Chapter 499 Clark is Clark
Chapter 499 Clark is Clark
Clark noticed Homelander's strange possessiveness as soon as he entered Vought.
In normal times, Homelander's image is no different from the Vought International's publicity and marketing for him: humble and polite, sunny and positive, without any bad habits or shortcomings, and treating everyone equally. Although his acting skills are a bit lacking, and sometimes he overacts, making him seem unrealistic, he can generally maintain his character.
The only time he shows emotional fluctuations is when facing the other heroes in the group of seven, but it's usually a superior-to-inferior attitude. Only when facing three people does he reveal a slightly different, more authentic side of himself.
Madeline, Maeve, and Clark, who recently joined.
His feelings for Madeline were almost obsessive, for Clark it was jealousy and disgust, but for Maeve it was a strange possessiveness.
The reason for this is probably that he only regards Clark and Maeve as "perfect humans" on par with himself. He looks down on most superhumans because even though they are stronger than humans, they are still crushed by him.
In Homelander's mind, Maeve was probably one of the few women in the world who could match him, so when he saw her chatting happily with Clark, who had just joined the team, Homelander's eyes were already a little strange.
“I still don’t quite understand,” Clark shook his head. “Homelander likes you so much, why didn’t you two develop a relationship?”
“You think there wasn’t?” Maeve replied, “We dated for a while, but I realized he wasn’t mature enough, so I broke up with him.”
"A childlike possessiveness, jealousy, a self-centered worldview, and a volatile temper."
Clark spoke Maeve's mind: "The worst part is that no one can control him physically, and the Vought Corporation has never thought about teaching him properly. So he grew wildly like a crooked tree that no one prunes, and became the giant baby he is now."
Maeve let out a long sigh.
It's so great! This is something she's always wanted to say but never dared to, or rather, something the entire Vought and the government authorities have always wanted to say but never dared to. Now, finally, someone can say it openly and honestly, and Homelander can't do anything about it.
"You're willing to break up, but Homelander probably doesn't have the idea of an amicable split."
Clark asked, "Is this why you're so determined to bring me into the Seven? So I can keep him in check?"
Upon hearing Superman's question, Maeve's palms involuntarily began to sweat, a rather unusual occurrence for her.
But the pressure of being seen through by Clark was immense, because the person in front of her was a superhuman even more powerful than Homelander, and she subconsciously wanted to avoid falling into a situation where Clark would become angry.
"Walter is now part of an eight-person group, an eight-person group that has set up a seat just for you." Her smile had a hint of ingratiation: "You are much better than Homelander, and Walter is giving you much better conditions, so what I'm doing is actually somewhat beneficial to you, isn't it?"
“No, that’s not what I meant,” Clark replied. “You’re not using me to harm anyone, but just to protect yourself, so I’m not angry.”
Looking at Clark's calm and composed face, Maeve suddenly realized that she had been overthinking things.
Clark Kent is not a Homelander; Clark is Clark.
"Aren't you angry?"
"If my involvement can make your lives a little freer, then I'd be quite happy."
"Do you have a girlfriend?"
"I have the love of my life, her name is Louise."
"it's a pity"
Maeve's smile relaxed considerably, and this time, it was a genuine smile: "Just kidding. It's not a pity, really. I also have someone I like, but I've never dared to let Homelander know."
"Is it a girl too?"
Maeve looked at Superman in surprise: "How did you know?"
“I’ve noticed that your heart rate and blood flow occasionally increase when you look at pretty girls on the street; that’s a sign of excitement.”
"Hey, you can't do that!" "Sorry, my abilities are gradually returning, and I'm slowly controlling myself so I don't look around indiscriminately."
"Let me reiterate, I was just looking, I didn't lay a hand on them, and I am loyal to them!"
"I understand."
After Maeve expressed her indignation, she suddenly realized that something was off about what Clark had just said: "Your abilities are recovering? Why 'recovering'? Have you been injured recently?"
“I’m just a little weak,” Clark replied. “I can’t tell you the specifics, but my body is indeed slowly recovering.”
"What if the Homelanders attack you now?"
"do not be afraid."
Maeve finally let out a sigh of relief. She walked to Clark's side, stared quietly at the street scene outside the window, and spoke after a long while.
"Clark?"
"what happened?"
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
The peaceful atmosphere by the window didn't last long, as Maeve's phone rang.
So she answered the phone.
"what's up?"
"There's an emergency that requires you to come. I'll go with you. Come downstairs and meet me."
"Okay, I'll be right there."
Maeve sighed, not because work bothered her, but because the person who called her was Homelander—and his partners usually drew blood; Homelander was used to killing criminals outright.
Two minutes later, the two arrived at the foot of a building.
"I saw you talking to Superman by the window upstairs?" Homelander asked casually. "What were you talking about?"
"It's nothing. I heard he recently got into a little trouble with Starlight and Madeline, and I was a bit curious, so I went to ask him."
Homelander sneered: "Superman never does anything right, he just meddles in other people's business."
"Aren't we heroes? Isn't saving lives the right thing to do?"
“When did you start saying such superhuman nonsense? Helping Madeline and Walter grow stronger is the real business. He came here and clashed with Invisible Man, Deepsea and (Madeline) Stivell all—if he weren’t a teammate, I would definitely teach him how to respect people.”
“You don’t care this much about the other executives at Vought International. You even told me last time that you absolutely hated Edgar.”
"Stan Edgar? That old man won't be CEO for much longer. His blood is as thick as gasoline, he's just a hair's breadth away from coronary heart disease. Ha. And Stilwell, her and that crying baby all day long—it's ridiculous, just a bunch of ordinary people, and we have to listen to them."
Maeve glanced at Homelander and knew who he meant by "we"—neither him and herself, nor all the superheroes.
The "we" that the people of the motherland refer to are actually just "I".
