Hogwarts: Starting with full Unforgivable Curses
Chapter 374 Snape has gone mad!
The Greengrass family is a well-known pure-blood family in the wizarding world. Astoria's current state is most likely due to suffering from some rare magical disease or being afflicted by some incurable curse.
In either case, it piqued his interest, and he has always paid close attention to various special magical phenomena and intractable diseases.
After so many years of research, Dylan discovered that the illness seemed to be related to magic in some way.
While Ginny and Astoria were engrossed in their conversation, Dylan quietly pulled a small notebook and a quill pen from his pocket.
He opened his notebook and quickly wrote a line on the blank page.
Is Astoria's condition related to a magical illness?
"If you understand, please explain in more detail." After writing this, he gently pushed the notebook, moving it to a place where Draco could see it.
Draco was sipping his drink when he caught a glimpse of the writing in the notebook out of the corner of his eye. He paused for a moment, then picked up a quill and wrote his reply below Dylan's handwriting.
'All I know is that her condition is related to a curse, and that this curse is a hereditary curse of the Greengrass family, not something she contracted accidentally.'
He paused, then continued writing.
Astoria was unlucky; many in her family were merely carriers of the curse, showing no symptoms, but her curse struck, causing her current state. Her sister, Daphne, was fortunate; she wasn't affected by the curse and remained healthy.
Astoria was sickly from a young age, which also meant her talent in magic wasn't particularly outstanding.
'The Greengrass family initially suspected she might be a Squib because of this, and almost didn't let her attend Hogwarts. That's all I know about her; the specific details of the curse have been kept very secret by the family.'
After finishing writing, Draco pushed the notebook back in front of Dylan, and gave him a look that indicated he had explained everything he knew.
Dylan picked up the notebook, read through the contents carefully, his brows furrowing slightly as he grew more curious about this family's hereditary curse.
He quietly put the notebook into his pocket, turned his gaze back to Ginny and Astoria who were chatting, and did not ask any further questions.
After all, this involves family privacy, and prying too much would probably not yield any results.
Judging from Draco's understanding of the situation in Astoria, the current cooperative relationship between the Malfoy and Greengrass families is clearly deeper than it appears on the surface.
Without such a close connection, Draco would most likely not know such private information. After all, the root cause of Astoria's physical weakness is a genetic curse passed down through generations of the family. Such matters are usually core secrets of pure-blood families and would never be easily mentioned to outsiders.
The last words Draco wrote beforehand also have a somewhat intriguing quality.
He mentioned that Astoria's magical talent was not outstanding, and she was almost treated as a Squib by her family when she was a child.
This point brings us to a key criterion in the magical world for determining a wizard's identity: magical riots.
In wizarding families or clans, children almost always experience this phenomenon once or several times before formally starting school. This phenomenon is somewhat similar to spellcasting triggered by the body itself, without the need for incantations or wands. It is entirely a natural release of magical energy that has accumulated to a certain level within the body. Some researchers even believe that this is actually the most primitive manifestation of wandless spellcasting.
For wizarding families, the presence of magical disturbances is the core criterion for determining whether a child is a wizard. Even the slightest magical fluctuation is enough to confirm a wizard's status. Conversely, if there are no magical signs for a long time, the child is likely to be identified as a Squib, resulting in an awkward position within the family.
Regarding the magical riots, Harry often shared his experiences at his aunt's house when visiting other people on the Hogwarts Express.
He once said that Aunt Petunia thought his hair was too long and cut it into a mess with scissors. Harry was worried about having a weird hairstyle before going to bed, but when he woke up the next day, his hair had miraculously returned to normal, exactly the same as before the haircut.
And situations like scaring a chubby kid to death with a giant python.
Ginny and Ron had previously told Dylan about their magical rampage experiences.
After a moment's thought, Dylan picked up his notebook again and wrote a line below the previous writing.
'Draco, do you know the specifics of Miss Greengrass's magical rampage? If so, could you describe it in more detail?'
He pushed the notebook in front of Draco again, his eyes filled with obvious curiosity.
Draco stared at the words on the notebook, his fingers tapping lightly on the table as if recalling relevant details. After a while, he picked up the quill pen and slowly wrote down his reply.
'Of all the magical disturbances I've ever heard of, hers was the most indescribable. While everyone knows that the first unleashing of magic takes many forms and has no fixed pattern, Astoria's experience was not only strange, but even a little frightening.'
"But the truth is, one of the house-elves who was responsible for caring for Astoria at the time was affected by the energy from her magical outburst and fell into an irreversible state of madness. He was mostly delirious and had very little time to recognize himself."
Dylan looked at Astoria not far away and noticed that she was wearing a necklace around her neck.
The necklace was not exactly exquisite; the chain was much wider than that of a regular necklace, obviously to leave enough space for the runes to be inscribed. Judging from the design of the necklace and the style of the runes, it must have a long history and may have been passed down for several generations.
Dylan quietly activated the magic within him and opened his eyes.
The necklace exuded a subtle magic.
Based on the information he had gathered, Dylan quickly figured it out.
The Greengrass family wanted to use a spell to resist the negative energy emanating from their family's inherited curse and prevent those around them from being affected. This discovery suddenly reminded him of something Luna had told him about a lesson on protecting magical creatures before the Christmas holidays.
Hagrid drove a flock of wretched birds to the edge of the Forbidden Forest and had his students practice picking their feathers.
The Evil Witch Bird is a very special and magical animal. Its high-pitched call has a strong magical power. As long as people hear this call, they will gradually lose their minds and go crazy.
