Chapter 70 Don't Try to Cheate Me Again
Margaret and Rosaline reluctantly stepped into the town under the "escort" of the highwayman. Margaret almost laughed out loud as she watched the thief disappear behind her.
"What's that smell? So disgusting!" A group of caravan members who were preparing to enter the city covered their noses tightly and stared at them with disgust.
"Get out! Beggars are not welcome here!" The guards pointed their spears at them and drove them away rudely.
"Let's go now, let's go now." Margaret smiled, quickly pulled Rosalin up and left the team.
"Your Majesty, aren't we going in?" Rosalin asked doubtfully.
"Of course not. You can see that we can't get in like this. Throw away the dung clothes and go over there to wash them." Margaret pointed to the stream outside the city and pulled Rosaline to the water's edge.
They took off their dung clothes and washed their faces, necks and arms carefully, which reduced the odor on their bodies. Then they went back to the town.
Behind them, in the woods in the distance, the group of highwaymen looked at each other, and their faces seemed to have turned into those of donkeys.
The leader cursed in frustration: "We were deceived by those two girls. They are priceless beauties!"
When they returned, the guard glanced at them, seemed not to recognize them, and let them go.
"What beautiful girls, but they smell so bad," he complained, obviously having no interest in them.
Margaret snickered.
She could have simply bribed the guards with the golden peas, but she didn't, thinking that the gold might cause unnecessary trouble.
As they entered the town, the view before them suddenly opened up and they could hear a constant hustle and bustle, with the sounds of blacksmiths hammering, dogs barking, and horses hooves clattering one after another.
Ignoring the cow and horse dung on the ground, this place seems very prosperous, with people talking and walking everywhere.
Margaret and Rosalin carefully avoided the feces on the road and strolled casually. Although passers-by covered their noses and avoided them, they did not cause any trouble.
They stopped in front of a tavern, looked up at the wine glass pattern on the sign, and couldn't help swallowing.
"Your Majesty, do we have money? How about going in for a drink?" Rosalin asked expectantly.
"Of course." Margaret patted her sleeves lightly to make sure they were full of golden peas. "Let's go in."
They walked into the tavern and went straight to the counter, leaving behind a trail of disgusting smell, and the tavern owner immediately covered his nose.
"You two pretty ladies, don't you ever take a bath?"
Margaret listened to the other's contemptuous words, knowing how strong the smell on her and Rosaleen was.
It was not the 10th century, the Black Death had not happened yet, and people would take a bath. Therefore, she was not angry about being disliked, but felt that this was a normal reaction.
"That's why we need a good bath, don't you think?" Margaret put a golden pea on the counter.
Seeing the golden peas, the tavern owner's eyes lit up immediately: "What a generous guest!"
He shouted into the pub: "Ian? Ian where are you? Damn salary thief, come here!"
"Uncle, what do you want from me?" A young man came running over with a wine jug in his hand.
But he quickly covered his nose, fixed his eyes on the two people who were the source of the smell, and asked in surprise: "What is that smell? It stinks!"
"Shut up, lazy ass, if your mother wasn't my sister, I would have kicked you out long ago. Go and prepare a guest room for these two... uh, generous ladies, and a hot bath!" The tavern owner pointed at the young man and ordered. "Okay, uncle!" The young man didn't dare to refute.
After carefully weighing the golden peas on a scale, the tavern owner handed Margaret five ounces of silver and ordered the kitchen to prepare two "warrior meals".
As for the contents of the set meal, Margaret had no idea, because usually they just ate whatever was available and there was no choice.
Ian, the waiter, said, "Come with me, ladies."
"Wait a minute!" Margaret turned to the tavern owner, "Is anyone here willing to go out of the city and take risks? I need some warriors."
"Warriors?" The tavern owner thought for a moment. "Oh, I do have some guys from the Franks and the North who owe me money for drinks. If you want to hire them, I can introduce them to you so that they can also pay their debts. Are you sure?"
"Of course!" Margaret nodded. "Let's set it for tomorrow."
"Okay, I'll inform them. I'll take you to the lord's livestock shed tomorrow. They are doing farm work there." The tavern owner nodded and busied himself with greeting the next guest.
Margaret and Rosalyn washed themselves in a tub and enjoyed two large plates of roast beef with vegetables and a loaf of sliced rye bread.
Wow, the food portions are so huge, no wonder it is called the "Warrior Meal". It is obviously specially prepared for those who eat as big as a cow.
No wonder it’s so expensive!
Using the bath water, the two washed and dried their clothes, and then enjoyed a long-awaited comfortable sleep.
Their tense nerves finally relaxed and they even slept until the afternoon the next day until a knock on the door woke them up.
Margaret and Rosalin got dressed and opened the door to find Ian, the nephew of the tavern owner. When he saw Margaret, his eyes lit up.
"My uncle asked me to take you to meet the warriors. Do you want to set off now?"
"Of course!" Margaret nodded, "but we need to eat something first, you have to wait for us for a while."
Margaret and Rosalin walked up to the counter, handed over an ounce of silver, and took the half ounce of silver that the boss gave back in change, as well as two plates of hot beef stew and two large glasses of fragrant ale.
She and Rosaline took their food and wine and found a corner to sit down. In the tavern, the music of the bard created a warm atmosphere. Compared with the previous camping, Margaret felt that the people around her became particularly friendly. As she ate the stew, she felt a desire to settle down here.
It's so comfortable.
Unfortunately, her money was not enough to support her living in such a place for a long time, and she was unwilling to eat only rye bread every day. Her love for meat made her unable to tolerate meals without meat.
Margaret drank the ale and felt extremely refreshed.
Fight for a few more decades, and then you can enjoy life and take a trip along the Silk Road! She made up her mind silently.
Suddenly, she felt something sharp pressing against her side. Margaret lowered her head and her pupils contracted instantly.
She saw the tip of a dagger pressed against her kidney. Looking up, she saw a familiar face.
"Sly woman, I finally found you. How dare you deceive us? Hand over all the money you have!"
Margaret looked at the leader of the highwaymen in front of her and was about to say that she had no money, but was interrupted by the other party: "Don't try to deceive me again, I have already seen it!"
