Chapter 29 The person in charge is Shen Qinghe
When Minglang arrived at the CEO's office, Cheng Zhixu hadn't arrived yet. He sorted out his schedule for the day and put it on his desk. There were two important matters today: a meeting in the morning and an appointment with the Junlan representative to discuss contract details in the afternoon. The rest was trivial matters.
Just as I finished tidying up, the office door was pushed open.
Minglang turned around and saw Cheng Zhixu, who had arrived exhausted. He straightened his tie and strode towards him. Minglang greeted him first: "Good morning, Mr. Cheng."
"morning."
"Um, Mr. Cheng, I have something to tell you." Minglang stepped forward and said in a non-serious tone, "I just ran into Miss Jian's colleague in the elevator. She told me that Miss Jian is on sick leave."
Cheng Zhixu stood by the desk, his hands pausing from sorting documents, and looked up at him: "Are you sick?"
Minglang said "hmm".
Cheng Zhixu sat down, fished out his phone from his pocket, and called Jian Ling. The call rang for a long time, but no one answered. Worried that something had happened to her, Cheng Zhixu frowned and called again.
After ringing more than ten times, the phone was finally picked up. Jian Ling's slightly hoarse voice came from the other end: "Hello?"
"Where are you now? Why didn't you answer my call just now?" Cheng Zhixu asked anxiously.
"I heard my phone ring. The nurse was giving me an injection and couldn't free her hands to answer it." Jian Ling's throat felt uncomfortable and she coughed twice. "I'm in the hospital."
"one person?"
"Ah."
"Which hospital? Send me the address." Cheng Zhixu stood up less than two minutes after sitting down, as if he was ready to go out, which made Minglang stunned.
Jian Ling realized what he was going to do and said hurriedly, "You want to come find me? No, I'm a grown-up, there's nothing I can't handle. I'll go back after the infusion, and my aunt will take care of me." She spoke so quickly that her throat felt like it was scratched by a feather, itchy and burning, and she started coughing again.
Cheng Zhixu remembered Ye Guizhou saying that Jian Ling would get headaches and fever easily when the weather got cold, and her cough was the hardest to cure. His brows furrowed, and he stopped being polite to her. His voice was cold and hard: "You don't even listen to what the boss says? Jian Ling, do you still want to work here?"
Minglang, who was eavesdropping, was speechless. It was a shame for Mr. Cheng to use his status as the boss to put pressure on others at this time.
Jian Ling hesitated for a moment, hung up the phone, and sent her location via WeChat.
Cheng Zhixu glanced at the small dot on the map. She went to the hospital closest to her apartment.
"The morning meeting is canceled. Please inform everyone as soon as possible. I will notify you when the next meeting will be held. As for the afternoon meeting, you don't have to worry about it. I will take care of it when the time comes."
Cheng Zhixu said this and strode out of the office without caring about Minglang's reaction, leaving Minglang alone staring at the empty office in a daze.
The weather forecast shows that it will still rain today, but the rain has not fallen yet. The sky is dark, like a gray curtain covering it, with dark clouds rolling in, and rain may fall at any time.
Cheng Zhixu drove to the hospital and asked a nurse in the corridor to find the infusion room. There were dozens of patients of all sizes sitting in rows of blue plastic chairs receiving infusions.
He glanced around, finally spotting Jian Ling in a corner. She was wearing a dusty-pink lambskin coat with a white collar, which she had turned up, making her face appear smaller than her palm. She looked rather grim, leaning back in a chair, head tilted, dozing. An IV needle was stuck in the back of her right hand, resting on the armrest. Next to her stood an IV stand, two bottles of liquid medicine hanging from it, one large and one small. The larger bottle was administered first.
Cheng Zhixu had been staring at her for a long time, but she didn't notice. She was sleeping in a daze, probably because she was not sleeping comfortably. She moved her neck occasionally, but it soon tilted back down, and she slept with her head resting on her collar, looking pitiful.
Cheng Zhixu didn't wake her up and sat down in an empty seat on her left.
The bases of a row of plastic chairs were connected together. When he sat down, the chairs in the row shook. Jian Ling was awakened, her black eyelashes fluttered, and she opened her eyes.
The wind outside made the side windows rattle slightly, and the overhead lights cast a faint light, falling on people's shoulders like frost and snow. The infusion room was empty, filled with the smell of disinfectant, and it was chilly because the heating hadn't yet turned on.
Jian Ling shrank back, and when she turned around, she saw Cheng Zhixu sitting next to her.
He was wearing a dark blue suit, perfectly ironed, without a wrinkle, his tie stuck to his shirt, fastened with a metal tie clip. His eyes were dark and deep, staring at her intently.
Surrounded by bright white light, his whole body was shining, making him seem even more out of place here.
Jian Ling supported herself on the armrest of the chair with her left hand and sat up a little. She rubbed her eyes and said in a low, rustling voice, "When did you come over? I was already asleep."
