Chapter 468 Mission: 02-1 Returning to the Homeland
Hey sweethearts! Did you miss me?
The doors of Devil May Cry's office swung open, letting sunlight stream into the office, which was without water and electricity due to poor management. The interior was pitch black; the retro decor and neglected state of affairs made it look like a vampire's dwelling.
However, there doesn't seem to be any living person here.
“I told you leaving the firm to them wouldn’t work.” A voice almost identical to the one before rang out, followed by another shadow cast by sunlight on the tiles: “But, hmm… things seem a little different from what I suspected?”
"It's hard to say. I'm starting to believe what you're saying."
More people then appeared, and the entrance to the firm was immediately packed with people.
The Spartan Family has returned from the Demon Realm.
“The worst-case scenario is that they actually pawned your shop,” Mr. Dante shrugged. “You hid the deed well, didn’t you?”
Virgil crossed his arms and let out a cold laugh: "You got what you deserved, Dante."
"Don't make sarcastic remarks. Without a land deed, you'll be the one in trouble." Dante walked to the side and pulled back the tightly drawn curtains. The curtains stirred something in the shadows, which fell to the ground with a soft thud.
Everyone looked down and saw that it was a stack of empty pizza boxes.
“Uh…” Dante raised an eyebrow, shrugged, and said somewhat awkwardly, “Then at least we can believe that they still come here occasionally?”
“Of course, I was only here for a few days last time,” Virgil said.
"Did the two aunties go to do some commissioned work?" Nero guessed.
“It seems possible.” Mr. Dante looked at the owner of the firm: “Perhaps you could call Morrison and ask?”
"That's what you'll be busy with."
Virgil said, walking straight into the depths of the office: "Nero, could you lend me a hand?"
"Good~"
Nero followed her. Mr. Nero shrugged behind her: "Okay, none of my business."
After defeating Mondes, everyone involved in the battle seriously discussed the aftermath, and the unanimous conclusion was to bring everyone, including Dante's DMC office, to the office. This led to the current gathering of heroes.
Discussions need a place, that's normal; but gathering in this world needs a reason. On one hand, the infinitely interconnected Demon Realm makes it difficult to find a way back, and the only one capable of accurately returning to a specific human realm is Virgil, who brought some items from the Garden of Shadows; on the other hand…
“Hmm, this place is nice.” Virgil looked around and nodded.
"Are you sure this is the place?" Nero asked, tilting his head. "If we go back to Fortuna, it shouldn't be difficult to find a good spot in the Castle of Destiny."
"This is it."
Virgil replied, "I don't want to cause any trouble over there either."
This is another reason. Virgil needs a place to connect with the Little Garden, and incidentally, it can also serve as a shortcut between the Little Garden and this world later. After defeating Mondes, the banner that once belonged to the [666 Beasts] has appeared in Nero's Gift Card. Although this community alliance has been effectively dissolved, it can still play a certain role in the hands of the Spartan bloodline.
"Consider this compensation for not having prepared a gift beforehand," Virgil said. "The power to decide how the new community should be formed and named is entirely yours."
"Are you sure you want me to do it?" Nero thought for a moment, then grinned and leaned closer to Virgil. "Then I'll name it 'Devil May Cry'?"
Virgil stopped what he was doing. He slowly looked up, saw Nero smiling broadly at him, and mechanically asked, "Are you... sure?"
Why did you choose a name given by Dante? Virgil clearly wanted to ask that.
"There are seven of us here now, and even excluding those who could come up with this name, that makes up a full half of us. And..."
"and?"
"And Uncle Dante authorized me to use this sign a long time ago, but I've never used it even once."
Nero answered confidently.
Virgil let out a sigh of relief and said with a hint of helplessness, "Fine, whatever you like."
The meaning of this statement is quite clear: he personally does not like it.
He certainly didn't like it that much. If Virgil had to choose, he might have preferred the former "Beast of 666"—because that name was more strongly associated with Nero.
If the newly formed community were to actually be called "Devil May Cry," Virgil would feel as if Dante had taken advantage of him.
However, his word was not enough. Since he had entrusted the naming rights to Nero, he had no choice but to keep his promise.
“Nero,” Virgil said in a low voice as he set up the device to connect to the Little Garden, “Tell me the truth, do you really hate me?”
"Nope."
"That……"
“The Virgil of the past and the current Father are two completely different people in my eyes,” Nero replied. She twirled a strand of hair behind her ear with her finger and chuckled, “Because I’ve never really seen Virgil before he split into ‘V’ and ‘Eurison’.”
This statement seems to contain some sophistry, or perhaps it could be described as a kind of "flexible division." A glass of water was poured into two different small glasses, then someone added a drop of paint to each of the two small glasses, and then poured the water back into the original large glass.
So, is this glass of water the same as the one before?
Nero chose to disagree. She had always disliked the "Virgil" in the story, or rather, the one before she met him—though saying she hated him might be an exaggeration; more accurately, she "had a liking for him but didn't like him."
Even now, that remains true. Ultimately, Virgil hasn't done much that's likable; the only reason he's not entirely disliked is because of his handsome face. However, after acquiring the role of "Father"... or rather, his "identity," Nero finds him somewhat more acceptable.
So she decided to consider the two separately. Virgil had done many wrong things in the past, and she probably still disliked him somewhat. But considering he was now "Father," Nero could temporarily let it go.
“…So that’s what you meant before.” Virgil sighed, rubbing his forehead.
"Yes, so we still have to work hard, Dad."
Nero encouraged him. This old man, Deng, still had a long way to go to change her opinion of "Virgil."
While things were bustling around here, the sound of sweeping could be heard again at the entrance of Devil May Cry's office.
