Chapter 279 The End of the Recruit Training

"Instructor, what does Platoon Leader Xu need so many medicinal herbs for?"

After Feng Yuxiu finished refining the Subduing Demons and Changing Tendons Classic, he suddenly remembered the medical manual that the old man had given him in his previous life.

"You were born with a disability, so practicing martial arts won't be of much use to you. You might as well go to the countryside and become a barefoot doctor to make a meager living."

He earned these words after kneeling on the ground for three days.

Now it seems that the old man's identity is questionable.

The potential of any single item is enormous.

Gong Jian frowned. "It's nothing rare, give it to him."

"If it's not the instructor, what does he need the medicinal herbs for? That's the key point. What do we soldiers need the medicinal herbs for?" Sergeant Lao Hei asked, looking puzzled.

Gong Jian smiled and said, "Talented people are all unconventional. This is the first time that Platoon Leader Xu has taken the initiative to speak to us, which is a good thing. Anyway, it was paid for with his allowance, so we might as well take advantage of his kindness."

"give him."

"That works."

Late at night, the new recruits were all asleep in their dormitories.

Li Erniu smacked his lips and rolled over.

He Chenguang got up, put on his slippers, and stood up, only to find that Wang Yanbing's bed was empty.

He thought for a moment, then put on his camouflage jacket and went out.

He Chenguang went to the window in the corridor, and sure enough, there were people practicing on the horizontal bar below.

He Chenguang watched silently for a while, then turned and went downstairs.

Wang Yanbing hung on the horizontal bar, finally exhausted, and fell to the ground, struggling to get up again.

"Doing it this way will cause muscle necrosis."

"What are you doing here?" Wang Yanbing didn't turn around; he knew who it was.

"Increasing the intensity is fine, but we should pay attention to scientific principles. Human beings have a limit to their endurance; if you keep going like this, you'll ruin your health."

"I know my own body!"

"Stop practicing, you're too tired. Go wash up and go to bed."

"I know it's hard for me to beat you, but I have to win!"

He Chenguang remained silent, unable to utter a word.

Wang Yanbing got up: "This is my only chance."

"How could this be the only opportunity? There's still a long time to serve in the military, two years in total!"

"This is my only chance to get into the Sharpshooter Fourth Company!"

"I may not be able to beat you."

"You lied to me!" Wang Yanbing looked at him, and He Chenguang didn't know what to say.

Wang Yanbing turned around: "Why did you lie to me? Did you pity me?"

"No, it's just that seeing you like this makes me feel bad. The Iron Fist Regiment has many companies, each with a long history and all of them are heroic companies. Isn't it all the same which one you go to?"

"But the 4th Sharpshooter Company is the best company! I must join the best company! I want to wear the uniform to see my grandma! I want to tell her that her grandson is now a soldier in the 4th Sharpshooter Company of the People's Liberation Army, a soldier in the Red Army! Do you know what she said when she passed away?"

He Chenguang silently watched him, while Wang Yanbing gazed at the night sky: "She didn't say anything, she just stared at me so intently, just staring at me..."

He Chenguang lowered his head, lost in thought.

“I know she’s disappointed in me… I really regret letting her down…” Wang Yanbing said, her voice trembling with tears.

"You will do it."

"It's too difficult... to beat you, it's too difficult..." Wang Yanbing shook his head with a wry smile.

"Thirty years east of the river, thirty years west of the river—no one can be a champion forever. Go back, go to sleep, and stop thinking about it."

No matter how mischievous Wang Yanbing was, he could never compare to He Chenguang, a sports student.

He started training tirelessly from high school, while Wang Yanbing? At most, he was just a hoodlum at the alley entrance.

He Chenguang wanted to offer some words of comfort, but suddenly his gaze became blank.

His gaze fell on the horizontal bar in the distance of the training field.

Feng Yuxiu gripped the horizontal bar with both hands, spinning like a human-shaped gyroscope.

"Is this how the platoon leader trains his platoon? They're like electric fans..."

“Wang Yanbing, I think we should continue training,” He Chenguang said blankly.

