Chapter 207 Am I really that unreliable?
"Come visit me on your way back. I've prepared some things for you," Mo Qilan said humbly.
Mo Ziyuan looked at him in surprise for a moment before nodding in agreement, "I understand. If there's nothing else, I'll go find Xin'er."
"Xin'er? The girl His Majesty betrothed to you?" Mo Qilan had heard his son mention this name more than once, and he still wanted to know more about his future daughter-in-law, whom he was certain to marry.
He had considered investigating Lin Xin privately, but the Qi family incident happened before he could, so he became hesitant to investigate. His son already had a strained relationship with him, and if he found out that he was investigating someone in secret, it would probably cause an even bigger conflict.
"Yes." Mo Ziyuan's eyes immediately filled with vigilance. "What does the Duke want to ask?"
Mo Qilan felt a pang of sadness. He hadn't paid attention before, but now he realized that his son was wary of him from head to toe. He forced himself to suppress his bitter emotions and said calmly, "Father just wants to know what kind of child he is."
Mo Ziyuan narrowed his eyes. "When you married Qi Shi back then, you didn't let me know what kind of person she was. Now, you don't need to know anything about my person either. Just know that she is the only woman I have ever chosen in this life. Remember not to do anything else."
After saying that, Mo Ziyuan gave Mo Qilan a warning glare, then turned around, mounted his horse, spurred it on, and galloped away.
Mo Qilan stared at his retreating figure for a long time before shaking her head in frustration and dragging her heavy legs onto the carriage.
"Weren't we going shopping tomorrow? Why are you here now?" Lin Xin asked in surprise, looking at the travel-worn Mo Ziyuan.
Mo Ziyuan shook his head, raised his hand and pulled Lin Xin into his arms, resting his chin on the top of her head. Only when he smelled her fragrance did he feel at peace.
Lin Xin was held in his arms, her nose filled with the smell of dust and sweat, which was a bit pungent, but she endured it without saying anything. She raised her hand to wrap around his lean waist and quietly leaned against him.
After hugging for a while, Mo Ziyuan realized that he had come directly from the camp in the outskirts of the capital and had been training on the training ground for most of the day. He couldn't possibly smell good, so he quickly let go of her and asked with a flushed face, "Did my smell bother you?"
Lin Xin shook her head. How could she be bothered by the stench? During the apocalypse, the air was filled with the smell of decay, and she still survived for several years.
However, it's best to be clean and tidy rather than sloppy.
The servants had been quick to prepare a bathtub and hot water as soon as Mo Ziyuan entered the room. He happily took a hot bath and felt much more relaxed. He then had dinner with Lin Xin, made an appointment for their departure the next day, and reluctantly left.
"Are you planning to stay in the Western Frontier forever? Don't you plan to come back?" Lin Xin asked, dumbfounded, looking at the purchase list that Mo Ziyuan had stayed up all night to compile.
"No!" Mo Ziyuan knew he had written too much, but the Western Frontier was truly harsh, and he didn't want Lin Xin to live the same life as the soldiers after she went there with him.
"Then why did you buy so many? This is enough for one person to use for eight or ten years!"
“Isn’t it said that a poor family should be well-prepared for a good journey? If we prepare more thoroughly, our quality of life will be slightly better over there, Xin’er,” Mo Ziyuan put down the list, looked earnestly into Lin Xin’s eyes, and said, “I don’t want you to suffer with me, but I also don’t want to be separated from you, so…”
"Okay, okay, I'll buy them all. I can carry them all anyway, so I'll buy more." Lin Xin couldn't stand Mo Ziyuan looking at her like that with the eyes of a big dog, and she surrendered without any backbone.
“Yes, you can take any more anyway, so let’s bring some more things,” Mo Ziyuan’s eyes lit up, and he simply pulled Lin Xin to the study, picked up a pen and racked his brains to add a few more entries to the already long list. Lin Xin looked up at the sky speechlessly.
Fine, she's the one who benefits anyway, so let her buy it!
The two had been running around all day, and it wasn't until there was almost no room left to step in Lin Xin's space that they finally finished.
Exhausted, Lin Xin returned home and threw herself onto the soft couch without saying a word. She never expected that Mo Ziyuan, a grown man, could shop so much; she, a woman, was ashamed of herself.
"Sister, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Tomorrow, Lin Xin will be leaving with the army, and Cui Shi brought Lin Nan to give her a farewell party and present her with his own gift.
"I don't need this much! I could eat all of this as food." Looking at the half-cartload of bags and bottles piled up in front of her, Lin Xin felt dizzy.
“These aren’t for you,” Cui Shi said, stroking his beard as he stood beside her, pointing smugly to a large pile of neatly stacked brick-shaped paper packets. “These are potent sleeping pills. If you encounter a particularly large number of enemies, just throw them at them. This pack can definitely take down a team of three to five hundred people.”
"Really?" Lin Xin's eyes lit up. Although she wasn't afraid of fighting, who would want to put in extra effort if they could save themselves trouble?
“Of course, this is a recipe that Nan Nan and I found in ancient books and improved upon,” Cui Shi said, glaring at Lin Xin’s doubts about the efficacy of the medicine.
"That's good. I'll give you credit for that later."
"You're kidding me!" Cui Shi was about to leave, but then he came back and worriedly reminded Lin Xin, "When you administer the medicine, you have to keep an eye on the wind direction. Don't let it knock out your own people instead of the enemy. That would be a real mess."
"Am I such an unreliable person?" Lin Xin rolled her eyes.
Cui Shi didn't say anything, but stared at her with a "I think so" look, making Lin Xin's hands itch.
"Sis, sis, come here quickly, I have something good for you." Lin Nan's arrival broke the silence between the two of them.
"What good stuff is it?" Lin Xin glanced at Cui Shi with a haughty look, then turned around, squatted down, and asked Lin Nan.
"This." Lin Nan brought her small hands, which had been behind her back, to the front and handed her a small gray silk package.
"Can I open it, sister?" Lin Xin pinched the fabric and could roughly make out the shape of a box, and she had a guess in her mind.
"Of course!" Lin Nan proudly raised her chin.
Lin Xin smiled and opened the small package. Sure enough, she saw a small, dark red wooden box containing a ginseng root that had already been processed. The rootlets were thick and intact, indicating that it was an old product.
"You little traitor who's siding with outsiders! You actually gave away Master's most precious possessions!" Cui Shi roared, his eyes practically popping out of their sockets.
"Master, don't be so stingy! My sister is going to war. What if she encounters a fatal danger? She's counting on this to save her life. As long as my sister comes back alive, you'll never be short of ginseng again!" Lin Nan blinked her big eyes and painted a rosy picture for Cui Shi.
"You might as well just drive me crazy! Humph!" Cui Shi felt that Lin Nan's words made sense, but looking at the ginseng, he felt really sorry for it, so he simply turned away and left to avoid seeing it.
