Chapter 869 The White Wall
On the dark, abyss-like land.
The visiting delegation continued its journey.
We bypassed a black rocky ridge formed from solidified lava.
The fortress, which had stood firm despite being besieged by countless demons, finally broke through the pervasive sulfurous dust and appeared clearly on the horizon.
"Have we arrived? I think I can see it. That should be our destination."
Everyone looked around.
The massive Blood Pit Fortress is not a castle in the traditional sense; its main structure is full of traces of a powerful and orderly transformation of the original abyssal creations.
The cold, heavy metal structure is welded and cast onto the rugged, bizarre rocks and bone-like supports, creating an aesthetic that is both rough, practical, and powerful, a clash between savagery and order.
Defense towers stood tall, and the city walls were covered with gleaming machinery. Countless energy veins composed of runes were faintly visible on the surface of the fortress.
However, the most breathtaking thing was not the fortress itself, but the supple and enormous pale golden light curtain that bloomed in the sky above its core area.
It resembles a giant, inverted bowl, covering the fortress and a fairly large area around it.
The light curtain exudes a pure and stable power of order, guiding the magic of the surrounding environment.
It wasn't dazzling, yet it seemed to pulsate with life, blocking and purifying the chaotic abyssal energy.
The source of this light was the giant iron flower in the sky.
I heard that the Night's Watch has a very simple and easy-to-understand name.
Iron flower structure.
That's a very vivid description.
Even just at the edge of this light screen, Arian and the others felt a significant reduction in the constant, suppressed anxiety they felt, and their magic flow seemed to become smoother.
Is this the power of the "iron flower structure"?
They finally saw with their own eyes this wondrous creation, repeatedly mentioned in legends and intelligence reports, which was the very foundation of Blood Pit Fortress.
"I believe what those people said now. The Night Watch's power to dispel chaos seems to be much stronger than that in the fortress. Being so far away, I feel much more relaxed."
Their team members commented.
What they once thought were just boasts are gradually becoming reality as they get closer to Blood Pit Fortress.
Outside the fortress, some areas still bear the remains of enormous, horribly shaped demon corpses.
Some were piled up like small mountains, while others were burned into black crystals by energy.
Besides that, there was a thick layer of dust covering the ground. This dust, mixed with some liquid, spread across the earth, becoming heavy and no longer able to fly with the wind.
Even so, a gust of wind can instantly turn the visible environment into a hazy gray.
"Didn't they say that if the people here kill these demons, they won't leave any corpses behind?"
The dwarf in the group scratched his head, looking somewhat puzzled.
How come this information, which is least likely to be wrong, seems untrue?
"You idiot, you didn't even finish reading the intelligence, did you? It says that only the Night Watch, the retinue of that Venerable One, possess such power."
"Those Avengers who came to help and the mercenaries who came to assist didn't have that ability; didn't they already have corpses of the demons they killed?"
Upon hearing this, they were taken aback.
Including the team leader himself.
Because this means that those piled-up corpses were actually done by the resource avengers and mercenaries. How could they have such an ability?
The Avengers do not deny that they are a group of fearless Wild Hunt warriors, but the problem is that precisely because they are the Avengers, they rarely cooperate with each other on a large scale. They are all lone wolves, at most operating in small teams.
It is very difficult to achieve a good record.
Not to mention the mercenaries, they usually just play a supporting role.
But they killed so many demons here that they shouldn't have had the power to kill.
That suggests that the problem might lie in the environment here and the advantages provided by the Night Watch.
"Forget it, let's not think about it anymore. We'll find out when we get in. Anyway, we'll be staying here for a while."
Iron boots tread on the ground.
The ground was covered with charred, solidified lava and dust, mixed with varying shades of dark red markings, silently telling the story of an unimaginably fierce battle that had taken place not long ago.
But there's nothing to worry about.
Isn't every battlefield like this?
Go and see the land around the Bloodbath Fortress, the scars left by thousands of years of war.
As they get closer.
You can vaguely see Night Watchmen and some warriors dressed in various outfits moving around near the city gate, while some mechanical constructs that shimmer with energy are busy repairing the damage to the city walls.
