Chapter 1000 Eternal War
The 1121st floor of the abyss, at the edge of the scorched bone wasteland.
The "Stone Defense Line," an ironclad defensive line constructed by the Order Alliance, stands like a lurking behemoth beneath a blood-red sky.
The air was thick with an overwhelming, pungent smell of burning sulfur and fresh blood, making it suffocating.
On the defensive line, the walls covered with metal armor gleamed with a cold luster, and countless runes flowing with orderly energy flickered on their surface, forming the first barrier to contain chaos.
The Heart of the Furnace turret's thick barrel radiates a destructive arcane glow, and the floating tower hovers high in the sky.
Layer upon layer of aura of resilience and mental fortifications cascaded down, soothing and protecting the guards' tense nerves, suppressing the ever-present whispers of temptation from the abyss.
Between the crenellations of the city walls, the Night's Watchmen, clad in their signature silver-grey armor, stood with sharp eyes and calm expressions.
The approaching demonic tide seemed insignificant to them, or perhaps they were already used to it.
The dwarven shield bearers stood shoulder to shoulder, their heavy rune tower shields forming a steel forest, ready to rush up and support their companions at any moment.
The minotaur heavy warriors gripped their giant axes and warhammers tightly, their heavy breaths exhaling white mist. The minotaurs were a unique unit type on this level.
The elven archer's slender fingers rested on the bowstring, the magic-piercing arrow gleaming coldly.
Elf archers were the fewest, as most of them were already covering the city walls with ranged attacks.
The Avengers' figures loomed in the shadows, like cheetahs poised to pounce.
All eyes were fixed on the rolling darkness beyond the defensive line.
Beyond the defensive line lies a tide of destruction.
The torrent of demons converged in a chaotic and violent manner.
At the very front were countless inferior demons and cowardly demons. These twisted and filthy creatures constituted the absolute majority of the demon army, accounting for more than 60% of the entire demon army.
They brandish rusty blades and deformed claws, emitting meaningless roars and shrieks, their eyes filled only with a primal desire for killing and destruction.
Their sole mission is to overwhelm the defenses with their flesh and blood, exhausting the defenders' arrows, ammunition, and stamina.
Behind this ever-surging, churning black tide of cannon fodder stands the true backbone of the demons.
The towering, ferocious berserker wielded a burning giant blade, the cunning Flo demon circled low in the sky looking for an opportunity, the horned demon overseer drove cannon fodder, and a swarm of winged demons covered the already gloomy sky like dark clouds.
These powerful killing machines were not all stationed at the rear. A significant portion of them were mixed in with the cannon fodder, positioned slightly further back, waiting for the cannon fodder to wear down the defenders' first wave of the most intense long-range firepower before swarming in and tearing through the defenses.
Meanwhile, the commander's orders spread throughout the defensive line.
The anger of the forces of order was the first to erupt.
The Heart of the Furnace turret roared deafeningly, unleashing massive holy light shrapnel that transformed into a destructive rain of light. Wherever it passed, the demon horde was instantly vaporized and annihilated, like cheese branded with a scorching hot iron, leaving behind charred, smoking craters.
The dense arcane beams, like the needles of death, precisely pierced the heads and chests of demons one after another, blasting their fragile bodies into fragments.
The magic bullet launchers on the city wall wove together a dense network of fire, the explosions creating a continuous burst of light, and the shockwaves tore apart and blew away swathes of demons.
The elven archer's magic-piercing arrows tore through the air with a sharp whistle, precisely embedding themselves in the eye sockets and throats of the horned demon overseer, instantly killing the demon commanders who were trying to maintain order.
The mage's group spells—Ice Storm, Chain Lightning, and Wall of Holy Flame—smashed down like divine punishment, creating waves of blood, flesh, and severed limbs in the sea of demons.
"Aww—! That damn bald monkey!"
"Ouch! It's burning hot!!"
"My arm! My leg! Ah—!"
"Tear them apart! Charge! Stomp those tin cans!"
The cannon fodder demons suffered an unprecedentedly fierce attack.
Terrified screams, angry roars, and dying wails mingled together.
Demons are not without fear, especially these lower-ranking demons.
They were both insane and ignorant, both bloodthirsty and cowardly.
This perfectly illustrates the paradox of chaos.
The demons that were charging forward frantically one second were blown to pieces the next, or burned into a charred, curled-up mass by the holy light.
The filthy blood, mixed with fragments of internal organs and severed limbs, instantly turned the scorched earth into an even deeper and more terrifying dark red swamp.
The Order's first wave of long-range coverage was as fierce as an iron plow cutting through a swarm of insects, instantly clearing a huge gap in the vanguard of the demon tide.
However, there were simply too many demons, so many that it was despairing.
Even after suffering such terrible losses, the demons surging from behind were like an endless tide, instantly filling the gap.
Treading over the charred corpses and scalding blood of their companions, they howled even more frantically, ignoring the fallen brethren around them, and with even greater speed, slammed their bodies against the steel walls of the Rock Defense Line.
"Get up there! Climb up! Plucking those weak insects off the wall!"
The berserker warlord roared from the rear.
