Chapter 164 Tanes: Kill Orc, urgently!
As it turned out, Tanes's caution was justified.
Besides the middle-aged ranger captain who betrayed Talion, he also led four other members of his ranger party to defect to Mordor along with their captain.
Tanes also asked them if they had any accomplices outside and what their plans were, and the middle-aged captain and four members, under the influence of the enchanting branches, revealed everything.
They had no other accomplices, and tonight they had planned to sneak to the city wall and open the black gate while the rangers who were off duty were resting and eating, so that the Orks who had been waiting outside would rush in.
If it weren't for the fact that all the rangers at the captain level had received mandatory orders from Talion, the walls of the Black Gate would already be teeming with the stinking bodies of the Orks.
Melina then tied up the four rangers who had just realized what she had said and whose faces had turned pale. As they looked at their fellow countrymen who were gradually showing expressions of anger, and thinking about their impending fate, cold sweat kept pouring down their foreheads.
Melina tossed the four of them next to the middle-aged captain. Tanes glanced at Talion, whose face was ashen and who was silent as the other rangers, and broke the silence in the canteen by speaking up: "You can deal with the traitors yourselves. Melina and I will go out and leave for a while."
Talion's seemingly frozen expression softened upon hearing Tanes's words, and he nodded apologetically, "I'm sorry you had to see this, Wizard."
Tanes and Melina didn't have to wait long. The canteen doors soon reopened, and the five rangers who had betrayed their comrades were beaten beyond recognition. They were dragged out from the other side like five maggots, their blood staining the ground along with their robes.
Talion wiped his blood-stained hands and came to Tanes' side.
Behind him followed several ranger captains.
After bowing respectfully to Tanes, they left, leaving the space for Tanes and Tarion to converse.
Talion let out a long sigh of relief and performed the same salute as the captains to Tanes, saying with a mixture of lingering fear and gratitude, "Thank you so much for your help this time, Lord Tanes. If it weren't for your miraculous sorcery, the Black Gate... would probably have become the Orcs' lair again by now."
In that case, his wife and son would certainly not have survived either.
At this point, Tanes didn't know how to express his gratitude to Tanes.
Tanes, however, smiled and waved his hand, patting Talion's shoulder to calm him down, saying, "Don't get agitated, Talion. Although we've found the traitor tonight, things aren't over yet."
Talion was taken aback: "Is there anything else?"
Melina leaned close behind Tanes and whispered a reminder: "Although we thwarted the traitors' plans tonight, the Orks who were summoned by the traitors to ambush us under the Black Gate may not have left yet."
Talion's body stiffened: "You two are right. I will immediately arrange for reinforcements. Those brainless Orc idiots might launch a surprise attack on the Black Gate before they even receive a signal from the traitors."
As he spoke, he was about to set off to arrange manpower.
Tanes quickly grabbed the other man's arm and said, "Wait, Talion, I want to know if you can deduce from those traitors' words which area of land outside the Black Gate the Orcs might be lying in ambush?"
Talion looked at Tanes with a puzzled expression, not understanding the meaning of his question, but still answered truthfully: "If I'm not mistaken, the relatively weak points tonight are here and here. If Oak really got the traitor's information, they are likely hiding in these two places."
He pointed to two dark directions outside the black door, which Tanes silently memorized. Then Tarion noticed Tanes beckoning Melina and preparing to leave, and was taken aback: "Tanes, where are you going?"
Tanes turned around, grinned at Talion, and replied briefly, "Kill the Orks."
Then he summoned a spirit horse whistle from the city wall, conjured Torret, helped Melina onto the saddle, and quickly disappeared, leaving Talion alone and bewildered.
Kill Oak?
Why do I feel like this wizard cares more about Oak than his own rangers?
Talion watched as Tanes rode away and disappeared into the firelight and darkness, completely baffled. It wasn't until his wife came to his senses that Talion snapped out of his daze and immediately began to arrange for more men to patrol that night.
Following the route he had noted during the day, Tanes and Melina rode Torret to the towering walls of the Black Gate. Relying on the direction Talion had pointed in their memory, they rode forward without stopping.
During this process, Tanes did not forget to change his magic professor robe, which had little physical defense, back into the White Wolf War Ghost set, which was more suitable for close combat.
Tanes was in such a hurry because he really wanted to replenish the two soul collectors he was carrying as soon as possible, so he could return to the Golden Tree and summon more people from the Borderlands.
Talion's prediction was correct. Tanes rode off in one of the directions indicated, but before he had gone more than a hundred meters, he was attacked by a sparse hail of orc arrows.
Tanes took out a brass shield from his spatial backpack, deflected the bone arrow aimed at him, and accelerated toward the direction from which the arrow had been fired.
"A bunch of good-for-nothings! Who told you to shoot arrows ahead of time?!"
An angry roar from an Orc captain was accompanied by several screams. Then, Tanes saw something flying towards him. His other hand, which had been gripping the reins tightly, immediately released it, and a broad-headed spear appeared instantly, deflecting the black shadow flying towards him.
Torret also very humanely controlled his sprinting speed in accordance with Tanes's movements when Tanes loosened his reins, so as not to let his master lose his balance on the horse.
As the shadowy figure landed, Tanes noticed that it was an Orc, its chest cavity ripped open by a broad spear, its internal organs spilling out, and it was on the verge of death.
It turned out that the Orc captain had thrown an Orc who had fired an arrow prematurely at Tanes.
The sound of arrows whistling through the air rang out again. After Tanes once more blocked the arrows with his brass shield, he called out to Melina behind him, "Melina!"
The moment Melina heard Tanes call her name, the short blade in her hand glowed with golden light, and then she flung several crescent-shaped golden sword energies toward the direction where the Orks were hiding.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Tanes switched the King's Army straight sword into a staff and cast the [Starlight] spell. The azure light dispelled the surrounding darkness and forced out the Orks hiding within.
"Ok?"
Tanes's gaze was instantly drawn to a pale-faced, bald human among the Orks, and he rode Torret directly toward this human.
