Chapter 19 Changing the Core

Chapter 19 Changing the Core
"Are you a family member of the patient?"

Emergency room.

After the doctors quickly induced vomiting, performed gastric lavage and diarrhea on the woman, one of the female doctors asked Fu Yuan with a serious face.

Fu Yuan shook his head and said softly, "I don't know her."

The doctor was a bit skeptical, but the wariness in his eyes was a little less. He told her the general condition of the patient: "Based on your description, our preliminary diagnosis is poisoning."

Fu Yuan was a little surprised: "Poisoned?"

She had lived for more than 20 years without being poisoned, so the word seemed a little distant to her.

She initially thought it was an allergy. Some people are allergic to seafood, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and bruises or red marks on the body.

"Yes." The doctor nodded. "Based on the symptoms, the preliminary diagnosis is that the patient may have taken a large amount of ricin."

"Ricin?" Fu Yuan was a little surprised. She had heard of it before. "But aren't drugs containing this ingredient strictly controlled? How could she possibly obtain it and take it herself?"

The doctor gave her a strange look, his guard rising again. "You know quite a lot."

Fu Yuan said, "I used to read novels, and it appeared in them."

"Castor beans, their seeds can be used to extract oil and also have industrial uses." The doctor, writing frantically on a list, said slowly, "They're not picky about the land they grow, and they have high economic value. As long as they've been approved, they can be planted."

Fu Yuan was silent, watching the doctor beside him give the woman a saline and glucose solution.

The doctor looked at her expression, his tense face suddenly relaxed, and he laughed. "We're not sure if it's ricin, but we can only guess. We've drawn blood for testing, and we'll also do an electrocardiogram and an abdominal CT scan later."

Fu Yuan nodded, and the doctor handed over the list. "Can you please contact the patient's family? Or, please help me pay the bill at the cashier's office on the first floor of the outpatient department. CT scans and other procedures require payment before they can be performed."

Fu Yuan: “?”

She took the order and repeated helplessly, "I don't know her well, we just met on the road."

"It's okay. Wait until she wakes up, then give her the list and ask her to contact her family." The doctor took off the plastic gloves on his hands and threw them into the trash can. "By the way, remember to pay the registration fee."

After saying that, he lifted the curtain and changed rooms. On the curtain was written: Medical area only, please do not enter without permission.

The room was very simple. Fu Yuan looked at the woman on the hospital bed. Her face was still pale, her eyes were not open, and her eyeballs moved slightly.

The bed below had four wheels and could be pushed, and there were two people slightly bigger than her next to it.

Listening to their conversation, one of them had a persistent low-grade fever, and the other had a sudden stroke, and both were being carefully cared for by someone.

"I know you're awake." Fu Yuan moved a stool at the front desk and sat next to the woman. He looked at her slightly trembling eyes and spoke softly.

The woman's eyelids moved a few times, but she still refused to open her eyes.

Fu Yuan looked at her without saying a word for a long time.

After a while, Fu Yuan said, "I can't wake someone who's pretending to be asleep. This is the doctor's order, and I don't understand it. The doctor isn't rushing to treat me, which means it's not that critical yet. You should have heard what the doctor said. You can pay the bill yourself later, or if you've figured it out, you can contact your relatives."

After saying that, he stood up, took her hand, and stuffed the prescription that the doctor had just written into her hand.

When he tried to pull away, the woman held on tightly.

"Finally woke up?" Fu Yuan pulled his hand away. His attitude was not very friendly and his tone was a little sarcastic.

"No..." The woman lay on the hospital bed, her face pale. She pleaded softly, her eyes filled with tears, looking pitiful. If it were a man at this moment, he might have immediately agreed to stay with her in a moment of excitement.

But for Fu Yuan, it was just a chance acquaintance after all. She felt that there was something strange about the matter, so she followed to find out what happened.

We had already done our best by sending her to the hospital. It was impossible for her to help pay the bills - she could hardly eat.

Fu Yuan finally softened his heart and sat back on the stool. "If you have any difficulties, just tell me."

The woman didn't dare to look at her and didn't speak.

Fu Yuan was a little annoyed, and said in a stiff tone: "If you don't say anything, I'll leave. I'm just a poor graduate. My family bought an unfinished building in a small county town and owes a lot of debt to the bank. I can't give you any money even if you want to scam me!"

"No..." The woman looked at her in panic, lowered her head, and whispered softly, "I suspect someone is... murdering me."

Fu Yuan: “?”

Fu Yuan was so angry that he laughed: "You don't have to make such a lame excuse, right? It's 2030, almost 2031, and we live in a society ruled by law. Why do we still seem to be living in the last century?"

"No, it's true." The woman widened her eyes, a layer of mist filling them.

Fu Yuan couldn't bear to see others cry, so he softened his tone: "Why do you feel that way? Is it because the doctor said you might have been poisoned?"

The woman nodded, then shook her head. "I told you, I just had a physical examination a while ago... I'm getting married."

Fu Yuan nodded and motioned for her to continue.

The woman looked at her pleadingly, "You're the only one I can trust now. He died this morning, and I've always suspected homicide. Now, it's my turn."

Fu Yuan was a little worried. "Didn't you start having a fever last night? And your husband, the forensic doctor determined he committed suicide. If I heard correctly, there are also surveillance videos."

"Don't you think it's very strange? If it was suicide, he could have just died quietly. Why would he have done such a unnecessary thing?" The woman smiled helplessly. When talking about the death of her newlywed husband, she did not have any nostalgia, as if he was a completely unrelated person.

Fu Yuan was a little tired and didn't want to care about it anymore. "So? Leave this kind of thing to professionals, like the police. You can talk to them."

The woman shook her head. "I've already said that. They agreed on the surface, but I can tell they don't really care."

Fu Yuan didn't know what to say: "You think too much, they speak with evidence."

The woman was silent, then said, "I can't possibly swallow the poison myself. I'm not that fragile. There are so many rich men in the world."

Fu Yuan affirmed this point: "That's true. But what's the point of you telling me this?"

"You are the only one I can trust now," the woman repeated.

Then she added, "There's one more thing I haven't told the police. When my husband left, he looked at me in a very strange way..."

Fu Yuan was puzzled.

The woman paused and said, "It's like a new core has been replaced inside."

(Pointing fingers) There really isn't much substance in a chapter of 2000. If I write it too quickly it will be abrupt, and the details will be superficial.

(wiping tears) Or I should just stock up on manuscripts… I feel like it would be smoother with more words.