Countless lesser demons and horned demons began to frantically climb the city walls.
It seemed that the waves of their kind that had just been wiped out did not frighten them.
This is the devil.
When one is near death and suffering, one experiences fear, but the fear of others does not spread to other beings.
However, on the metal armor covering the city walls, the burning runes of order, which shone with divine light, lit up instantly.
Like a red-hot iron touching rotting flesh, a piercing sizzling sound accompanied by a burning stench suddenly rang out.
"Aaaaaah—! It's hot! It's so hot!"
"Scum of order! This light is burning my claws!"
"They've fallen! Get out of the way—!"
The climbing demons let out extremely shrill screams.
The parts that came into contact with the runes instantly tore open, emitting blue smoke. The intense pain made it impossible for them to hold onto the smooth metal surface. They fell down like dumplings being dropped into a pot, crashing down at the foot of the city wall, piling up and making a dull thud as if bones were shattering.
"Now's the time! Give these abyssal bastards a 'fire oil bath'!"
A dwarf shield captain, his face covered in gunpowder and his beard braided, roared.
The Night Watch warriors and human soldiers behind the battlements immediately picked up the huge terracotta pots.
It was filled with grease, a byproduct of alchemical furnaces, a viscous, highly flammable, and produced magical waste in large quantities.
They hurled the oil bottles with all their might at the densely packed mass of demons below the city walls!
The earthenware jar shattered, splattering black grease everywhere, instantly soaking the demons below who were huddled together and unable to move.
Immediately afterwards, several fire serpents were launched from the mage's hands, accurately striking the oil slick.
"boom--!"
A deep blue magical flame suddenly erupted!
In an instant, a wall of fire, several meters high, was formed at the foot of the city wall.
The demon, consumed by the flames, let out a wail ten or even a hundred times more miserable than when the runes were being burned. It twisted and struggled wildly in the blue flames, eventually turning into a charred skeleton and billowing smoke.
"Ugh!"
"It's so hot, I'm going to melt."
"Painful, sweet!"
A pungent, acrid smell, mixed with the stench of burning demon bodily fluids, rose into the sky. Thick black smoke billowed and rolled, completely obscuring the entire section of the city wall and blurring the view.
Only the eerie blue flames flickered in and out of the black smoke, radiating deadly heat, temporarily halting the subsequent climb of the demons.
"Roasted bugs! Haha! Let's teach you to crawl!"
The dwarven shieldbearer laughed heartily and tapped his shield with his warhammer.
Seeing the miserable state of these demons truly pleased them, to the point that they were able to laugh heartily.
"Scum! You demon bastards! The cesspool of the abyss is your true home!" A human Night's Watch warrior spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva.
"Feel the purification of the flames! In the name of order!"
His cold tone carried a sense of cathartic satisfaction.
Below, the demons, not yet completely dead within the sea of flames, uttered their final curses amidst the fire: "I will devour your souls, you worthless scum..."
"Wait...wait until we get up there...we'll tear you...to shreds...and devour you alive..."
The Demon Legion was not unprepared for this familiar flame-retardant tactic.
On this battlefield where blood and fire have clashed for countless years, both sides have long been familiar with each other's tactics.
What kind of scene haven't I seen?
"Frostblood! Advance!"
A command, accompanied by the sound of ice shards rubbing together, rang out from behind the demon.
A group of relatively tall demons, with sickly bluish-gray skin or covered in ice crystal scales, emerged from the chaotic army formation.
They come from the deepest, coldest abyss, and emanate a bone-chilling cold.
The abyss is chaotic; not all abysses are like this one, with orange-red skies and gray-black earth.
There are abysses that resemble deserts, and there are abysses that resemble extremely cold hells.
Within these different abysses, chaos can also give rise to demons that are suited to their environment.
Faced with the burning blue flame barrier, they opened their mouths and spewed out jet-black cold currents mixed with chaotic magic energy, or waved their frost-covered claws, condensing huge, ominous jet-black ice spikes.
"Sizzle sizzle sizzle—!"
A piercing freezing sound rang out.
The ice imbued with chaotic magic clashed violently with the burning blue magical flames, resulting in their annihilation.
The eerie blue flames dimmed and shrank rapidly at a speed visible to the naked eye, and the rising black smoke was suppressed by the frozen ice dust.
Even more deadly, the jet-black frost quickly covered the scorching city walls, not only extinguishing the residual heat of the flames, but also condensing a rough, cold layer of frost steps on the smooth metal surface.
"Lock onto those Frost Demons! Eliminate them first!"
The commander on the city wall shouted at the top of his lungs.
The beams of light from the floating tower, the elven anti-magic arrows, and the mage's precise fireballs immediately converged and poured down on the frost demons who were casting spells.
However, the main force of the demons was not entirely chaotic.
Under the suppression of the will of several demon lords, the berserker demons, horned demon overseers, and even some freaks with ranged abilities mixed in among the cannon fodder actively used their bodies or magical shields to block attacks for the frost demons.
"For the glory of the Blood God!"
"Break off their attack! Cover the Frostbringer!"
"Gah!"
