Chapter 469 Five New Teammates!
“Perhaps you’re right,” Lynn said, resisting, “Perhaps I do possess some kind of power. But I would never use it to harm innocent people!”
The door was suddenly kicked open, and the metal manipulator rushed in. His hands turned metal, ready to attack Lynn.
“Derek! Help me subdue him!” Victor shouted.
Derek immediately charged at Lynn, his metal fist extremely dangerous. But just then, a new sound came from outside the room.
"FBI! Everyone, freeze!"
Marcus and Carmen stormed into the office, followed by several members of the main assault team. Seeing Lynn's predicament, they immediately opened fire.
Derek was forced to turn to dealing with the new threat, using the surrounding metal objects as weapons and defenses. But facing an onslaught from multiple FBI agents, he quickly found himself at a disadvantage.
Seeing the situation was turning against him, Victor began to move towards the secret exit at the back of the office. But Lynn followed him closely, preventing him from escaping.
“You think you’ve won?” Victor said as he backed away. “Even if you stop me today, someone else will continue this cause. Conflict between mutants and ordinary people is inevitable!”
“Perhaps,” Lynn replied, “but that’s not your decision!”
He raised the tranquilizer gun again, this time with a more steady aim. Victor tried to use mind control again, but Lynn had learned how to resist.
The tranquilizer dart struck Viktor in the chest. The powerful anesthetic took effect, and Viktor's movements became sluggish.
“That’s impossible,” Viktor said, swaying. “I’m doing this for a greater cause.”
He collapsed to the ground and lost consciousness.
"Target subdued!" Lynn reported loudly into the communicator, "Victor Sadov has been apprehended!"
The excited voice of Deputy Director Stone came from command post: "Excellent work! The main target has been identified and subdued!"
Meanwhile, Marcus and Carmen successfully subdued Derek. The other mutants, without Victor's command, showed a significant decrease in their will to resist.
"How is Sarah?" Lynn asked with concern.
“I’m fine,” Sarah’s voice came through the intercom, “I’m coming out of the ventilation system.”
A few minutes later, Sarah climbed out of the ventilation vent above the office. A look of relief crossed her face when she saw Victor subdued.
“It’s finally over,” she said.
“It’s not completely over yet,” Marcus cautioned. “We still need to gather evidence to ensure the other members of the Shadow Alliance are also apprehended.”
“Yes,” Lynn agreed, “and some of the things Victor said are quite thought-provoking.”
Over the next few hours, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies conducted a thorough search of the entire Shadow Alliance base. They uncovered a wealth of evidence, including records of human experimentation, weapons deal documents, and a vast network for monitoring superhumans.
The most shocking discovery was a secret laboratory holding more than a dozen innocent people being used as experimental subjects. Dr. Emily immediately treated them; while most of their physical injuries could be healed, their psychological trauma required a longer period of treatment.
“These people were detained for at least several months,” Emily reported. “They were forcibly injected with various experimental compounds in an attempt to artificially induce superpowers.”
"What was the result?" Deputy Director Stone asked.
“Most of the experiments failed, but two people did gain some kind of superpower,” Emily continued, “but at the cost of serious health problems.”
This discovery makes everyone realize even more the importance of stopping the Shadow Alliance. If they are allowed to continue, many more innocent people will be harmed.
While cleaning up the scene, Lynn discovered a peculiar document on Victor's desk. It was a list of people across the country suspected of having superpower potential, including their names, addresses, and speculated types of abilities.
To Lynn's shock, he saw his own name on the list.
"Mental resistance, a potential mental barrier ability," the document describes Lynn as, "suitable as a candidate for organizational commander."
“It seems Victor was right,” Sarah said, walking over and seeing the file. “You do indeed have some kind of superpower.”
“I never sensed anything unusual,” Lynn said, puzzled.
“Perhaps it’s because your ability is too natural,” Sarah analyzed. “Mental resistance may have protected you since childhood, and you’ve become accustomed to this feeling.”
“What does this mean?” Lynn asked.
“This means you are more resistant to psychological attacks, hypnosis, and even certain forms of mind control than the average person,” Sarah explained. “This is a very rare and valuable ability.”
Lynn pondered. Throughout his career, he had indeed demonstrated extraordinary composure and resilience under pressure, especially in high-pressure situations. Perhaps this wasn't solely a result of training.
“Will this change anything?” Marcus asked.
“No,” Lynn said firmly. “No matter what my abilities are, I am still an FBI agent, and my mission is to protect innocent people.”
“That’s why you’re our captain,” Carmen smiled.
By evening, the operation was essentially complete. Key members of the Shadow League had been arrested, substantial evidence had been collected, and the victims received medical treatment. This was one of the most successful counter-psychocrime operations in FBI history.
At the celebration held at the interim command post, Deputy Director Stone expressed his gratitude to all those who participated in the operation.
"This operation proves something important," he said in his speech, "ordinary people and those with superpowers can effectively cooperate to maintain social safety. This cooperative model will become an important direction for future law enforcement work."
Colonel Reynolds also praised the trainees: "The courage, skills, and teamwork you displayed exceeded our expectations. You will become pioneers in law enforcement in this new era."
During the individual awards ceremony, Lynn, Marcus, Carmen, and Sarah all received special recognition. But for Lynn, the greatest gain was not the honors, but a new understanding of herself and the world.
“What do you plan to do with your newly discovered ability?” Sarah asked Lynn privately.
“Like any other skill,” Lynn replied, “learn it, understand it, and then use it to help those in need.” “Don’t you find it troubling to discover you might have always been a superpowered person?”
“At first it was a bit,” Lynn admitted, “but then I realized it didn’t change who I am or what I believe in. I’m still Lynn Hall, still believe in justice, and still willing to fight to protect the innocent.”