She looked at the IV bottle above her head. There was still more than half of it left, indicating that she had not slept for long. She thought she had slept for a long time.
"I just came here less than ten minutes ago. I didn't call you because you were asleep." Cheng Zhixu held her hand and found that her hand was as cold as ice. He looked at her face and frowned again. "Why are your hands so cold?"
Jian Ling was listless, with her eyelids drooping and not saying a word.
Cheng Zhixu asked, "Have you had breakfast?"
Jian Ling shook her head. Cheng Zhixu sighed, told her to sit down, and stood up and walked out. Ten minutes later, he returned, placing a fully charged hand warmer in her arms and holding a steaming hot breakfast in his other hand.
"Eat something first." Cheng Zhixu said.
Jian Ling was receiving acupuncture on her right hand. She raised her left hand, but it was inconvenient for her to move, so she could only look at him eagerly.
Cheng Zhixu chuckled, lifted the lid of the porridge, and scooped a spoonful to her lips. The porridge was a sticky, shredded chicken porridge, unlike the bland white porridge, and not as greasy.
After eating a bowl of hot porridge, Jian Ling felt warm in her stomach. With the hand warmer in her arms, the temperature of her limbs gradually returned to normal, and she felt a little more energetic.
Cheng Zhixu picked up the garbage and threw it into the trash can, then sat back and lectured her: "How do you take care of yourself? You catch a cold as soon as the temperature drops."
Yesterday at noon, he had something to do and was having dinner with a client outside, so he asked Minglang to order a separate meal for her. He didn't know how she made herself sick.
Jian Ling tilted her head and rested it on his shoulder. Her heart was filled with sweetness, as if a candy jar had been overturned. "Yes, I'll catch a cold if I wear too little."
Cheng Zhixu reached out and touched her forehead. The fever hadn't subsided, still a little hot. He immediately became annoyed: "How dare you admit it? Are you a child? Do you have to wait for adults to tell you? Don't you know how to put on more clothes when you're cold?"
"Okay, okay, I get it. I was wrong. I won't do it again next time." Jian Ling pleaded in a soft voice. Then, remembering something, she raised her head and looked at him. "What time is it now? Is it okay for you to stay here with me? I can do it alone. Why don't you go back to the company?"
It was enough that he rushed to the hospital to stay with her for a while as soon as he learned that she was sick. She was not as ignorant as she was when she was a child and did not need a group of people to take care of her when she was sick. His job was more important.
Cheng Zhixu glanced at her coldly, "It was all arranged before you came here, so don't worry about it. Even if your voice is hoarse, it can't stop you from talking. Stop talking."
Jian Ling: “…”
"Excellent! Even my illness couldn't stop you from arguing with me." After finishing the two bottles of IV drip, Jian Ling went to the bathroom at the end of the corridor, and Cheng Zhixu went to get her medicine. When she came over, he drove her home.
On the way, Jian Ling called her aunt and told her that she didn't need to come over at noon today.
With Cheng Zhixu taking care of her, she doesn't need anyone else.
Jian Ling sat in the passenger seat, clutching a hand warmer that was no longer warm enough, looking glumly at the man beside her. It was raining outside, the autumn rain blown sideways by the wind, pattering against the windshield, quickly drenching the crystal glass. The wipers swept mechanically back and forth. He drove slowly, his profile a quiet and beautiful sight, as if they were the only two people in this world.
While waiting for the red light, Cheng Zhixu turned his head and asked, "Are you still cold?"
He turned on the heater and the temperature in the car rose. He felt a little hot even in his suit. He didn't know how she, the patient, felt.
Jian Ling shook her head: "Not cold."
Cheng Zhixu gave up the idea of adjusting the temperature and drove into the community.
After entering the apartment, he picked up the remote control from the coffee table, turned on the central air conditioning, closed the window used for ventilation, turned around and said to Jian Ling, "Go upstairs to rest. I'll call you at lunch time."
Jian Ling obediently returned to the bedroom on the second floor, changed into a set of soft home clothes, and fell asleep.
-
When she woke up, Jian Ling was completely dazed. Outside the curtains, the sound of raindrops fell, hazy and blurry. The house was empty, and she could smell a cold air.
She touched her forehead; it wasn't as hot as it had been that morning. After lingering in bed for a while, she wrapped herself in a blanket and walked down the stairs. She spotted the man sitting on the sofa, looking at his phone. He had taken off his suit jacket, revealing a snow-white shirt and light gray slippers. He crossed his legs, looking focused, his facial features defined by their superior lines.
Jian Ling paused on the third-to-last step, holding onto the railing and staring at him blankly.
Hearing the noise, Cheng Zhixu raised his head and looked towards the source of the sound, put down his phone and stood up: "Awake? How do you feel?"
"Much better." Jian Ling looked at the clock on the wall. It was already past one in the afternoon. He said he would wake her up at lunchtime, but she ended up sleeping until she woke up naturally. She felt very sorry for him. "Have you had lunch?"
