Chapter 458 We can't give up at the last minute!

“Okay,” Lynn nodded, feeling great.

In the second match, Lynn faced off against Rex, the manipulator of electricity. This time, he employed a different strategy. He first used an EMF jammer, then quickly closed the distance, denying Rex time to accumulate energy.

Rex unleashed an electric attack, but Lynn used his kinetic absorption armor to reduce the damage and simultaneously reflected some of the electricity back with a specially designed reflector. Rex was briefly stunned by the reflected electricity, giving Lynn the opportunity to successfully strike his target.

The third match is the most challenging: a battle against the telepath Ava.

Lynn knew this was his toughest opponent, because psychological attacks are hard to defend against. But he had one advantage: in previous cases, he had faced adversaries who tried to influence his thinking.

Once the battle began, Lynn sensed that Ava was trying to read his mind. But he used a special technique: simultaneously thinking of multiple different action plans in his mind, creating a chaotic thought process.

At the same time, he activated the neural stabilizer at maximum power and then adopted a completely random movement pattern. Not based on tactical considerations, but on random numbers—he counted in his mind, determining the direction of movement based on whether the numbers were odd or even.

This strategy made it difficult for Ava to predict his actions. Although she could still sense Lynn's presence, she couldn't accurately anticipate his next move.

Lynn gradually approached Ava and finally, after a feint, successfully hit her with a stun gun.

He won all three battles, and in each one he quickly subdued his opponent within the allotted time.

“Impressive,” Colonel Reynolds commented. “Detective Hall demonstrated exceptional adaptability, tactical thinking, and combat experience.”

The other agents looked at Lynn with admiration. Marcus and Carmen were proud of his performance.

“We will now conduct team combat drills,” Colonel Reynolds announced. “Three people per team, against one superhuman.”

Without a doubt, Lynn, Marcus, and Carmen formed a team. Their opponent was a new superpowered individual—a woman capable of creating field shields.

“This is Sarah; she can create a near-invincible protective barrier,” Colonel Reynolds explained. “You’ll need teamwork to break through her defenses.”

Once the team battle began, the three immediately demonstrated excellent teamwork. Lynn was responsible for command and tactical planning, Marcus was responsible for drawing attention from the front, and Carmen was responsible for flanking maneuvers.

Sarah's force field shield is indeed very strong, capable of blocking most attacks. However, Lynn observed a weakness in the shield: it requires focused attention to maintain and cannot protect all directions simultaneously.

"Marcus, press the attack head-on! Carmen, flank to the left!" Lynn commanded. "I'll attack from the right, all three seconds later!"

The coordinated attack of the three forced Sarah to lose focus. As she tightened her frontal defense, Lynn successfully broke through the force field from the side and struck the target.

"Perfect teamwork!" Colonel Reynolds exclaimed.

After the training session, all the agents gathered in the debriefing room. Colonel Reynolds began analyzing each person's performance.

“Today’s training showed us everyone’s basic abilities and areas for improvement,” Colonel Reynolds said. “Overall, you all exceeded my expectations.”

He reviewed each agent's performance individually, pointing out their strengths and areas for improvement. His evaluation of Lynn was particularly detailed.

“Detective Hall’s performance was the best today,” Colonel Reynolds said. “He demonstrated several key strengths: first, his extensive combat experience allowed him to quickly adapt to supernatural threats; second, his excellent tactical thinking and environmental adaptability; third, his strong mental fortitude and resilience; and finally, his leadership skills in teamwork.”

"Based on today's performance, Inspector Hall is ranked first," Colonel Reynolds announced. "He will serve as the cadet captain in the upcoming training sessions, assisting in mentoring the other agents."

Upon hearing the news, everyone applauded for Lynn. Marcus and Carmen were especially happy for their friend.

“Thank you for your recognition,” Lynn said, standing up. “But I want to emphasize that fighting supernatural threats is not about individual heroism, but about teamwork. Today’s success largely stems from my previous practical experience, but the real challenge requires us all to face it together.”

“Well said,” Colonel Reynolds nodded. “This is exactly the kind of leadership quality we’re looking for.”

