Chapter 864 Frontline
Iron Oak Plain.
"Narsa! Purify the area!"
Adam's instructions were concise and powerful.
He stood slightly higher up at the back, his hands enveloped in a dense blood-red light, rapidly constructing a complex spell model.
It wasn't meant to inflict damage, but rather a [blood curse], targeting the low-level clawed beasts behind the Soul Eaters.
"understand!"
Pocanasa's petite figure gracefully blocked Adam's path, her hands holding an alchemical emblem that radiated platinum light.
A warm, pure beam of light descended, rapidly spreading outwards from her center to form a small-scale "sacred land".
The purplish-black mist on the Soul Eaters collided with this domain, immediately emitting a sizzling burning sound and billowing smoke, and their movements became unusually sluggish.
Adam's curse fell just in time, plunging the affected Claw Beasts into chaotic self-destruction.
"Alchemy bomb! Area 4!" roared a Night Watch squad leader with a wounded arm.
"Received!" Without hesitation, a soldier from the kingdom removed a metal ball with a special energy-suppressing pattern on its surface, pulled the safety pin, and forcefully threw it off the city wall.
"Eat my precious purple dog poop!"
Buzz—Boom!
There was no earth-shattering explosion or fire, only a strong, visible spatial shockwave that suddenly spread out!
【Void Disruption Bullet】.
The energy shells on the surfaces of the affected void creatures instantly became unstable, flickering wildly like a faulty light bulb, their structure becoming loose, and some of the weaker ones disintegrating directly.
This is one of the latest achievements of the Night's Watch alchemy laboratory, which can greatly weaken the defenses of low-level void creatures.
Everyone who has used it says it is good.
The battle raged on amidst the buzzing of blunt weapons, the crackling of magic, the whistling of arrows, the booming of explosions, and the shouts and curses of comrades.
Sweat, blood, and gunpowder smoke mingled with the refreshing scent of the arcane purification barrier, creating the atmosphere of a brutal battlefield.
The tides crashed in again and again, leaving behind more purple ash and broken chips.
The defensive perimeter was as solid as a rock, and the light of the Steel Ridge Tower steadily illuminated the chain of this plain.
Adam looked around, tired but with sharp eyes.
Tokke replaced the quiver with a new one.
The flying squirrel caught its breath in the shadows, its eyes gleaming with the excitement of battle.
Eva tightened her arm guards, and Pokanasa wiped the sweat from her brow, giving Adam a reassuring smile.
Beneath our feet lies an impenetrable defensive line. Beyond the city, a roaring tide of death surges forth.
"Hold the line! Hold every meter!"
A loud voice rang out through the command chain, reaching everyone's ears; it was the commander of this front.
"They can't get in! Those in the back, prepare to rotate!"
The Night's Watch front trembled violently amidst deafening roars and magical shrieks.
A tidal wave of Voidclaws crashed into the dam built of magical energy barriers, adamantite plates, and flesh and blood, each impact igniting an even fiercer counterattack.
Adam's team remained steadfast in their positions, like rocks.
They are reserves for the Soul Guardian squad and need to hold out for an even longer period of time.
After all, the crashing of the void waves never ceases.
"Tokk, two o'clock, a new wave of Rippers!"
"Flying Squirrel, an infiltrator is sneaking in from your left!"
Adam's instructions traversed the howling storm.
Tokk's crossbow hissed as the enchanted bolt pierced precisely through the weak point of the magical barrier, pinning a Void Ripper in its burrowing form to the crystallized ground.
With a strange cry, the flying squirrel even muttered the name of its skill. Its figure transformed into a fleeting black shadow, and the "Shadow Erosion Blade" in its hand deftly severed the energy core of an invisible infiltrator that was trying to bypass the shield wall. It looked like a pulsating purple crystal.
The sacred land maintained by Pocanasa steadily enveloped Adam and herself.
Eva, like a cheetah in the night, wielded her twin blades with incredible speed, clearing away any stragglers on the edge of chaos. Each dodge and cut was accompanied by the crisp sound of flying crystal fragments.
The ground beneath their feet was no longer a city wall, but was covered with a thick layer of shards and ash that crunched underfoot.
Occasionally, a void creature's core would be destroyed, instantly turning into ashes, leaving only a brief flash of energy and the pervasive smell of sulfur.
Some also left behind some remains, which were no different from rubble. Due to their large quantity, they covered the city walls with a thick layer.
Although the 24-hour offensive never stops, the wave sometimes subsides during certain punitive phases.
As the tide receded, it left behind a mess of purplish-black crystal shards and several pools of foul blood emitting corrosive fumes.