"Agreed! If the platoon leader can train like this, what are we two afraid of, like rhabdomyolysis?... Keep training!"

Their initial relaxed mood vanished completely.

Li Erniu also got up in the middle of the night, looking at his two comrades covered in sweat with some confusion.

"Comrades, why do you have to be so coy? You two are definitely good enough to join the fourth sniper company."

Wang Yanbing slumped on the sandpit, looking up at the night sky. "Erniu, how come you have such a good attitude? The assessment is coming up soon, and you can still sleep. How can you sleep at your age?"

Li Erniu chuckled, "I know my own limitations. The Sharpshooter Fourth Company is not a place for me. I've already applied to Sergeant Lao Hei to work in the mess hall."

"I just want to cook."

He Chenguang gave a thumbs up, "High level!"

The morning sun shone on the Iron Fist Regiment's camp, and banners for the recruit company's assessment hung on the obstacle course, with the recruit company's flag fluttering in the sunlight.

He Chenguang and Wang Yanbing were preparing at the starting line, and a sly smile appeared on Wang Yanbing's lips.

He Chenguang did not smile; he kept his eyes fixed ahead.

Old Hei picked up his automatic rifle, fired a shot into the air, and the two of them charged forward like tigers emerging from the mountains...

The various assessments were conducted in turn, with the new recruits tumbling and leaping as if putting on a spectacular performance.

In the mountain off-road exercise, He Chenguang and Wang Yanbing ran in the leading group, while Li Erniu gritted his teeth and followed closely behind!
On the training field, a row of new recruits were blindfolded and assembling automatic rifles. He Chenguang and Wang Yanbing finished almost at the same time, tore off their blindfolds and shouted "Good!"

Li Erniu hurriedly finished assembling the parts, and the third person shouted "Good!"

He Chenguang and Wang Yanbing did pull-ups quickly, alternating up and down, their faces showing unwavering determination. Li Erniu and the other new recruits watched in astonishment.

In the obstacle course assessment, the two were still at the front of the line, with Li Erniu in third place...

Feng Yuxiu took the notebook and began calculating the scores.

Today is the last assessment for the recruits, and it also determines where these recruits will be assigned for the next two years.

On the firing range, the red flag was being blown around very hard by the wind.

In the distance, a row of targets had already been erected.

Old Hei measured the wind speed and frowned.

Gong Jian picked up a piece of paper, then let go, and the paper was blown away rapidly.

"It's very windy today," Old Hei said, looking at the sky.

"Yes, it's very windy. What are you trying to say?" Gong Jian asked.

"It's nothing." Old Hei walked towards the recruits. "Alright! You all saw it, it's very windy today, perfect weather for shooting practice! Of course, for you, it's not good weather for the assessment! Are you happy?"

"Yes, squad leader!" the recruits replied.

"You're lying! I know you're unhappy because the current wind speeds are having a significant impact on ballistics. Aren't you unhappy?"

"Yes, sir!" the recruits roared.

"Then why did you say you were happy just now?!" Old Hei shouted.

"We are soldiers of the Iron Fist Regiment, squad leader!" the recruits roared in response.

"Alright! Soldiers of the Iron Fist Regiment are never unhappy! The stronger the wind, the happier we are! Who's the hero, who's the good man, let's see on the training field! What's a little wind? Infantrymen running all over the mountains, what's a little sandstorm? Cheer up, let's get ready for the last test of the recruit company—a one-shot deal! First Platoon, go!"

"Yes, sir!" The squad leader turned around. "Squad one, all hands, get to the ground!"

He Chenguang, Wang Yanbing, Li Erniu, and others walked in unison to the ground line, where a row of rifles was already in place.

At the command, they quickly lay down, took their guns, and accepted the magazines handed to them by their squad leader.

Li Erniu blinked and rubbed his eyes: "How did sand get in at this time?"

He Chenguang stared ahead, his mind preoccupied. A row of targets stood in the distance, and the surrounding weeds were being blown about by the wind.

"Prepare!"

"Clang, clang—" A series of cocking sounds.

Everyone aimed and prepared.

Li Erniu blinked, finally relieved.

Wang Yanbing and He Chenguang both stared intently ahead.