After training, Lynn, Marcus, and Carmen walked together to the restaurant.

“Your performance today was fantastic,” Marcus praised. “Especially that strategy against the telepaths—it was simply ingenious.”

“Yes, I never thought of using random movement to counter mind reading,” Carmen praised. “How did you come up with that idea?”

“In my cases in New York, I’ve encountered adversaries who tried to influence my thinking,” Lynn explained. “I found that keeping my mind confused and my actions random reduced their advantage.”

“It seems that practical experience is really important,” Marcus remarked. “We all need to learn from you.”

“We learn from each other,” Lynn replied. “Your strategy for dealing with the electric manipulators was brilliant, and Carmen’s adaptability impressed me as well.”

In the restaurant, the other agents also sought Lynn's advice. Lynn was happy to share, knowing that improving the overall capabilities of the team was more important than individual performance.

“The most important thing when dealing with superpowered individuals is mental preparation,” Lynn told everyone. “Don’t be intimidated by their abilities; remember they are still human, with weaknesses and limitations.”

"Equipment is important, but even more important is how to use it flexibly," he continued. "Don't rely on a single strategy; adjust your tactics according to the situation."

“Also, your environment is your friend,” Lynn added. “Learn to use the terrain, light, sound, and other factors to create an advantage.”

An agent from Phoenix asked, "What do you do when facing an enemy with unknown abilities?"

“Observation and probing,” Lynn replied. “Every ability has patterns and limitations; the key is to quickly identify these patterns. At the same time, maintain distance for an initial assessment, and then develop a targeted strategy.”

"What about teamwork?" another agent asked.

“Communication is key,” Lynn said. “Clear instructions, timely information sharing, and mutual cover. Today’s teamwork with Marcus and Carmen is a good example.”

Throughout dinner, the agents engaged in a lively discussion about their training experiences and lessons learned that day. Although they came from different places and had different backgrounds, their shared challenge of facing a supernatural threat quickly brought them together.

"What will tomorrow's training consist of?" Carmen asked.

“It should be more advanced tactical training and equipment use,” Lynn speculated. “Today is just a basic assessment; the real challenges are yet to come.”

“Regardless, the three of us will continue to work together,” Marcus said. “Today’s team performance proves that we cooperate very well.”

“Of course,” Lynn and Carmen both agreed. At 5:30 the next morning, the piercing alarm sounded again at the base, an hour and a half earlier than the day before. Lynn woke with a start, feeling some soreness from yesterday's training, but in good spirits. He quickly washed up, put on his workout gear, and headed to the assembly point.

In the hallway, he encountered Marcus, who looked equally exhausted.

“Good morning, Captain,” Marcus said, yawning. “Isn’t 5:30 too early for a meeting?”

“That’s what military training is like,” Lynn responded, “and the threats we face don’t care about time.”

When they arrived at the meeting point, they found that most of the agents were already there, but everyone looked exhausted. Carmen was doing stretching exercises and greeted them as they approached.

"Today looks like it's going to be tough," she predicted. "Yesterday's combat training was already exhausting."

When Reynolds arrived at the academy, he was accompanied by several very strong-looking instructors. They were all dressed in military training uniforms, and each of them was a muscular, serious-looking tough guy.

"Agents, yesterday's combat assessment gave us insight into your tactical capabilities," Colonel Reynolds began, "but fighting superhumans requires not only skill, but also formidable physical strength."

He pointed to the instructors around him, "Today you will undergo our specially designed physical training program. This training is specifically designed for counter-surveillance operations and will be more intense than any training you have experienced before."

An instructor who looked like a former Navy SEAL stepped forward. "I'm Instructor Smith, and I'll be in charge of today's physical training. First of all, let me state that today's training will push you to your physical limits, and possibly even beyond."

“The training is divided into six phases,” Instructor Smith continued. “Each phase simulates the physical challenges that might be encountered in real combat. You will train in groups of three, as was done yesterday, and success or failure will depend on teamwork.”