Sarah nodded in agreement. "That's why Victor will never truly understand us. He believes that power determines everything, but what really matters is how that power is used."
The following morning, before returning to their respective work locations, the twelve special training agents held one last gathering.
“Although this mission is over, I have a feeling this won’t be our last time working together,” Lynn said to everyone.
“Indeed,” agreed the agent from Boston, “the world is changing and needs more teams like ours.”
“Whatever challenges we face in the future, we must remember the lessons learned from this operation,” Carmen added: “teamwork, mutual trust, and a commitment to justice.”
“And most importantly,” Marcus said, “don’t let fear prevent you from understanding and accepting different people. Superpowered individuals and ordinary people must learn to coexist.”
As she said goodbye, Sarah told Lynn, "If you need any advice on skills development, feel free to contact me."
“I will,” Lynn said gratefully, “and thank you for your support during the operation. We couldn’t have succeeded without you.”
Other superpowered allies also expressed their willingness to continue cooperating.
The following morning at nine o'clock, Lynn was waiting for his new teammates in front of the FBI precinct in Manhattan, New York. Last night, after the celebration, Deputy Director Stone officially announced an important decision: Sarah, Emily, Chen Kai, Michael, and Carlos would be formally recruited as special advisors to the FBI, to work with Lynn in forming a special team dedicated to handling cases related to superpowers.
Manhattan was vibrant in the early morning, pedestrians hurried by, and yellow taxis weaved through the streets. Lynn, dressed in his standard FBI uniform, held a cup of coffee and checked his watch occasionally. As the team leader, he was responsible for ensuring the new members could smoothly integrate into the FBI's working environment.
"Lynn!" a familiar voice called out.
Lynn turned and saw Sarah getting out of a taxi. She was wearing a dark blue business suit today, looking both professional and elegant. Compared to her image in battle, she now looked more like an ordinary woman preparing to start a new job.
"Good morning, Sarah," Lynn greeted her with a smile. "How did you sleep?"
“To be honest, I’m a little nervous,” Sarah admitted honestly. “I never imagined I’d become a government employee. I spent last night thinking about what today would be like.”
“I understand,” Lynn nodded. “The first day is always like this. But don’t worry, everyone here is easy to get along with.”
Just then, another car pulled up to the side of the road, and Dr. Emily stepped out. She carried a large medical bag on her back and had a gentle smile on her face.
“I hope I’m not late,” Emily said as she walked over. “I picked up some necessities on the way.”
“Perfectly on time,” Lynn glanced at his watch. “The others should be arriving soon too.”
Sure enough, a few minutes later, Chen Kai, Michael, and Carlos arrived almost simultaneously. Chen Kai was wearing a simple black suit, Michael wore his signature glasses, and the electronic devices on his body made him look like a tech expert, while Carlos wore casual but formal attire, his muscular physique still clearly visible beneath his clothes.
"Alright, everyone's here," Lynn said, looking around at his five new teammates. "Ready to start a new life?"
“We are ready,” Sarah answered on behalf of everyone.
Lynn led his team into the FBI building. The security personnel in the lobby nodded to them, clearly having been notified of the new members' arrival in advance.
“This is our workplace,” Lynn explained. “The Manhattan precinct handles federal cases throughout the New York area, including the newly added cases related to supernatural abilities.”
They took the elevator to the seventeenth floor, which was the office area specifically prepared for the newly established Paranormal Phenomena Investigation Department. The entire floor had recently been renovated and was equipped with modern office equipment and advanced communication systems.
“Wow,” Michael exclaimed, his eyes lighting up as he looked at the high-tech equipment, “these electronic systems are more advanced than I imagined.”
“The FBI never skimps on technology,” Lynn explained, “especially for specialized departments like ours.”
The office area is designed as an open-plan space, with several individual offices and a large conference room. Everyone has been assigned their own workspace, equipped with the latest computers and communication equipment.
“This is Sarah’s desk,” Lynn said, pointing to a desk by the window. “Given your sensory abilities, I think you might need a relatively quiet environment.”
“Thank you, that’s so thoughtful,” Sarah said gratefully.
“Emily, your work area is here,” Lynn continued, “and next to it is the medical equipment storage room. We’ve specially requested some advanced medical devices, including some experimental treatment equipment.”
Emily examined the medical equipment. "This equipment is very professional; I've never even seen some of it in the hospital."
“Michael, this tech workstation is for you,” Lynn said, pointing to an area equipped with multiple monitors and various electronic devices. “Our IT department configured these devices specifically for you.”
Michael sat down and tried out the equipment. "This configuration is fantastic. I can do all sorts of electronic analysis and system development here."
“Chen Kai, your area is here,” Lynn continued. “We’ve specially designed a layout for quick entry and exit, making it convenient for you to use your teleportation ability.”
"A very practical design," Chen Kai nodded in satisfaction.
“Carlos, this is your spot,” Lynn concluded. “We’ve set up a training area here where you can practice and test your barrier abilities.”
After arranging the work area, Lynn led everyone to the human resources department to complete the formal onboarding procedures.
“The first step is identity verification and security screening,” explained Ms. Mary Johnson from the Human Resources Department. “While you have passed the initial screening, as FBI consultants, you still need to complete some additional procedures.”
The process was smooth, but also quite detailed. Everyone needed to provide fingerprints, retinal scans, and detailed background information. For those with superpowers, there were also some special tests and records.
“This is a competency assessment form,” Mary handed a document to each person. “Please describe in detail your abilities, limitations, potential side effects, etc. This information will help us better develop task assignments and safety measures.”
Sarah filled out the form carefully. "I've never analyzed my abilities in such detail before."
“This is necessary,” Lynn explained. “Understanding each person’s abilities and strengths helps us cooperate better when carrying out missions.” (End of Chapter)
