Chapter 13 Oath
The sun shone on his body, but Quinn only felt a chill through his bones.

He did not deceive the priest in the least; he was indeed a staunch atheist.

At least it used to be.

After traveling to Tamilan, Quinn's worldview was completely shattered. Time travel, demon king, natural disasters, system... If you mentioned any of them on Earth, he would be regarded as a madman and would be laughed at for not curing his second-year syndrome at the age of 24. Even he himself would not believe it.

But in this world, these are real, and there are even more unknown mysteries. So he has a deep respect for all the unknowns, such as -

God.

The sun, the highest-ranking god in Tamilan mythology, is revered as the supreme god of creation.

The sun in this world is by no means just an unconscious celestial body. Humans named the fifth era "the era of God's promise", which means "humans will live in the world promised by God", and this "God" refers to the sun.

Myths also exist on Earth, but the difference is that there is no devil on Earth, the eyes of the Earth’s priests do not glow, and the Earth’s sun will not “never fall.”

The God of Earth died in mythology, betrayed and crucified, while the God of this world hung high in the sky, right before his eyes.

"You hesitated."

In the sunlight, Father Maud could see more clearly.

He could "see" Quinn struggling.

".No, I just don't know how to swear."

Quinn took a step forward, took the scripture, and walked completely into the sunlight.

The wind blew open the cover of "The Gospel of Genesis," revealing the first page, which contained only two short paragraphs:
In the beginning, God looked down upon the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "Day," and the darkness he called "Night." And there was evening and there was morning—the first day.

"You have to learn everything. I won't swear I can teach you."

Father Maud said leisurely, "Ordinary oaths wouldn't have such a strong effect, but since I'm here, you don't have to worry so much."

Quinn no longer hesitated.

He called the system, and when the system page appeared before his eyes, he asked in his mind:
"System, I need future hints. How can I escape from this damned charlatan?"

This time, the system did not report any errors, but gave an immediate and decisive response:

This issue has been resolved. You no longer need to pay. The system has provided the solution: 'Rescue Chardel Branson and her escort, Knight Katrin.' You have followed the prompts. For details, please check the system log.

Quinn's mouth twitched.

He listened to the system and went to save people, which is why he was betrayed by these two ungrateful bad women.

If I hadn't gone into the city with them, I might not have been caught by the law enforcement officer, nor would I have been forced to take such a terrible oath.
Thinking of this series of chain reactions, Quinn called the Bull Demon a reward.

I'm too lazy to curse.

Forget it, just burn to death in the sun. Just think of it as cremation. Maybe you can even travel back to Earth after death.

"Put your hand on the cover of the book." Father Maude stepped aside so Quinn could face the sun. "Look up, gaze at the sun, and then I'll read a line, and you read a line."

Quinn did as he was told, as carefree as a death row inmate.

"I beg your majesty, O Sun God—bathe in the light, and receive your grace."

"I would like to call upon you, Sun God, to bathe me in light, thank you."

He was startled suddenly.

Wait, why does this prayer sound so similar to the Goblin Demon King's prayer?

The only difference is that "Lord of Doom" is replaced by "God of the Sun" and "Bath in Fire" is replaced by "Bath in Light".
He did not pause for long, and after a moment he continued reading according to the priest's words.

"I, in my own name, under the witness of Maud Frollo the Light-seeker, swear—"

The priest emphasized the pronunciation of the two "I".

"What I have confessed to Maud Frollo, and what I have experienced during these three days, is all true, without a single lie."

"I'm deeply terrified. I'm deeply terrified."

"Please bear witness to my piety—"

Finish with the last vow.

As if these few words had a strange power, or perhaps it was due to the "Gospel of Genesis" on his palm, Quinn's heart actually calmed down.

All distractions were abandoned, the brightly lit city, the evening breeze, the priest.
The only thing left in his eyes was the sun.

The sunlight shone on him, creating a faint glow.

