Chapter 395 I'm very good at sophistry (Bonus chapter, please read on)
In Japan, the time required for criminal cases to go from being closed to being prosecuted by the prosecutor is not fixed. Generally speaking, unless there are special circumstances such as a case being delayed, the prosecutor usually decides whether to prosecute within 23 days after the suspect is arrested.
If the police believe that the arrest of a criminal suspect is necessary, they may apply to the judge for an arrest warrant. After the arrest warrant is issued, the police must transfer the case to the prosecutor within 48 hours.
Japan practices a strict one-written indictment system to prevent prejudgment. In other words, cases are generally not subject to preliminary hearings; once the prosecutor has completed the formalities, the case can proceed to court.
Hoping for a lucky break, Minamoto Tamako asked if the case could be withdrawn and reopened for investigation, and Kinoshita Shojin gave an affirmative answer:
No.
If the prosecutor believes the facts are unclear, he will request law enforcement agencies to conduct further investigations during the detention period; but now that the prosecutor has decided to prosecute, it means he is very satisfied with the case file and does not even need to send it back for revisions, and can go directly to court.
Ruined.
Yuko realized that she had made a serious mistake in her career that was irreparable, and she was extremely frustrated.
"Take it easy, maybe my reasoning is wrong?" Fushimi Shika offered a rare word of comfort.
"Where did I go wrong? I can't see the problem." Yuan Yuzi lay on the sofa, looking like a listless, lifeless fish.
"Just because you didn't see it doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist... Why don't you add another stamp, and I'll tell you where the flaws in this reasoning are." Fushimi Shika had no good intentions.
Yuan Yuzi snorted, ignored him, and listlessly turned over, lying on the sofa and burying her face in the cushions: "Tell me if you want, or don't."
It's clear that she really is Yu Yu.
Seeing this, Fushimi Shika lost interest in keeping him in suspense. He pursed his lips and said, "Didn't you ever wonder who sent this tape?"
"You know?" Yuan Yuzi quickly propped herself up, looking like an Ultraman looking up.
“I don’t know, but that’s enough to show that there was a third party involved in the case, right? There’s another question: how did Yoshikawa Rio know that her boyfriend’s disappearance was related to Fujiwara Homare?” Fushimi Shika slapped his thigh and slowly stood up.
“What do you mean by ‘suspicious point’? It’s not important at all.” Yuan Yuzi lay down again.
"Where's your detective spirit? You can't overlook even the smallest detail!" Fushimi Shika put on his coat and went to the entryway to change his shoes.
Gen Tamako turned slightly to the side, burying half her face in the cushion, and observed Fushimi Shika with one eye. Judging from his posture, it seemed that he was about to go out... Could it be that Fushimi-kun was going to investigate a case for her sake?
Thinking of this, she felt a little touched, a warmth welled up in her heart, and she didn't feel so depressed anymore.
"Are you going to investigate the case?" Gen Tamako, suddenly perked up, "I want to go too..."
"What case are you investigating? Wasn't the case closed?" Fushimi Shika said, sticking a shoehorn into his shoe heel. "Summer is almost here, and I want to eat ice cream... Do you want some? If so, I'll bring you one."
Yuan Yuzi angrily slammed her fist on the cushion, then slumped back down dejectedly, her voice muffled: "I want to eat."
When you're in a bad mood, you need to eat something sweet.
Fushimi Shika let out a soft "hmph" and slowly opened the door. He had barely stepped into the hallway when the door next door opened, and Kazama Takusai poked his head in, urging him when he was going to get a mental health test.
"Almost there, what's the rush!" Fushimi Shika said impatiently. "I'm on my way now, aren't I? Do you think it's easy to find an excuse to sneak out?"
Kazama Takusai looked him up and down, then said nothing more and prepared to close the door and go back to his room. Unexpectedly, Fushimi Shika suddenly reached out and blocked the door: "Wait a minute, there's something I need to talk to you about."
"What is it?" Kazama Takusai asked.
“I don’t think you’re in very good spirits,” Fushimi Shika, who had at least a level seven psychological counseling skill, could tell that Kazama Takusai’s condition had been deteriorating lately. “Why don’t you get a checkup or something?”
"No need."
Kazama Takusai tried to pull the door open with one hand, but couldn't budge it. Fushimi Shika's strength was greater than he had imagined.
"Since you won't go yourself, why should I go?" Fushimi Shika questioned.
"I'm not like you..."
“What’s the difference? Aren’t we all two eyes and one mouth? Didn’t you recently teach Minamoto no Tamako how to use a gun? What if you have a seizure during practice?” Fushimi Shika pointed at Kazama Takusai’s nose, making the same gesture as Homelander: “I don’t trust you either.”
Kazama Takusai was silent for a moment, then simply opened the door and said, "Okay, let's go together then."
Fushimi Shika nodded in satisfaction and asked, "Do you have a wheelchair at home?"
Kazama Takusai really does have one. He was shot during a mission and couldn't walk on his own after being discharged from the hospital, so he bought a wheelchair. After recovering, he couldn't bear to throw it away and it had been gathering dust at home for many years. He never expected that it would come to Fushimi Shika's attention today.
At Fushimi Shika's insistence, Kazama Takusai took out a wheelchair and pushed him downstairs. The latter originally planned to take a car directly to the psychiatric hospital, but Fushimi Shika caused a commotion halfway there, saying that he had some things to do and would be delayed for a while, letting Kazama Takusai go ahead.
