Chapter 413: Door Call

Chapter 413: Door Call
Two days later, the weather was fine, and the sun shone brightly in the sky, drying out the last cloud nearby.

In a corner of Lianxiang City, near the edge of a grove of trees, a young woman in tattered clothes, disheveled and filthy, limped toward a wooden building not far away.

The wooden building was very tall, and you couldn't tell how many floors it had from the outside. It stood at the other end of the woods, backed by a towering rocky cliff, dark and bare, with not a blade of grass growing on it.

The young woman looked pained, limping along on one leg, moving with difficulty. She got tired after just a few steps, as if her strength had been completely exhausted, and she could only force herself to keep going.

And so, she struggled to reach the wooden building, gritted her teeth, and reached out to knock on the two tall and thick black lacquered doors.

After a while, the door creaked open a crack, and a doorman in his forties poked his head out with a puzzled look. He saw a young woman in tattered clothes and with unkempt hair standing outside.

"Go away! Don't knock on the door if you're a beggar!" He glanced at the other person's clothes briefly, then tried to close the door again with some disdain, rudely telling him to get rid of the person.

"Please! Don't close the door! Please, save my sister!" Upon seeing this, the woman rushed forward without hesitation, blocking the door and door frame, seemingly unconcerned even if she were to be crushed to death in the door crack by the doorman. "My sister has fainted, she's in that grove of trees over there!"
I beg you, please have mercy! Give me a bowl of water, a steamed bun or a flatbread, anything will do! Please!

My sister and I have been starving for days. I can still hold on, but my sister has fainted from hunger. She just can't take it anymore. If she doesn't eat soon, I'm afraid she'll die...

Please, please help me! Give me some food, give me a bowl of water!

The woman knelt on the ground, head tilted back, hands clasped together in a prayerful gesture. Her large eyes looked exceptionally clear against her dirty face, glistening with tears, which made the doorman pause in his act of closing the door.

Although her hair was disheveled, her clothes were tattered and dirty, and her cloth shoes even had holes, the woman's eyes were so captivating that they evoked pity in one's heart.

The gatekeeper hesitated for a moment, then sighed: "I'm just a gatekeeper; I can't make decisions here."

"Then you wait here at the door for a while while I go ask the person in charge here."

"Thank you! Thank you! You're such a kind person, brother!" Upon hearing this, the woman hurriedly got up and bowed repeatedly to the gatekeeper.

The doorman quickly waved his hand, signaling her to save her energy, then closed the door and ran to find the person in charge.

After the door closed again, the woman outside breathed a sigh of relief and slowly sat down on the ground by the door.

This woman was none other than Zhu Yu. In order to look more realistic, she went without food for two whole days. The day before, she barely drank any water, which made her look much more haggard in a short period of time. Due to dehydration, she looked extremely thin, and her cheeks even looked slightly sunken.

The "sister" who had "fainted" in the woods was, of course, Yan Daoxin.

Yan Daoxin initially disagreed with the current plan. He advocated that Zhu Yu feign unconsciousness in the woods while he went to the small mountain tower to knock on the door for help, believing this to be a safer approach. "If anything goes wrong, at least I can handle it. I can't guarantee anything else, but I'm more than capable of escaping unscathed," he said to Zhu Yu. "What about you? Even if you have the ability to make the dead talk, you might not be able to deal with a living person full of bad intentions!"

"Lu Qing was extremely unwilling to do this in the first place. If anything really goes wrong, he'll skin me alive!"

“No,” Zhu Yu shook his head firmly. “I can listen to you on other things, but this is absolutely not allowed.”

Even if you try to imitate a woman's voice, can you really make it sound exactly like a real woman's?

Yan Daoxin opened his mouth, squinted his eyes to find the right feeling, tried to strain his voice, but it didn't seem quite right. He tightened his throat and tried to say in a high-pitched voice, "Please, elder brother, have mercy..."

He had barely uttered those words when he immediately shut his mouth and shuddered violently.

"Do you really think they'll open the door if you ask for help in that voice?" Zhu Yu looked at Yan Daoxin with some helplessness. Yan Daoxin's shout just now had given her goosebumps.

Yan Daoxin was speechless. He had thought he could pretend to be a woman by using a high-pitched voice, since Zhu Yu usually lowered his voice to pretend to be a man.

But after trying it himself, he realized a problem: Zhu Yu could lower her voice to pretend to be a man because she herself was pretty and not very muscular. When she dressed up as a man, she looked like a young man, so it was not surprising that her voice was not deep enough.

But no matter how hard I tried to mimic my voice, I couldn't produce a truly feminine tone; it sounded incredibly awkward.

So Zhu Yu is right. If you go to the door for help yourself, the other person might not even know how to open it.

"What should we do?" Yan Daoxin realized that she had been too confident before and never thought that her voice would be a problem. Now she was a little unsure. "Even if you go to knock on the door, do you think my voice can fool you?"

"I've already thought about this. I'll just say you're my mute older sister. You haven't been able to speak or hear since birth, but you can read other people's lips," Zhu Yu told Yan Daoxin about her plan.

Yan Daoxin thought about it and realized that this was indeed the most reasonable solution. He had no choice but to ask Zhu Yu if he had brought the self-defense powder with him and if he had taken the antidote pills he had prepared beforehand. After confirming that there were no problems, he reluctantly pretended to be unconscious in the woods and let Zhu Yu set off alone.

Although Zhu Yu had managed to get the gatekeeper of the small building to relent, she was still uneasy. She could only quietly adjust her breathing to calm her racing heart.

After a while, she vaguely heard a sound coming from inside the door, and quickly adjusted her posture to make herself look even weaker.

Soon, the black lacquered door beside him was opened again. Zhu Yu suppressed his rapidly beating heart, pretended to be weak and closed his eyes slightly. Through the slits of his eyelids, he saw the gatekeeper standing at the door, and next to him stood an old woman who was only about chest height to Zhu Yu. The two of them were standing inside the door, looking him over.
