Chapter 413 Professionally trained!
“Psychic control,” Lynn immediately recognized the other person’s ability. He felt his movements become sluggish, as if moving in water. This feeling was very uncomfortable, but Lynn, with his years of training experience, tried to adapt to the change.
Taking advantage of the situation, the woman launched another attack, her fists raining down on Lynn. Although Lynn's movements were restricted, his combat experience allowed him to accurately predict the trajectory of his opponent's attacks. He used his arms to protect his vitals while simultaneously looking for an opportunity to counterattack.
After a series of attacks, the woman created a brief opening. Lynn seized the opportunity, suddenly charging forward and ramming into her with his shoulder. Although his speed was greatly reduced due to the influence of his telekinesis, the powerful impact still caught the woman off guard.
The woman was knocked back a few steps, and Lynn took the opportunity to draw his pistol and point it at the telekinetic controller. But just as he pulled the trigger, the scarred man finally made his move.
Suddenly, blue lightning crackled from the scarred man's palm, shooting towards Lynn like a bolt of lightning. Lynn dodged hastily, but the arc was too fast and grazed his left arm. The intense electric shock instantly paralyzed his entire arm, and his pistol fell to the ground.
“Electro-Manipulator,” Lynn gritted his teeth. This was one of the most dangerous mutant abilities, the ability to generate and control electric current.
The situation was extremely unfavorable for Lynn. The three mutants each possessed unique abilities, while he was just an ordinary human. However, years of combat experience told him that he absolutely could not panic in this situation.
Lynn quickly analyzed the situation. While the telekinetic abilities were powerful, they required concentration and had a limited range. The woman was fast, but not particularly strong. The scarred man's electric shocks were the most lethal, but judging from his previous attack, they required some preparation time.
Thinking this, Lynn suddenly charged towards the telekinetic controller. The opponent clearly hadn't anticipated Lynn choosing his strongest opponent as their target, and hastily increased their telekinetic output. But Lynn was prepared; he grabbed a handful of metal fragments from the ground and threw them at the telekinetic controller.
The metal fragments changed direction under the influence of telekinesis, but Lynn's real goal wasn't to attack his opponent, but to distract him. Taking advantage of the moment his opponent was dealing with the metal fragments, Lynn had already rushed in front of him.
A powerful punch struck the telekinetic controller's temple, instantly knocking him unconscious and causing him to collapse to the ground. The telekinetic field vanished, and Lynn felt his movements become free again.
"Damn it!" the scarred man roared, unleashing even stronger arcs of electricity from both hands simultaneously. But this time Lynn was prepared; he rolled to the ground, using the metal equipment in the workshop as cover. The arcs struck the metal, sending up dazzling sparks.
The woman attacked Lynn again, but this time without the restriction of the telekinetic field, Lynn's fighting abilities were fully unleashed. Every move he made was precisely calculated, allowing him to evade the woman's attacks while gradually closing the distance with the scarred man.
The woman clearly realized Lynn's intentions, and her attacks became even more frenzied. However, anger clouded her judgment, and while her attacks were numerous, they lacked structure. Lynn seized an opportunity and landed an uppercut on the woman's chin.
The woman was thrown backward and crashed into an abandoned machine with a heavy thud. She tried to get up, but was clearly seriously injured.
Now only the scarred man remained. He saw his two companions subdued, and a flash of surprise and anger crossed his eyes.
“I never expected an ordinary person to possess such fighting prowess,” the scarred man said. “Looks like we underestimated you.”
“Hand over Emily, and I might consider giving you a lighter sentence,” Lynn said as he slowly approached the other party.
The scarred man laughed, but his laughter was filled with malice. "You think you've won? Let me show you true power!"
As he spoke, blue electric currents began to crackle all over the scarred man's body. The intensity of the current grew stronger and stronger, even affecting the surrounding metal equipment. Some machines began to emit sparks and black smoke.
Lynn realized the situation was dire. If the scarred man were to unleash his full power, the entire workshop could become a giant electric grid, leaving him nowhere to escape.
