, the medium- and long-term mission is the exascale supercomputer project that is about to be launched, and the mid-term mission is the geometric Langlands conjecture. As for short-term projects, there are none for the time being.
In fact, the geometric Langlands conjecture has been derived to the middle of the third article, and there are only about two and a half articles left to complete.
But just the above few projects are enough to keep Wang Duoyu busy for a long time.
