Chapter 505 Launching the Offensive, Operations Behind Enemy Lines
Chapter 505 Launching the Offensive, Operations Behind Enemy Lines
Before the cold air brought by the storm had dissipated, a deafening sound, like a giant hammering the atmosphere, shattered the silence.
First, the land began to turn red, then the rivers, soaked in blood, began to steam, like the prelude to a volcanic eruption, with crimson veins spreading along the deliberately created gaps in the long defensive line.
Then a torrent of scorching heat burst forth, spreading outwards in a cone shape.
“waaaagh!”
The green-skinned creatures that were still charging vanished in an instant, enveloped by dense particles of light that heated everything within range until they were ground to dust, along with their voices.
To an ordinary person, it appears as if a static band of light can be seen.
Time seemed to stand still at that moment.
Boom!
The counterattack only ended when the first explosion rose on the horizon and the overloaded first general's cannon was pulled down.
The enemy vanished without a trace. Beneath Alexander, soldiers surged into trenches and artillery positions along the bridgehead and the banks of the wide, deep valley adjacent to the bridge. Armored forces, led by various assault teams, crossed the crimson land and launched an attack from the west towards the subcontinent of Amegidotton.
What followed was a barrage of artillery fire that resembled a constellation of stars in the sky.
The counter-fire began to erupt from the turrets positioned along the edge of the airport, and a dense hail of bullets rained down from the trenches.
Looking down from the sky, golden flowers bloomed one after another, like a barrage of firecrackers, spreading all the way to the horizon and destroying everything in their path.
But the aerial formations couldn't linger too long in this beautiful sight.
Alexander knew that this brief moment of grandeur did not belong to them, and he had to leave the area. He looked back at the magnificent outline of the hive city behind him, but only for a moment before he began to fly with the formation, leaving the sprawling mountain flowers behind.
This place doesn't belong to them.
Their battlefield was in the rear, beyond the horizon.
The roar of engines gradually replaced the incessant artillery fire behind them. Alexander moved forward with exhilaration. Their formation, under the cover of clouds, crossed the Chiron River and the Greenskins line behind them, passing through the ocean that had been evaporated by the war and tectonic uplift, no longer separating the main continent of Amegidon from the subcontinent.
hum~
He first heard the sound, then immediately adjusted his vision and saw several green-skinned fighter jets flying towards him.
"Prepare for impact!"
Alexander shouted.
The Valkyrie is considered an excellent weapon capable of combat in all environments. While the paratroopers in the cabin were still trying to figure out which direction the enemy planes were coming from by listening to the sounds, he had already located the direction of the enemy planes.
The Valkyrie rapidly slowed down, climbed up to avoid the Green fighter jet attempting a sneak attack, and unleashed an air-to-air missile, turning one of the Green fighter jets into a torch at close range.
But Alexander was not excited by this minor victory.
He quickly led the squadron down and out of the clouds.
The moment the fleet emerged from the clouds, a dense network of anti-aircraft fire quickly formed in the sky.
Alexander pressed down again, almost throwing the thin young man out of the cabin. Fortunately, he had fastened his seatbelt, and the power armor and the bayonet collided hard.
The fighter jets behind him also hoped to turn like Alexander, but in the blink of an eye, a green rocket-powered jet crashed into their fuselage and they were torn to pieces in the explosion.
Above were swarms of green-skinned fighter jets and rocket-powered lads riding on inferior rocket fuel, daring to fly towards the fighter formation; below was a dense, spiderweb-like air defense force.
The green-skinned soldiers seemed to never care about their own casualties; all they cared about was the excitement of blasting the endless stream of warplanes that were breaking through the clouds and gradually dropping troops onto the ground into flames.
Even though the latest Valkyrie models are equipped with deflection shields, Alexander doesn't think they can hold out for long.
He continued to lower his altitude, using his superb skills to buy himself some breathing time by taking advantage of the towering and broken structure of the ground.
After a brief hesitation, the pilots, led by Unit 5, gritted their teeth and followed Alexander, ignoring Unit 4 which had been forced to leave the formation. They also descended with Valkyrie 1, which was being controlled by Alexander.
The enemy's strafing fire suddenly concentrated on the No. 4 aircraft, which was unable to land in time, and the scattered pressure immediately concentrated on it.
