Chapter 867 Touma Kamijou, Time for a Mission!
Forty minutes later, Stiyl re-entered Academy City and went straight to Touma Kamijou's apartment.
After hesitating for a moment at the door, Stiyl decided to try not to disturb Index and quietly went in...
Stiyl was already adept at melting door locks with flames while carefully controlling the process to avoid causing a fire.
Then he quietly went inside.
"What poor vigilance," Stiyl muttered to himself as he looked around. "Where was that guy again?"
Touma Kamijou lives in a single apartment, and because the space is limited, it is difficult to fit a second bed.
Stiyl was pleased to see that Index was occupying the only bed all by herself.
Then Steele noticed that the door to the bathroom was closed, and there was the scent of a living person behind the door.
“Found it.” Stiyl walked over and, using the same trick again, opened the bathroom door.
Kamijou Touma was fast asleep in the bathtub that was filled with water, using it as his bed.
“They’re really completely oblivious,” Steele remarked again.
As soon as he finished speaking, Touma Kamijou, who was in the bathtub, seemed to sense something and slowly woke up.
"!" I woke up from my sleep and suddenly saw a dark figure standing next to me.
Kamijou Touma was so startled he almost jumped up, but because he was stuck in the bathtub, he had nowhere to put his strength and failed to get up. Instead, his head hit the side of the bathtub, making a dull thud.
Amidst his cries of pain, Touma Kamijou finally saw the true identity of the dark figure beside him.
"Stiyl? What are you doing here?"
Then, looking up, he saw a hole burned into the door lock, and Touma Kamijou immediately panicked.
My door!
But before he could say it, Stiyl stopped him: "Shh, do you want to wake Index?"
"You knew you'd wake her! Why did you still barge in!" Touma Kamijou complained in a low voice.
After realizing it was Stiyl, Touma Kamijou's tense nerves completely relaxed.
This fire mage is not an enemy; of course, he is definitely not a "friend" either.
Therefore, Touma Kamijou isn't worried about his and Index's safety; he's just concerned about the cost of repairing the door tomorrow.
—It's reasonable to assume that Stiyl probably used the same method when he entered through the outer gate, so there are two doors to be repaired!
This was a further blow to the already strained finances of the Kamijou family.
"Hmph, please have some self-respect." After learning what he was worried about, Steele scoffed disdainfully, "Don't worry, I'll pay for the replacement of the doors and locks."
"Huh? You're being so kind?" Touma Kamijou calmed down a bit and looked at him with suspicion.
"Of course, even for Index's sake, I'll replace this door with the sturdiest one!" Although she could sense the fire mage's undisguised malice, the fact that he was willing to pay compensation was enough.
Touma Kamijou stopped arguing and finally stood up from the bathtub, then peered towards the doorway.
“Don’t worry,” Steele said. “I was careful when I came in, without disturbing Index; and then…”
He stared at Touma Kamijou's right hand: "From now on, keep your right hand under control and don't move it around!"
"You used magic in my room?" Touma Kamijou immediately realized.
“It’s just a little trick to block out sound,” Steele said, “to make our conversation easier.”
Touma Kamijou's face immediately fell: "I knew it... So, tell me, what trouble have you brought this time? By the way, why do you magicians always like to come to our Academy City!"
“Precisely because this place doesn’t belong to the realm of magic, it becomes even more significant in certain circumstances,” Steele said. “And why do you think we agreed to let Index stay here?”
As he spoke, Steele pulled an envelope from his pocket: "Quickly review the information for this operation, and let's get moving."
"So..." Touma Kamijou listlessly took the documents, then casually turned on the light, "Which magician broke in this time?"
With lightning speed, Steel grabbed a towel and plugged the hole in the door to prevent light from leaking into the room outside.
“It wasn’t an intrusion… well, you could call it that, though,” Steele explained. “As you’ve seen in the files, the target of this operation is Sister Orsola Aquinas, who has been kidnapped by a local sect called the Amakusa Cross. Our task is simple: find her, rescue her, and return her to the Roman Catholic Church.”
"A rescue operation?" Touma Kamijou finally perked up. "A nun..."
As he spoke, Touma Kamijou couldn't help but look towards the door—in the room outside, a nun was fast asleep.
“For various reasons, Orsola took the opportunity to escape Amakusa’s imprisonment and fled into Academy City,” Steele said. “But the problem is that Amakusa’s Cross Church also followed her in, while the Roman Catholic Church’s action forces were forced to wait outside because they could not enter.”
After the explanation, Touma Kamijou finally understood the situation. He also learned about the relationship between the Amakusa-style Cross Cult and Kanzaki Kaori.
"So," Touma Kamijou said, his face filled with disbelief, "the worst-case scenario is that we might even become enemies with Kanzaki this time?"
Recalling the "Angel's Fall" incident not long ago, he had personally witnessed the terrifying power of the Saint. The only person Kamijou Touma could think of to be an enemy of such a monster was Lin Wuming.
“Who knows?” Steele shrugged. “Anyway, finding Sister Osora is the most important thing.”
“Well,” Touma Kamijou asked, “do you have any leads? I don’t mind helping, but it’s a bit too difficult for just the two of us to find someone in the whole city.”
“I do have a few ideas, but I really don’t want to use them unless absolutely necessary.” Steele shook his head; after all, he was just there to help, and there was no need for him to pay too much of a price for the sake of the Roman Catholic Church.
“You’re a resident of this city, so I’m asking you—do you have any good ideas?” Steele asked.
"Hey, I'm just an ordinary high school student. Aren't your expectations of me a little too high?" Touma Kamijou retorted. "I'm not some superhuman like Lin Wuming... Oh right, Lin Wuming!"
Kamijou Touma pounded his fist on his palm: "Lin Wuming will definitely have a way!"
In Touma's opinion, he and Lin Wuming had a fairly good relationship, so asking him for help shouldn't be a problem.
Since it was all for saving lives, Touma Kamijou didn't have much of a psychological burden and didn't care about saving face.
