Chapter 267 The Space Wolf Proliferation Plan
Chapter 267 The Space Wolf Proliferation Plan
When the Wolf Pack's plans were discussed, Arthur gave Ramses a wink.
His fingertips tapped lightly on the table, the sound almost inaudible, yet it was like an invisible command. The surrounding dark angels immediately understood, their black boots retreating in unison, scattering like a tide.
They casually stopped a few of the wolf recruits who were peeking out, their thick arms held across their chests, unequivocally separating the crowd.
Seeing that only Logan remained in place, Arthur immediately deployed his domain to prevent any possible spying.
A colorless image appeared deep within Ramses' pupils, and fine rune chains faintly emerged in the air, completely isolating the conversation. The flow of time within the domain seemed to slow down, and even the flickering candlelight on the table froze into still golden teardrops.
Arthur then spoke:
"As far as I know, the most serious obstacle currently limiting Fenris's recruitment of soldiers is not your harsh trial environment, but the Spiral of Wolves and the werewolf transformation that is intensifying with Magnus's curse, right?"
Logan's eyelids twitched.
As is well known, there are no wolf packs on Fenris, only humans left behind due to mutations caused by ancient genetic modification surgery.
Before Russ arrived, Fenris had a pack of wolves as tall as a person roaming the snowfields, and legend has it that they even raised the wolf king.
As the complete Wolf Spiral was fully integrated into Fenris's body, and with the recruitment of space wolves, the variety of Fenris's giant wolves increased.
There are species such as the enormous black-maned wolf and the thunder wolf, which roams the ice cap at the northernmost tip of the planet and is infamous for its vicious and cunning hunting style.
They are not human!
In the Fenris people's understanding, once one degenerates into a wolf and fully embraces wild power, one is no longer considered human.
But people will become like them!
A flicker of pain crossed Logan's eyes as he recalled the roars locked deep within the temple, and the comrades he had to personally execute on those bloody nights.
This is the Wolf Pack's deepest secret, because the Empire has been extremely averse to mutation since its inception.
The mere thirst of the Holy Blood Angels terrified Saint Geres, who feared that one day the Emperor would destroy the Holy Blood Angels Legion in the same way he destroyed the two disbanded legions, not to mention the Space Wolves that could truly mutate into wolves.
Especially given the increasingly tense relationship between the Wolf Pack and various factions within the Empire, even the magnanimous Space Wolves would choose to destroy evidence to prevent malicious individuals from exploiting the situation.
However, it depends on who says that.
If it were another department of the Empire, the first choice would be to silence them; but if it were the Primarch, the nature of the situation would be different.
"Yes."
Logan finally spoke, his voice sounding as if it had been sanded.
He raised his head, his eyes meeting directly in front of the two Primarchs.
Since Ramses could recite the entire story of what happened on the day Bjorn was abandoned, then werewolf transformation, and even the Thirteenth Company, should not be any secret to them.
The question is, why bring this up at all?
Noticing Logan's calm demeanor, Arthur sincerely believed that their initial choice of positioning in the early stages of integrating into the Empire was correct.
With Perturabo's assist and his genuine Primarch status, his identity is now confirmed.
This greatly facilitated their operations within the imperial system.
If they were sector governors, traveling merchants, or high-ranking members of other chapters, they would be completely out of luck if they said that.
Go ahead and fight—
"The Space Wolves have proven their loyalty through their actions. There is no doubt that you have shed no less blood than any human being. Mutation is a disaster that we have to face because of the status quo, and you are also victims."
"If anyone tries to use this as an excuse to achieve their own malicious goals, then kill them."
Arthur began by stating his attitude.
This made Logan exhale deeply, and the knot in his chest seemed to dissipate a bit with these words. This showed that the Primarch did not classify the Wild Wolves as a group that needed to be guarded against because of the instability of the mutation.
In fact, the Space Wolves are not so worrying. Every single one of the tough guys who can survive the Mokai Trial without being controlled by their wild minds has maxed-out warp resistance, so the whispers of the evil god have little effect on them.
The few records of betrayal are still those of the Brotherhood of Wolves, who were wiped out by the Geneseed after the second founding of the army. They can be seen occasionally during Chaos Warband invasions.
"Therefore, there are three problems that Wild Wolves need to solve in order to expand their manpower."
Seeing Logan's expression soften, Arthur made a gesture, spreading out three fingers in sequence.
"First, the issue of new recruits and reserves. Because Lemanrus has made special modifications to the gene seed, only Fenris who have fully integrated with the Wolf Spiral can undergo the Astartes surgery to modify the Space Wolf."
Logan nodded in approval.
In fact, Logan's view of the Spiral of Wolves' development within the Chapter is that it does more harm than good. Many warriors who could have passed the trials failed because of this, and ultimately could only become beasts on the land of Fenris.
"Second, the problem of the werewolf curse. Because of the curse that Magnus cast on you through warp magic, the non-combat casualties among you have remained high and have been getting worse over time. Many of your units have had to be downsized."
Logan nodded again.
