Chapter 446 Supernatural Phenomena
"What kind of special skill?" Lynn pressed.
“I don’t know exactly what it is,” Raymond shook his head, “but everyone else is afraid of him. Carlos said the guy isn’t normal, and sometimes he does strange things.”
Although Raymond's description was vague, Lynn realized that they might be facing an individual with special abilities or extreme danger.
"What are this person's physical characteristics?" Lynn continued to ask.
“Tall, very thin, always dressed in black,” Raymond described. “And he rarely spoke, but when he did, everyone would stop and listen.”
"Were there any other people involved in today's operation?"
“A manager will accompany him,” Raymond replied, “a middle-aged man in a suit; he’ll be responsible for communicating with that special person.”
Lynn finished the interrogation and immediately contacted Sarah. "Sarah, I need you to confirm the location of Roosevelt High School right now and find a student named Li Xiaoming."
“It’s under investigation,” Sarah responded over the radio. “I’ve located the restaurant, called ‘Home Kitchen,’ right on Roosevelt Avenue. The owner is Mr. Li, and he does indeed have a fifteen-year-old son named Li Xiaoming, who attends Roosevelt High School.”
"What time is it?" Lynn checked his watch.
“Two-thirty in the afternoon,” Sarah replied, “If Raymond is telling the truth, they will act soon.”
“I’ll be right there,” Lynn decided. “You stay near the school, but keep your distance. If this person with ‘special abilities’ is really dangerous, I don’t want civilians to get hurt.”
Lynn drove quickly to Flushing, pondering possible responses along the way. Raymond's mention of "special skills" made him uneasy; although he wasn't sure what they were, his years of law enforcement experience told him to prepare for the worst.
At 3:05 p.m., Lynn arrived near Roosevelt High School. It's a typical New York public high school, with a predominantly Asian student body, especially Chinese. School had just ended, and students were gradually leaving the school gates.
Sarah, who was observing the situation from a nearby coffee shop, reported to Lynn via radio: "Target student Li Xiaoming has just appeared and is heading towards the south gate."
Lynn saw an Asian boy with a backpack, about fifteen years old, of medium height, and looking quite ordinary. Li Xiaoming walked along the sidewalk towards the bus stop, clearly preparing to take a bus home.
“Suspicious persons have appeared,” Sarah’s voice came through the intercom. “A black sedan is parked near the bus stop, and there are two people inside.”
Lynn carefully examined the car. From the driver's seat, he could see a tall, thin man dressed in black, and in the passenger seat, a middle-aged man in a suit. This matched Raymond's description perfectly.
“They’ve started their operation,” Sarah reported.
The man in the suit got out of the car and walked towards Li Xiaoming. His movements were natural, making him look like an ordinary passerby. But Lynn noticed that the tall, thin man in black also got out of the car and followed behind at a certain distance.
Lynn quickly assessed the situation. If they waited until the two men got close to Li Xiaoming before taking action, the innocent child might be put in danger. He decided to intervene early.
“Sarah, I need to move ahead of schedule,” Lynn said over the radio. “You protect the students; I'll handle those two.”
Lynn strode toward the man in the suit and blocked his way before he could get close to Li Xiaoming.
“FBI,” Lynn showed his badge, “I need to speak with you.”
The man in the suit appeared calm. "I think you've got it wrong, Inspector. I'm just an ordinary citizen."
"Really? Then why did you approach that student?" Lynn questioned directly.
“What student? I don’t know what you’re talking about,” the man denied.
But just then, Lynn felt an unusual heat coming from behind him. He quickly turned around and saw the tall, thin man in black walking towards him, and the surrounding air began to distort, like the heat wave on a summer asphalt road.
“This is impossible,” Lynn thought to himself, but his rational training kept him alert.
The man in black stopped ten feet away from Lynn and slowly raised his right hand. Lynn saw a shocking sight: an orange-red light began to emanate from the man's palm, and the temperature in the air noticeably increased.
