Chapter 361 The Beginning of an Even Bigger Mystery
“I’ll count to three,” Lynn Hall whispered, “then I’ll create a commotion to distract them, and you can use that to rescue the mutant.”
Jennifer nodded, her hand already on the holster.
"one two three!"
Lynn Hall suddenly stood up and fired two shots at the other side of the warehouse, the bullets hitting a row of lights on the wall. Glass shards and sparks flew everywhere, and the warehouse was in chaos.
"FBI! Everyone stay still!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the empty warehouse.
Panic immediately gripped the crowd below. The two bodyguards drew their weapons and fired in Lynn Hall's direction. The scientists scattered and fled, but Flame remained calm, a dangerous glint in his eyes.
"Intruders!" she shouted, her hands suddenly bursting into bright flames. "Grab them!"
Lynn Hall quickly repositioned himself and continued firing, creating an opportunity for Jennifer. Taking advantage of the chaos, Jennifer swiftly descended to the ground from the other side and charged towards the bound mutant.
A bodyguard spotted her and fired, but Jennifer was prepared. She quickly rolled away to dodge and returned fire accurately, hitting the bodyguard in the shoulder and temporarily incapacitating him.
Lynn Hall was battling another bodyguard and Flame. Flame's abilities made her the most dangerous opponent—she could control flames, shaping them into various forms to attack. A fireball flew towards Lynn Hall; he barely dodged it, but could feel the scorching heat grazing his cheek.
“You meddlesome federal agents,” Flame sneered, his hands blazing again, “always meddling in things that aren’t your business.”
“Using mutants for crimes and human experimentation is exactly what we should be doing,” Lynn Hall calmly responded, while observing his surroundings to find an advantage to exploit.
Meanwhile, Jennifer had reached the bound mutant and began to untie him. “FBI,” she said quickly, “we’re here to rescue you. Can you walk?”
The young man nodded weakly. "Okay. Thank you."
She untied the last restraint and helped the young man to his feet. "We have to get out of here. What's your name?"
“Mark Wilson,” he answered, his voice trembling with weakness, “they arrested me because I can sense and influence electronic devices.”
“Electronic sensing capabilities,” Jennifer nodded knowingly. “Now I need your help. Can you disable those devices connected to the wine?”
Mark looked at the complex experimental setup and nodded. "I'll give it a try."
He reached out and focused. The experimental device began to flash, emitted a piercing alarm, and then suddenly emitted a puff of smoke, shutting down completely.
Meanwhile, Lynnhall was engaged in a fierce battle with the flames. The flames' attacks grew increasingly intense, and Lynnhall's situation became more and more dangerous.
"You can't stop us," Flame roared with laughter. "The power of the Dragon's Blood Tears will completely change the fate of mutants!"
Just then, the explosion of the experimental device distracted Flame. Lynn Hall seized the opportunity and fired quickly, the bullet striking Flame's arm precisely, temporarily extinguishing her flames.
“Jennifer! Red wine!” Lynn Hall shouted.
Jennifer immediately understood what he meant, rushed to the glass case, and grabbed the old bottle of red wine. It looked unremarkable—an old-fashioned dark glass bottle containing a deep red liquid, with a strange flower pattern engraved on the stopper.
“Let’s go!” she shouted, helping Mark toward the exit.
Lynn Hall followed closely behind, occasionally turning back to fire cover their retreat. Just as they were about to reach the exit, Flame rose again, his hands bursting into flames even more fiercely than before.
"You can't escape!" she roared, and a huge wall of fire suddenly rose in front of the exit, blocking their way.
A wave of heat hit them, forcing the three to retreat. The situation was critical; the exit was blocked, and Lieyan and the remaining bodyguards were closing in.
“Mark,” Lynn Hall suddenly turned to the young mutant, “you can control electronic devices, right? There’s a fire sprinkler system up there, can you trigger it?”
Mark looked up and nodded. "I'll give it a try."
He focused again and stretched out his hands. A few seconds later, the fire sprinkler system on the ceiling suddenly activated, and water poured down like rain. The flames let out a painful scream, and her fire was quickly extinguished in the water.