"If you don't go, I won't go!" Kazama Takusai pulled hard on the wheelchair handle.
"I already told you to go first and then I'll go!" Fushimi Shika grabbed the street lamp with both hands and refused to leave.
"Trying to run away? You want to go back on your word?" Kazama Takusai was quite displeased.
“When did I say I was going to back out? I already said I had important business to attend to. Do you think everyone is as free as you are?” Fushimi Shika said seriously. Seeing that he didn’t seem to be faking it, Kazama Takusai simply let go of his hand and stood beside him with one hand on his hip: “Then I’ll accompany you to finish your ‘important business’ before we go to the hospital together.”
"How old are you? Are you still afraid to go to the hospital by yourself?" Fushimi Shika scoffed. "At your age, shouldn't you be liking hospital nurses?"
"Are you sick?" Kazama Takusai asked.
"I'm not sick, you are."
"You are sick!"
"Hey! You got all worked up over a joke! You're guilty, definitely guilty..."
"Stop!" Kazama Takusai waved his hand, unable to contain himself any longer, and interrupted, "Didn't you say you had important business to attend to? Hurry up and finish it, hurry up and check it, then we can all go home and not bother each other, okay?"
"You really want to come along?" Fushimi Shika asked playfully.
"Is that not allowed?" Kazama Takusai asked.
"What if I do something bad? Would you report me to Tamako?" Fushimi Shika asked rhetorically.
Kazama Takusai was silent for a moment, then slowly bent down, his gaze meeting Fushimi Shika's, his forehead etched with wrinkles: "Are you going to kill someone?"
Fushimi Shika gave him a look like an old man on the subway: "What kind of person do you take me for?"
"So you're instigating others to kill?" Kazama Takusai persisted.
"No, I'm going to see a lawyer," Fushimi Shika said bluntly. "Talking to a lawyer for a bit won't bother you, will it?"
Seeing that Kazama Takusai remained silent, Fushimi Shika carefully observed his expression and understood somewhat. He then added, "You're not a policeman anymore, so you're just sitting around doing nothing. Why don't you become my assistant? I'll pay you a salary, how about it?"
"I haven't fallen to that level yet." Kazama Takusai disagreed verbally, but his hands had already gripped the armrests of the wheelchair again.
"How can this be called depravity? When you were a detective, were you always honest? You even planned to torture me to extract a confession!"
Fushimi Shika smiled faintly, then lowered his voice and tempted her, "Working on cases within the system must be quite stressful, right? Sometimes you feel constrained as a detective, don't you? Now that you're working with me, you can really unleash your full potential..."
Kazama Takusai gave him a sudden shove, and Fushimi Shika's body jolted, almost being thrown off his wheelchair. He said, "Be careful or I'll dump you into the roadside ditch."
Fushimi Shika didn't take it to heart and didn't make a fuss. He changed his approach and continued to persuade her, saying, "Since you don't want to participate, I won't force you... But then again, it's not really appropriate to let me continue to act recklessly. Why don't you supervise me as an observer to prevent me from doing anything out of line?"
Kazama Takusai remained silent, glancing down at his watch, seemingly quite impatient.
"Anyway, you don't need to get involved. You just need to watch from the sidelines. If I do anything out of line, you can stop me anytime." Fushimi Shika raised his hands to show his sincerity.
"Do you think I can stop you?" Kazama Takusai straightened up.
"Didn't you bring a gun?" Fushimi Shika glanced at his waist. "I'm not Superman. I have a leg injury right now. Isn't that something you can decide for me?"
Kazama Takusai remained noncommittal. He patted the armrest and asked, "Where to?"
Fushimi Shika's scheme succeeded. He remained outwardly calm, took out his phone and business card, and called Attorney Kikuta, inviting him to a coffee shop to discuss business, saying he wanted to talk about Fujiwara Homare's case.
After listening, Attorney Kikuta asked Fushimi Shika to wait a moment, as someone nearby wanted to speak to him.
A few seconds later, another voice came through the receiver: "Fushimi-kun, are you still busy outside?"
Fushimi Shika recognized it; it was Director Fujiwara's voice. He scratched his nose, feeling like he was being pressured to pay a debt: "Yeah, busy with cases."
"Are there any other cases to handle? Haven't they already been submitted to the prosecutor?" Director Fujiwara's voice was very gentle: "I've seen them, and they've been handled very well. The witnesses and evidence are all there, and the verdict should be delivered in less than five minutes during the court hearing... Kujo Yui really has a good daughter."
Fushimi Shika knew that Director Fujiwara was being sarcastic, so he asked directly, "Do you still believe that Fujiwara Homare didn't kill anyone?"
"That's the truth, there's no denying it."
Director Fujiwara spoke calmly, but he was extremely agitated.
He was extremely disappointed. He had thought that Fushimi Shika was a sensible man, and that exchanging Fujiwara Homare's innocence for their happiness for the rest of their lives would be a worthwhile deal—he wouldn't have been so angry if Fushimi Shika had just delayed. But Minamoto no Tamako submitted the case file in less than 24 hours, which meant that Fushimi Shika hadn't taken his words to heart at all.
Since that's the case, there's no need for him to give Fushimi Shika any face.
Just as Director Fujiwara was about to hang up, he heard Fushimi Shika softly ask in return, "What if that's not the case?"
"Ok?"
“You’ve come to the right person,” Fushimi Shika said with a smile. “I’m very good at making excuses.”
