Chapter 316 Scare yourself

Li Hongying had already reached the door when she remembered that the kang (heated brick bed) in her room was cold. She needed to cook, so she couldn't heat the kang. She turned around to call Wei Laosan to heat the kang.

Seeing him staring blankly outside, Li Hongying called out to him, but Wei Laosan ignored her.

She simply walked back and waved her hand in front of Wei Laosan a few times.

"Mother." Wei Laosan came back to his senses and looked at Li Hongying with a puzzled expression.

Li Hongying asked, "What are you thinking about? I called you but you didn't hear me."

Thinking that Xiao Li and that mysterious young man were probably in the kitchen stewing pheasant, Wei Laosan would never say this aloud; just thinking about pheasant made his mouth water.

"I wasn't thinking about anything, Mother. What do you want me to do by calling me?" Wei Laosan changed the subject.

Li Hongying said, "My room is freezing cold because the kang (heated brick bed) hasn't been heated for a day and a night. I'll go cook some rice, and you go and heat up the kang for me."

Hearing his mother say she was going to cook, Wei Laosan remembered what she had said about just making do with whatever was available. He said with envy, "The neighbors next door are eating pheasants, and they eat two pheasants in one meal."

"My daughter and I can only manage to eat one meal. Back when we were still living together, why would we bother you to cook for us?"

Hearing this, Li Hongying was furious again.

It's all because of those two heartless bastards, Wei Jingyuan and Tao Qiuyi, who insisted on splitting up the family. If they hadn't split up, she could just sit and wait for meals; she wouldn't have had to cook for herself at all.

And with the two pheasants today, she can at least eat one.

"Eat, eat, eat them to death! Eat pheasants, let the pheasant bones choke you!" The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, and Li Hongying's thoughts were completely swayed by Wei Laosan.

She didn't detect the divisive intent in her son's words; instead, she thought he was right.

Anyway, all the blame lies with Wei Jingyuan and Tao Qiuyi; she and her sons are innocent.

Hearing his mother curse Wei Jingyuan and the others, Wei Laosan felt extremely satisfied. He continued resentfully, "Speaking of which, the reason Jingyuan has become so unruly is all because of Tao Qiuyi."

"If he hadn't saved Tao Qiuyi back then, none of this would have happened today."

"What's the point of saying all this now?" If Li Hongying still couldn't understand the meaning behind Wei Laosan's words at this moment, she would have lived most of her life in vain.

"Don't forget, you agreed very readily when we divided the family property."

Wei Laosan protested, "Mother, I had no choice but to compromise! Tao Qiuyi was so aggressive; if my elder brother and I hadn't agreed, she would have definitely kicked us all out."

“You are Jingyuan’s grandmother, he wouldn’t dare to kick you out. My elder brother and I are just Jingyuan’s uncles, he would kick both of our families out of this house.”

"We really have nowhere to reason with them."

“That little slut Tao Qiuyi, I knew she was a troublemaker the moment I saw her.” Although Li Hongying was angry that her son was not living up to her expectations, she also knew that what Wei Laosan said was true.

"Unfortunately, Wei Jingyuan was bewitched by her and even went with her to get a marriage certificate from your fourth brother. Not only did he not listen to what I said, but he also got instigated by Tao Qiuyi to divide the family property."

"Now your older brother and your son have both been beaten into the hospital by Tao Qiuyi. Wei Jingyuan is truly a scoundrel."

Seeing that his mother was quite angry, Wei Laosan quickly patted her back and comforted her, saying, "Mother, don't be angry, let's not be angry. It's not worth getting upset."

“Let’s discuss what to do after my brother is discharged from the hospital,” Li Hongying said, patting her chest. “How can I not be angry? That ingrate Wei Jingyuan, I took a pheasant from him and he accused me of stealing it.”

"What an unfilial and disobedient child, a wretch who deserves to be struck by lightning."

No, she wasn't just angry; she was also furious. She wished she could drink Wei Jingyuan's blood, eat his flesh, and even poison him with rat poison.

Night falls.

After dinner, Tao Qiuyi and Wei Jingyuan put on thick cotton-padded coats. They told the three boys in the house that they wouldn't be coming home that night, and instructed them to lock the door and not open it for anyone.

Under the expectant gaze of the three boys, he carried the pheasant soup in a bucket and went to the bamboo forest.

Inside the bamboo house, Grandma Chen was cooking cornmeal porridge in a broken pot.

A rich aroma of chicken soup wafted through the bamboo house, and Grandma Chen's heart jumped. The bamboo house used to have a door, which, while not very useful, at least gave her some peace of mind.

Now that the door is broken and Old Master Tao is seriously injured and collapsed, how could she, a woman, not be afraid?

Turning her head to look towards the door, she saw only bamboo swaying in the wind. Not seeing the expected figure pass by, Grandma Chen finally felt relieved.

Patting her chest, she comforted herself, saying, "It's okay, it's okay, don't scare yourself."

Wei Jingyuan and Tao Qiuyi, who were standing by the stone table, looked at Grandma Chen's actions and both showed expressions that were hard to describe.

The two women swear to God they never intended to frighten Grandma Chen. But now that they're inside, what if they go out and startle Grandma Chen again?
After thinking for a moment, Tao Qiuyi said gently, "Grandma Chen, please bring three bowls over."

Upon hearing Tao Qiuyi's voice, Grandma Chen's body visibly stiffened for a moment. She turned around abruptly and saw a perfect couple standing by the stone table.

He opened his mouth, but no sound came out, so he decisively closed it again.

Then, Grandma Chen quickly lifted the pot of simmering corn porridge and placed it aside. She glanced nervously at the doorway again, then hurried towards the two of them.

"It's still early, why are you two here?" Overcoming her fear, Grandma Chen urged them, "Go back quickly, go back quickly."

"You two should go back right away! If the villagers see you two here, you'll be in big trouble."

"Don't worry, Grandma Chen, no one saw us come." Compared to Grandma Chen's anxiety and worry, Tao Qiuyi was much calmer. She smiled and reassured Grandma Chen.

"Even if someone sees it, it doesn't matter. Anyone who dares to tell anyone, I'll beat them up. If I don't make sure the person who told them goes to the hospital to reflect on their actions, then I'll consider my beating them for nothing."

Grandma Chen was clearly shocked by Tao Qiuyi's violent words and didn't know what to say for a moment.

She looked at Wei Jingyuan, hoping he could persuade Tao Qiuyi to go back. Unexpectedly, Wei Jingyuan instead told her not to worry, as no one had seen them come here.

Grandma Chen was so flustered by the young couple that she didn't know whether to cry or laugh.

Wei Jingyuan placed the bucket he was carrying on the stone table, and Tao Qiuyi repeated, "Grandma Chen, we brought some food. Could you please go and get three bowls?"

If Tao Qiuyi weren't unfamiliar with the room, she would have gotten the bowls and chopsticks herself.

Grandma Chen thought Tao Qiuyi and Wei Jingyuan were going to eat together here, so she quickly went to get two bamboo bowls and a porcelain bowl with a chipped rim.

Looking at the two bamboo bowls and the porcelain bowl with a chipped rim, Tao Qiuyi's expression was somewhat strange.