Tokk panted as he changed the quiver. The bowstring was slightly hot from being pulled so often. The flying squirrel shook his arm, and dark purple energy flowed from the torn corner of his cloak.
Eva leaned against the cold inner wall, licked her chapped lips, and her sharp gaze continued to sweep across the front of the defense line.
The beads of sweat on Pokanasa's forehead glistened in the light of the Steel Spine Tower; she looked like a child and shouldn't be here.
Adam took a deep breath, the stench of blood mingling with the fresh scent of lingering purification magic filling his lungs. His crimson pupils swept over his exhausted yet resolute companions, as well as his fellow warriors around him, all covered in blood.
Just then, a heavier tremor, originating from the earth, came.
Many veterans immediately sat up and looked into the distance.
Everyone's gazes instinctively turned to the area within the defensive perimeter, the area that had long been abandoned and was the source of their defenses.
That area has long been eroded by the void, a place that cannot be taken back even if one wanted to.
Looking towards the source of the sound, the once plains have long since changed.
The cracks resemble hideous black scars, crisscrossing and seemingly bottomless.
These cracks are not natural; their edges are sharp and twisted, constantly oozing a viscous, deep purple energy liquid that emits a nauseatingly sweet odor.
That was the earth's energy, which turned into this nauseating stuff and poured out.
The liquid dripped onto the undried parts of the ground, making a sizzling, corrosive sound and forming more tiny clusters of purple crystals.
Purple, dark black, and even sickly green crystals grew wildly like thorny vines.
They are eroding the ruins and remains.
The twisted and deformed steel bars resemble tentacles wrapped in crystal nodules, and the concrete debris is covered with a thick crystalline shell, with eerie prismatic light shimmering at the edges.
A dilapidated stone wall, mostly swallowed by writhing purple crystal veins, looked as if it had been infected with some kind of petrifying plague.
There may have once been a fortress here, but now only these remain.
Crystal clusters are not static; they pulsate and grow imperceptibly, like living things breathing.
Besides the earth, the air seemed polluted, filled with a pale purple mist.
Light refracted through the mist and crystals, casting hazy, chaotic spots of light on the ground and broken walls. There was no sound—except for the distant roar of battle, which was distorted into a low, mournful wail.
The deathly silence contained a suffocating sense of oppression and decay.
The breath of life has vanished, leaving only a pure, frozen, and destructive beauty.
Suddenly!
Two terrifying pressures, capable of freezing one's bones, surged into the sky from the two deepest rifts within the defensive line!
"Buzz—!!!" "Whoosh—!!!"
Accompanied by a low hum as if space were being torn apart and a malicious roar, two enormous figures, composed entirely of twisted crystals, slowly rose from the purplish-black fog of the rift.
It eventually hovered in mid-air, recklessly radiating legendary destructive energy.
【Cracked Crystal Tyrant】.
Its shape resembles a mountain giant crudely stacked together from countless huge, irregular, rough dark purple and gray-black crystal blocks.
It has no obvious head, only three pairs of diamond-shaped compound eyes burning with solidified purple flames and constantly rotating at the top of the "torso".
The limbs were twisted and deformed. The left arm was a huge, spiked, battering ram-shaped crystal, while the end of the right arm was torn open, with dozens of whip-like and knife-like crystal whiskers extending out, each of which shone with a black light that could cut through space.
On its massive chest and abdomen, the crystalline structure constantly shattered and reformed, emitting a continuous, teeth-grinding "crackling" sound. Each shattering ejected sharp, high-speed crystal fragments.
The other one on the other side.
Twilight Weaver
Its body is much "slender" than the Crystal Tyrant, yet it appears even more bizarre.
The main body is composed of thousands of thin, semi-transparent, deep purple energy crystal threads, which are constantly intertwined, woven, and disintegrated, resulting in countless changes in form.
Sometimes it resembles a giant spider made of light threads, and sometimes it resembles a swaying crystalline mist filled with eyes.
In an instant, it can coalesce into a spiraling, piercing purple spear.
It has no fixed core; the core seems to be dispersed among the thousands of crystalline strands that make up its body.
Silent and still, but with each change in form, the surrounding purple mist and whispers of the void intensify, causing those who look directly at it to become disoriented.
The arrival of these two legendary beings instantly plunged all the void creations on the battlefield into a state of complete berserk frenzy!
Behind the defensive line.
Inside the makeshift steel command camp.
"Two energy level peaks detected! Coordinates located inside the restricted area!"
"Energy map match failed... Not a known legendary!"
