Chapter 508 Daniel's Progress
“I know, I know,” Daniel said painfully. “I’m filled with guilt after every incident. But I don’t know what else I can do. I search online for mutant support organizations, but most of them are scams or extremist groups. I can’t find anyone who can really help me.”
“Now that you’ve found it,” Lynn said, “I’ll make sure you get the help you need.”
Lynn took out his phone and dialed a special number. This was a contact he had established while dealing with the symbiote incident—a middleman connected to the mutant community.
“I need to help a young mutant,” Lynn explained briefly, “He needs to learn how to control electromagnetic abilities.”
After a few minutes of conversation, Lynn hung up the phone. "Good news. I've contacted a mutant support organization in New York that has a partnership with the Xavier's School. They're willing to assess your situation and, if it's suitable, will arrange training for you."
Hope rekindled in Daniel's eyes. "Really? They...they really want to help me?"
“Yes, but it takes time and goes through procedures,” Lynn said. “First, you need to formally cooperate with us to complete the investigation. Then we’ll arrange for you to meet with that organization. During this time, you may need to stay in a special facility to ensure public safety and begin initial skills training.”
“Special facilities?” Daniel became wary. “You mean prison?”
“It’s not a prison,” Lynn explained. “It’s more like a safe, temporary residence, equipped with devices to shield against electromagnetic fields, and supervised by professionals. You’ll have a certain degree of freedom, but you’ll need to abide by the rules.”
Will I be treated like a prisoner?
“You’ll be seen as someone who needs help,” Lynn corrected. “Daniel, I know it’s not easy, but it’s the best solution. You need a safe environment to learn self-control, and society needs protection. It’s a win-win situation.”
Daniel fell into thought again. Lynn gave him time, observing his reaction. This young man was clearly not a bad person, just an ordinary person terrified by his sudden ability. In Lynn's view, what he needed was not punishment, but understanding and help.
“What if I refuse?” Daniel asked tentatively.
“Then I’ll have to arrest you for endangering public safety,” Lynn said truthfully. “You’ll be locked up in a regular prison, without any resources to help you control your abilities. And every time your abilities flare up, it could cause chaos in the prison, making your situation even worse.”
This realistic description made Daniel realize that he didn't have many choices.
“I choose to cooperate,” he finally said. “I trust you. You are the first person who has truly tried to understand and help me.”
Lynn felt a surge of relief. This was exactly the outcome he wanted—not simply to arrest a suspect, but to truly solve the problem and help someone in need.
“Then we’ll go to the FBI field office now to formally record your statement,” Lynn stood up, “and then I’ll arrange temporary accommodation and follow-up assistance.”
"Do I need to tidy up some things?" Daniel asked, looking at his messy room.
“Take some personal belongings, a change of clothes, and your notes,” Lynn said. “Your research might help in understanding your abilities.”
While Daniel packed his things, Lynn went to the window and contacted Dr. Chen through the earpiece, "The situation is under control, and the suspect has agreed to cooperate. Prepare to take him in."
“Excellent,” Dr. Chen replied. “I’ve been monitoring the electromagnetic readings, and the situation is stable. Your handling of the situation is perfect.”
Fifteen minutes later, Daniel packed a backpack. He looked around the small apartment where he had lived for two years, a complex emotion in his eyes.
“You’ll come back,” Lynn understood his feelings. “This isn’t goodbye forever, it’s just a temporary change.”
“I hope so,” Daniel said softly.
As they left the apartment and went downstairs, some neighbors watched curiously—FBI agents taking away a young man. But Lynn made sure the whole process looked as discreet and amicable as possible, with no handcuffs, no coercion, just companionship like a friend.
At the FBI field office, Daniel was formally questioned. He described each incident in detail—the time, place, emotional state at the time, and scope of impact. Dr. Chen also participated in the questioning, raising many technical questions to help understand the nature of Daniel's abilities.
"Can you feel the electromagnetic field?" Dr. Chen asked.
“Yes,” Daniel nodded, “it’s like a kind of pressure. I can feel all the electronic devices around me; their electromagnetic fields appear to me like dots of light.”
"Can you selectively influence specific devices?"
“I’m trying, but I can’t do it yet,” Daniel admitted. “Right now, I can only affect it on a full scale, or I can’t affect it at all.”
“This can be trained,” Dr. Chen encouraged, “just like learning fine muscle control.”
The questioning lasted approximately three hours. Finally, Supervisor Jensen joined the conversation via video link.
“Mr. Parker, based on your cooperative attitude and the special circumstances, I have spoken with the prosecutor’s office,” Jason said. “We have agreed to handle this case with a lesser charge—negligent endangerment of public safety. If you continue to cooperate, receive treatment and training, the prosecutor will recommend probation and community service, rather than imprisonment.”
“Thank you,” Daniel said sincerely, “I will cooperate fully.”
“The Holt union will continue to follow up on your case,” Jason continued, “and he will make sure you get the help you need.”
After the video call ended, Lynn arranged temporary accommodation for Daniel. It was a special room located within an FBI facility, with Faraday cage structures embedded in the walls to shield electromagnetic fields and prevent Daniel's abilities from affecting external devices.
“This isn’t a prison,” Lynn explained as she led Daniel into the room. “You have a TV, books, exercise equipment, and internet access—though it’s limited. A therapist will come to help you every day, and Dr. Chen will teach you some basic motor control techniques.”
Daniel looked at the simple yet comfortable room and nodded. "Much better than I expected." "Tomorrow, a representative from the mutant support organization will come to see you," Lynn said. "They will assess your abilities and develop a training plan. If all goes well, you can begin formal training in a few weeks."
“Agent Holt,” Daniel called after Lynn as he was about to leave, “thank you. Thank you for not treating me like a monster or a criminal.”
