Chapter 405 The Outcome of the Operation
"Can you sabotage the elevator system? Prevent them from using it?"
“I can try.” Evan focused his attention, and Lynn could see the elevator doors in the distance beginning to tremble.
A few minutes later, the elevator emitted a loud mechanical malfunction sound and then stopped completely.
“Good! Now they’re trapped here too!” Lynn said. “But we still need to find a way out.”
Just then, Evan pointed to a sign in the corner of the parking lot. "There's an emergency exit there! The stairwell!"
They abandoned the car and ran towards the stairwell, the footsteps and shouts of their pursuers echoing behind them. As they entered the stairwell, Lynn locked the door, but he knew it would only buy them a few more minutes.
“We have to get to the surface and then find other transportation,” Lynn said.
Climbing ten floors was a challenge for Evan, but the adrenaline gave him extra strength. As they reached the ground floor, they heard the sound of a door being kicked open behind them.
“They’re catching up!” Evan said, panting.
Lynn pushed open the door to the stairwell, and they found themselves on a busy commercial street. The many pedestrians and vehicles provided some degree of cover.
“We need to blend into the crowd,” Lynn said, “and then find a safe place to contact backup.”
They walked into the crowd, trying to look like ordinary passersby.
Lynn pulled Evan along quickly through Philadelphia's bustling commercial streets, trying to find cover in the crowd. The streets were brightly lit at night, and the neon lights of various shops cast colorful reflections on the wet pavement. Pedestrians hurried by, and no one noticed the two men who looked nervous.
“Where are we going now?” Evan asked in a low voice, his voice still carrying the fear from the chase.
“Let’s find a safe place to contact backup first,” Lynn replied, glancing around for any suspicious individuals. “They have a lot of men; we need to wait for federal reinforcements to arrive.”
Just then, Lynn noticed two men in dark coats across the street looking in their direction. One of them seemed to be talking on a radio.
“Damn it, they’ve found us.” Lynn immediately changed direction, leading Evan into an alley. “They’ve deployed people throughout the entire block.”
"How did they find us so quickly?" Evan asked, panting.
“There might be a surveillance system, and there might be an inside man,” Lynn replied succinctly. “Now is not the time to discuss this.”
They walked through the alley and onto another street. It was relatively quieter here, but Lynn knew this quiet might be more dangerous. The enemy might be surrounding the area.
Lynn took out his phone and dialed the FBI emergency hotline.
"This is Detective Hall, ID 7742. I've encountered a large-scale hostile operation in Philadelphia and require immediate support."
"Roger that, Inspector Hall. Please report your exact location."
"Downtown Philadelphia, near the intersection of Fifth Street and Market Street. At least twelve enemy soldiers, well-equipped, suspected to be mercenaries."
"Understood. The nearest reinforcements are expected to arrive in twenty minutes. Please maintain contact and avoid engaging in combat as much as possible."
“Roger that.” Lynn hung up and turned to Evan. “We need to hold out for twenty minutes.”
"Twenty minutes?" Evan's face turned pale. "They won't find us in five minutes."
“Then we can’t stay in one place,” Lynn began to devise a plan. “We need to keep moving, using the urban environment for cover.”
They moved quickly along the streets, Lynn using his knowledge of the city's layout to choose the best route. As an FBI agent, he had received urban warfare training and knew how to evade pursuit in complex environments.
“Evan, is your metal control ability still usable?” Lynn asked.
“I’m alright, but I’m a little tired,” Evan replied. “Using my abilities just now took a lot of energy.”
"If necessary, is it possible to disable the tracking equipment? Like the radio or the cell phone?"
“If we’re close enough, it should be possible,” Evan said. “But I need to be able to see the target.”
As they discussed strategy, Lynn heard the sound of a car engine in the distance. The sound was distinctive—deep and powerful, like that of a military vehicle.
“They’ve brought in more men,” Lynn concluded. “We need to find a better hiding place.”
He noticed a subway station entrance ahead. "There! We can use the subway system to get around."