"Regional environmental readings have skyrocketed! Pollution concentrations have increased by 300%!!"
"The activity parameters of the void creatures on the battlefield have surged—exceeding the warning threshold!!!"
"Warning! A high-intensity energy field has covered the war zone! Energy field level... confirmed as two separate entities, energy level reading confirmed! Level 11! Legendary Void Creature!"
The operator was practically screaming out every data point.
The previously relatively stable monitoring crystal screen was instantly covered by a blinding crimson light in the core area of the defense line. A massive amount of data was refreshed like a waterfall, and the shrill wailing of the alarm instantly brought the tension of the entire camp to its extreme.
“By the Holy Light…” A staff officer looked at the two huge, constantly jumping red dots framed by special markings on the screen, his face turning ashen.
"Two...appeared at the same time...right at the opening of the fissure."
The last pair were killed when they were setting up their defenses. The level 11 legendary expert who was responsible for killing them is still suffering from the debuff.
Legendary Void creatures leave behind wounds and contamination that are difficult to remove and take time to heal.
"chief of staff!"
The adjutant looked urgently at the old dwarf officer, Roderick Ironbeard, who was standing in the center.
"Legendary Void creatures named 'Crystal Tyrant' and 'Twilight Weaver' are activating the enemies across the entire battlefield!"
Chief of Staff Ironbeard's face was taut with bulging muscles, and the pipe he was smoking had long since gone out.
His cloudy eyes, weathered by countless battles, were fixed on the two calamity red dots on the holographic map, his calloused fingers pounding heavily on the tactical platform.
"Order! Level 10 Night Watchers at the front! High-value legendary targets have appeared in the core area of the defense line! Lock onto them!"
"Notify the Soul Guardian squad, tell them about our location and get them ready."
"Activate the emergency plan 'Rock Solid,' abandon long-range suppression fire coverage of the core area, and avoid escalating the conflict with Legends."
"All outer perimeter troops, strengthen defenses. We must not allow more enemies to flood into the restricted area, thus freeing up battlefield space for the Soul Guardians."
"Notify all frontline squads: the Legendary One has appeared, and the Void Creatures have entered overclock mode. Hold your ground and defend to the death!"
"The Soul Guardians are divided into two groups. At all costs, we must keep them pinned down in the core area. We cannot allow their fighting to spill over into the main fortifications. Their destructive power... let them be worn down by fighting amongst themselves."
Roderick's voice was hoarse yet resolute, each command carrying immense weight.
Intelligence and tactics were integrated and disseminated instantly.
Frontline, eye of the storm
On the city wall, Adam and the others instantly felt an unprecedented change.
They had only been here a short time and had not yet experienced the changes in the Void creatures that had occurred before when there were legendary Void creatures, so they could not know what the enemy's commotion meant.
Fortunately, there were veterans nearby, so they weren't completely ignorant.
The void creatures that had just been repelled seemed to have been injected with an alchemical enhancement potion. Their eyes blazed with purple flames, and their movements became more than twice as fast. They completely disregarded their own losses and launched a frenzied attack.
These void creatures are completely insane, even though they don't really have any brains.
Some low-level void creatures that were originally dormant or had just condensed seemed to be catalyzed by an invisible force, instantly taking shape and joining the impact.
The whispers in the air became sharp and piercing, like millions of steel needles stabbing straight into the brain.
This is an attack on the spirit, and it has been amplified as well.
Even experienced Night's Watch veterans felt the pressure increase several times over.
Tokk's arrows were frantically dodged and blocked, and due to the mental pressure, he also began to deviate from his attacks.
The flying squirrel's shadow attack was forced back by her keen senses. Eva had just killed one Claw Beast when another roared and rammed into her.
Pocanasa felt as if her purification domain was being torn apart by countless invisible hands and destroyed by the power of the void.
While they have the potential to become part of the Guardian Squad, they haven't reached that level yet.
"Damn it! Those two big guys!"
Tokk roared and drew his bow again, the crossbow bolt whistling as it pierced the core of a berserker demon charging toward the shield array.
"They've driven the scum crazy!" The flying squirrel tumbled awkwardly to avoid a crystal spike that suddenly burst from the ground.
"It's like stirring up a cursed beehive!"
Pokanasa gritted her teeth and tried to expand the range of the holy light, but her pale face showed that she was exhausted.
A cold glint flashed in Adam's eyes, and crimson light gathered between his fingers. "Keep the output going! They are the source of legendary pressure... The Soul Keepers will act!"
As soon as they finished speaking, two powerful and sharp wills rose from behind their heads, like two swords tearing through a storm. (End of Chapter)
