Warhammer 40K in a box

Chapter 465 Discharge

Chapter 465 Discharge
Having finished dealing with the mutants, Chen Xi was finally able to extricate himself and return to the familiar 3K era.

Standing still, he stretched and loosened his muscles, feeling increasingly disheartened: ever since receiving that box from the Emperor, his life had completely gone off track.

Imagine, he was originally just an ordinary 3K-era office worker. How did he manage to transform into the governor of a sub-sector in the 40K era, able to decide the life and death of trillions of lives with a single word?
However, he was forced into this job and has been doing it for over a decade, and now he's gradually becoming quite adept at it.

Although he adjusted the time flow between the two worlds, 40k's ten years would be more than half a year in the 3K era.

The past six months have made Chen Xi feel that he has undergone a tremendous transformation.

From an ordinary person to a ruler who controls the fate of trillions of lives, no matter how vast the differences between the two worlds may be, the air of a superior who has long held a position of power and whose words carry the weight of authority has quietly settled within him.

In addition, he exchanged for the power of a psionicist during the 3K era. With the two combined, Chen Xi's eyes now indeed exude a chilling aura that can make people tremble—a mark of iron and blood forged in the ten-year Rostov Expedition amidst mountains of corpses and seas of blood.

In the peaceful 3K era, apart from those old heroes who fought on the battlefield, how many people have truly experienced such a baptism of blood and fire?
The difference is self-evident.

Of course, to avoid unnecessary trouble, Chen Xi always tried his best to restrain this momentum during the 3K era.

He took a deep breath, just as he had done when confronting a warp storm in the Warhammer world, slowly calming and compressing the invisible pressure and iron-blooded aura, hiding it beneath a gentle and calm exterior.

He even cast a weak psionic spell, like sheathing an overly sharp blade and covering it with a thin veil, blurring the overly strong first impression others had of him.

Therefore, although he still looks tall, confident, and has an extraordinary demeanor, he at least doesn't make ordinary people feel instinctively palpitations or discomfort.

Especially considering that he was going to pick up Li Jingyi from the hospital tomorrow, he couldn't show up with a murderous aura, as that would be too abrupt for the beautiful lady.

Although the two did not explicitly define their relationship, their walks in the Hainan rainforest, their conversations by the waterfall, the diving accident, and their care for each other in the hospital ward had already planted a hazy affection in their hearts.

Chen Xi did not want to leave her with any bad impression that was threatening or cold.

He wanted her to see the Chen Xi who would quietly listen to her sing and play music by the sea, clumsily follow her in the rainforest, and be completely flustered for her safety.

The next day, at the sanatorium.

Chen Xi, holding a bouquet of elegant lilies, appeared right on time at the door of Li Jingyi's ward.

The door was open, and she had changed out of her hospital gown and was wearing a comfortable off-white cotton-linen long dress and a light-colored cardigan. She was bending over to tidy up her personal belongings on the bedside table.

Sunlight streamed through the window, casting a soft glow on her. Her complexion looked much better than before, though her movements still carried a slight caution befitting someone recovering from a serious illness.

"Jingyi." Chen Xi gently knocked on the door frame, a gentle smile on his face. His deliberately restrained demeanor made him look like a considerate older brother next door.

Li Jingyi looked up when she heard the voice, and when she saw it was him, a bright smile immediately bloomed on her face, as if dispelling the last trace of gloom in the ward.

"You're here!" Her voice was light and cheerful. "I've almost finished getting ready, I've been waiting for you."

"How are you feeling? What did the doctor say?" Chen Xi walked into the ward and handed her the bouquet of flowers.

"Much better!" Li Jingyi took the flowers, lowered her head to smell them, and smiled. "The doctor said the recovery is better than expected, and the signs of nerve damage have basically stabilized. The rest is just a matter of continuing rehabilitation and maintenance. Thanks to the rejuvenation therapy here, the effect is truly amazing."

As she spoke, she glanced at Chen Xi gratefully.

"That's good." Chen Xi breathed a sigh of relief, genuinely happy for her recovery. "Let me help you with your luggage." "Okay, thank you." Li Jingyi didn't refuse, pointing to a small suitcase and a canvas bag filled with books and miscellaneous items beside the bed.

Chen Xi easily picked up her suitcase and then naturally bent down to grab the canvas bag placed at the foot of the bed.

Just as he approached and bent down, Li Jingyi, who was tidying up the bouquet wrapping paper in her hands, paused almost imperceptibly.

She felt the air around her seem to freeze for a moment, and an indescribable, heavy aura swept over her skin, making the hairs on the back of her neck stand up slightly, as if some enormous creature had silently approached and then instantly retracted its claws.

The sensation was so fleeting that she thought it was her imagination.

She subconsciously looked up at Chen Xi, who was focused on picking up his canvas bag. His profile was gentle, and his expression was normal.

The strange feeling from just a moment ago vanished without a trace. Li Jingyi frowned slightly, a hint of doubt flashing through her mind.

As a psychologist, she is extremely sensitive to people's aura and body language.

That feeling just now... was completely different from the gentle feeling he usually gave off. It was closer to that time in the open sea in Hainan, when he unintentionally revealed that inhuman sense of oppression when he carried her out of the water.
She recalled the "rare celestial phenomenon" captured by satellite, and also the fleeting, calm and sharp look in his eyes when he was relaxed, a look that seemed to come from countless battles.

But she didn't say anything. She just quickly lowered her eyes, her fingers unconsciously tightening the edge of the wrapping paper to suppress that trace of doubt, and put on a smile again: "Okay, let's go?"

In the car.

Chen Xi drove the vehicle smoothly away from the sanatorium area and merged into the city traffic.

"What are your plans next?" Chen Xi asked. "Are you going back to Hainan? Or..."

Li Jingyi turned her head to look at him, a sly smile on her face that said, "You guessed right." "Neither. Actually, I have some good news to tell you."

"Oh?" Chen Xi raised an eyebrow, showing curiosity.

“Because this accidental recovery requires a period of observation and follow-up rehabilitation, plus the annual leave I had accumulated before,” Li Jingyi’s voice carried a hint of anticipation and ease, “I applied to the hospital for a job transfer, and they agreed!”

For the next period of time, I will be working part-time at a partner psychological clinic here, and I will also be doing some online consultations. In other words…”

She paused, then smiled even more broadly: "I'll be settling down in this city!"

This news surprised Chen Xi, and then an indescribable joy welled up in her heart.

"Really? That's wonderful!" His tone was filled with genuine joy. "Welcome to my turf. If you need any help, like finding a place to live, just let me know."

"Okay, thanks in advance! But I've already made progress on finding a place to live. A college classmate happens to have a small apartment that he wants to rent out for a short period of time. It's not far from that partner clinic, and the environment is quite nice. I'll go take a look tomorrow afternoon." Li Jingyi seemed very independent.

“Well… to celebrate your discharge from the hospital and to celebrate becoming a new citizen,” Chen Xi turned to look at her while waiting at a red light, his eyes gentle and inviting, “would you do me the honor of having lunch together? I know a very nice private restaurant; the environment is quiet, and the food is very healthy, which should suit your current situation.”

Li Jingyi readily agreed: "Great! It's a perfect time to celebrate my regained freedom, and also to thank you, my 'savior,' for taking care of me all this time." She winked playfully.