Lynn, Marcus, and Carmen exchanged glances, all ready to accept the challenge.

"Phase One: Obstacle Course Training," Instructor Smith announced. "Follow me."

They were taken to an outdoor training area at the rear of the base. A huge obstacle course had been built there, including various climbing structures, balance beams, ropes, a water pool, and artificial slopes.

“This obstacle course simulates the complex terrain one might encounter while chasing or escaping a superhuman,” Instructor Smith explained. “Each team must complete the course within forty-five minutes, and all three members must reach the finish line simultaneously.”

Lynn observed the layout of the training ground. It was indeed much more complex than ordinary obstacle courses; some obstacles even required three people to work together to get through.

"Begin!" Instructor Smith gave the order.

The first obstacle is a four-meter-high climbing wall topped with barbed wire. It's difficult for a single person to climb over and requires teamwork.

“Marcus, you’re the strongest, you go first,” Lynn quickly assigned tasks. “Carmen, you’re the lightest, we’ll lift you up, then you and Marcus will pull me up.”

The three worked together very well. Marcus climbed halfway up first, then Lynn and Carmen lifted her up so Marcus could pull her up. Then the two of them worked together to pull Lynn over the wall.

The second obstacle was a combination of a pool and a mud pit. They had to swim across a ten-meter-long pool of icy water and then crawl thirty meters through the mud.

"The water temperature is only about ten degrees Celsius," Carmen said, shivering as she entered the water.

“Hang in there, keep your temperature,” Lynn encouraged. “Get through quickly.”

The three struggled to swim across the pool, then crawled laboriously through the sticky mud. The mud clung to their bodies, adding weight and slowing their progress.

The third obstacle is rope climbing and balance training. They need to climb a 15-meter-high rope and then walk on a balance beam high in the air to the other side.

Marcus's strength advantage was evident here, as he was the first to climb to the top. However, on the balance beam, his weight became a disadvantage.

“Don’t rush, keep your balance,” Lynn instructed from below.

Carmen had the best balance and crossed the balance beam steadily. Lynn was last, but also crossed safely.

The fourth obstacle is a weighted run. Each group needs to carry an 80-kilogram dummy across a 1,000-meter mountain path.

“We’ll take turns carrying it,” Lynn instructed, “each person carrying one-third of the distance.”

This obstacle is the biggest test of team coordination and stamina distribution. Eighty kilograms is not easy for three people, especially after they have already expended a lot of energy.

Marcus took the lead, and his strength made the first 300 meters relatively easy. When it was Carmen's turn, she gritted her teeth and persevered, with Lynn and Marcus assisting her from both sides. Lynn took charge of the last 300 meters, and by then they were all panting heavily.

The fifth obstacle is a chase training exercise in a simulated urban environment. They need to navigate through a simulated city street scene, jumping over cars, crawling through windows, climbing stairs, and dodging attacks from "enemies."

This obstacle course combines parkour, climbing, and tactical movement, closely resembling a real-world scenario. The three players must provide cover for each other while rapidly navigating various urban obstacles.

"Cover the left!" Lynn commanded, as he flipped over a simulator car.

“Roger!” Marcus responded, providing cover from another angle.

Carmen used her agility to quickly climb to the second floor and observe the route from above.

The final obstacle is an endurance test: a three-kilometer mountain trail run, requiring the three participants to stay within ten meters of each other and not to separate.

By this time, everyone was exhausted. The previous five obstacles had drained their energy, but they still needed to complete the last three kilometers.

“Keep formation,” Lynn said, trying to keep her breathing steady, “we’ll stick together to the end.”

The mountain track was rugged and uneven, with steep uphill and downhill sections. Their leg muscles were already aching terribly, but none of them wanted to give up.

"I...I can't go on anymore," Carmen said, starting to feel exhausted at the second kilometer.

“Hang in there, we’re all in this together,” Marcus encouraged, though he himself was also panting heavily.

Although Lynn was also exhausted, as the team captain, he knew he had to boost morale. "One kilometer left! We've already completed two-thirds of the way. We can't give up at the last minute!" (End of Chapter)