For this reason, in the magical world, to obtain the right to keep a Witchbird, one must apply for a specific license from the Ministry of Magic, and to obtain this license, one must master a certain spell.
Silently.
This magic can effectively block out the calls of the evil bird and prevent oneself from being affected.
Draco and Astoria Greengrass got up and left.
Dylan and Ginny glanced at the dance floor simultaneously.
The dance floor was now several times larger than before, and the scene was so lively it was almost out of control, resembling a chaotic dance. Everyone was swaying wildly to the powerful rhythm of the music, waving their arms, jumping around, and letting loose all the energy they had accumulated throughout the day, their faces full of unrestrained smiles.
Fred, George, and Lee Jordan completely let loose, each holding a magic firework that flashed with colorful light. They must have cast some strange spell on themselves, because they started spinning rapidly in place like tops. The light from the firework drew brilliant arcs with their movements, eliciting cheers from the surrounding students.
On the other side, Dumbledore was dancing with Professor McGonagall, their movements elegant and perfectly in sync.
Professor McGonagall's attention was constantly drawn to the three spinning figures. She would turn her head to look at them every now and then, afraid that they might cause some trouble. Several times, she almost stepped on Dumbledore's shoes because she was distracted. She could only laugh awkwardly and refocus her attention.
"It's too noisy here, let's go outside and see the fairy?" Ginny turned her gaze away from Dylan, her eyes full of anticipation.
Dylan looked into her bright eyes and, having no reason to refuse the suggestion, nodded: "Okay, let's go now."
The two slowly made their way through the noisy crowd and out of the auditorium.
Outside the castle, the cave and its surrounding area that we had seen earlier were far more exquisite than what we had seen at the entrance of the Great Hall.
Besides the blooming rose bushes inside the cave, the winding path outside the cave is lined with neatly trimmed shrubs, interspersed with uniquely shaped stone sculptures, including eagles with outstretched wings, crouching lions, and coiled snakes, each one carved with lifelike detail.
Looking further into the distance, you can see a huge circular fountain. The water shimmers in the night, like soft silver ribbons cascading down from the top of the stone sculpture and into the pool below, making a gurgling sound that is especially clear in the quiet night.
There were many wooden benches placed beside the bushes, but unfortunately every bench was full of people, all of them couples dancing together.
Pedestrians passed by from time to time, but it didn't affect them at all. Most of the couples stayed close together, whispering sweet nothings to each other as if no one else was around. The boys whispered in the girls' ears, while the girls laughed and gently punched the boys' arms. The atmosphere was sweet and warm.
Some dance partners even brought snacks from the auditorium. They sat on the benches, either sharing a single spoon and taking bites of a slice of cream cake, or they simply didn't use a spoon and ate it with their hands. They didn't care if the cream got on their lips; instead, they smiled at each other and gently wiped the residue from each other's mouths with their fingertips.
As soon as Ginny stepped onto the path leading to the cave, several palm-sized fairies flew out from the rose bushes.
They fluttered their transparent wings, some perched on Ginny's shoulders, some landed in her hair, and a few circled around her earrings, making a soft "buzzing" sound, clearly attracted by the luster of the fluorite on the earrings.
It is the nature of fairies to be like this. Whenever they see something beautiful, they will fly over willingly to serve as a foil, using their presence to make that beauty stand out even more.
Ginny was clearly interested in these little fairies. She gently opened her palm, and several of the bolder fairies immediately flew up and moved back and forth in her palm, occasionally scratching her skin with their tiny claws, which made Ginny chuckle.
Dylan looked at the fountain not far away and thought about walking over there to see if there were any empty benches around the fountain where Ginny could sit down and rest for a while.
He had only taken a few steps forward when he saw a familiar figure walking quickly toward him.
It's Michael Corner from Ravenclaw College.
Michael was also holding the hand of a strange girl who was wearing a dark robe that was different from the Hogwarts school uniform.
"Dylan!" Michael shouted at him from afar, his expression strange, his face full of fear and panic, as if he had encountered something terrible.
"Run! Run back!" He frantically signaled to Dylan as he ran, his eyes almost overflowing with urgency, as if a monster was about to catch up and they had to run back immediately.
Seeing this, Dylan instinctively took out his wand from his pocket and held it in his hand, but before he could make any further moves, he was stopped by Michael who rushed over.
Dylan and Ginny were both a little confused, but seeing Michael's anxious look, they quickly followed him back to the vicinity of the oak gate.
"This is...this is terrifying...it's absolutely terrifying!" Michael leaned against the door, panting heavily, his words slurred. "How...how could anyone do this! Deducting points without even asking what happened!"
"Michael, what happened? Tell me slowly." Dylan patted his back to help him catch his breath, his tone full of doubt. For Michael, who was usually so calm, to be so flustered, it must be something serious.
Michael took several deep breaths, finally catching his breath, and his speech became a little more coherent: "It's Professor Snape! He suddenly appeared patrolling by the fountain, and I don't know what kind of poison he's taken, but he deducts points from anyone who gets even slightly close to the pool!"
He swallowed hard, nearly choking on his saliva as he recalled the scene, his voice trembling slightly: "The Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Gryffindor students all lost points because of him! Even the Slytherin students were so frightened by his serious expression that they ran away immediately and didn't dare to come near him!"
"I just heard someone shout 'points deducted' up ahead, so I quickly grabbed Sabina and ran back. Luckily we ran fast, otherwise we would definitely have lost points too!" Michael said, pointing to the girl next to him. "This time he went even further, without even giving a reason, deducting ten points right off the bat. It's simply unreasonable!" (End of Chapter)
