Chapter 561 The Truth Revealed: Pretending to be Weak to Deceive the Strong
"...Okay, see you in a bit."
Laura hung up the phone with a complicated expression and said to Gao Dongxu, "She said she's waiting for me in the foundation's office."
"Let's go find her and get to the bottom of this." A sharp glint flashed in Gao Dongxu's eyes as he gently patted Laura's back.
"Hmm." Laura nodded softly, stood up, walked to the bedside, looked at her unconscious adopted son, gently stroked his cheek, and then turned and walked out of the ward with Gao Dongxu.
When Gao Dongxu and Laura entered this medieval church-like building, they felt as if they had entered a luxury hotel rather than the office of some foundation.
It seems that Laura's foster mother and her group have made quite a bit of money over the past twenty years and know how to enjoy life.
Laura quickly led Gao Dongxu to the door of her adoptive mother's office and knocked.
"Please come in——"
Upon hearing their adoptive mother's voice, Laura and Gao Dongxu exchanged a glance, took a deep breath to calm their complicated emotions, and opened the door to enter.
In the spacious and bright office, Laura and Gao Dongxu saw Supile Weipo sitting alone in the boss's chair behind his desk, with a kind smile on his face.
"Mother--"
"Hello, Ms. Wei Po—"
"Hmm, hello, please have a seat—" Superior Webo said with a smile as he stood up, "What would you like to drink?"
"No need, Mom, you sit down..." Laura looked at her ailing adoptive mother with complicated emotions. The thought that the woman might be the murderer of her parents filled her with immense sadness and pain.
Supilevipo looked at Laura, smiled and nodded, then sat down again, gesturing for the two of them to sit down as well.
Gao Dongxu and Laura sat down in the chair opposite her. Su Pilebo looked at Laura, who had sat down in silence, with a serious expression and strange eyes, and asked softly, "Laura, you said on the phone that you had something important to ask me. What do you want to ask?"
Laura stared intently at her adoptive mother, her gaze complex. She took out a photograph from her bag, her fingers trembling slightly. The yellowed photo seemed unusually heavy between her fingers.
She placed the photo on her desk and slowly pushed it to the center of the desk.
Laura's adoptive mother, Suebel, whose smile had vanished, stared silently at the group photo of the six people in the picture.
“Mom,” Laura’s voice seemed to come from afar, even she herself felt a sense of unfamiliarity, “tell me the truth. The truth about my parents’ deaths.”
The office suddenly became eerily quiet; even the hum of the central air conditioning had ceased. Hot air continued to blow from the vents, yet it offered no warmth whatsoever. Gao Dongxu reached out and grasped Laura's trembling hand; his presence gave her the last shred of courage to hold on.
Supiel's gaze fell on the photograph, and in that instant, Laura saw something shatter in her adoptive mother's eyes. The first crack appeared in the mask of that always elegant and composed strong woman.
“I knew this day would come.” Supile’s voice suddenly turned cold. She slowly stood up, walked to the window, and turned her back to them. “I just didn’t expect it would be you who came to question me personally.”
Laura felt a wave of dizziness. She grabbed the edge of the desk for support. "So it's true? You...you killed them?"
Supel suddenly turned around, his eyes flashing with a cold light Laura had never seen before: "We have no choice! Your parents are too naive; they want to hand those spirit stones over to the government! That's the power that could change our fate!"
Gao Dongxu grabbed Laura's trembling, agitated hand and began to probe, "So you murdered your colleague? For a few stones?"
"A few stones?" Supel let out a sharp laugh, looking at the excited Laura and the frowning Gao Dongxu with mockery and disdain. They were just ignorant mortals.
“More than twenty years ago, our six-person expedition team entered the restricted area of northern Mongolia from Siberia.” Supel’s voice became distant, as if recounting an ancient legend, “That was a sacred site of shamanism, a place where, according to legend, spirits communicated with humans. We discovered that altar and the shaman who guarded it.”
Laura's gaze remained fixed on Supil, tears welling in her eyes but stubbornly refusing to fall. The last glimpses of her parents before their deaths were recounted so casually, as if they were merely insignificant memories.
“We witnessed the sacrificial ceremony firsthand,” Supel continued, his fingers lightly tracing the surface of the spirit stone hanging around his neck. “An ordinary person gained extraordinary power through the power of the spirit stone. At that moment, we understood the value of these spirit stones.”
Gao Dongxu narrowed his eyes slightly: "So you decided to steal them."
“Those primitive people don’t deserve such power—” Supel suddenly became agitated, “but your parents…they insisted on reporting it. They said such power should be handed over to the government.” Her expression twisted into a ferocious mask. “That night, we argued until late in the tent. After they fell asleep, we did what had to be done.”