The paratroopers inside the cabin were all veterans. Seeing that the plane was about to crash, they opened the cabin door, opened their parachutes, and jumped directly from a height of 5,000 meters, leaving only the pilot of Valkyrie No. 4 behind.
Three of the paratroopers who had just jumped out were immediately hit by bullets. Even with power armor, they were blown apart on the spot. Valkyrie No. 4's shield also reached its limit. The cockpit was pierced by a Deadly helicopter equipped with a chainsaw, which spread out from the middle.
As the enemy's firepower faltered, Alexander caught a glimpse of the five surviving paratroopers out of the corner of his eye. Their position was quite good; they had landed in an area where the green-skinned soldiers were not particularly dense.
How can we determine this?
Because those people didn't die instantly after falling.
"Crew! Crew!"
Alexander pressed the broadcast button and quickly marked the landing area.
"This is Alexandria. Prepare to jump! Prepare to jump!"
He led the squadron in a swivel descent that was almost touching a mountain.
The Empire's atmospheric fighters have an extremely exaggerated maneuverability. Normal aircraft, even gyroplanes, have a turning radius of several hundred meters, after all, their speed is what it is. But the Empire's are different. Not only can they fly at a height of more than ten meters close to the ground to provide precise firepower, but they can also force maneuvers by relying on thrust. The only test is the pilot.
The Valkyrie cut along the mountain range, descending nearly a thousand meters in a second, leaving her only a few hundred meters from the ground.
The co-pilot immediately pressed his eyeballs to prevent them from popping out.
bump!
The Valkyrie's fuselage opened, and a gust of wind rushed in instantly.
"Jump, jump!"
The team leader, Caroline, quickly grabbed the recruit from Hades's Nest City, made sure his parachute was engaged, and then pushed him down. The other paratroopers followed suit, kicking down a series of supplies and fortifications before Caroline herself jumped down.
The gravity parachute deployed, disappearing into the misty atmosphere. Clutching the supplies tightly, she plummeted toward the direction where the paratroopers were concentrated.
Rumble!
Another squadron of enemy planes followed.
Having confirmed that the paratroopers and supplies had been deployed, Alexander ordered a maneuver at roughly the same time as before, quickly leading his squadron to pull the pursuing green-skinned air force away.
-
Boom!
Something heavy fell to the ground.
"This is number one! This is number one!"
Raising her hand to block a sneak attack from a fart demon, she straightened her arm and smashed it with a punch. Caroline pulled her leg out of a green-skinned corpse, deactivated her gravity umbrella, and quickly shouted to the server system:
"All paratroopers in the area, converge on me."
A series of responses came through the communication, and even the young man she had just thrown down, who was hiding behind the trench, raised his hand to signal her.
Wow~
A series of rubble rolled down, and a three-man squad with the number three painted on the edge of their helmets arrived near the outpost.
They are now down to three, with two fewer members.
They lacked engineers, but fortunately, the remaining three, except for the leader, were all Exterminators, capable of providing considerable fire support.
An airborne unit typically consists of one commanding sergeant, one dueling champion, two soulless individuals, two engineers, three exterminators, and five ordinary personnel.
The Extinction Ones are designed to be comparable to Space Marines and are equipped with phosphine and radiation weapons.
"This is number four. Number four is requesting entry!"
"allow!"
Caroline gripped her combat dagger and severed the arm of a green-skinned creature hidden in the ruins. Then, using the power armor, she tripped it and plunged the dagger into its brain.
bump!
She quickly threw the body away, and the Exterminators in the squad immediately set it ablaze with phosphorus weapons, erecting a wall of fire around the outpost.
This forced another team rushing towards the stronghold to change direction.
"This is number five. Number five is requesting entry!"
"allow!"
Caroline quickly directed the engineers to set up a multi-layered protective net of refined gold, and then they began digging underground, while also setting up a volcano cannon powered by a special crystal that could fire continuously.
As Caroline and her team gained a firm footing, more and more paratroopers who had broken through the Greenskin blockade began to converge on their stronghold.
They spared no expense in assembling the heavy equipment they had gathered. These non-physical projectile weapons were much easier to assemble than kinetic weapons, and could create a massive amount of firepower with only a small number of operators.
This firepower is enough to attract the surrounding greenskins who are eager to fight. Their role is to disrupt these greenskins, using their intense firepower and superior military skills to draw in these war-craving monsters, like small holes in a pool, constantly absorbing the tide of greenskins and relieving pressure on the main force responsible for the assault.
