Chapter 490 What if we try again?

"Sheng Sheng, I just want to take care of you and see you and the baby doing well." Gu Rong's deep voice was full of helplessness. "That's all."

Lu Shengsheng stared at him. "I don't believe a single word you say."

“I know you’re short of money, and you can support this child on your own.” Gu Rong said earnestly, “But have you ever thought about it? You’re in a foreign country, with no family or even a single friend. If something happens to you, who will help you? Do you really expect an aunt who takes care of you and charges you a monthly salary to take responsibility?”

Lu Shengsheng remained silent. His words were too truthful and sharp, and for a moment she didn't know how to respond.

“I live next door to you. If you don’t want to see me, I can stay away. But if you need anything, I’m always here to help you.” Gu Rong looked at her with tender and affectionate eyes. “With the birth of your child, there are many things you need to do. You’ll need someone to help you.”

Lu Shengsheng asked, "And then?"

"Ok?"

"The baby will call you Dad when it's born?" she scoffed. "Dream on."

"Call me uncle, call me godfather, it doesn't matter what you call me," Gu Rong said in a low voice. "I just want you to be alright."

Lu Shengsheng didn't say anything more, not knowing what to say.

Gu Ronghui knew that she had taken her words to heart. "These things aren't urgent. You should rest well first. The doctor said that you need to keep a happy mood and not get angry."

Lu Shengsheng glared at him: "Who made me angry?"

"Me." Gu Rong replied readily, "It's my fault. I'm a bastard, a son of a bitch. After the baby is safely delivered, you can scold me however you want, okay?"

Lu Shengsheng turned her head away, remaining aloof and silent.

In addition to bringing her daily changes of clothes and personal items, the aunt also brought her some food.

After all that fuss, she was starving, and after a hearty meal, she let out a satisfied burp.

Gu Rong pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to her.

Lu Shengsheng pulled him over to wipe his mouth, "What are you still doing here? Waiting for me to treat you to dinner?"

Her lack of objection does not mean she agrees to him staying in the hospital.

"Auntie must be tired from taking care of you, how about I..."

"What?" Lu Shengsheng interrupted him.

Gu Ronghui didn't dare to anger her, so he reluctantly got up and said, "Fine, I'll go."

Lu Shengsheng pointed at him and warned, "If I find out that others misunderstand you as Shuangshuang's father, I will definitely kill you."

Gu Rong nodded, her tone both indulgent and resigned, "Okay."

Turning to the aunt, I said, "Thank you for your hard work tonight."

"It's no trouble at all, it's my duty," the auntie smiled.

After Gu Rong left, the aunt helped her to the bathroom to wash up, and stood by her side to keep her company in case she fell.

"I think your ex-husband is actually quite nice, and he doesn't seem to care whose child you're carrying," the aunt casually remarked. "Why don't you consider him?"

"What are you considering?" Lu Shengsheng muttered, toothpaste in her mouth. "Considering making him a cuckold's father and getting a daughter for free? Does he deserve it? How many keys does he even have to be worthy of it!"

The aunt didn't understand her swearing technique, but said earnestly, "A woman always needs a place to belong, especially since you have a child. Imagine how painful it would be for your child to be laughed at for not having a father when they go to school!"

“She had a father,” Lu Shengsheng said stubbornly. “Her father was a very, very good person! It’s just that he’s gone…”

Her voice choked with emotion.

The aunt immediately panicked, "Oh, it's my fault, let's not talk about this anymore. Miss, don't be sad... you can't cry anymore, it's not good for the child."

Lu Shengsheng forced back her tears. "Auntie, tomorrow I want to eat steamed pork ribs with rice flour, meatball soup, and some bok choy."

"Okay, I'll go back and make it for you first thing tomorrow morning." ...

The next morning, the aunt went outside to buy a serving of chicken soup wontons. After she finished eating and tidied up, she rushed to the market to buy groceries.

Lu Shengsheng played on her phone for a while, then couldn't help but yawn and went back to sleep.

When I woke up, the room was filled with the aroma of food.

Gu Rong turned to look at her, "Auntie will make dumplings for you this afternoon, I'll bring them over for you."

Lu Shengsheng threw off the covers, got out of bed, and sat down at the table.

Gu Rong opened the insulated lunchbox; it contained the food she had specified yesterday.

Lu Shengsheng took a bite: "Auntie's cooking is still the best."

"Is that so?" Gu Rong glanced meaningfully at the food on the table.

Lu Shengsheng had been with him for several years, so how could she not know what he was thinking?

"If you want to eat, grab your bowl and chopsticks and sit down to eat." She said indifferently, then added after a pause, "Just eat, no more talking."

Gu Rong smiled and said, "Okay."

He took a set of chopsticks and sat down, first serving two bowls of soup, one for her and one for himself.

The auntie cooks home-style dishes, but they taste great and are much lighter than those in restaurants.

Neither of them spoke as they ate dinner together. Gu Rong tidied up the table, while Lu Shengsheng yawned, wanting to go to sleep again.

"You can't just lie there all day; you need to walk around a bit more," Gu Rong kindly reminded her.

Lu Shengsheng glared at him unhappily.

Gu Rong replied, "That's what the doctor said. You should read the doctor's instructions yourself."

He raised his chin; the doctor's orders were hanging at the foot of her bed.

Lu Shengsheng went over and took a look, explaining the level of care and the details; there really was a lot of movement involved.

Annoyance flashed across her face. "I don't want to leave. I'm so tired."

Gu Rong thought for a moment, "I'll go borrow a wheelchair. If you get tired, I'll push you back."

Lu Shengsheng was somewhat tempted, but she was afraid that people would think she was being pretentious by being pregnant and needing to use a wheelchair.

“You’re pregnant, pregnant women have the most important things to do.” Gu Ronghui seemed to see through her concerns. “Since when have you cared about what others think?”

"Who cares?" Lu Shengsheng said insincerely, gave a light snort, and walked straight out.

Gu Rong followed behind her, leaving the ward to borrow a wheelchair from the nurses' station.

Lu Shengsheng didn't wait for him and went straight into the elevator.

Gu Rong borrowed a wheelchair and got off. After looking around, he saw her sitting on a bench, watching the children playing in the distance, her eyes full of gentle smiles.

He walked over and sat down, interlacing his fingers in front of him, his thin lips pursed. "If I had said I would stay, would you have given birth to our child?"

Lu Shengsheng glanced at him and said, "I used to have a lot of unrealistic fantasies, now it's your turn."

The child is gone, and that's it; all assumptions are meaningless.

"I just can't accept it! How could you decide our child's life or death based on just one sentence from me!" Gu Ronghui's dark eyes flashed with resentment. "You didn't even try to hold on a little longer, or even try one more time!"

"Why should I fight for it?" Lu Shengsheng retorted, a faint smile playing on her fair face. "Gu Ronghui, your uterus is mine, the right to nurture life is mine, it's my body, and it's my freedom!"