Quinn suddenly felt someone's gaze falling on him. The gaze seemed to come from an infinite height, yet seemed to be right in front of him.

Cold, without any emotion, swept past.

The whistling of the evening breeze and the hustle and bustle of the city returned to his ears, and Quinn suddenly woke up. How long had he been distracted?
Father Maud looked at him with a complicated expression.

His face was slightly pale and he looked very tired, as if the oaths he had just made had consumed most of his energy.

Quinn waited for a long time but he didn't say anything. "Um, what should I do next?"

The priest took back the book from his hand.

".It's over."

"what do you mean?"

"You are very honest. The sun thinks there is no problem with your oath."

"Oh, really."

Quinn's reaction was flat, as it should be.

In fact, I was ecstatic inside.

That's it? That's it? That's all you've been praising about the Sun God for so long?!

You charlatan, you have a shitty talent. You even say, "The sun will define your honesty, and lies will be burned away by the light." It's so real.

But there are some magical places.

After I made this oath and was exposed to the sunlight, all the fatigue from three days of trekking through mountains and rivers disappeared, as did the soreness caused by wearing handcuffs. I felt indescribably comfortable all over.

"So can I leave now?" Quinn leaned against the balcony door. "You said you would swear and leave."

Father Maude stared at Quinn, his eyes motionless. This time his eyes were no longer aggressive, but like a chess player staring at the chessboard, slowly thinking.

A certain uneasiness always lingered in his heart.

"Humans cannot deceive God." He spoke slowly, "But God can."

"What do you mean?" Quinn couldn't help but feel helpless.

Is this charlatan in the ditch ever going to stop?
"I don't think you're lying."

"Then what are you talking about?"

"But you might not realize you're lying."

Father Maude walked to the balcony door and blocked Quinn's way with his body. "The ceremony you witnessed, something happened. It's dangerous and threatens our world. And you are the only clue. In fact, you may even be it."

"The result of the ceremony."

Quinn raised an eyebrow. "The oath proves my innocence. As a clergyman of the Church of Light, do you think your suspicions are more reliable than the sun? This is blasphemy."

"I am a priest."

Father Maude said calmly, "A prerequisite for becoming a priest is to trust your intuition. And my intuition tells me that there is something wrong with you."

"So I need to bring you back to the Theocracy. By airship, it will take about two weeks to arrive. In this land, God is still too far away from us. If we get closer, all the evil fog will be exposed."

"Can I refuse?" Quinn's face was gloomy. "This is illegal."

"Of course it's illegal, but I will take you by force."

Father Maud's eyes lit up, and the sun-like light emerged from his eyes again.

"You can't refuse. Of course, you can also kill me, as long as you have the ability. And my death will alert the Church and make you take it seriously."

"Or, if you honestly follow me back to the Church and prove your innocence, the Church will compensate you for your losses during this period, and I will resign from my position as a priest and bear the consequences for my mistakes."

Quinn sighed and cursed the religious devil inwardly.

He finally gained a profound understanding of the religions of this world.

The priest reached out his hand to Quinn, ready to grab him—

"Well, let's set off quickly before it gets dark."

"No, you can't take him with you."

A cold voice came from behind the door.

Father Maud turned his head away in displeasure.

I saw a group of people walking in the corridor.

The leaders included an unhappy-looking Xia Dai'er, a man who looked 70% like Xia Dai'er, and a young official wearing a black cashmere windbreaker.

All the consuls along the way saluted the young official.

The shiny leather shoes stepped on the ground, and the heels made a crisp sound. He walked through the crowd and came closer, very close.

"You can't take anyone with you. As the Commissioner of Grindelwald's Arcane Academy, I declare that you have violated the "Prohibition of Dogs from the Church of Light" decree issued by the academy. I will now take the following action against you—"

He was almost face to face with Father Maud, and was completely unaffected by Father Maud's bright and piercing eyes, grinning sarcastically and frivolously:

"Get out of here."