As for the more powerful ones, those super-heavy armored giants who serve as the core commanders of the Greenskins, they are handled by more specialized personnel.
“waaaagh!!!”
The Stormbird, far larger than the Valkyrie transport plane, streaked across the sky, plunging into the green-skinned outposts spewing anti-aircraft fire with an even wilder ferocity. Scattered green energy fields exploded on the horizon, as if enraged by injury, and its terrifying roar sent chills down one's spine.
Fortunately, those who could become paratroopers were not people with low mental fortitude. They busied themselves unfolding the adamantite frame, inserting it into the ground, and using a hydraulic press to press the main body more than ten meters deep into the ground before pouring in liquid metal.
These metals can form a hard grid underground, strong enough to defend against conventional underground attacks.
So here's the question: what if it's unconventional?
Then let's give them the weapons. The fact that they can spare so many weapons to deal with these groups shows that the two sides are not on the same level at all. It's not a loss to die and exchange them for a greenskin.
bump! ! !
As the outpost was being deployed in full swing, a missile fired from the green-skinned soldiers greeted the paratroopers.
"Enemy attack! Enemy attack!"
Caroline looked up from under the bright red protective netting.
The smoke and clouds began to dissipate.
The curtain was drawn back, and they saw the enemy.
A dark green figure is emerging from the thin smoke ahead.
It was a large group of green-skinned soldiers, spreading out and marching forward with steady steps. The paratroopers could smell the fanaticism and ferocity emanating from the enemy, and feel their joy in pursuing war and killing.
The green-skinned creatures roared and cheered, still bearing the scars of their mutual attacks, but now they had finally found their match.
Fighting the big teeth isn't fun enough; fighting these shrimp cans is the real deal!
Caroline raised her hand.
There was no need to issue more specific orders; the elite paratroopers' formations ensured they could support each other.
The greenskins also began to accelerate, first walking briskly, then jogging, then half-hopping and running, and finally these greenskins also launched a charge, their heavy armored bodies splashing mud and shaking the earth.
Shield protects the body, sword held high, head bowed, weapon aimed.
The Imperial troops opened fire when they were still a kilometer away from the front of the gray-green monsters.
Explosive shells roared, incendiary weapons spat out flames, and the muzzles of guns flashed with a dark red light in the smoke. The green-skinned soldiers in the front row fell to the ground, some rolled to the side, some fell down, some were blown apart by bullets, and some were pierced through. Their tattered armor was blown away, and ashes, flesh, and bodily fluids were scattered all over the ground.
These greenskins, too, began to return fire, their distinctive psionic weapons flashing and roaring through the marching ranks—
Then it went silent.
Caroline glanced back, and the flames spewing from her weapon claimed the life of another big guy. The horrified farts that were attacking at its feet scattered and fled, only to be trampled into pieces by the surging tide behind them.
Looking at the soulless individuals assigned to the paratroopers, she vowed that she would never discriminate against them again.
Back during the Beast Wars, the Soulless proved their advantage against the Greenskins. Unfortunately, the shameful outcome of the Beast Wars led the Ministry of the Army to completely block the news, and not many people even knew that a Beast had once forced the Primarch to perish together with it.
The Greenskins charged forward fearlessly. Occasionally, the paratroopers responsible for defense around Caroline would fall, either dying completely or being knocked down by multiple Greenskin bombs that had raised the Storm Shield.
These green tides surging in from all directions covered the entire field of vision. The soldiers defending the stronghold didn't even need to aim; they took the enemy's life with each pull of the trigger.
The green-skinned soldiers advanced to within ten meters of the stronghold.
Just ten more meters, and it seemed the green-skinned army could wipe out this paratrooper force of only a hundred men.
But it was also less than ten meters long; the Imperial side's battle line was also running, and had already rushed into the enemy's territory.
With the clash of metal, the collision of mortar and scrap iron, the battle line was like a hammer and anvil in a thousand jobs, producing a huge sound that could be clearly heard even by the engineers building the offensive in the trenches behind the lines.
It does not include heavily armored giants, nor does it involve interference from green-skinned wizards.
Paratroopers, launching short-range counter-offensives, used the momentum of their charge to shatter the enemy's vanguard. They kicked at these towering aliens in the trenches, knocking down and trampling their opponents one by one, then finishing off the fallen enemies with stabs and bullets, using these corpses as cushions to disrupt the enemy coming from the rear.