The watchtower had already spotted them. Streams of magical light had swept over them, but they paid no heed and didn't trigger any alarms.
Perhaps they are just mercenaries and avengers seeking refuge.
Of course, it could also be a businessman.
None of this is surprising, as the flow of people to Blood Pit Fortress remains quite frequent after it became famous.
"Gods above..." Geron murmured unconsciously, his grip on the hammer handle tightening.
"That was... a miracle of the gods."
The mage's voice trembled slightly, his gaze fixed on the pale golden protective barrier. Even from this distance, he could sense the power of rules contained within it, a power that surpassed the legendary level.
Previously, I could only see it from a distance, and I could only feel the collision of the forces of order dispersing the forces of chaos.
But now we're getting closer.
They sensed more.
Sophia took a deep breath, seemingly trying to discern the pure aura of order within the light screen. Her face was filled with both longing and a slight, instinctive timidity.
After all, she was a half-demon, and she had heard that some extreme gods would not even spare beings like half-demons, even if they were allies.
Those extreme deities of order will purge all evil, including evil bloodlines.
This is a fantasy world where evil bloodlines can truly give birth to evil individuals.
However, it seems that this Venerable One is not like that now.
"Target confirmed, alert disarmament mode A. Prepare for contact." Node-07's electronic eye flashed with the light of data streams, recording every detail of this legendary fortress.
The messengers of Bloodbath Fortress finally stood before the Blood Pit Fortress gates, which had changed the entire landscape of the 1121st floor of the Abyss Battlefield.
Soon to step into a "Land of Miracles," personally protected by a newly born divine leader, where order is as solid as a fortress. A being to shatter this lifeless, numb atmosphere.
Exhaustion, amazement, and anticipation intertwined in their hearts.
The clamor of the abyss seemed to have temporarily faded away, and the fortress before them represented an unprecedented ray of hope on this eternal battlefield of slaughter.
Led by Erian, the delegation from Bloodbath Fortress finally set foot on the outermost edge of Blood Pit Fortress.
Contrary to their expectations of an orderly defensive line, upon closer inspection, what first came into view was... a towering barrier that could be described as a spectacle.
Inside that light membrane.
It's said that's not how it works. Didn't the Night's Watch build the walls of Blood Pit Fortress with some kind of metal? It was incredibly sturdy and covered in runes.
"This might be the outermost wall? Although it looks dilapidated, it seems to have been built recently."
Just as Arian and the others had suspected, the city wall had only recently been hastily erected.
The materials that make it up are like a hellish collage art.
The chaotic base, with its massive, twisted and crystallized demonic skeleton, formed after being struck by some powerful, ordered energy, serving as the main skeleton and filling material.
Huge, broken metal components—some resembling the remains of siege engines, others clearly forged in the style of hell or the abyss, with even the broken core shell of a furnace visible—were crudely welded together, filling the gaps.
The temporary external reinforcements, with solidified lava smeared on the joints, looked like ugly scars.
Huge barbed wire and barbed metal fences hung crookedly on the wall, clearly spoils of war that were reused on the spot.
The wall surface is covered with claw marks of varying depths, charred burn marks, cracks caused by frost freezing and breaking, and large patches of moss that have solidified into an eerie dark red color.
Despite being a "new" city wall, it exudes a tragic atmosphere of decay, bloodshed, yet tenacious resilience.
As described, this city wall does not pursue perfect defense, but only aims to be sturdy and durable, effectively slowing down, killing, and wearing down the charging waves of demons.
Even if partially damaged after the war, it could be quickly repaired using the "building materials" that were ubiquitous on the battlefield.
Therefore, the more rugged, simple, and practical, the better.
The massive city gates were wide open, allowing vehicles and people to pass through.
However, the scene around them was far from relaxed.
A simple watchtower with a steel frame stands close to the side of the city gate.
Just as the delegation approached within about fifty meters, a shadow flashed on the tower.
A figure, clad entirely in gray-black composite armor, with a mask obscuring half his face, moved with agility and silence, leaping precisely from a height of about ten meters like a hunting eagle.