The arrows were blocked by the broad demonic body, the fireballs slammed into the temporarily raised bone shield and exploded, and the spell beams were deflected by the swarm of winged demons diving down.
Although some Frost Demons still fell, howling and turning into icy fragments during targeted elimination, they successfully paved the way for the subsequent army to climb after paying a considerable price.
The rough, cold, frost-covered steps quickly connected the ground to the top of the city wall.
"There's a path through the city wall! Charge up! Crush them!"
The demon overseer's roar was like a battle cry.
"Roar--!"
The demon forces, which had been unable to contain themselves any longer, unleashed a deafening battle roar.
The Berserker Demons and Horned Demon Elite climbed frantically upwards, stepping on the ice steps and digging their claws into the cracks in the ice.
In the sky, the winged demon horde, which had been circling for a long time, let out a piercing shriek like vultures smelling blood, and suddenly swooped down, like a rain of black arrows, directly attacking the defenders on the city wall.
In terms of air force, the number of demons is indeed far greater.
A bloody, meat-grinding battle erupted instantly on the city walls.
The dwarven shieldbearers shouted, "Plug the breach! Hold on!"
The dwarf captain “Stonewall” Karl roared like thunder, and he and several of the strongest dwarf warriors around him slammed their tower shields into the ground, bracing them with their shoulders.
A berserker's burning giant axe slammed into the shield, sparks flying, and the immense force caused Karl's short, stocky body to slide back half a step.
"That son of a bitch is surprisingly strong!"
Karl roared and, using the recoil from his shield, thrust forward. At the same time, his dwarf comrade beside him skillfully thrust a sharp halberd through the gap in the shield and plunged it into the berserker's abdomen.
"Ow!"
The Berserker staggered back in pain, and Karl seized the opportunity, slamming the edge of his shield upwards into the Berserker's chin, the sound of bones cracking clearly audible.
"Ten o'clock! Two horned demons have broken in!"
The human ranger Lydia's voice rang out calmly through a whispered communication.
The longbow in her hand hummed almost non-stop, and arrows were fired precisely at the demons that were trying to attack the dwarves' flanks.
"Roger that!"
The wood elf Ereen emerged from the shadows like a ghost, her scimitar slicing two deadly silver arcs, instantly severing the feet of the two horned demons.
Just as they fell, the dwarven berserker Glenn roared and charged forward, his rune warhammer "Rockbreaker" crashing down with the force of an avalanche, smashing one of the horned demons' heads and half of its shoulder into a bloody pulp.
"Well done, sprite!"
Glenn grinned and roared, his blood-splattered beard trembling.
A large number of archers on the city wall continued to provide ranged support.
"Free fire! Prioritize the Winged Demon!"
The elven commander's voice was clear, cold, and powerful.
On a slightly higher platform behind the city wall, the elven archers stood in three rows, taking turns firing, their movements elegant yet deadly.
"Shhhhhh!"
A dense barrage of magic-piercing arrows rained down on the swooping winged demons like a silver storm.
Winged demons were constantly being shot through the wings, whimpering and falling in circles, or having their heads precisely pierced, crashing onto the city walls or falling into the demon horde below like kites with broken strings.
"For the glory of the moon goddess!"
An elven archer chanted softly, and the arrow he fired, glowing with the moonlight, pierced precisely into a Flomon that was attempting to cast a dark spell.
These elves are true elves, and their archery skills are unparalleled.
"Moo—! For the glory of Bloodbath Fortress!" A deafening roar resounded.
The Tauren Warchief "Crackhoof" Kaga, wielding the lightning-infused [Tortoise Pole], charged into a gap torn open by demons, like a moving fortress.
His heavy hooves pounded the ground, causing the surrounding demons to lose their footing.
Each sweep of the totem pole carried the force of a thunderbolt, smashing any horned demons and berserker demons that dared to approach away like sacks of potatoes, the sound of bones shattering echoing incessantly.
Several demons that tried to surround him were instantly cut down by the heavily armored minotaur warriors around him with their giant axes.
"Chief Kaga! Three o'clock, Abyssal Hounds!" a Night Watch sentry shouted.
"Leave it to me!"
Kaga roared, and the totem pole slammed into the ground. The violent shockwave, mixed with leaping arcs of lightning, instantly killed and charred the pack of attacking abyssal hounds.
The city walls instantly transformed into the most brutal killing field.
The roars of dwarves, the whistling of elves' arrows, the calm commands of the Night's Watch, the awe-inspiring roars of tauren, intertwined with the howls of demons, the clash of weapons, the explosions of magic, and the dying wails.
Steel clashed with flesh and blood, and the light of the runes of order annihilated the chaotic fel energy of the abyss.
The filthy blood of demons flowed like streams between the battlements, limbs and severed bodies were scattered everywhere, and the air was filled with the stench of rust, burnt flesh, and ruptured entrails.
Every breath felt like inhaling a scalding hot blade.
There is no room for retreat here; only the most primal, bloody battles of complete incompatibility.
Every inch of the city wall groaned in agony, every second saw lives lost. The line between order and chaos clashed repeatedly in blood and fire, transforming this abyssal front into a flesh-and-blood grinding mill that devoured life. (End of Chapter)