“Step back, Federal agent,” the man in black spoke, his voice low and cold. “This is none of your business.”
Lynn's first thought was that this might be some kind of high-tech weapon or special device, but when he saw flames actually appear in the man's hand, he realized that he was facing a threat that was completely beyond conventional understanding.
"Drop your weapons!" Lynn shouted, drawing his sidearm as he did so.
"A weapon?" the man in black sneered. "This isn't a weapon; this is talent."
As he spoke, he hurled the fireball in his hand towards Lynn. Lynn quickly dodged to the side, the fireball grazing his shoulder and striking a nearby parked car. The side of the vehicle immediately burst into flames, crackling and popping.
"Attention all units, armed attack underway!" Lynn called for backup via radio while seeking cover.
Pedestrians nearby began to panic and flee upon seeing the flames and burning cars. Li Xiaoming was also startled by the sudden chaos and stood there, at a loss for what to do.
“Sarah, protect that student immediately!” Lynn ordered.
Sarah rushed out of the coffee shop and ran quickly towards Li Xiaoming, shouting, "Kid, come with me! It's not safe here!"
Meanwhile, the man in the suit tried to escape in the chaos, but Lynn wouldn't let any of them get away.
"Stop!" Lynn fired a shot into the leg of the man in the suit.
The bullet struck its target accurately, and the man immediately fell to the ground, clutching his leg and screaming in pain. But this action enraged the man in black.
“You shouldn’t have done this,” the man in black said angrily, his hands beginning to burn. “Now I’m going to make you pay.”
He threw fireballs at Lynn with both hands simultaneously, and Lynn quickly rolled behind a car for cover. The fireballs hit the car, and the entire vehicle burst into flames.
Lynn realized that conventional law enforcement strategies might be ineffective against this supernatural threat. He needed to reassess his tactics.
"Who exactly is this person?" Lynn wondered, but now was not the time to ponder such questions.
The man in black began to slowly approach Lynn's cover position, leaving scorched marks on the ground with each step. His hands remained burning, like two living torches.
“Come out, Inspector,” the man in black said. “You can’t hide for long.”
Lynn quickly considered a solution. Bullets might be effective against this person, but the range of the fire attack was vast; he needed to find a way to both attack and protect himself.
Just then, he noticed a fire hydrant nearby. If he could break the hydrant, the water flow might be able to fight off the flames.
Lynn fired a shot at the fire hydrant, rupturing the metal pipe and sending a gush of water gushing out. He quickly moved into the water's path, using the spray as cover.
“Clever,” the man in black commented, “but this can only buy time.” He hurled a larger fireball toward the water flow, and steam immediately rose, enveloping the entire area in thick fog. Lynn used this opportunity to change position, circling around to the man in black's side.
In the thick fog, Lynn heard footsteps and the man's breathing. He held his breath and moved slowly, trying to find a favorable position to attack.
"You think the fog can protect you?" the voice in black came. "I can feel your heat."
As he spoke, he launched a series of fireballs toward Lynn's approximate location. Lynn felt the scorching heat pass by him, and one fireball almost hit him.
But Lynn also used this opportunity to pinpoint the man in black's exact location. He suddenly emerged from the fog and rushed toward his target at top speed.
The man in black hadn't anticipated such a close-quarters attack, and Lynn tackled him before he could react. The two wrestled on the ground.
The close contact made Lynn feel the abnormal heat emanating from this person's body, like hugging a furnace. But he endured the burning heat and used all his strength to suppress the other person.
"Let me go!" the man in black roared angrily, his entire body beginning to heat up.
Lynn felt his clothes begin to smoke and his skin burned. But he knew this was his only chance to subdue his opponent.
“Sarah! Come quick!” Lynn shouted.
Sarah had already brought Li Xiaoming to safety and rushed over immediately after hearing Lynn's call. When she saw Lynn wrestling with a person engulfed in flames, she could hardly believe her eyes.
"Give me the handcuffs!" Lynn shouted to Sarah, while struggling to control the man in black's hands.