All that remained in everyone's sights was the sights, the notch, and the target; their index fingers rested lightly on the trigger. "Fire!" Old Black commanded.

"Crackling sounds..." A burst of gunfire rang out.

Wang Yanbing fired each shot steadily.

With each shot, Li Erniu blinked, nervously pulling the trigger.

He Chenguang looked preoccupied...

The gunfire stopped.

He Chenguang still had one shot left to fire.

"What are you doing? Shoot!" Old Black snapped.

Wang Yanbing looked at He Chenguang.

He Chenguang stared ahead, took a deep breath, and aimed.

The gun went off, and Old Black picked up his binoculars, stunned—nine holes.

Wang Yanbing was taken aback.

Gong Jian was also surprised and came over to get the binoculars: "Let me see!" Sure enough, it was 90 rings.

"What can I say to you? Huh?! How did you only get 90 points?! How could this be your score?!" Gong Jian couldn't believe it.

"I'm sorry, instructor." He Chenguang said calmly.

Wang Yanbing looked at He Chenguang with a puzzled expression, and the two stared at each other.

He Chenguang looked calmly at other places.

The new recruits were all talking amongst themselves, looking at He Chenguang.

He Chenguang stared ahead, as if he had known all of this all along.

"How many rings did Wang Yanbing get?" Gong Jian asked.

Old Hei looked at the score sheet: "99 rings."

Gong Jian nodded: "At least one of them performed normally."

Wang Yanbing, however, was not happy and looked at He Chenguang thoughtfully.

Feng Yuxiu, however, revealed a sneer.

"Platoon Leader Xu, what are you laughing at?" Gong Jian asked, frowning.

Feng Yuxiu closed the document, saying, "Wang Yanbing recently cried to He Chenguang about his hardships, his family, and his own hard work."

Gong Jian was taken aback. "Is there anything wrong with comrades sharing their innermost thoughts?"

Feng Yuxiu said calmly, "He Chenguang is a proud man, but also a compassionate one. So he went easy on him this time, wanting to give the spot for the fourth sharpshooter company to Wang Yanbing."

Gong Jian fell silent. "I just thought of that too. How could He Chenguang possibly make a mistake in this crucial assessment? So there's only one thing he can do... let him win and give this comrade a chance to enter the Sharpshooter Fourth Company."

Feng Yuxiu gave a cold sneer, "That's Wang Yanbing's cleverness: moral blackmail."

Gong Jian's face was grim. "Platoon Leader Xu, why do you portray everything in such a dark light? Can't it just be the camaraderie between comrades?"

Feng Yuxiu stared coldly at Gong Jian, "Then what's the point of this assessment? The assessment isn't about winning or losing, so what use is this scorebook to me? It's just a piece of waste paper!"

Feng Yuxiu threw the booklet on the table.

Gong Jian fell silent.

Feng Yuxiu picked up the binoculars and carefully examined He Chenguang's target.

Suddenly he paused, took a few steps forward, and looked at it more clearly.

"Interesting. This kid's comprehension isn't bad. He actually managed to do it."

However, he's not the type to stand up for others.

On the parade ground, military flags fluttered in the air, and new recruits, dressed in their regular uniforms and with their belts fastened, stood in neat rows.

Gong Jian faced the military flag, raised his right fist, and declared: "I am a soldier of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, I swear!"

"I am a soldier of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, I swear!" the new recruits roared.

"Obey the leadership of the Communist Party of China, serve the people wholeheartedly, obey orders, strictly abide by discipline, be brave and tenacious, fear no sacrifice, hone your skills in killing the enemy, be ready to fight at any time, never betray the army, and vow to defend the motherland to the death!"

He Chenguang, standing in the queue, seemed preoccupied.

Military flags fluttered in the wind.

Commander Kang stood on the platform, gazing at the new recruits below.

Gong Jian ran forward, saluted, and said, "Report! Regimental Commander, the Iron Fist Regiment's new recruit company has assembled. Please give your instructions!"

Commander Kang returned the salute: "At ease."

"Yes!" Gong Jian turned around. "At ease!"

They ran into the ranks.