But at this crucial moment, Lynn noticed a large water pipe on the ceiling of the workshop. Years of disuse had caused cracks in the pipe, which was slowly dripping water.
Lynn immediately had an idea. He grabbed a piece of metal from the ground and threw it forcefully at the crack in the water pipe. The metal piece hit the crack precisely, and the small crack instantly widened, with a large amount of water gushing out.
The scarred man, unaware of the danger, continued to build up his electricity. But when the water hit him, his expression changed instantly. Water is a good conductor of electricity, and the powerful current he had created instantly backfired, causing his whole body to convulse and him to collapse uncontrollably to the ground.
Taking advantage of the moment, Lynn rushed forward and kicked away a metal object next to the scarred man to avoid being electrocuted himself. Then he struck hard, completely incapacitating the scarred man.
The battle was over. All three mutants were subdued, and the workshop fell silent again, save for the sound of dripping water and Lynn's slightly rapid breathing.
Lynn checked his injuries. His left arm was still a little numb, but sensation was beginning to return. His ribs were a little sore, possibly from a minor bruise, but nothing serious.
He walked over to the scarred man and checked on him. Although he had been electrocuted, the scarred man was only unconscious and not in mortal danger. Lynn used the man's shoelaces to tie all three of them up, and then began searching them.
In the scarred man's pocket, Lynn found a small communication device and a piece of paper with an address written on it. The address pointed to an industrial park on the other side of the city.
“It seems this isn’t their real base,” Lynn thought.
Just then, the communication device suddenly rang. Lynn hesitated for a moment, then answered the call.
"Report the situation," came the voice of an unfamiliar man on the phone.
Lynn mimicked the scarred man's voice, replying, "Target taken."
“Very good, return to base immediately. The doctor is waiting for your report,” the other party said. “The experiment has entered a critical stage, and there can be no delays.”
“Understood,” Lynn replied, then hung up. From this conversation, Lynn gleaned several crucial pieces of information: the kidnappers had a leader known as “The Doctor,” they were conducting some kind of experiment, and the experiment had entered a critical phase. This meant Emily's situation might be more dangerous than initially thought.
Lynn immediately called FBI headquarters, requesting a support team to be dispatched to the steel mill and to bring the three mutant criminals back to headquarters for interrogation. At the same time, he decided to immediately head to the address on the note to find the actual crime syndicate.
While waiting for reinforcements, Lynn tried to wake one of the mutants to get more information. However, all three were seriously injured and unable to regain consciousness.
Twenty minutes later, the FBI support team arrived at the steel mill. Lynn briefly explained the situation to them, then drove alone to the address on the note.
The industrial park, located in the southeast of the city, was home to numerous chemical plants and research laboratories. Lynn drove while reflecting on the battle he had just experienced. Although he had successfully subdued three mutants, this encounter made him realize that the kidnapping group's strength far exceeded his expectations. If they truly did have a "Doctor" as their leader, then the size and danger of this organization needed to be reassessed.
More importantly, the fact that the communication mentioned the experiment "entering a critical phase" suggests that Emily is likely in grave danger. If the experiment fails, her life will be threatened; if it succeeds, she could be used as a tool in a larger conspiracy.
Upon arriving at the industrial park, Lynn located a five-story office building based on the address. The building's exterior looked ordinary, with a sign at the entrance reading "Biotechnology Research Co., Ltd." But such an ordinary appearance is often the best disguise.
Lynn didn't rush in; instead, he first surveyed the surrounding area. He noticed several seemingly ordinary pedestrians around the building, but their walking routes and manner of observation clearly indicated a vigilant nature. These people were likely responsible for perimeter security.
Lynn went around to the back of the building and found a cargo loading and unloading area. Several trucks were loading and unloading boxes labeled "medical equipment." But judging from the care taken by the movers, these boxes were definitely not ordinary medical equipment.
Just as Lynn was considering how to infiltrate the building, his phone rang. It was Sarah calling.
