Chapter 338 Chen Xi's Parents
Chapter 338 Chen Xi's Parents
The changing international landscape had little to do with Chen Xi.
Although the source of all this was just a few "garbage bags" he casually threw away—the core formula of the rejuvenating potion, the ecological cycle system of the hydroponic farm, and even the military's latest laser tanks and walking mechs, all originated from the 40k black technology he brought back.
Ultimately, however, he is merely a "technology provider." How these technologies are applied and promoted, and how to respond to international upheavals, are issues that high-level decision-makers need to weigh.
Since they have made their choice, they must naturally bear the corresponding consequences.
Chen Xi took it all in stride.
His experience as governor in the 40k universe taught him a valuable lesson: if you're not in a position of authority, don't meddle in its affairs.
The person who is responsible for a task should handle it.
Unless there is a clear hierarchical relationship, the outcome, whether good or bad, is irrelevant to you.
As for "his mistake will affect you"? That's a question to consider afterward.
Any overstepping of boundaries is superfluous before things are messed up.
Moreover, in the 40k world, he was, after all, the governor of the sub-sector, the commander-in-chief of the expeditionary force, and the chief inquisitor of the anti-foreign order. If he really wanted to intervene in any affairs, he would at least have a legitimate reason to do so.
But in this era?
Although he has amassed some wealth and influence in certain areas, it's not his place to get involved in those kinds of matters yet.
Instead of worrying about these things, we should first arrange for our parents to receive the rejuvenation surgery.
Chen Xi picked up her phone and dialed her father's number: "Dad, are you and Mom available lately? I've contacted a top medical center that can do a comprehensive anti-aging health assessment."
On the other end of the phone, the father's voice was hesitant: "Anti-aging checkup? Hospitals still offer that kind of service?"
"Yes, that latest anti-aging technology that was recently reported on TV... I have a friend who participated in the research project and managed to get two appointments for it." Chen Xi's tone was light, as if she were discussing a routine check-up: "I've already made the appointments; you two can just go when you have time."
The father was silent for a moment, but finally replied, "Okay, I'll discuss it with your mother."
After hanging up the phone, Chen Xi breathed a sigh of relief.
He understood that his parents' generation inevitably harbored reservations about things like "extending lifespan".
In their view, birth, aging, illness, and death are natural laws, and forced intervention may not be a blessing.
But Chen Xi didn't care about any of that.
Since I can let them live for decades, or even centuries... why not?
He opened the safe and took out four tightly sealed vials of potion—high-grade rejuvenating serum prepared by Olivia herself, with effects far exceeding those of the ordinary version.
"Next, it all depends on the medical team's performance." Chen Xi dialed another number to confirm the relevant procedures with the other party.
-
Chen Xi's parents are typical retired state-owned enterprise employees. They worked diligently all their lives and returned to their hometown after retirement, where they lived a simple but fulfilling life.
On weekdays, the elderly couple enjoys taking walks in the neighborhood and occasionally plans to go on trips, leading a relaxed and pleasant life.
But time waits for no one, and the various health problems that gradually appeared with age reminded them that they were no longer the same as they used to be. When they received Chen Xi's call that day, their mother was in the kitchen preparing dinner, and she stopped halfway through cutting the green pepper strips on the cutting board.
"When did this child learn about these kinds of connections?" She walked into the living room, wiping her hands, her tone full of doubt.
The father took off his reading glasses and carefully wiped the lenses with the corner of his shirt: "Young people, you know, have many friends."
Despite saying that, his brows furrowed unconsciously.
The elderly couple exchanged a glance, both seeing the same worry in each other's eyes—could their son have been scammed by some pyramid scheme?
But in the end, they decided to go and see.
Firstly, I didn't want to disappoint my son, and secondly, I really missed him after not seeing him for so long.
Although Chen Xi always said on the phone that her work was going well, how could her parents really be at ease?
On the high-speed train, the father gazed at the scenery rushing past the window and suddenly said, "I wonder how Chen Xi has been lately. She always says she's doing great, but young people these days face a lot of pressure."
"Yes." The mother paused upon hearing this, "I just don't know if this medical checkup is reliable... Didn't the news say that a lot of high-tech stuff these days is a scam?"
“Just treat it as a routine check-up,” her father patted her hand, comforting her. “It’s enough that you have the intention, child.”
When the train arrived at the station, Chen Xi was already eagerly waiting at the exit.
Seeing his parents approaching with their luggage from afar, he rushed to greet them.
The father's gaze lingered on his son's face, trying to find a clue in that familiar yet unfamiliar countenance, but in the end he only asked in a deep voice, "What exactly happened with that physical examination you mentioned on the phone?"
“It’s that latest technology that was reported in the news.” Chen Xi took the luggage and led them to the parking lot with practiced ease. “I have a friend in this project team, and he got me two spots to experience it.”
"Friends?" The father suddenly stopped and asked skeptically, "When did you make friends like this? Is he reliable?"
Just as Chen Xi was about to answer, her mother tugged at her father's sleeve: "The child's intentions are good, so don't ask so many questions."
The father sighed and didn't ask any more questions, but even after getting into the car, his tense shoulders didn't relax.
As Chen Xi skillfully started the engine, he suddenly asked, "When did you buy this car? You didn't take out a loan from the bank, did you? I told you not to take out a loan."
"I recently partnered with a friend to do business and made a little money," Chen Xi replied simply, looking straight ahead and turning the steering wheel, without offering any further explanation.
This obviously didn't reassure her parents. Chen Xi's mother quickly pressed, "What kind of business are you in? Don't get scammed! You've never run a business before, how could you have this kind of experience!"
"Mom, don't worry. My partner works for a government agency. This is a nationally supported science and technology project in the agricultural sector, specifically ecological agriculture. The factory has already been built, so everything is fine." Chen Xi responded to her parents' concerns while trying to dispel their doubts. "Besides, I don't participate in the management; I just receive a fixed share of the profits. If the project loses money, I won't suffer any losses."
"This medical check-up was arranged through a friend I know in business, so you two don't need to worry."
Chen Xi's explanation did not dispel his parents' doubts, but the elderly couple wisely did not continue to ask questions. Instead, they decided to observe and understand the situation before making any decisions.
And so, in a slightly silent atmosphere, Chen Xi drove back to her new home, which surprised her parents for quite a while.