Commander Kang gazed at the new recruits and suddenly shouted, "Hello, comrades!"

"Greetings, Commander!" The new recruits' shouts shook the earth.

Commander Kang's sharp eyes swept across the neatly arranged square formation: "Soldiers, are you ready?!"

"Be ready at any time!" the new recruits roared.

"Iron Fist Group!"

"Stand on high alert, prepare for war! Stand on high alert, prepare for war! Stand on high alert, prepare for war!"

The thunderous slogans resounded in all directions.

Commander Kang smiled as he looked at this group of new faces.

His gaze slowly swept across the room, pausing when it landed on Feng Yuxiu's face.

The platoon leader's eyes were always so cold; he could never truly fit into this melting pot of a world.

Soldiers like these... are difficult to manage.

The new recruits, dressed in their service uniforms, lined up neatly at the company gate. Old Hei held up a list: "Guo Xiaoming, 1st Company, 1st Battalion, Mechanized Infantry! Zhao Xiaoming, 1st Company, 1st Battalion, Mechanized Infantry! Wang Liang, Political Department's Audiovisual Classroom..."

Old Hei was shocked and looked up, "You must be joking with me."

The new recruit named Wang Liang was embarrassed: "Report! Squad leader, before I enlisted I worked at a TV station as a cameraman."

“You’re not a cameraman, you’re an infantryman!” Old Black’s face darkened.

"Yes, squad leader!" Wang Liang stood at attention.

"I'll tell Director Cai of the computer lab to send you to grassroots company training. Don't think you can escape, Private!"

"Yes, squad leader!" Wang Liang said, utterly miserable.

Old Hei continued reading the list: "Gao Lulin, Engineer Battalion, Camouflage Company! Do you even know anything about engineers?"

"Report!...I don't understand."

"I really don't know how they assigned them. The new recruits I'm leading should be in an infantry company!" Old Hei frowned as he looked at the list. "Wang Xiaohu, 5th Company, 2nd Battalion, Mechanized Infantry—finally, infantry! Xu Yongchang, 9th Company, 3rd Battalion, Mechanized Infantry! Zhu Hao, Farm, Logistics Section of the Regiment—do you even know how to farm?!"

"No, class monitor!" Zhu Hao replied.

"Then what are you going to do?" Old Hei asked, puzzled.

"Report! Before enlisting, I ran a pig farm at home..." Zhu Hao chuckled.

"This recruit training company is impossible to manage now, they're all doing all sorts of things! Are there even fish farmers in the future?" Old Hei shook his head, "Li Erniu, 4th Company, Sharpshooter, 2nd Battalion, Mechanized Infantry!"

"Huh?!" Li Erniu was a little confused.

"You don't want to go?"

Li Erniu quickly replied, "No, no, I want to go! But I... I'm not qualified..."

“Just go when we tell you to! Stop with the nonsense! I know about this. The kitchen is short-staffed. You have a level two chef's certificate, so go and improve our meals.”

The new recruits suppressed their laughter, while Li Erniu was stunned: "Huh? You're really going to the mess hall?"

He originally thought he could go to the cookhouse of another company, but he didn't expect to be assigned to the Sharpshooter Fourth Company.

Sergeant Lao Hei had previously said that the cooks in the Sharpshooter Fourth Company were all sharpshooters.

He isn't yet.

"Stand still, stop talking nonsense! Soldiers of the Fourth Sharpshooter Company, you need to look the part!"

"Yes!" Li Erniu was overjoyed and quickly stood at attention.

In the queue, Wang Yanbing was a little nervous, his eyes drifting towards He Chenguang.

He Chenguang kept his eyes straight ahead.

“He Chenguang—” Lao Hei paused for a moment, “6th Company, 3rd Battalion, Mechanized Infantry! Wang Yanbing, 4th Company, Sharpshooter, 2nd Battalion, Mechanized Infantry!”

The Iron Fist Regiment's recruit training program has ended.

Feng Yuxiu stood alone in the dormitory where the targets were set up, and picked up He Chenguang's target to examine it carefully.

"Two bullets hit the same hole... This kid's potential..."