“Detective, where are you?” Sarah’s voice sounded anxious. “Headquarters received a strange package containing a video recording made by Emily Zhang.”
"What did she say?" Lynn asked immediately.
"She said she was safe, but forced to participate in a dangerous experiment. She begged us not to attempt a rescue, as that would put her in greater danger. But Inspector, I feel there's something wrong with this video; Emily's eyes and tone are very unnatural, as if she was forced to record it."
Lynn's mood grew even heavier. The kidnappers were clearly trying to stop the FBI's rescue operation, and Emily was likely under immense pressure.
“Sarah, analyze that video immediately and see if you can find any clues about where it was filmed,” Lynn ordered. “At the same time, send a team to my current location to provide support.”
"Understood, Inspector. What is your exact location now?"
Lynn reported his location and then continued to observe the building. He noticed that several windows on the third floor were emitting unusually bright light, unlike typical office lighting.
Just then, Lynn saw a familiar figure emerge from the side door of the building. It was a middle-aged man in a white lab coat, with gray hair and thick glasses. Although he was some distance away, Lynn, based on his years of observational experience, was certain that this was the "Doctor" the kidnappers had mentioned.
Two bodyguards accompanied the doctor; their manner of walking and level of alertness clearly indicated they were also mutants. The doctor got into a black sedan and left the industrial park.
Lynn faced a choice: follow the doctor or continue investigating the building? Ultimately, he decided to first confirm if Emily was inside. If she was, rescuing her was the top priority.
Using the cargo loading and unloading area as cover, Lynn successfully infiltrated the building. The first floor was an ordinary office area, but Lynn could smell a strange chemical odor in the air. He carefully moved up the stairs, observing his surroundings on each floor.
Upon reaching the third floor, Lynn heard some strange noises, like the hum of machinery and occasional human voices. Peering through the crack in the door, he saw that it was indeed a laboratory, with several researchers busily working inside.
More importantly, deep inside the laboratory, Lynn spotted a familiar figure. A young Asian girl sat in a peculiar chair, her head connected to various wires and sensors. Although he could only see her profile, Lynn was certain it was Emily Zhang.
Now, he needed to devise a rescue plan. But just then, he heard footsteps behind him. Lynn quickly turned around and saw two guards walking towards him.
Lynn quickly assessed the situation. Two guards were approaching him from both ends of the corridor, clearly intending to surround him. Judging from their gait and posture, both were professionally trained and likely mutants as well.
The guard on the left was burly and muscular, his every step causing the floor to tremble slightly. The guard on the right was relatively thin, but his eyes were unusually sharp, and his fingers twitched occasionally, as if he were about to unleash some kind of power at any moment.
"Halt! Who are you?" the burly guard shouted, reaching for his walkie-talkie at his waist.
Lynn knew he couldn't let them sound the alarm, or the entire building's security would be alerted. He didn't answer, but acted swiftly.
Lynn charged towards the gaunt guard on his right, knowing that this type of enemy often possessed ranged attack capabilities and needed to be dealt with first. The gaunt guard didn't disappoint Lynn; green gas suddenly erupted from his hands and rushed towards Lynn's face.
“A gas manipulator,” Lynn judged in his mind. He immediately held his breath and pulled a wet towel from his waist to cover his mouth and nose. This was one of the preparations he made before the mission, and he hadn’t expected it to actually come in handy.
The green gas spread rapidly through the air, but Lynn had already reached the thin guard. The guard clearly hadn't anticipated Lynn's protective measures and hastily tried to retreat, but it was too late.
Lynn delivered a powerful punch to the thin guard's temple, instantly knocking him unconscious and causing him to collapse to the ground. The green gas dissipated as well.
Just as Lynn dealt with the first guard, the burly guard rushed forward. His fist gleamed with a metallic sheen, clearly possessing some kind of body-enhancing ability. If that punch landed, it would be enough to shatter an ordinary person's bones. (End of Chapter)
