Chapter 325 High-Risk Mission
Mark gripped his weapon tightly. "We can't risk firing; it'll attract more people."
Lynn thought for a moment. “I have a plan. You stay here, I’ll distract them. Once they’ve left this area, you head straight to the evacuation point and meet up with the support team.”
Mark shook his head. "It's too dangerous. I can't let you take the risk alone."
Lynn's eyes hardened. "That's an order, Wilson. We must ensure the intelligence we gather reaches headquarters safely. You take the data; I'll distract them."
Before Mark could protest again, Lynn had already produced a small device that looked like a remote control. "This will create an explosion and flash in the direction we came from, drawing them away. You have to seize this opportunity."
He pressed the button on the device and threw it a distance away. A few seconds later, a loud bang came from the direction of the cliff, accompanied by a bright flash. Just as Lynn had expected, the two guards immediately turned and ran in that direction, weapons at their ready.
“Now!” Lynn gestured for Mark to act. “Remember, if I don’t get there in time, don’t wait for me. Leave with the support team.”
Mark reluctantly nodded and began moving towards the designated extraction point. Lynn, on the other hand, ran in the opposite direction, deliberately leaving obvious tracks to attract the attention of the pursuers.
Mark moved quickly but carefully, using every rock and crevice as cover. Rain lashed his face, blurring his vision, but he pressed on resolutely. He could hear shouts and commands in the distance; Lynn's plan was clearly working, and most of the search party had been led in the wrong direction.
As he approached the evacuation point, he saw a small sandy cove surrounded by tall rocks, providing natural cover. He crouched behind the last rock, surveyed his surroundings for danger, and then cautiously made his way to the center of the sand.
Almost at the same moment, he heard the sound of an engine. A black speedboat was approaching at high speed from the sea, almost unaffected by the raging winds and waves. This must be their support team.
Mark walked to the water's edge and gave the speedboat a pre-arranged signal—a red flash of a specific frequency. The speedboat immediately changed direction and headed directly towards him.
As the speedboat approached, Mark could see four fully armed agents on board, vigilantly surveying their surroundings. One of them waved to him, signaling him to board quickly.
“Agent Wilson?” the agent asked, his voice almost drowned out by the rain. “Where is Inspector Hall?”
“He’s drawing away the pursuers,” Mark said breathlessly. “He should be here soon.”
The agent nodded and immediately ordered two of them to disembark and stand guard on the shore. "We'll wait for him for five minutes, then we must leave. The island's defenses are fully activated; any later and we could all be trapped here."
Mark looked anxiously in the direction he had come from, hoping to catch a glimpse of Lynn. The rain was still falling, and visibility was extremely low, but he could hear shouts and occasional gunshots in the distance; clearly, Lynn's entrapment plan had triggered a small-scale manhunt.
“He’ll come,” Mark said firmly, more like reassuring himself. “He always finds a way.”
Several minutes passed, and there was still no sign of Lynn. The agents on guard on the shore began to look anxious, glancing at their watches every now and then.
“Time’s up,” the lead agent finally said. “We must leave.”
“Just one more minute,” Mark pleaded. “Just one minute.”
The agent hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "One minute, no more."
Just then, a dark figure emerged from between the rocks in the distance and moved quickly toward them. Mark immediately recognized it as Lynn, who, despite looking somewhat disheveled—his clothes were torn in several places and his face was stained with blood—still maintained an astonishing speed.
"It's Inspector Hall!" Mark shouted, barely able to hide his joy.
But their joy was quickly shattered, for behind Lynn, several armed guards were in pursuit, their flashlight beams forming bright streaks in the rain. A gunshot rang out, and the bullet struck the sand beside Lynn, sending a spray of sand flying.
"Cover fire!" the agent on the speedboat immediately ordered. Two agents on the shore immediately began firing, accurately targeting the pursuers' positions, forcing them to seek cover and slow down their pursuit.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Lynn sped toward the speedboat, and Mark and another agent immediately reached out and pulled him onto the boat.