In the War of the Longfangs, Magnus killed the priests researching the 'Spiral of the Wolves' and also contaminated the gene pool of the Space Wolves, leading to an increased incidence of werewolf curses. This was an effect of warp magic, something the wolf priests couldn't resolve. "Thirdly, there's the issue of logistics. Fenris is a relatively industrially underdeveloped planet, and the Space Wolves have always been self-sufficient, maintaining a distance from most Imperial forces. Now that the Great Crusade is over, without the unified command of the Empire, Fenris cannot sustain an excessively large military force."
"Yes."
Logan's eyes hardened; the Primarchs had truly come to solve the problem.
These are the very problems that have been causing the Space Wolf to die a slow death.
I didn't really take it seriously before, but there is a problem, so it needs to be studied. Right now, Logan is pushing for the Perfect Wolf Project to solve the werewolf curse problem.
It doesn't matter if they're gone; it just proves that the Empire is getting worse and worse, their power is becoming increasingly strained, and they need Primarchs more and more.
This is why the time travelers had a good opinion of the Wolf Pack.
Although this group has a certain self-destructive tendency due to the legend, they will not deliberately sacrifice themselves or make the situation worse. They will do their best and leave the rest to fate.
If those crazy bastards from the Steel Hand, who could create a Slaanesh in the Warp, have a similar legend, then you can expect them to put on a spectacular show for you. You'll never guess how big of a show it will be.
"The logistical supply problem can be solved in the Dawn Sector. We will allocate a casting ship to Midgardia for construction, to house the Astartes-related equipment industry chain, and to be responsible for the technical training of workers in the Fenris system."
Arthur presented Romulus with the list that had been prepared long ago.
"Leave the werewolf curse problem to me; Pony is still no match for me in warp magic."
Ramses patted his chest confidently, saying that the Eldar advisors were already studying contingency plans; they were very familiar with these kinds of warp curses.
Logan's eyes twitched at the mention of that title.
If these two sides were to meet, they would probably start arguing on the spot just because of the way they are addressed.
"Then the biggest problem is recruiting new soldiers."
Arthur asked again, "I remember that in the past, Fenris was supposed to accept those with ambition, right?"
Those with ambition, those who come from outside the Chapter's homeworld and voluntarily participate in the Astartes Trials.
Such characters were not uncommon during the Great Crusade, including members of the Dark Angels besides Terra and Caliban.
When the Primarch still existed, the genetic seeds directly cultivated through the Primarch's tissues were all without defects, so the test of Astartes candidates naturally did not need to consider their birthplace.
"Correct."
Logan nodded, knowing that the other party was asking about his attitude and whether the chapter was prejudiced against members from other planets.
Fenris doesn't actually have this kind of germophobia. Those who can pass the trial are naturally one of his own. However, because of the genetic seed, he had to give up recruiting those who were willing to do so. Accepting them would only harm them, as 99% of them wouldn't even be able to pass the first surgery.
"We have the original genetic seed of the space wolf."
Seeing Logan's response, Arthur immediately handed over a long, rectangular box.
"You can have the wolf priests conduct tests. After removing the components fused with the Wolf Spiral, the changes should be minimal. We have a large enough reserve to fill the gaps in the initial recruitment of new soldiers by the Space Wolves."
Kaulna actually had a bunch of original Space Wolves, but considering how badly the Regent was criticized when he bought off original Astartes, no one brought it up.
After all, such a practice is indeed easy to offend people.
A battle group only has a thousand people at full strength. You just wave your hand and send thousands of people over. Isn't that blatantly squeezing out the voice of the veterans in the battle group?
Moreover, these people were all sent by Guilliman, and Caul deliberately chose progressives in the selection process. Their culture and ideology were also different from those of the various chapters, and their training was based on the more standardized Ultramarines, which resulted in everyone having a very Ultramarines-like style.
Before being placed under the Regent's control, Gabriel Seth spoke the minds of many chapters.
"These are a group of Ultramarines painted red. Has that lord finally succumbed to his ambition and decided to make all the chapters obey his orders?"
But the Regency was also in a difficult position. He couldn't send these people who had never experienced a real battlefield to their deaths, nor could he watch those old battle groups on the verge of annihilation die.
If he had simply turned his original intentions towards the eldest son's faction, wouldn't that have solved everything?
The original Space Marines were able to absorb the experience of the Firstborn, and the Chapters also enhanced their own power, enabling them to better cope with the escalating threats in the galaxy.
It was clearly a win-win situation, but everyone is criticizing him for being ambitious.
Honestly, from God's perspective, Guilliman was really wronged. He made a series of decisive and flawless decisions, but in other people's eyes, he was seen as 'ambitious' and had nothing good to say.
If it were Ramses, he definitely wouldn't stand for it; he'd let whoever wanted the regency position take it.
He looked at Arthur, who was patiently answering his questions, and breathed a sigh of relief.
The situation is not yet serious enough to cause a major rift, so we can take it slow and discuss the historical issues surrounding Kaul once trust between the two sides is established.