They hurried toward the subway station, but just as they reached the entrance, Lynn spotted several suspicious figures inside. These people were dressed in plainclothes, but their positioning and behavior clearly indicated professional training.
"The subway station is also under surveillance." Lynn stopped immediately. "Their organization is stronger than I imagined."
"Then what do we do?" Evan began to feel desperate.
Lynn looked around and suddenly noticed a detail. There was a large 24-hour pharmacy across the street, and an ambulance was parked in front of it.
“There,” Lynn pointed to the pharmacy, “we need to create an emergency.”
"What's the meaning?"
“Trust me,” Lynn said, pulling Evan quickly across the street. “We’ll play along in this scene.”
They arrived at the pharmacy entrance, and Lynn suddenly shouted, "Quick! This man is having a heart attack!"
The customers and staff in the store immediately noticed them. Although confused, Evan cooperated by clutching his chest and pretending to be in pain.
“Has anyone called an ambulance?” Lynn continued, showing his FBI badge. “I’m a federal agent, and this man is a key witness!”
The pharmacy manager rushed over immediately. "The ambulance is outside! We'll contact the paramedics right away!"
A few minutes later, Lynn and Evan were rushed to the ambulance. In the ambulance, Lynn quietly explained the situation to the paramedics.
“We need your help.” Lynn showed his identification. “This young man’s life is in danger, and we need to leave this area safely.”
The female medical worker glanced at the identification and nodded. "We can take you to the hospital, where you can contact support."
“Thank you,” Lynn said gratefully.
The ambulance began to move, and Lynn peered out the rear window at the street. He saw several men in dark coats searching around the pharmacy, but they didn't seem to suspect the ambulance.
“You’re so clever,” Evan said quietly. “They won’t suspect an ambulance.”
“This is just a temporary measure,” Lynn cautioned. “Once we get to the hospital, they might realize it’s a ruse.”
Ten minutes later, the ambulance arrived at Philadelphia General Hospital. Lynn and Evan left through the back door of the emergency department, avoiding the main entrance.
At the hospital, Lynn found a quiet corner and contacted the FBI again for assistance.
"This is Detective Hall. I'm currently at Philadelphia General Hospital. Has the support team arrived?" "Detective Hall, the support team has arrived in Philadelphia, but they haven't found you at your last reported location."
“We’ve been moved. We’re in the hospital now, but it’s not safe here either.”
"Understood. We will send an armored convoy to pick you up. Please wait in the secure area of the hospital."
After hanging up the phone, Lynn took Evan to the hospital's secure room. This was an area specifically set up for high-risk patients, with additional security measures.
“We’ll wait here for backup,” Lynn said. “It shouldn’t take more than ten minutes.”
But just as they sat down, the hospital's alarm system went off. An urgent announcement came over the loudspeaker: "Attention all personnel, a security check is underway at the hospital. Please remain calm and cooperate with staff instructions."
“They’ve found us.” Lynn immediately stood up. “We must leave right now.”
“But you said the support would arrive soon,” Evan said, puzzled.
“If we get caught, there’s no point in providing support.” Lynn began looking for other ways out. “The hospital is so big, there must be other ways to leave.”
They left through the back door of the security room and entered the hospital's service corridor. This area was rarely used, providing a relatively safe route of movement.
Lynn's phone rang; it was the support team calling.
"Detective Hall, we've reached the hospital's perimeter, but we've discovered a large number of unidentified individuals operating around the area."
“They’ve surrounded the hospital,” Lynn said. “Can you break through the encirclement?”
"The firepower disparity is unfavorable. Their equipment is advanced, and they have the terrain advantage."
“Then we’ll have to find our own way out,” Lynn decided. “You all stay on the perimeter and provide immediate support once we’re out of danger.”
"Understood, Inspector. Please be careful."
Lynn shut down the communication and turned to Evan. "Looks like we'll have to rely on ourselves."
“I’m exhausted,” Evan said honestly. “I don’t know how much longer I can keep going.”
