Chapter 222 Unknown Connections

Chapter 222 Unknown Connections
The storage room was pitch black, with only blurry outlines visible. The corridor was slightly better, where one could barely make out human figures.

The group of people froze, all looking out the brightly lit window.

Just as I was about to ask what had happened, several gunshots suddenly rang out in the distance.

Ou Yang's expression changed drastically, and he thought to himself, "We're in trouble! Run!"

He first took care of two people outside the ward, and then just took down another pair. The two groups of people were not from the same group. Then, the power suddenly went out and gunshots were heard. He suddenly felt a sense of crisis, as if he was about to be shot by an enemy who jumped out from the shadows at any time.

Not only did they fire shots, but they also used tricks on Shoumi. Those unusual noises could very well attract rats lurking in the shadows!
Jiang Yuwei didn't think too much about it, but she knew the situation was critical: "Which way to go?"

"Let's go first!" Ou Yang pulled the hospital bed over and left.

Jiang Yuwei immediately followed, while the cleaning lady followed cautiously behind without saying a word.

She didn't want to stay in the storage room any longer. Whether the power was out or not was a minor issue; the three corpses lying inside and outside the door were the key reason why she dared not stay.

Before leaving, she accidentally kicked Hendry, and was immediately startled and flustered. She made the sign of the cross several times and apologized in her heart several times before she felt a little more at ease.

With the help of the light from the window, Ou Yang could barely make out the direction ahead, and he analyzed the situation in his mind as he walked.

The hospital had become a place of trouble, and the best option was naturally to leave immediately, but he still had a very uneasy feeling in his heart.

I can't explain why, but I just felt that the enemy hiding in the shadows wouldn't let them leave so easily!

Ou Yang suddenly stopped, and Jiang Yuwei accidentally bumped into his back.

She complained in a low voice, "What are you doing?"

Ouyang ignored her and turned to ask Aunt Susan, "Where are there any vacant rooms?"

The cleaning lady was taken aback: "Ask, ask me?"

"Yes, it's you!" Ouyang urged anxiously, "Any room will do!"

"There are empty wards ahead..."

"Lead the way, quickly!" Ouyang said.

"Ah?" The old woman was terrified, her feet seemed to be rooted to the spot, and she couldn't move an inch.

Ou Yang wanted to slap her twice: "Hurry up, the corridor isn't safe!"

The bewildered Aunt Susan finally came to her senses: "This way, this way!"

She jogged along, pushed open a door, and led the group into the empty ward.

The door closed and locked, and Ou Yang finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Aunt Susan asked anxiously, "Is it really safe here?"

Ou Yang casually comforted him, "In such a big hospital, no matter how many assassins come, they can't possibly walk through every room. The chances of encountering an accident are higher if they wander around aimlessly."

He wished he could grow wings and fly out of this hellish place, but given the current situation, there was likely a group of assassins hiding outside, and if he rushed out of the hospital, he would immediately die in a hail of bullets.

Hiding in an inconspicuous corner like a mouse is the wisest choice.

"The darkest place is under the lamp" is not some profound principle.

Aunt Susan patted her chest: "God bless..."

"Stop talking about God," Ouyang interrupted rudely. "Shut your mouth if you don't want to die!"

Aunt Susan was both frightened and annoyed, but she had to admit that the young Asian man was right and dared not lose her temper with him.

After much hesitation between refuting and compromising, she finally chose the latter and sulked alone in a corner.

The ward finally quieted down. Jiang Yuwei leaned close to the bedside and whispered to Zhu Yiming, "How are you feeling?"

Zhu Yiming grimaced, "The wound hurts terribly."

"Don't worry, this is normal!"

Both of them spoke very softly, and their voices were barely audible a few steps away, so there was no need to worry about revealing their location.

Jiang Yuwei really wanted to check her wound, but the ward was pitch black, and there was no way to do so.

Ouyang hid by the door, listening carefully to the sounds outside, regretting that he shouldn't have listened to the police officer's nonsense.

After Zhu Yiming's surgery was over, the chubby police officer did not leave immediately, but stayed with him the whole time until Ou Yang was cleared of suspicion by the police, at which point he apologized and left.

During this time, the fat officer reminded Ou Yang more than once that although the three of them had immunity, they still had to abide by the rules.

For example, in public places such as hospitals and schools, only police officers, guards and other personnel with special status are allowed to carry firearms, while everyone else is prohibited from carrying guns.

Even with exemptions, there are no exceptions.