Lynn turned to look at the young man. "You're not a monster, Daniel. You're just someone with a special ability. This ability can be a curse or a gift, depending on how you use it. I believe that with the right guidance, you will learn to control it and even use it for good."
“I hope that one day I can be like you and help others,” Daniel said.
“That’s a great goal,” Lynn smiled. “Get some rest and start a new life tomorrow.”
In his FBI field office, Sarah congratulated him over the phone, "I heard you solved the electromagnetic interference case, and in the best way possible."
“This is the result of teamwork,” Lynn said modestly, “thanks to Dr. Chen’s technical analysis, Morrison’s support, and the trust of headquarters.”
“But the most crucial thing is your empathy,” Sarah said. “Not every agent takes the time to understand a suspect and find ways to help them.”
“Because I believe that most people are good at heart,” Lynn said. “Sometimes they just need some help, some understanding.”
Five days later, in the afternoon, Lynn returned to the special training area of the FBI facility. He had been busy with follow-up work on other cases these past few days, but had kept a close eye on Daniel's progress. Dr. Chen sent him brief reports daily, all very positive—Daniel was making rapid progress, demonstrating astonishing learning ability and self-discipline.
The training room is located on the second basement level of the facility and is specifically designed to house and train individuals with special abilities. The entire room has been specially treated, with Faraday cage structures embedded in the walls, floors, and ceilings, allowing for adjustment of the electromagnetic shielding strength as needed. The room is equipped with various electronic devices—from simple radios to complex computer systems—for training and testing.
Through the observation window, Lynn saw Daniel standing in the center of the room, surrounded by about ten different electronic devices. Dr. Chan stood beside him, holding a tablet and recording data. There was also a new face—a woman in her fifties, dressed in a simple dark suit, observing from the other side. Lynn recognized her as Dr. Irene Chan, an expert sent by the mutant support organization specializing in ability training and psychological counseling.
“Focus on the radio,” Eileen’s voice came through the speaker, gentle yet authoritative, “only the radio. Feel its electromagnetic field, imagine you can see the signals it’s emitting.”
Daniel closed his eyes, his forehead slightly furrowed, showing a focused expression. A few seconds later, the radio in the room emitted a brief static noise before returning to normal. Other devices—the computer, cell phone, and television—were unaffected and continued to function normally.
“Very good,” Eileen said approvingly. “Now try the computer, just let the screen flicker briefly, don’t let the system crash.”
Daniel took a deep breath and focused. A few seconds later, the laptop screen flickered, as if due to unstable voltage, but the system continued to run without crashing or restarting.
"Perfect!" Dr. Chen excitedly recorded the data. "Precision control has reached over 95%. This rate of progress is truly astonishing."
Lynn watched this scene with genuine relief. Just five days ago, Daniel was unable to control his abilities; any emotional fluctuation would cause all electronic devices around him to malfunction. Now, he could selectively influence specific devices and even control the intensity of the influence.
The training continued for about twenty minutes. Lynn watched as Daniel affected different devices in turn, from simple on/off controls to complex data interference, from momentary effects to continuous control, performing each task admirably. Although there were occasional instabilities—such as slight electromagnetic fluctuations in nearby devices when affecting the target device—his overall performance was far beyond that of a beginner.
“Alright, that’s enough for today,” Eileen finally said. “You did a great job, Daniel. Take a break.”
Daniel opened his eyes, visibly relieved. Although the training seemed to involve just standing there and concentrating, the mental exertion was immense. Fine beads of sweat appeared on his forehead, and his face was somewhat pale, but his eyes were filled with a sense of accomplishment.
Lynn knocked on the observation window, signaling his arrival to the people in the room. Upon seeing Lynn, Dr. Chen immediately went to the control panel and activated the intercom.
“Lynn, you’ve arrived,” Dr. Chen said. “It’s a good time to see Daniel’s progress.”
“I see,” Lynn said with a smile. “Very impressive. May I come in?”
“Of course,” Eileen replied, “we were just about to talk to you about Daniel’s situation.”
Lynn entered the training room through the security door. Daniel saw him and gave him a genuine smile.
“Agent Holt,” Daniel stepped forward, clearly pleased to see Lynn, “you’ve come to watch my training?”
“Let’s check on your progress,” Lynn patted him on the shoulder in a friendly manner. “You’re doing very well. Even better than I expected.”
“It’s all thanks to Dr. Chen and Dr. Eileen,” Daniel said modestly. “They taught me a lot.”
“But progress still depends on yourself,” Eileen walked over and extended her hand to Lynn. “Agent Lynn Hall, right? I’m Eileen Chen, it’s nice to meet you. I heard about your help to Daniel.”
“I just did what I was supposed to do,” Lynn said, shaking hands. “The real credit belongs to you professionals.”
“You’re too modest,” Eileen said. “According to Daniel’s description, the situation could have been completely different if it weren’t for your calmness and empathy.”
Dr. Chen joined the conversation, excitedly displaying his data, "Lynn, you absolutely must see these numbers. Daniel's ability to control precision has improved far beyond the normal curve. Generally, this level of control requires months or even longer of training, but he only took five days."
“This is because I’ve been studying my abilities,” Daniel explained. “Although I didn’t know how to control them before, I had a basic understanding of them. Now, with the right guidance, it’s like suddenly finding the key and unlocking a door that had been locked all along.”
"This shows that you didn't give up when you encountered difficulties, but instead tried to understand and cope with them," Lynn commented. "This kind of initiative is rare."
“Why don’t we sit down and talk?” Eileen suggested, pointing to a rest area in the corner of the training room. There were a few chairs and a small table there, specifically for taking breaks between training sessions.
The four sat down in the rest area. Dr. Chen poured several glasses of water and handed them to everyone. (End of Chapter)