“Hang in there a little longer,” Lynn encouraged. “We’ve come this far; we can’t give up.”
They proceeded along the service corridor and eventually reached the hospital's basement. This area contained various hospital equipment and storage rooms; the environment was complex but relatively safe.
“We can find an exit to the outside from here,” Lynn said. “Large hospitals usually have multiple emergency exits.”
They searched the basement for ten minutes and finally found an emergency exit leading to the parking lot. But when they opened the door, they found two armed guards outside.
“Damn it.” Lynn slammed the door shut. “They’ve even got the emergency exits under surveillance.”
“What do we do now?” Evan asked.
Lynn pondered his options. They were trapped in the basement, all exits blocked. But perhaps this was an opportunity.
“Evan, there are a lot of metal devices here. Can you control them?”
Evan looked around and saw various medical equipment, pipes, and electrical installations. "It should be possible, but I need to know your plans."
“We’ll create a huge disruption, then escape in the chaos,” Lynn explained. “Can you make all these devices malfunction simultaneously?”
“I’ll give it a try.” Evan focused his mind and began to affect the surrounding metal objects.
A few minutes later, various mechanical malfunctions began to emanate from the basement. The air conditioning system emitted a piercing noise, the elevator stopped working, and the backup generator malfunctioned.
The hospital's lighting system began to flash, and the emergency alarms sounded again. This time, it wasn't a security check, but a genuine equipment malfunction emergency.
“Excellent!” Lynn praised. “Now they must distract themselves from these problems.”
Taking advantage of the chaos, they returned to the emergency exit. Sure enough, the original guard had left to deal with the equipment malfunction.
They carefully exited the building and went to the parking lot. It was relatively quiet there, and most of their attention was focused on the equipment malfunction in the main hospital building.
Lynn's phone rang; it was a call from the support team.
"Detective Hall, there's a major equipment failure at the hospital, and enemy personnel are redeploying. This is a good opportunity."
“We’ve exited the building and are in the south parking lot,” Lynn reported the location.
"Received, we are moving towards your location."
A few minutes later, two black armored vehicles appeared at the parking lot entrance. Four fully armed FBI agents got out of the vehicles and quickly established a defensive position.
"Detective Hall!" one of the agents shouted, "Move to our location immediately!"
Lynn and Evan ran quickly toward the armored vehicle, shouts of "The enemy has spotted us!" coming from behind. Gunfire erupted again, but this time the FBI's support firepower was much stronger.
"Get in the car!" the special agent captain ordered.
They jumped into the armored vehicle, which immediately began to move. Through the bulletproof glass, Lynn could see several enemy vehicles attempting to give chase, but the FBI's second armored vehicle covered their rear, effectively halting the pursuit.
"Target safe." The agent captain reported over the radio. "Evacuating Philadelphia, expected to reach safe zone in one hour."
In the car, Evan finally breathed a sigh of relief. "Are we really safe?"
“It’s safe for now,” Lynn replied, “but this is just the beginning. This attack has proven the strength and resolve of the Blackwood organization.”
"Why would they do this?" Evan was still confused. "I only stole some money; it's not worth using so many people."
“It’s not about the money,” Lynn explained. “They want to kill you because you’re a mutant. Stealing the money just gave them an excuse.”
“But this is insane,” Evan shook his head. “Just because of our abilities, they’re going to kill us?”
“Fear drives people to do crazy things,” Lynn said. “And Blackwood wasn’t just driven by fear; he had a whole ideology that underpinned his behavior.”
The armored convoy sped along the highway, heading towards New York. Lynn contacted FBI headquarters via the vehicle's communication system to report the results of the operation.
"Chief Johnson, this is Inspector Hall. The target is safe and is returning to headquarters."
“Very good, Inspector Hall. This operation has revealed a lot of information, and we need to reassess the threat level of the Blackwood organization.”
"Their organizational capabilities and resources far exceeded our expectations," Lynn reported. "They were able to mobilize a large number of armed personnel in a short period of time and were capable of infiltrating local law enforcement." (End of Chapter)
