Chapter 408 The Hearts of Old Friends Are Easily Changeable
Only a few seconds had passed, but for Corey, it felt like centuries.
"You can't teleport anymore?!" he asked through gritted teeth. "At such a crucial moment, you can't teleport?"
“I can teleport, but I can’t see anything right now,” Shauna replied. “I’m sorry, there are no lights in the tunnel, so I can’t do anything.”
"Damn it! Fuck! Fuck!"
The sound of sirens drew closer, and the police on the other side of the tunnel rapidly approached. The two men's escape was about to reach its end.
"Go! Shauna, you go first!"
Just then, Corey quickly opened the money bag and took out several stacks of cash: "I'll distract them, you drive away!"
After saying that, he immediately grabbed a few wads of banknotes from his clothes, scrambled off the bus in a panic, and ran wildly in the direction he had come from, leaving Xiao Na and the bag of money standing there.
"Is this what they mean by 'I'll go first'?"
Shauna sighed and started the car. The police car, of course, couldn't see Corey speeding through the tunnel; it was just chasing after the car Shauna was driving—which was exactly what they were tracking.
Crouching in a corner of the dark tunnel, Corey listened to the police cars chasing Shawna closer and closer. He felt a surge of elation, as if he had escaped a disaster. He knew that once Shawna drove out of the tunnel, the police cars would naturally follow.
At least I can keep the money from the clothes.
If Shauna manages to escape, I'll go find her again; if she can't, it means the police have a way to deal with her, and she's useless. With this money, I can escape to another city outside the city center and lay low for a while.
He had everything planned perfectly, but Shauna's car didn't keep driving out of the tunnel as he expected.
She stopped right next to Corey.
How did she see me?!
Corey instinctively felt a chill and tried to get up and leave, but then he saw a beam of white light shining from the other end of the tunnel.
Who was shining the flashlight?
No one answered Corey's question. The next second, Shawna disappeared into the tunnel, leaving behind an empty car, a car key thrown into Corey's hand, and a nylon bag full of money.
"Corey Parker! Get to the ground right now! You're done for!"
The police car lights finally caught up, almost blinding Corey. He couldn't help but lower his head, and he could hear the sound of several handguns being chambered. He immediately assessed the situation and obediently lay down on the ground.
"It wasn't me, I wasn't driving!" he shouted, lying on the ground. "Shauna was driving, and she stole the money! She was on the other side of the tunnel, and I didn't do anything the whole time!"
"Shut up! Be quiet!"
The police ignored what he said, simply put him in a police car, and took him away from the scene.
That night, Corey returned to his cozy, familiar cell.
At this moment, he stared blankly outside the iron bars, hoping to wait for Shawna to come back and save him, even though he knew that Shawna must hate him very much, Shawna had been angry with him countless times before.
Anyway, she'll always forgive herself; she just needs some time to calm down—three days at most, one day at the least.
Just then, the sound of prison guards' footsteps echoed down the corridor, stopping in front of Corey's cell door.
"Corey Parker?"
"It's me! It's me!"
As if seeing a glimmer of hope, Corey immediately replied, "I am Corey!"
"Someone wants to see you. Come with me." Hearing this, he was overjoyed and followed the prison guard out of the cell.
Three minutes later, he returned to that familiar cubicle and saw Xiao Na visiting the prisoner again.
Corey happily picked up the microphone, but just as he was about to speak, he noticed that Shawna's expression was inexplicably cold.
"Corey, what do you think of prison?"
"Shauna, this is hell, I don't want to go even a second longer—"
"That's great."
Corey looked at Shawna's eyes in astonishment.
".ah?"
“I said, that’s great,” Shawna replied, “but that’s not the best place. Do you know what the best place is?”
Kore looked at the unfamiliar Shawna in front of him, opened his mouth, but couldn't say a word.
“The best part is that your original sentence was two years, but you escaped once.” Shauna couldn’t help but laugh as she said this: “So, your sentence will now be increased by ten years.”
After saying that, she looked at Corey sitting opposite her. He didn't seem to have reacted yet and remained silent.
“But twelve years is not your limit,” Shawna continued. “Because after your escape, you committed two more robberies, one involving an armored truck and the other involving my friend’s money and car. Both were large sums of money, and your fingerprints were on the money and bags. There were witnesses for the first robbery and physical evidence for the second. So, you will have to add another fifteen years. Now, your sentence is twenty-seven years.”
At this moment, Corey's face turned ashen.
“But this isn’t over yet, Corey. Do you remember Marcus?” Shauna asked. “He’s in jail now, and unfortunately, he was arrested because I secretly called the police—of course, I was brought here by you, so he’ll come straight to you.”
Upon hearing this, Corey's expression began to contort into a ferocious grimace.
"You filthy bastard!" he cursed through gritted teeth. "You'll be joining me in no time! Don't forget, the escape and the money were all your doing—"
“No, no,” Shauna denied. “You were the only one who escaped. Although no one saw how you got out, it definitely has nothing to do with me.”
"As for the money, you robbed it both times. I even called the police when you forced me to go with you to find Marcus—otherwise, how could the police have found our location so quickly? Just because of the locator in the money?"
At this point, Shawna sighed, "I wonder if the Central City Police Department will give me any bonus."
"You bastard! Don't forget, your friend's money is also partly tied to your account—"
"What of mine is mine?"
Shauna laughed: "Think carefully, what part of me is in it?"
Corey was speechless.
Because during the second theft, Shawna genuinely didn't touch the money bag or banknotes at all; she took the initiative to put the money in and take it out herself.
"And on the car—"
"Oh, my friend lent me his car."
Shauna shrugged: "It's normal to have my fingerprints on the steering wheel, but as for why there are your fingerprints on it too—there's only one answer."
“Nobody saw me, Corey,” she said softly. “So of course you did it all.”