Laura felt a wave of nausea rise in her throat, and she bent over, almost vomiting. Gao Dongxu's hand firmly supported her shoulder.
“You four murderers,” Laura’s voice trembled, “then why…why did you adopt me? Were you feeling guilty?” Supil’s expression suddenly became complex, anger mixed with an emotion Laura couldn’t decipher: “Before your mother died, she begged me to take care of you and adopt you. Besides your mother’s influence, it was also to monitor you and ensure you wouldn’t discover the truth.”
These words pierced Laura's heart like a knife. Twenty years of nurturing had turned out to be nothing more than an elaborate deception. She felt something crumbling within her, while something new was sprouting from the ground.
Gao Dongxu keenly noticed Laura's change: "Laura? Are you alright?"
Laura didn't answer. She just stared intently at her foster mother, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably.
“You wouldn’t understand,” Super said with a look of obsession and madness. “How magical and powerful the spirit stone is.”
"Unfortunately, it still can't save your life," Gao Dongxu sneered.
"Hmph—" Su Pile sneered at Gao Dongxu, a mocking expression on his face. He said with a hint of smugness, "You mortals will never understand the wonder and power of the extraordinary world. As long as I bring Liu Can to the altar, convene the Spirit Stone Conference, and kill him with my guardian spirit, I can not only recover but also regain my youth and gain immortality—"
"Don't even think about it! I will never let you hurt him. You monster—" Laura's vision was blurred with tears, but even stronger was the burning anger in her chest.
Supelle sneered, looking at Laura with a complicated expression, and said, "That child was also someone I arranged for you to adopt. Six years ago, we found him in Thailand following divine guidance and brought him to Paris. All of this was arranged long ago."
I originally intended to complete the plan quietly, but I never expected those damned Mongols to send guardians to stop the Spirit Stone Conference, which gave you the opportunity to discover the truth.
I've already planned your life perfectly. You could have known nothing, inherited my fortune, and lived a good life. Why do you want to find out the truth? Why?
“You devil—” Laura screamed hysterically at Superior.
"Hahaha," Supel looked at Laura, whose eyes were filled with hatred, his last bit of emotion vanished, and he sneered, "Come out, all of you—"
Gao Dongxu frowned slightly, shielding Laura behind him. Suddenly, a door in the office opened, and a man and a woman walked out, the man pushing a man in a wheelchair.
"How is this possible? You—" Upon seeing the people who appeared, Laura, standing behind Gao Dongxu, stared wide-eyed, her face filled with disbelief and sorrow, her lips trembling, and she almost fainted.
Gao Dongxu quickly reached out and embraced Laura's voluptuous body, asking with concern, "Are you alright?"
Seeing the two so intimately, the pale-faced, listless white European man in a wheelchair looked jealous and his eyes were filled with murderous intent as he stared at Gao Dongxu.
"Isn't that surprising?" Super looked at Laura, who seemed unable to accept reality, and sneered, "Your best friend and ex-boyfriend were also arranged by me. From childhood to adulthood, everything about you has been under my control."
The man in the wheelchair weakly raised his head, a flicker of jealousy and anger in his eyes. Despite his sickly appearance, the possessiveness in his gaze towards Laura remained intense.
Clarice—Laura's confidante with whom she shared countless secrets—smiled apologetically. "Laura, don't look at me like that. We had no choice. Ms. Superior gave us conditions we couldn't refuse."
“What are the conditions?” Laura’s voice was hoarse. “Money? Or those damn stones?”
Clarice didn't answer, but simply touched the totem stone hanging around her neck.
Gao Dongxu felt Laura trembling in his arms, not from fear, but from pure anger.
“Laura, calm down,” he whispered in her ear. “Anger is exactly what they want.”
But Laura seemed deaf to it. She broke free from Gao Dongxu's embrace, stood up straight, and looked directly at Su Pile: "You killed my parents, manipulated my life, and now you want to use an innocent child?" Her voice was low and dangerous. "I swear, as long as I live, I will never let you succeed."
Supplies suddenly burst into laughter, the sound echoing through the spacious office: "Darling, do you think you have a choice? Grab her."
Clarice and the tall, strong white man took a step forward at the same time, but just as they were about to touch Laura, Gao Dongxu's eyes narrowed, he stomped his foot, gathered his inner energy, and rushed directly in front of Laura, meeting the man and woman who reached out to grab her. With a powerful punch, his fists slammed into the chests of the two men.
"boom--"
"what--"
"puff--"
Two thuds, two screams, two mouthfuls of blood—the two men lay on the ground, vomiting blood and wailing, as Laura and the others stared in shock.