It landed with a loud thud a few meters in front of them, kicking up a cloud of scorched earth and dust.
The impact of the landing stopped precisely in front of the team, without any unnecessary movement.
The guard's left hand rested on the hilt of the short-handled weapon at his waist, while his right hand hung naturally but remained poised to draw the weapon or activate the wrist device at any moment.
The eyes beneath the mask sharply scanned the four members of the envoy group, lingering on Sophia and Node-07 for half a second.
This made Sofia a little nervous, but the other party didn't seem to do anything.
"Stop. Identity? Purpose?"
The voice came through the mask, carrying a cold, hard quality like the friction of metal, simple and direct, without any formalities.
It looks reliable and efficient.
Arian stepped forward and placed his right hand on his chest in a standard interdimensional greeting.
"Order be with you, warrior. We are the official delegation from Bloodbath Fortress."
"I am Arian Silverleaf. I have come on the orders of the Fortress Commanders Council, carrying documents, to visit the leader of Bloodpit Fortress and to make initial contact regarding logistics and trade matters."
As he spoke, he took out a token badge made of special magic crystal from his pocket. It was engraved with the general emblem and authorization runes of the Blood War Fortress and emitted a gentle but stable fluctuation of order.
The dwarf Gron snorted and raised his rune-inscribed iron plaque, which represented his identity.
Sophia lowered her head slightly, carefully concealing her aura.
Node-07 remained silent, but its core light flickered steadily once.
The guard's gaze lingered on the badge and crystal token for a moment, as if confirming their authenticity and level of authorization.
He didn't touch anything, but simply nodded slightly: "I confirm receipt of the identity statement and purpose."
After saying that, he seemed to be momentarily lost in thought for a fraction of a second—clearly, he was reporting information through their unique internal communication channel, the Night Watch interface.
The channel message is delivered silently.
The guard has been restored. "Please wait here for a moment while we confirm your information and that our reception staff is on their way. Do not leave the designated area."
He pointed to a relatively flat, open area near the city gate. His tone left no room for argument.
The envoys stopped where they were told, and could feel several gazes fixed on them from the city walls and watchtowers, but there was no obvious hostility, only vigilance.
The air was filled with the smell of sulfur and the heavy stench of blood from the slaughterhouse in the distance. In the distance, one could also faintly hear the clamor of voices, the clanging of metal, and the hum of some kind of large machinery operating from inside the city walls.
The wait was short; about ten minutes later, the steady, rhythmic sound of hooves came from inside the city gate.
Upon hearing this sound, they pricked up their ears, for the sound of such footsteps reminded them of some rather peculiar race.
The sound of horses' hooves, a peculiar sound of horses' hooves.
A group of figures emerged from the middle.
The leader was a tall female centaur.
Her upper body was like a fairy formed from moonlight, with fair skin, a calm and delicate face, and long silver hair neatly tied back.
The horse's supple yet sturdy body had smooth, flowing muscle lines and was covered with a layer of light scales that gleamed with a cold, dark purple metallic sheen, upon which faint blasphemous runes flowed.
This is because the group's members are not weak; they easily sensed the source of Apis's power, which did not seem to be pure order.
They could also sense a force of order emanating from the other party, a strange mixture that struck them, with their keen senses, as odd.
But one thing is certain: the centaur lady in front of them is undeniably powerful. She has definitely reached the legendary level and is of a higher rank and stronger than their captain.
This centaur was none other than Apis.
Abbise was followed by two Night's Watch warriors, better equipped than the previous guards, with steady demeanor and silent movements.
Apis's gaze swept gently over the delegation. When she saw Sophia, a hint of understanding flashed in her eyes, but there was no rejection, only pure scrutiny.
Her voice was steady and clear, carrying a comforting power.
"Welcome, envoy from Bloodbath Fortress. I am Apis, here on the orders of Commander Lelia. Your identity has been verified, please follow me."
She turned slightly to the side, gesturing for them to proceed, her demeanor composed and professional. (End of Chapter)