"Evacuate everyone!" the chief agent ordered, and the two agents on the shore quickly returned to the ship.
The speedboat's engine roared as it sped into the deep ocean, leaving the island's coastline behind. The pursuers continued to fire, but they were too far away, and most of the bullets landed in the water.
"Is the mission complete?" the agent asked, his voice tinged with tension.
Lynn nodded, his eyes still resolute despite his exhaustion. "It's done. We've obtained crucial evidence that Black Hawk International is conducting illegal human genetic experiments and developing targeted biological weapons."
Mark added, "We have detailed documents and photographic records, enough to keep those bastards standing in the International Court of Justice for decades."
The Special Agent Chief nodded in satisfaction. "Well done. The plane is already waiting at the designated coordinates. We should arrive in about 20 minutes and then immediately return to Washington."
Lynn leaned against the cabin wall and let out a long sigh of relief. "We almost didn't make it out. Their security level was far higher than we expected."
Mark looked at his mentor with admiration. "Your plan worked. The explosive device drew away most of the search team."
Lynn smiled slightly, though the scars on his face made the smile look somewhat painful. "That was only temporary. They quickly realized it was a diversion and sent some men to continue searching towards the evacuation point. I had to use some tricks to shake them off."
“What technique?” Mark asked curiously. Lynn pulled a small device from his pocket. “An emergency pulse generator. It can temporarily interfere with electronic devices within a 20-meter radius, including their communication equipment and night vision gear. Disorienting them in the dark is enough for me to escape.”
The speedboat continued its journey through the waves. The rain began to subside, and the distant Tonalí Island gradually faded into a blurry outline in the darkness. Lynn and Mark exchanged a glance, both seeing relief and the joy of victory in each other's eyes.
"How was your first mission like this?" Lynn asked, a hint of teasing in his voice.
Mark chuckled. "Much more exciting than the training sessions. But to be honest, there was a moment when I really thought we were going to be stuck there."
Lynn nodded, his expression turning serious. “In this line of work, similar situations happen frequently. The important thing is to stay calm and trust your training and judgment.” He patted Mark on the shoulder. “You did a great job there, especially with those documents found in the lab. Without them, we might not have fully understood the dangers of the projects Black Hawk was undertaking.”
Mark felt a surge of pride, but also a sense of unease. "Those experiments... the modifications they were making to the human body... I've never seen such genetic manipulation. Those people—if we can still call them human—look completely mutated."
“This is precisely why we need to stop Black Hawk,” Lynn said gravely. “They’re doing far more than just arms deals; they’re trying to create a whole new kind of biological weapon and super soldiers. If this technology falls into the hands of terrorist organizations, the consequences will be unimaginable.”
The speedboat continued forward, and eventually a small dot appeared on the horizon—their private jet waiting for them. As they drew closer, the outline of the aircraft became clearer: a black, medium-sized jet, parked on a makeshift floating platform.
As the speedboat approached the platform, several agents were already waiting to assist them with boarding. Lynn and Mark took one last look in the direction of Tonalí Island before stepping onto the platform.
"Will there be any follow-up to this operation?" Mark asked, following Lynn toward the plane.
Lynn nodded, his eyes sharpening. "Absolutely. Once our evidence is analyzed and confirmed, an international joint operation will be formed to completely dismantle Black Hawk's entire network, not just the facilities on Tonalí Island." He paused. "But that's not what we need to worry about right now. Our mission is to safely deliver this evidence back to headquarters."
They boarded the plane, the cabin door closed, and the engines roared to life. As the plane lifted off the water and ascended into the cloud-covered sky, the two were finally able to relax.
“I need to take a hot shower, have a decent meal, and then sleep for twelve hours,” Lynn said, leaning back in his comfortable chair and closing his eyes.
Mark smiled. "Sounds like a perfect plan."