"Go!" Lynn Hall shouted, and the three of them rushed toward the now-extinguished wall of fire, through the exit, and into the sunlight outside.
They had just run out of the warehouse when they heard sirens in the distance—support had finally arrived.
“Perfect timing,” Jennifer said breathlessly, still clutching the bottle of red wine tightly.
Several FBI vehicles sped up, and the agents quickly got out and surrounded the warehouse. Lynn Hall briefly explained the situation to the team leader, emphasizing that there were dangerous mutant criminals inside.
“We need medical personnel,” he said, pointing to Mark. “This gentleman is a victim of kidnapping and needs to be examined.”
Paramedics quickly took over Mark's care and got him into the ambulance. Lynn Hall and Jennifer went over to say goodbye.
“Thank you,” Mark said sincerely. “If it weren’t for you, I might have become their guinea pig.”
“You’re welcome,” Lynn Hall smiled. “You’ve helped us a lot too.”
"That bottle of red wine... can it really affect mutant abilities?" Mark asked curiously.
Lynn Hall glanced at the bottle in Jennifer's hand. "We don't know, and we don't intend to find out. Something like this is too dangerous; it shouldn't fall into anyone's hands."
“There will be a dedicated team to handle it,” Jennifer added. “It will be kept securely to ensure it is not misused.”
Mark nodded in understanding. The paramedics closed the ambulance doors, and Mark was taken to the hospital for further examination.
The support team began searching the warehouse and arresting the Black Crow members inside. However, when they returned, Flame had vanished—she had escaped during the chaos.
“She can’t get far,” an agent from a special task force said. “We’ll issue a warrant.” Lynn Hall and Jennifer returned to their car with a glass of red wine. The day’s events had left them both exhausted, but they had successfully completed their mission—retrieving the Dragon’s Blood Tear, thwarting Black Crow’s plan, and rescuing an innocent mutant.
“Should we take the wine straight to the evidence room?” Jennifer asked, still carefully holding the old bottle.
Lynn Hall pondered for a moment, then shook his head. "No, send it to the lab for a safety assessment first. We need to determine just how dangerous this thing is before deciding how to handle it."
He started the car and drove away from the industrial area where the warehouse was located. It was already getting dark, and the setting sun cast a golden-red glow on the Brooklyn skyline.
"Do you think Black Crow will give up?" Jennifer asked, looking out the window at the passing scenery.
“No,” Lynn Hall answered firmly, “this is just the beginning. The flames have escaped, but the ravens are still out there. They will come back.”
“Then we’ll stop them again,” Jennifer said, her voice filled with determination.
Lynn Hall smiled slightly and nodded. "Yes, we will."
As the car drove into the Manhattan night, the two fell silent. They had won today, but the war had only just begun. The Dragon's Blood Tear had been retrieved, but the threat and temptation it represented remained. As long as anyone sought to exploit mutant abilities for personal gain, Lynn Hall and his colleagues would continue to fight.
Back at FBI headquarters, Lynn Hall carefully handed the wine to the laboratory experts.
“Be very careful,” he cautioned. “We don’t yet know all the characteristics of this thing.”
Dr. Nord, the lab director, a stern-looking man in his sixties with white hair, put on special gloves and took the bottle. "Rest assured, Inspector Hall, we will handle this strictly according to hazardous materials protocols. Preliminary analysis results should be available as early as tomorrow."
Lynn Hall nodded his thanks, then returned to the office with Jennifer to begin writing the report. Although it was nearly nine o'clock in the evening, they both knew the report had to be completed immediately—the case might involve national security.
"Do you think Mark will be alright?" Jennifer asked as she typed.
Lynn Hall paused his typing, thinking for a moment. "He should. The medical examination shows he wasn't seriously injured. However, I've already arranged for protection, just in case Black Crow wants to retaliate."
“A wise decision,” Jennifer agreed. “Given his capabilities, Black Raven certainly won’t give up easily.”
