Chapter 454 The Shadow at the Beginning (Bonus Chapter for 2017...4428 Helmsman)

When a piercing warning, "Air raid! Take cover immediately!" reached his ears, a handsome young man from Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, felt as if the sky was about to fall.

Just a minute earlier, he was filled with passionate emotions.

Thinking that he could fight the Japanese devils well with the people in front of him, he felt that his journey through time would not have been in vain.

That's right! Compared to previous transmigration stories, even after Hu Biao and others gave a good explanation, it still took the novices quite a while to accept the reality that they had transmigrated.

The eight newcomers—six men and two women—all believed in the reality of their 'time travel' within the first ten minutes of arriving.

Thinking about it a little, it doesn't seem like something that's hard to understand.

Because they had just been lying on the ground, clutching their heads, watching the entire battle unfold.

In this battle, if the flashes of gunfire, the explosions of grenade launchers, and the spurts of blood on the Japanese soldiers could be explained by realistic film props and stunt performers, then...

So, the bodies were torn apart by the insane firepower of the MG34 general-purpose machine gun; and Japanese soldiers were blown into the air by grenade launchers—these were all bloody scenes.

It simply cannot be explained by film props or stunt performers.

Damn it! Stunt performers are human too. No matter how much money you offer, I doubt anyone would be willing to perform like that.
So these newbies were forced to accept the harsh reality after such a bloody and real battle shattered their last shred of illusions.

Then, the emotions of these newlyweds became complicated, filled with fear, confusion, excitement and anticipation.

Overall, though, I felt more excited and looking forward to it.

The reason for this is twofold. Firstly, the battlefield was taking place hundreds of meters away, making it difficult for them to see clearly, and thus they were not physically disturbed by the various bloody details.

On the other hand, Hu Biao and his group were too strong in combat.

They seemed to have easily wiped out a squad of Japanese soldiers in what appeared to be a casual battle.

Their effortless performance was entirely due to the exceptional individual combat skills they had developed through countless bloody battles, as well as the extremely tacit tactical coordination among their teammates.

Unfortunately, only a very small number of these novices understood this point.

Many more people naively believed that the Japanese were nothing special and that fighting them was a very easy thing.

For example, this handsome young man from Guangzhou, based on the patriotic education he received since childhood, and a deep-seated hatred for the Japanese invaders.

He was filled with excitement and anticipation, thinking that he must ask these people for a Japanese Type 96 machine gun later.

In the battles that followed, the gunfire used to mow down the Japanese soldiers was not only a testament to the Chinese blood in their veins, but also a way of not disgracing their ancestors.

Then, there was his ambitious and audacious thought.

When the Japanese planes arrived, they were immediately met with devastating attacks.

As for why he's called "handsome guy," can he really be more handsome than Hu Biao, who has a strikingly handsome face? Let's just say, this guy is alright looking, but he's still a bit lacking compared to Boss Hu…

That said! As a seasoned veteran, Uncle Bo's performance in handling unexpected situations on the battlefield was quite competent.

After hearing the AT warning, he didn't even glance at the sky to confirm, choosing instead to unconditionally trust his partner.

Meanwhile, he used the saved time to quickly glance around, trying to find a good place to take shelter from the air raid.

The reality was harsh. After a quick look around, they realized with dismay that the reed marshes, which were supposed to be excellent hiding places, were impossible for them to take cover in before the air raid.

Other natural trenches and pits are also absent nearby.

With immense regret, all he could do was shout instructions to the newcomers, who seemed terrified by the Japanese planes overhead:
"Don't just stand there. Quickly find a rock, bush, or tree to squat down and try to curl up your body."

Rocks and trees can stop bullets, bushes can reduce the chance of being spotted by Japanese pilots, and crouching down and curling up can reduce the probability of being hit by bullets.

Each of the above points can increase the chances of survival in a sudden air raid.

Therefore, in a very short time, Uncle Bo provided these eight novices with the correct guidance.

After shouting, Uncle Bo and the other veterans dropped their equipment and packs and did the same, rushing towards some natural cover nearby.

Unfortunately, after running only two steps, they saw something that almost made them vomit blood.

At Uncle Bo's roar, the novices, who had been stunned by fear, finally came to their senses. However, apart from the five people—four men and one woman—who followed Uncle Bo's instructions and found a natural cover to crouch down and curl up as much as possible, the rest...

There were also three other people, two men and one woman. Their minds were completely blank; they couldn't hear anything anymore. Only one voice echoed repeatedly in their survival instincts:

Run, run as far as you can, preferably escape back to the modern world.

Driven by such instinct, they even forgot to throw away the large and small packages they were carrying, and stumbled and ran away with them.

Among them was a handsome young man from Guangzhou.

However, he was lucky; in his panic, he managed to run past Uncle Bo.

After being knocked down by Uncle Bo with a sweeping leg kick, he was grabbed by the collar and dragged to a somewhat old willow tree where he squatted down. During the process, because this guy was tall and strong, weighing nearly 200 pounds, it took Uncle Bo a lot of effort.

The other two, a middle-aged man in his forties and a woman in her mid-twenties with a glamorous and worldly air, were far less fortunate.

Perhaps they already knew each other back in the modern world.

Now, as they fled for their lives, they instinctively started running together, heading towards the small mound they had come from, and they were quite fast.

Black Star and the others initially planned to chase after him and pin him to the ground, which would be much better than him running around like this.

As the sound of the plane's engines overhead grew clearer, they knew the attack was imminent and there was no chance left. They could only retreat back to the natural shelters they had hastily found.

And so, the handsome young man from Guangzhou saw in horror a Japanese monoplane swooping down at lightning speed.

In just a second or two, they were about to catch up with the man and woman who were frantically trying to escape.

Then the Japanese plane opened fire with its machine gun on the nose.

A barrage of bullets poured out, like a terrifying fiery serpent whipping the ground, kicking up clouds of dust and mud as it spread forward.

In the blink of an eye, the fire serpent caught up with the couple.

The woman running behind was the first to be shot, repeatedly in the head, a fatal spot; the scene was like a watermelon being smashed open, juice splattering everywhere.

The man running in front was also hit less than half a second later.

In addition to being shot in the right knee, he had one leg broken on the spot, and was also shot multiple times in the back.

The man, who lost his balance, fell to the ground on the spot, but did not die immediately; however, his pitiful cries of "Help me!" and "Save me!" reached the handsome young man's ears.

The bloody scene I had just clearly witnessed kept replaying in my mind.

All of this made him tremble all over, feeling that life was so fragile and that he himself could die in such a suffocating way at any time.

The ambition to fight the Japanese devils well, to live up to the Chinese blood in my veins, and to not bring shame to my ancestors that I had felt before was gone from my heart.

To put it bluntly, even though he is big and burly, and his height looks a bit intimidating.

But in essence, he's just a recent college graduate living in peacetime...

The plane that suddenly appeared must have been a Japanese soldier passing by on another mission; the pilot on board had simply taken off on a whim and strafed the ground with a burst of bullets.

So after gaining altitude, it didn't circle around and turn back to continue strafing, but flew straight ahead and soon became a small dot on the horizon.

This scene brought a sigh of relief to Hu Biao and the others.

But soon after, their mood couldn't help but turn sour again.

Not only did the male novice die before Xiao Cui could even try to save him, but they also lost two novice players right at the start of this time travel adventure.

In the bundles they carried, besides some emergency food, were two radios.

They were hit by several bullets strafing from the plane, and it is unknown where they were hit or whether they can be repaired.

These terrible circumstances cast a shadow over their hearts, and a sense of unease lingered in their minds...