Back at FBI headquarters in Washington, Lynn and Mark were immediately taken to a highly secure briefing room. Several senior officials were already waiting for them, including Richard Clayton, the deputy director of the counterterrorism division.
“Detective Hall, Agent Wilson,” Clayton stood to greet them, his face serious, “we have received the initial report. Please tell us the details of what you saw on Tonalí Island.”
Lynn and Mark proceeded to describe their findings in detail, particularly the genetic experiments and potential biological weapons development. The atmosphere in the room became unusually heavy as they showed the photographs taken from the lab and the data they had downloaded.
“This is far more serious than we initially anticipated,” Clayton commented, his brow furrowed. “Black Hawk International is more than just an arms dealer; they are developing technologies that could fundamentally change the nature of warfare.”
“What’s worse,” Lynn added, “is that, according to the documents we found, they have already established contact with several terrorist organizations and are preparing to sell the first batch of ‘products.’ If this technology falls into the hands of terrorists, we will face an unprecedented threat.”
A brief silence fell over the room as everyone processed the significance of this information.
Finally, Clayton stood up, his voice firm, “We need to act immediately. I will coordinate with the Department of Defense and the State Department to form a joint special operations team. Detective Hall, given your knowledge of Tonalí Island, you will be a key member of this team.”
Lynn nodded, his exhaustion evident, but his eyes remained resolute. "I'm ready, sir."
“Agent Wilson,” Clayton turned to Mark, “your performance in this operation was impressive. I hope you will join this special team; your initial understanding of Black Hawk technology will be invaluable.”
Mark felt a surge of excitement and pride. "Thank you for your trust, sir. I won't let you down."
After the meeting, Lynn and Mark walked together toward the elevator, preparing to leave the headquarters building.
The next day.
The morning sunlight streamed through the blinds into Lynn Hall's Manhattan apartment. He opened his eyes, feeling the aches and pains throughout his body. The fatigue from the Tonalí mission hadn't completely subsided after a deep night's sleep, but his mental alertness had returned. He sat up and looked around the space he rarely had the chance to linger in—several old photographs hung on the wall: one of him with his adoptive father, George Stacy, and his sister, Gwen; another of him graduating from police academy.
Lynn stretched, his joints cracking slightly, a reminder that his harrowing escape from Tonalí had indeed left its mark. He went to the bathroom, stood in front of the mirror, and examined his injuries—a shallow abrasion on his right cheekbone, a bruise on his ribs, and several small cuts, all spoils of war from his escape from the island.
The hot water from the shower washed over his body, and steam filled the small bathroom. Lynn closed his eyes, but his thoughts drifted back to his conversation with Deputy Supervisor Clayton yesterday afternoon.
“Hall, you and Wilson did a great job this time,” Clayton said, sitting behind his large desk, his fingers tapping lightly on the surface. “Intelligence is analyzing the data you brought back, and preliminary results suggest this could be one of the biggest threats we’ve discovered in recent years.”
Lynn nodded. "Black Hawk International's experiments have exceeded our initial estimates. The consequences of deploying those biological weapons would be unimaginable."
Clayton took a deep breath. “That’s why we need to form a special operations team. However,” he gestured for Lynn not to respond immediately, “before that, I want you to return to the Manhattan branch to handle some paperwork, and I’ll give you two days off. Rest well and recover your strength.” Seeing Lynn’s intention to object, he continued, “That’s an order, Inspector. You’ve just returned from a high-risk mission and need time to recover. The special operations team can wait.”
Lynn eventually agreed to the arrangement, although deep down he preferred to immediately begin a full investigation into Black Hawk International.
Now, standing under the shower, he realized that Clayton's decision might be the right one. His body really needed rest, and it had been a long time since he'd spent time with his family. With that thought, Lynn turned off the tap, quickly dried himself, and decided to call his adoptive father, George, and sister, Gwen, to arrange a family dinner. (End of Chapter)