Just as the two were focused on the report, there was a knock on the office door. Lynn Hall's superior, Charles Hamilton, the FBI's Manhattan field director, walked in. He was a tall African American in his fifties, always impeccably dressed in a three-piece suit, with eyes as sharp as an eagle.
“Hall, Morrison,” he said in a deep voice, “well done. The initial report has reached me.”
“Thank you, sir,” Lynn Hall said, “but Flame escaped, and we are still tracking him.”
Hamilton waved his hand. “You recovered the wine and rescued the hostages; that’s a huge success. But…” His expression turned serious, “Homeland Security has taken an interest in the case. They’ve sent a special counsel who will take over the investigation tomorrow morning.”
Lynn Hall frowned, but did not object. He knew this was not uncommon in major cases involving mutants.
“We will cooperate, sir,” he said calmly, though he didn’t entirely agree with the decision.
Hamilton nodded, seemingly satisfied with the response. "Very good. Go home and rest after you've finished your report; you two have had a long day. An advisor from the Department of Homeland Security will be waiting for you in my office at nine o'clock tomorrow morning."
After saying that, he turned and left the office, leaving Lynn Hall and Jennifer to continue their work.
“The Department of Homeland Security,” Jennifer whispered after Hamilton left, “means the case is at a higher level than we thought.”
Lynn Hall leaned back in his chair, rubbing his tired eyes. "It also means we've only discovered the tip of the iceberg. The Black Raven's plan, the secret of the Dragon's Blood Tears... it's all far more complex than it appears."
As night deepened, the lights in the FBI headquarters gradually went out, except for Lynn Hall's office, where the light remained on. He stood by the window, gazing at the Manhattan skyline, lost in thought. The day had begun with a simple investigation, but had escalated into a race against time to rescue people, and had also uncovered a dangerous item that could threaten all mutants.
“The report is complete,” Jennifer’s voice interrupted his thoughts. “I’ve sent it to Hamilton and the archives.”
“Thank you, Morrison,” Lynn Hall turned to his partner, giving him a tired but grateful smile. “You did a great job today.”
Jennifer smiled slightly and began packing her things. "You too. Although you disobeyed orders and acted alone again, I forgive you this time because the outcome was good."
Lynn Hall chuckled and shrugged. "Sometimes you have to trust your gut."
He began packing his belongings, shutting down his computer, preparing to end this long day. Just then, his phone rang. It was Dr. Nord from the lab.
“Hall,” he answered the phone, “any findings?”
On the other end of the phone, Dr. Nord sounded unusually excited: "Detective Hall, you need to be back in the lab immediately. We've done preliminary analysis of the red wine and found something very unusual."
Lynn Hall and Jennifer exchanged a worried look. "We'll be right there," he said, then hung up the phone.
“Looks like our day isn’t over yet,” Jennifer sighed, but her eyes sparkled with curiosity.
Lynn Hall nodded, grabbing his coat. "Yes, I have a feeling this is just the beginning of a much bigger mystery."
The laboratory lights were brighter than usual, perhaps because it was nearing midnight and Lynn Hall and Jennifer's eyes were already exhausted. They hurried through the corridors of the FBI headquarters, the elevator descending to the third basement level, where the top-secret research facilities were located.
The access control system recognized Lynn Hall's iris and fingerprints, and the heavy metal door slid open slowly. Dr. Nord was already waiting for them, his white lab coat gleaming coldly under the fluorescent lights, his eyes unusually bright with excitement.
“Detective Hall, Agent Morrison,” Dr. Nord approached, his voice trembling slightly with excitement, “our findings are astonishing. Please come with me.”
He led the two into an isolated laboratory, where, on the central workbench, the vial of Dragon's Blood Tears was carefully secured in a special device. The stopper had been removed, and a small portion of the deep red liquid had been separated into several different test tubes.
“First,” Dr. Nord began, pointing to the display screen on the wall, “this is indeed a 300-year-old bottle of red wine, but its ingredients are extraordinary.”
The screen displayed complex molecular structure diagrams and analytical data. Although Lynn Hall wasn't a scientist, he was well-trained and able to decipher some basic chemical analysis results. (End of Chapter)