"I've eaten." Cheng Zhixu went to the kitchen, heated up the dish reserved for her, and brought it to her.
Jian Ling was drinking hot soup when something suddenly touched her forehead. Bewildered, she looked up and saw that it was Cheng Zhixu holding a thermometer and taking a temperature reading on her forehead: "37 degrees Celsius, a low-grade fever. Remember to take your medicine after dinner."
Jian Ling grumbled, finishing her lunch in silence. Cheng Zhixu brought her a cup of water and placed it next to her, telling her to wait half an hour before taking her medicine.
Jian Ling licked her dry lips, feeling a little elated. She moved to sit on the sofa, hugging a large pillow. Her complexion hadn't recovered yet, and it still looked a bit pale. "Is it really okay for you not to go to the company all morning?"
Cheng Zhixu brushed her messy hair and said, "I forgot to tell you, I have an appointment with a person in charge to discuss work this afternoon. I asked someone to come directly over. Is that okay with you?"
Jian Ling looked up in surprise, her slender fingers grasping the edge of the pillow, nervous and uncertain, and asked, "Are you coming home?"
Cheng Zhixu asked back: "Do you have a problem?"
Jian Ling paused for a moment and said firmly, "No."
Not to mention that the house belonged to Cheng Zhixu, so he could have anyone he wanted. Moreover, he hadn't been at work for her, so he had chosen to have them here. How could she complain? At most, she could just go upstairs and hide while the person in charge came over.
Jian Ling figured it out and reiterated that she was fine. She sat and played for half an hour, then, at Cheng Zhixu's urging, took some cold medicine. Thanks to her regular medication during this time, her swallowing skills had improved, and she hadn't vomited.
Thinking about the medicine she needed to take to recuperate, Jian Ling hesitated. She pulled her phone out from under the sofa, thought it over, and sent a message to Chen Xulin.
Jian Ling: "Doctor Chen, sorry to bother you. I'm taking cold medicine. I'm not sure if it conflicts with the medicine you prescribed. Can we take it together?"
Chen Xulin quickly replied: "Do you have a cold?"
Jian Ling: "Yeah."
Chen Xulin: "I just reminded you a few days ago to keep warm in the cold weather, how did you catch a cold?"
Jian Ling didn't know what to say, so she found an emoticon and sent it: "[Little bunny covering his face]"
Cheng Zhixu cleaned the table and washed his hands when he saw her kneeling on the sofa, engrossed in a conversation. He walked over with a suspicious look on his face, bent down, picked up the blanket that had slipped from her shoulders onto the sofa, and threw it over her head. "Who are you chatting with? You look so happy?"
Jian Ling was talking to Doctor Chen when suddenly a shadow fell over her, plunging her vision into darkness. She frantically pulled back the blanket, revealing a disheveled head. She glared at Cheng Zhixu, "Doctor."
Cheng Zhixu keenly sensed something was wrong and narrowed his eyes: "Which doctor?"
Jian Ling showed Cheng Zhixu her phone screen, where Chen Xulin had just replied: "Take a picture of the cold medicine you're taking and send it to me. I'll take a look."
Cheng Zhixu looked at her with scrutiny. Jian Ling adjusted her posture and sat properly on the sofa. "I'm worried that the medicine I'm taking might conflict with the cold medicine. I'd better ask a doctor to be on the safe side."
Cheng Zhixu looked at her without saying a word.
Jian Ling took a photo and sent it to Chen Xulin. Chen Xulin took a look and saw that they were all common cold medicines. He then replied, "It shouldn't have any effect, you can take them normally. But considering your stomach isn't very good, you should stop taking them for a few days. Wait until your cold is gone before taking the tonic medicine. It's not a big deal if you stop taking the medicine for a few days."
Jian Ling: "Okay, thank you, Doctor Chen. Thank you for your help."
Chen Xulin: "You're welcome. Contact me if you have any questions."
Cheng Zhixu stood up and went to the water dispenser to get a glass of water. Turning back, he saw Jian Ling crawling down from the sofa like a boneless person, sitting on the carpet, opening her laptop on the coffee table, and watching a movie with a blanket wrapped around her.
It really makes people worry. Don't you know that sitting on the floor will easily make you cold? Cheng Zhixu frowned and reminded her with a glass of water: "The floor is cold, sit on the sofa."
"Oh."
Jian Ling picked up her computer and climbed back onto the sofa, wrapping herself tightly in the blanket. At that moment, the doorbell rang. Cheng Zhixu put down his water cup and walked over to open the door in his slippers.
Jian Ling looked over curiously, but she never expected that the "person in charge" Cheng Zhixu mentioned was actually the woman she had met in his office. Her name seemed to be... Shen Qinghe?
Jian Ling raised the knife: Have you ever seen a tigress sitting up in shock while dying?
Cheng Zhixu: No...
