Chapter 297 Sending Wedding Candy

The next day.

Early in the morning, before the fog had thickened, Wei Jingyuan rode his bicycle to Old Jiang's thatched cottage.

Old Jiang was jogging slowly in the open space outside the house, exercising. Seeing Wei Jingyuan's bicycle approaching, he smiled and asked, "Why are you here so early today?"

Wei Jingyuan did not answer Elder Jiang's question immediately, but parked his bicycle.

Picking up the White Rabbit milk candies from the basket, Wei Jingyuan walked towards Old Jiang and said, "Qiuqiu and I went to the county to get our marriage certificate yesterday, and we've come to give you some wedding candies today."

"No wonder you're smiling so carelessly, turns out you got your marriage certificate." Old Jiang said with a hint of disdain, but he was secretly very happy for his apprentice. As the saying goes, a happy event makes one feel refreshed, and this must be exactly how he looked.

Glancing at the wedding candies in Wei Jingyuan's hand, Old Jiang reached out and took them. He took out four candies, saying, "You have two children at home, why did you bring so many candies? How many candies can an old man like me eat?"

As he spoke, Old Jiang put the four candies he had taken out into his cotton coat pocket. He then tossed the rest, along with the bag containing the White Rabbit milk candies, back to Wei Jingyuan.

Old Jiang said, "It's the thought that counts. Take the candy back for your younger brother, sister-in-law, and wife."

"Old Jiang, these are wedding candies from Qiuqiu and me for you." Wei Jingyuan waved his hand, refusing to take the candies Old Jiang offered, and said that there were still candies at home.

Old Jiang didn't care whether Wei Jingyuan had any candy left at home, and seeing that he didn't reach out to take it, he stepped forward to shorten the distance between them and stuffed the candy directly into Wei Jingyuan's arms.

Unable to persuade the old man, Wei Jingyuan had no choice but to put the candy back into the basket in front of the bicycle.

"Old Master, I've come today to ask you for another day off," Wei Jingyuan explained his purpose.

Old Jiang rolled his eyes at Wei Jingyuan and teased him, "You just got your marriage certificate yesterday and you're already asking for leave today. You're really something."

"Old Jiang, you've really wronged me. I took the day off today for important business," Wei Jingyuan said with a smile, trying to clear his name.

For him, Mr. Jiang was both a teacher and a friend, so he spoke more casually.

Seeing that Wei Jingyuan was more cheerful than before and smiled more often, Old Jiang was genuinely happy. Hearing that he had something important to discuss, he didn't ask what it was.

"There's no rush. Come inside with me first. I have something for you." With that, Old Jiang turned and walked towards the thatched hut.

Wei Jingyuan nodded and followed behind Elder Jiang.

The two entered the thatched hut one after the other.

A short while later, Wei Jingyuan walked out of the thatched hut with a small cloth bag, and Old Jiang saw him off.

"Old Jiang, I'm leaving." Wei Jingyuan got on his bicycle and waved to Old Jiang who was standing at the door.

Elder Jiang didn't speak, only nodded slightly, and watched him leave. Turning around, Elder Jiang's expression gradually became serious. Jing Yuan didn't directly refuse him, but he didn't agree either.

Wei family.

It was warm inside, and even warmer under the covers, making it hard not to stay in bed. Tao Qiuyi was awakened by the sound of running in the yard, remembering that she had a tough battle to fight today.

She got up, dressed, and saw a basin of warm water by the fireplace. Knowing that it was water Pear had prepared for her to wash her face, she put on her cotton coat, grabbed her toothbrush and toothpaste, and went out of the house.

"Boys, you're running a little late today." Tao Qiuyi smiled as she glanced at the three boys running in the yard, then went into the kitchen to get a glass of water.

I squatted down by the courtyard wall and started brushing my teeth.

In those days, there were no dedicated restrooms; people would squat by the courtyard wall to brush their teeth and wash their faces. After brushing her teeth, Tao Qiuyi wiped her mouth with the towel draped over her shoulder, then got up and walked into the house.

"Sister-in-law, your breakfast is warming up on the fireplace. We're going for a run, so go get it for yourself," Pear said as she ran, her breathing very steady.

"You've improved, Pear. You were running and talking without even getting out of breath," Tao Qiuyi praised Pear, then looked around the yard.

Not seeing that tall figure, she asked Pear again, "Pear, why are there only three of you? Where did your eldest brother go?"

Pear replied, "My elder brother went to Old Jiang's thatched hut early this morning."

Hearing that Wei Jingyuan went to Old Jiang's thatched cottage, Tao Qiuyi guessed that he was probably there to ask for leave. They had agreed last night to go into the mountains today.

"Did your older brother say when he'll be back?" Tao Qiuyi asked casually. How long would it take to ask for leave? He might already be on his way back.

Xiao Huai replied, "My elder brother said he would be back soon."

"Brother Wei also said that after my sister wakes up and washes up, she will have breakfast first. He will come back after she finishes breakfast," Qiu Si added.

Tao Qiuyi could tell from the fact that the two of them were breathing even more steadily than Li Zi that they had practiced the methods she had taught them quite a bit.

She was quite satisfied. She liked obedient children and disliked those disobedient and unruly children.

"Okay, you three keep running, I'm going to have breakfast." After saying that, Tao Qiuyi went back into the house to put away her toothbrush and cup, then washed her face and went to the next room.

Standing before the fireplace, Tao Qiuyi looked at the two bowls on the stone slab. One bowl contained white porridge, and the other contained two eggs and a steamed bun.

A warm feeling washed over Tao Qiuyi. She had just gone to the kitchen to get water to brush her teeth. She smelled sweet potatoes in the kitchen, so sweet potatoes were obviously for breakfast today.

They all knew she didn't like sweet potatoes, so they didn't leave any for her.

Carrying two bowls, Tao Qiuyi walked to the table and used her toes to pull out a long bench from under the table. After sitting down, she first took a sip of the congee, then put down the bowl and began peeling an egg.

After finishing an egg, Tao Qiuyi broke off half a steamed bun and put a small piece in her mouth.

The sound of a bicycle came from outside, followed by Wei Jingyuan asking the boy if she was up. The three boys replied that she was up and eating breakfast inside.

Then Wei Jingyuan gave the three boys a word of advice and walked towards the house.

Hearing footsteps approaching, Tao Qiuyi looked up towards the door. A tall figure strode in, exuding a chilling aura.

"You're back." Tao Qiuyi greeted first, holding half a steamed bun in her hand and chewing on another steamed bun.

"Hmm." Wei Jingyuan responded, walked to the table, and placed the candy and a small cloth bag he was carrying on the table.

Looking up at Wei Jingyuan, Tao Qiuyi glanced at the candy and small cloth bag on the table. Had he gone to deliver wedding candy but failed and instead brought back a small cloth bag?
Tao Qiuyi raised an eyebrow and asked, "You went to deliver wedding candy to Old Master Jiang? Old Master Jiang didn't accept it."

"I've accepted it. He left four candies, and asked me to bring the rest back for you and the children," Wei Jingyuan said, his tone tinged with helplessness.

Old Jiang was a stubborn old man; he meant what he said. Wei Jingyuan was also helpless about this. He walked to the foot of the bed while unbuttoning his cotton coat.

Because of Wei Jingyuan, Tao Qiuyi had interacted with Old Jiang a few times. She knew a little about Old Jiang's temperament; this was the kind of thing he was capable of doing.

Wei Jingyuan took off his coat and casually hung it on the shelf at the foot of the bed.
