Chapter 5: Do Good Things Everyday

Chaochao chatted with the system for a while and then couldn't help falling asleep.

She was really tired. She hadn't eaten much all day, but she had been working non-stop. She was young to begin with, and how could she hold on when she was so tired?

The system didn't say much, letting her rest first. As for the things about the modern world, it would tell her bit by bit after she woke up.

Who knew that in the middle of the night, around three or four in the morning, the system suddenly called out urgently, "Chao Chao, Chao Chao, wake up quickly, your sister Lin Lan is in trouble."

Chao Chao was in a daze. If the system's voice hadn't sounded in her head, she might not have woken up at all.

Everything else was fine, but when she heard the words "Sister Lin Lan", she sat up abruptly.

The worn sheets and straw covering his body fell to the ground. The cold wind blew in, and Chao Chao shivered violently, waking up completely.

The system also couldn't bear to let her go out in the cold wind, but the situation was urgent and the opportunity was rare. If she missed it, not only would a life be lost, but Chaochao would also have to suffer for a few more days.

[Chao Chao, I remember there was a gong in the main hall of the Hu family, right?]

Chao Chao nodded dazedly, "Yeah."

Hu Lai Fu's father used to be a night watchman. In the Daqi Dynasty, night watchmen not only had the role of keeping watch at night, but also had to patrol for public security. Therefore, they were treated well and were quite popular.

The fact that Old Man Hu was able to compete showed that he had some talent. Therefore, after his death, Hu Laifu, who had always been proud of this, placed his father's meal-beating gong in the main hall as a sacrifice, and from time to time he would tell others about his father's great achievements.

Now it is convenient for the system.

[Chao Chao, listen to me. Your sister Lin Lan's newborn baby sister is being held by her grandfather and second uncle, preparing to be thrown into the back mountains. Hurry up and grab that gong. Follow the route I gave you, striking it as you go. Wake up everyone in the village, telling them someone is stealing the baby, and have them follow you to the back mountains.]

Chao Chao was shocked. Sister Lin Lan’s grandfather was going to throw her sister to the back mountain! ?
She didn't care about the cold and rushed out of the woodshed. When she was about to run out of the yard, she suddenly remembered the gong and ran back to the main room to look for it.

In a hurry, the noise was quite loud.

Even though the Hu couple were sound asleep, they were woken by the noise. Zheng frowned and called out, "Who is it?"

There was no response, but the sound of the courtyard door opening could be heard.

Zheng jumped up and said, "Oh no! There's a thief! Dad, get up quickly! There's a thief in our house."

Hu Laifu hurriedly got up, put on his clothes, picked up a stick from the corner, and rushed out. The place was deserted. He looked around and found that the money was not lost, but the conspicuous gong had also disappeared.

"You bastard, you stole my dad's gong!!"

Zheng put on her clothes and came out, and the two men hurried after her.

But after all this trouble, Chaochao had already run far away.

She followed the route given by the system and ran towards the Lin family while shouting, "There's a fire! Someone set the fire and stole the child. They ran to the back mountain. Come out quickly."

The system deliberately had Chao Chao claim arson. It was freezing cold, and if they'd simply claimed child theft, some people might have realized they hadn't lost a child and wouldn't have bothered to come out. If they'd claimed arson, they wouldn't have known whose house it was unless they'd gone out to check. Besides, the houses in this village were so close together, and if they didn't help put out the fire, who knew if it would spread to their own homes? As long as they could lure the person out of their homes, the neighbors would certainly help catch the child theft.

Sure enough, the sound of the gongs woke everyone up. When they heard that someone had set fire to the house and stolen children, they hurried to check on their own children. If they found that their children were not missing, they would leave two or three adults at home and the others would chase after them.

It was still dark and they couldn't see Chao Chao, so they could only run in the direction of the gong.

Some people heard the word "back mountain" and simply ran straight to the back mountain.

Chao Chao had already run to the Lin family's house. The Lin family members also woke up in a daze. After hearing what Chao Chao shouted, Lin Lan immediately ran to her parents' room. Then she heard a shrill howl, "Child, my child!!"

Lin Lan's face changed drastically. Her father had already rushed out. Lin Lan had no time to comfort her mother and hurriedly said, "People say the child-stealer ran to the back mountain. I'm going after him too. Mom, please wait for us at home."

After saying that, she ran out of the yard behind her father, but she almost bumped into Chaochao at the gate.

Chao Chao grabbed Lin Lan's hand and said, "Sister Lin Lan, follow me. I know where it is."

There are three roads leading to the back mountain. They have no direction and may not be able to block people. Fortunately, Grandpa Lin wants to avoid people and walks stealthily and in a roundabout way. Now there are villagers who have been woken up and are heading to the back mountain. Grandpa Lin's way is blocked, and his progress is even slower. They still have time to take a shortcut.

Lin Lan subconsciously followed Chao Chao and ran a few steps. Before she had time to think about why Chao Chao was here, she saw her let go of her hands and start hitting the gong in her hand.

Lin Lan's eyes suddenly widened, "Chao Chao, you..."

"Sister Lin Lan, don't worry, we will definitely catch up, little sister will be fine." Chao Chao had already run a long way, her breathing was a little uneven, and her legs were shaking.

She hadn't eaten and had been exercising a lot, so she was a little worried that she wouldn't be able to run.

Seeing this, Lin Lan didn't bother to ask anything and picked Chao Chao up on her back. "You show me the way, and I'll carry you."

She was fifteen years old, worked hard and was strong. Her mother had recently given birth to a younger sister, so her father secretly prepared special meals for her, so she ate well. So carrying the frail, seemingly weightless Chao Chao on her back was a breeze, and she could run a long distance in just a few steps.

Chao Chao didn't refuse. He continued to beat the gong while pointing the way, and explained the whole story. "The little sister was taken away by your grandfather and second uncle. Ah Shan said that they were not happy that Aunt Lin gave birth to a girl, so they wanted to take her away to the mountains and abandon her before dawn."

Lin Lan's face paled. She had no idea who Ah Shan was, or how he knew all this. Her mind was now filled with the vicious words her grandparents had said after her mother gave birth to her younger sister. She had initially assumed they were just talking, but she hadn't expected them to actually take action to kill her younger sister.

They are so heartless that they can even kill their own granddaughter.

"Once we find the child, we will separate." Lin's father's voice suddenly came from behind.

Lin Lan looked back and found that her father had followed them without her noticing.

Seeing that her father's voice was hoarse and he was obviously suppressing his emotions, Lin Lan opened her mouth but said nothing.

The father and daughter ran silently towards the foot of the mountain in the direction Chao Chao pointed. Gradually, more villagers followed the sound of the gong and came behind them.
