Foolish Brother Odin
Chapter 379 Attack on the Argo
Chapter 379 Attack on the Argo
Myths (history) may have a certain inertia, but myths in different universes may not be perfectly replicated, and their timelines may not match.
Just as the Aesir are now under the rule of the Downs, Odin has nothing to do with them.
In this Greek universe, many myths have been seriously deviated from their intended meaning.
The "Fifty Heroes of the Argonauts" was originally a legendary story from a very early period, but in this version it has been greatly delayed, and the so-called fifty heroes are missing the most powerful Hercules, as well as the fathers of Achilles and Ajax the Younger.
In a sense, the prestige of this ship of heroes has decreased, but not by much. This is because it also includes heroes such as Zeus's son Castor and Polydexus, as well as Meleager, who killed the Calydonian Boar.
At this point in time, Jason had just swindled the Golden Fleece from Colchis.
In truth, this is a ridiculous and tragic story.
Jason's father's throne was usurped by his uncle Pelias. With the secret support of Hera and other Greek gods, the young Jason went to his uncle to reclaim the throne, only to be tricked. Pelias pretended to be willing to abdicate, but simultaneously suggested that Jason embark on a glorious adventure—to retrieve the Golden Fleece from the kingdom of Colchis—claiming it as their family's property, and promising to return the throne if Jason retrieved the Golden Fleece.
Jason really did go with a bunch of heroes.
Originally, he was not going to get the Golden Fleece, but Medea, the princess of Colchis, was tricked by Cupid and struck by Cupid's arrow. She then became madly infatuated with Jason and even betrayed her father and brother to steal the Golden Fleece.
At this very moment, the Argo is in the period after it has just abducted Medea and obtained the Golden Fleece.
Medea was stunned as soon as she boarded the ship.
After abandoning her father and indirectly causing her brother's death, she gained so-called love. Jason then completely ignored her, chatting endlessly with other heroes about the adventure and how to reclaim the throne, never mentioning her position as queen.
Medea was unaware that, according to the tragic story in the myth, this was only the beginning of her suffering. She would later harm countless people for Jason's sake, only to suffer the tragic fate of being abandoned after being seduced and forced to kill her own child.
Just then, the lookout on the mast suddenly shouted, "Enemy sights!"
"Enemies? The pursuers of King Colchis?" Jason paused, taken aback. His methods of obtaining the Golden Fleece weren't exactly honorable; he relied on Medea to find a weakness and steal it from the dragon. The king's rage was understandable.
Things turned out differently than anyone expected.
"No! That's not the Colchis, not even any known ship!"
No need for lookouts anymore.
Jason and his men all saw the giant ship.
When the metallic black ship opposite them cleaved the waves with its octopus figurehead, not only Jason and his men, but the entire bay seemed to hold its breath.
Not to mention the oarsmen, even Zeus's son Castor's fingers dug deep into the oars, drops of blood seeping from under his nails into the salty seawater—he had never imagined that a colossal metal object could be built into such a massive structure and float on the sea. This thing was like a moving mountain, shattering all their knowledge of ships.
On the black ship, sixteen canvas sails, some trapezoidal and some triangular, caught the wind and shattered the midday sun into mottled fragments of gold.
Compared to this thing, the single-deck oarsman propelled by fifty oarsmen looked like a small fishing boat, trembling with the waves, under its shadow.
And it wasn't just one, it was three black ships.
One of the ships seized the windward position with a speed Jason could not have imagined, and the sharp scraping of chains at the top of its mast startled the seagulls that were dozing on the mast.
"What are they going to do?" Young Jason asked, tilting his head back as his straw hat slipped off, revealing goosebumps on the back of his neck.
The cold metallic gleam of metal shimmered faintly through the open metal windows on the opposite ship's side; each dark, square opening could easily swallow Jason.
A salty sea breeze, carrying the scent of pine resin and tar, wafted into her nostrils, mingling with a strange, rusty, menacing force. Medea instinctively sensed danger, and the beautiful incantation rolled in her throat.
Just as the shimmering divine runes formed several composite protective arrays in front of the bow, sulfurous vortexes seemed to explode upwind.
Dozens of enormous black iron balls flew in with terrifying shrieks, which suddenly put Medea under immense strain.
However, her wind elemental shield managed to withstand this wave of attacks.
The nightmare is far from over; no, quite the opposite, it has only just begun.
Before the smoke from the black ship upwind had even dissipated, the salvo from the other two black ships had already torn through the air.
The black iron balls that came from different directions were far beyond Medea's ability to intercept.
This wooden ship, which should have become a legend, was hit by a cannonball for the first time since its birth.
The port keel of the single-masted oar-powered warship emitted a mournful sound like rotten wood breaking. The oarsmen, huddled behind the shields, were jolted into a heap, and the salty seawater mixed with splinters rained down on their hunched backs.
It's unclear whether it's a curse or if the other party is truly that accurate.
The mast of the Argo, which had been blessed by Poseidon, was blown off.
In the shadow of the toppled mast, the lookout clung desperately to the charred rope. Through his burning eyelids, he saw several more black iron balls smashing through the morning mist and hurtling toward the deck—one of them, grazing the bow like a ploughing iron beast, hurled the bronze ram and twelve oarsmen into the boiling waves. As blood foamed on the emerald sea, Jason finally saw the enemy on the other side.
Clearly, they were not from Greece, Asia Minor, or Egupta (the transliteration of the ancient Egyptian name).
Jason's face suddenly darkened: "Could they be from that legendary outer world?"
He guessed it right!
It's a pity there was no prize!
He originally thought that the other party would teach them a lesson with a continuous barrage of black balls, or even destroy them from a distance.
not at all!
After a single salvo from the three black ships, they rapidly approached the Argo.
From the gap in the shield of the ship, which was at least five stories high above the sea, a golden bow, clearly imbued with divine power, began to unleash its might.
"call out--"
This arrow pierced the sky and sea.
It possessed a sacredness unfamiliar to Greek heroes like Jason, easily piercing the target's divinely blessed bronze shield and shooting the unfortunate man straight through the neck.
"Hiss..." Jason gasped, staring at the handsome, dark-skinned archer on the opposite ship, his lips trembling: "You, you, do you know what you've done?"
The enemy actually killed Zeus's son Castor with an arrow.
My name is Arjuna!