Leading the charge were Caroline, a tall half-Qatachan, and a short but exceptionally agile young man from Hades. Together, they formed a trio that acted as a shield for the entire eastern region's forces against attacks.
Caroline was covered in filth, holding a gun in one hand and a dagger in the other, like a reef, a master duelist.
Before even engaging the enemy, the incendiary rifle, which she jokingly called "Lady" because of its complicated maintenance, had already killed eighty-eight enemy soldiers. When held horizontally in her hand, the weapon resembled a spear, with its tip spitting out a scarlet beam of light.
After making close contact with the aliens, Caroline held off the enemy formation, sidestepped the slashes, then stepped forward with her shoulder raised and slashed down with her monomolecular dagger. The green-skinned creature's polished cloak shattered like porcelain, its helmet was crushed like an eggshell, and the corpses were all flung into the humid air.
Just seconds later, her more ornate uniform, a symbol of paratrooper sergeants and more elaborate than that of ordinary members, was covered in blood splattered from her own combat skills, and the incoming blades were quickly deflected thanks to her agility and the power provided by her power armor.
His companion, jokingly referred to as half a Katachon, wielded a powerful greatsword, unstoppable. Countless shards of the sword were scattered around him, falling and churning in the mud. He sang a war song that seemed to come from the savage world of Katachon, each strike becoming more powerful.
Meanwhile, the clever young man organized a firepower network, with fierce energy weapons protected in the rear, constantly converting the energy inside the batteries into lethality, crashing into the green-skinned troops who were blocked outside.
Wielding radiation and phosphorus weapons, the Exterminators created scorching isolation zones behind enemy lines, simultaneously eliminating the piles of corpses to prevent the Greenskins from launching a high-ground assault on their stronghold.
The airborne troops formed a solid front that halted and repelled the Greenskins' advance, causing the enemy to trample each other in a vortex of eagerness and slaughter.
However, inevitably, this was accompanied by the fall of armored warriors, their bodies damaged and deformed.
The muddy ground was covered with a carpet of blood and flesh, and the air was filled with a heavy smell of blood, smoke and blinding flames. The brutal massacre was gradually shrouded in the smoke of battle.
The roar of gunfire grew fainter and fainter, and the clash of blades became increasingly hollow.
For every soldier, the world is tightly wrapped up, imprisoned in a lifeless space, low and numb. In this space, the loudest sounds are the harsh breathing from their own helmets, the buzzing of the servo system, and the sound of weapons hitting their armor.
But no harm.
They are the strongest force in the Astral Army, an elite force built from resources created by countless people.
They carried the expectations of countless people: the commanders of this battle, the craftsmen forging weapons in the rear factories, the people anxiously awaiting the outcome of this battle in the hive cities, and even—
Even the Primarch!
Their unit emerged with the military reforms, aiming to rival the glorious Kashejin Guard of Kadia. Armed with steel and faith, they were able to fight against enemies like the Greenskins.
Even if they are just ordinary people.
Eighty-eight, eight hundred and eighty-eight, eight thousand eight hundred and eighty.
The numbers became increasingly difficult to calculate, and the ashes of the corpses piled higher and higher, making people care more about the war itself, and fight against it with the same emotions as those laughing greens running towards death.
“wa——”
After an unknown amount of time, under the heavy weight of the slaughter, another tragic roar came from the sky. Caroline felt the enemy formation around her disappear.
Then she felt a flash of light.
It wasn't the flash of a weapon firing; that flash was broad and bright, dissipating the smoke and illuminating the entire killing field.
The greenery that had been obscuring our view has disappeared.
Caroline heard a sharp scraping sound.
Ashes were whipped up by the wind and rained down on them, bouncing off her armor and landing on the corpses around her, ringing like bells.
With a flick of her dagger, she finished off a large man clad in armor. After he fell backward, she quickly retreated, handing him over to the Exterminators to set on fire. She looked up at the sky.
The sudden temperature difference froze into chunks of dirty ice, covering her faceplate, which then crumbled into powder and gravel as the ashes were struck. The low sky churned with a faint but persistent light, and the green began to disappear from sight.
Silence fell over the surroundings.
The steel bushes, fluffed up by the explosion, swayed, and the howling wind whipped up dust.
She looked back.
Some people are panting.