Ou Yang almost laughed out loud in anger, and retorted without hesitation: "Officer, are you kidding me? This isn't before the pandemic. I don't need to explain the situation now, do I? How are you going to protect yourself without a gun? Rely on the police?"

"Of course!" The chubby police officer puffed out his chest without hesitation.

"Give me a break. You American police only fight crime, you don't even need to protect your own citizens. Why would you protect us?" Ou Yang shook his head repeatedly. There was no need to say anything more; you could tell what he meant just by looking at his expression.

The overweight police officer retorted dryly, "Not all police officers are so unethical!"

Ouyang solemnly responded: "I have more faith in the gun in my hand than in your promises!"

If it were an ordinary American, the chubby police officer could have reasoned with them, but these three Asians were foreign affairs personnel, and their superiors needed their help. No matter how unwilling he was, he could only lower his stance and plead: "At the very least, you should put the rifle away, right?"

The Mule State has relatively lenient gun control, but even with such a relaxed environment, it's not to the point where people can openly wander around hospitals with automatic rifles.

After considering it carefully for a while, Ouyang finally nodded in agreement: "Okay, I can leave the rifle behind, but only the rifle!"

The implication is that you must carry a pistol with you.

The chubby police officer was extremely annoyed, but there was nothing he could do: "Okay, but..."

"No buts!" Ouyang interrupted rudely.

When talking to foreigners, there's no need to be so tactful; being direct is more effective.

"What I meant was, please try to be a little more discreet."

“Okay.” Ouyang nodded.

So he put the rifle back in the car, carrying only a pistol.

At this moment, Ouyang had absolute faith in his M27 and was determined to get another carbine kit as a contingency plan, no matter what.

But that's all for the future. The key is how to get through this hurdle right now!
Ou Yang took out his phone and turned on the screen, the soft light dispelling the darkness.

All eyes turned to Ouyang.

Ou Yang quickly came to Jiang Yuwei's side and looked at Zhu Yiming on the bed: "If we leave the hospital now, are you confident that you can take care of Old Zhu?"

"No!" Jiang Yuwei shook her head without hesitation. Zhu Yiming felt rejected: "Seriously, aren't you even going to consider it?"

Ou Yang thought to himself, "Is this the important thing? Is this something I should be concerned about at this time?"
If Zhu Yiming hadn't been injured, he would definitely have retorted on the spot.

Jiang Yuwei: "I studied clinical medicine, not nursing. Doctors and nurses are not the same thing!"

Ou Yang was immediately at a loss. If Jiang Yuwei could take on the heavy responsibility of caring for Zhu Yiming, he could find a way to get a batch of medicine, leave the hospital with his companions, or even leave Kamed, and find a safe place to wait for Zhu Yiming to recover from his injuries.

Jiang Yuwei had no idea how to care for patients, and even if she left now, she would have to obediently come back later.

The ward fell silent; there was no sound from either side of the door. Ou Yang had no idea what was going on outside and was determined to stay out of the way.

About ten minutes later, the piercing sound of police sirens suddenly came from the street outside the building.

More than a dozen police cars quickly blocked the main entrance. Soon after, more police cars arrived and took control of all roads leading to the hospital. They began evacuating nearby residents and those in the hospital who were not affected by the attack.

But from beginning to end, not a single police officer stepped into the hospital; they simply set up a roadblock and kept shouting into the hospital.

This was the second time the hospital had been surrounded in one day. Fortunately, it had already been evacuated once during the day. Everyone who could leave or be discharged was not in the hospital, and there were far fewer people remaining there than usual.

Upon hearing the siren, Aunt Susan was overjoyed and suddenly stood up: "The police are here!"

Her voice was also very soft, but it drew death stares from Ou Yang and Jiang Yuwei.

Actually, you could have spoken by now, because the police were shouting at a very high volume, so even if you spoke a little louder, there would be no risk of being exposed.

Aunt Susan's expression froze: "Aren't we going out?"

“Of course not,” Ouyang said. “It’s safe here, why would we go out?”

Aunt Susan was struck dumb; the expression on her face was worse than if she were crying.

Ouyang added, "Let's just stay here and wait until it's completely safe before we go out."

Aunt Susan knew that Ouyang was right, but she had absolutely no trust in these Asians and her mind was filled with thoughts of how to get rid of them.

The arrival of the police brought Ou Yang some relief, but only a slight one. His nerves remained on edge as he kept a close eye on the situation outside.