Sarah quickly pulled out handcuffs, but the heat emanating from the man in black prevented her from getting close when she tried to approach.
“It’s so hot!” Sarah exclaimed.
Lynn realized he needed to find a way to lower the man's body temperature. He remembered that the fire hydrant he had just damaged was still spraying water.
“Help me drag him to the water!” Lynn said to Sarah.
The two men worked together to drag the still-struggling man in black toward a fire hydrant that was spraying water. As the large amount of water hit the man in black, it immediately generated a lot of steam and made a hissing sound.
"No!" the man in black cried out in pain as his body temperature began to drop and the flames gradually went out.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Lynn and Sarah successfully handcuffed the man in black. But even after being subdued, his body was still much hotter than a normal person's.
“What on earth is going on?” Sarah asked in shock. “How can this person control fire?”
“I don’t know either,” Lynn answered honestly, “but this isn’t the time to discuss that. We need medical support and to ensure safety on site.”
Just then, Lynn noticed that the injured man in the suit was gone. He had taken the opportunity to escape in the chaos.
“Damn it,” Lynn cursed, “that manager ran away.”
"Should we send someone to chase after them?" Sarah asked.
“It’s too late to chase now,” Lynn shook his head, “and we need to deal with this more urgent situation.”
He pointed to the man in black who was still being rinsed with water. Even under the restraint of handcuffs, the man still radiated an unusual heat, and the surrounding water seemed to be boiling.
“We need special containers to transport him,” Lynn said. “Regular police cars probably can’t withstand this temperature.”
Soon, support forces arrived at the scene. When the SWAT team members saw the burning car and the suspect still emitting steam, they all looked puzzled.
“What happened here?” Rick Sanders asked.
“It’s hard to explain,” Lynn replied, “but we’ve apprehended a suspect with special abilities. He can control fire.”
Rick frowned. "You mean these burning cars?"
“It was all his fault,” Lynn confirmed, “for launching fireballs with his bare hands.”
Although it sounds unbelievable, the evidence at the scene was obvious. Several cars were burned, there were charred footprints on the ground, and the suspect was still radiating unusual heat.
“We need to contact headquarters,” Rick said. “This situation is beyond our scope of handling.”
“Get him safely to a quarantine facility first,” Lynn instructed, “and then we’ll decide what to do next.”
Medical personnel arrived at the scene, but when they tried to check the man in black's condition, they found they could not touch him properly because the temperature was too high.
“We need special protective equipment,” a medical worker said. “This person’s temperature is at least 30 degrees Celsius higher than normal.”
"Is he still alive?" Sarah asked worriedly.
“He’s alive, but in a condition we’ve never seen before,” the medical staff replied. “His vital signs are stable, but his temperature is abnormal.”
Lynn began to ponder the deeper implications of this situation. If humans truly possessed the ability to control fire, then the entire law enforcement system might need to be reconsidered.
“Sarah, make sure Li Xiaoming gets home safely,” Lynn instructed. “Tell his parents what happened, but don’t mention the man’s special abilities. Just say we thwarted a kidnapping attempt.”
“Understood,” Sarah nodded. “What about the manager who ran away?”
“I’ll interrogate this arrested man and see what information we can get,” Lynn replied. “Perhaps he knows the identity of that manager.”
When the special transport vehicle arrived at the scene, Lynn realized that the complexity of the case far exceeded his expectations. If this criminal organization had hired people with supernatural abilities, then the level of threat they faced was completely different.
“Detective,” a technician approached, “we’ve found some strange substances at the scene.”
"What kind of substance?"
"The chemical composition of the ground changed where that person stood," the technician explained, "like the molecular structure was altered by extremely high temperatures."
These findings further confirm the supernatural phenomena Lynn witnessed. But as a rational federal agent, he needs to find a scientific explanation.
“Send all samples to the lab for detailed analysis,” Lynn instructed. “I need to know exactly what’s going on.” (End of Chapter)