It wasn't that he had a problem with the police, but it had been almost twenty minutes since the shooting started, and the police had taken so long to arrive. Who would believe there wasn't something fishy going on?
Having encountered a series of unexpected events, Ou Yang didn't have time to think too much before, but now he has the mind to ponder carefully—so far, there are already three known waves of assassins, and who knows how many more are unknown.

The problem is that the three of them only arrived today, less than twelve hours ago. What grudge could they possibly have that would lead them to go to such lengths as to hire someone to kill them?
Ou Yang thought back carefully and realized that he hadn't offended anyone along the way!

He simply couldn't understand why his side was being targeted.

interest?

Hatred?

Antisocial?
Orientalism?

But is it really necessary to spend such a huge amount of money?

Ou Yang couldn't figure it out, wondering if he had accidentally offended someone.

He suddenly remembered Aunt Susan and immediately decided to look for clues among the locals: "Tell me, has anything major happened here today?"

Aunt Susan gave me a "you're kidding me" look: "Does being attacked at the hospital count? That's twice!"

Ou Yang wanted to shake his head, but upon closer reflection, he realized that it was indeed possible.

Although the Americans he killed all deserved to die, their families might not think so, and the fact that the trio remained in the hospital wasn't exactly confidential information, so it's understandable that the other side hired someone to retaliate.

"What else?" Ouyang asked again.

“There was a shooting at the flea market and a street chase; seven or eight people died!” As Aunt Susan spoke, her gaze became increasingly uneasy.

She knew very well that the car chase was related to these three Asians.

Jiang Yuwei said in Mandarin: "Are these assassins in cahoots with those old Americans from earlier in the day?"

“That’s also possible,” Ou Yang replied in Mandarin.

"Could it be people from the New Eden?" Zhu Yiming suddenly reminded him.

Ouyang's heart skipped a beat: "That's possible!"

He felt ashamed for three seconds.

I was just thinking that I hadn't offended anyone along the way, but now that I think about it, it's a complete joke!

If the wealthy and powerful New Eden is pulling the strings behind the scenes, then hiring a group of assassins makes perfect sense.

"And another thing!" Aunt Susan suddenly remembered, "I heard that little Jason died."

Ouyang immediately recalled the attack outside the flea market, where those unidentified old Americans first killed Jason Jr. and his henchmen before chasing after them like mad dogs.

Upon closer inspection, there seems to be some unknown connection here!

He asked in surprise, "Who is Jason Jr.?"

Aunt Susan looked at him with disdain: "Young Jason is Old Jason's only son."

Ouyang's brows furrowed deeply: "Old Jason is very powerful?"

"Very powerful?" Aunt Susan chuckled. "He's the richest man here. At least half the people in Kamed work for him directly or indirectly. Even in the whole of Mule State, old Jason is one of the wealthiest people."

After a pause, Aunt Susan continued, "You think the reason Kamed is so peaceful is because old Jason is here!"

Ouyang was immediately at his wit's end. So, at least half of this huge Kamed belonged to old Jason?
That's quite a force to be reckoned with.

He immediately switched to Mandarin: "The more I listen, the more something seems off. Even if those people knew old Jason during the day, they definitely didn't know young Jason, otherwise they wouldn't have shot at young Jason... Those Americans must be outsiders. Could they really be after us?"

"It doesn't seem like it!" Jiang Yuwei felt something was wrong. "We were right there when they killed Jason. If they were coming for us, why didn't they shoot at us?"

Ouyang rubbed his temples: "There are two possibilities. One is that they're after Jason and have their eyes on us for some reason; the other is that they're after us, and Jason is just an accident! But I can't figure out how we are connected to Jason!"

"If you can't figure it out, then don't think about it anymore," Jiang Yuwei said. "In short, this Kamed is no good place. We'd better leave as soon as possible, the sooner the better!"

Ou Yang was even more annoyed: "We've come full circle again. We can't go anywhere until Lao Zhu recovers!"

"I'm fine!" Zhu Yiming insisted, trying to sound tough.

"Stop being stubborn. This isn't something that can be resolved with a few words. If you don't want to die, shut your mouth!" Ou Yang said irritably.

Jiang Yuwei hesitated for a long time before saying, "I can try, but the risk is very high."

“Even a bigger place is safer than staying here,” Ou Yang said. “Old Zhu, it’s not that I don’t care about your life, it’s just that staying here is more dangerous!”

"It's okay, I understand."

“Then it’s decided,” Ou Yang said. “Let’s get a batch of medicine for Old Zhu and leave as soon as possible!”
