Chapter 906, Section 116: The Netherhound's Considerations
While the Scavengers were being eradicated in Dogtown and order was being restored with the help of the NCPD, the Ghost Hounds who had left earlier also learned about what was happening in Dogtown.
Bennett and Gago's hounds did not live to see their beloved Colonel Hansen return. All they knew was the news of Colonel Hansen's death and that KK had become the current ruler of Dogtown.
"KK, it's actually KK!"
Knowing the current situation in Dogtown, Gago was incredulous. He had never imagined that KK would be the last one to appear in the battle between the Hound of the Underworld and New America, nor had he expected that KK would become the final victor.
This is equivalent to what? It's like a giant squid and a sperm whale fighting in the sea. Before they can decide a winner, a deep-sea fishing boat throws down a net and catches the giant squid, leaving the stunned sperm whale behind. After a while, the sperm whale also runs away.
Then they are like the tentacles that were bitten off by the sperm whale during the giant squid's fishing process. Now they not only have to think about things related to the fishing net, but also about whether the sperm whale will target them and use them to fill its stomach.
The most outrageous thing is that the conventional fishing distance for deep-sea fishing is generally around 200 meters underwater, while the giant squid's range is from 300 meters to 3,000 meters. This is absolutely unexpected for both sides.
But that's exactly what happened.
How could Gago not know that Carl had designs on Dogtown?
Although Gago didn't know Carl very well, he was familiar with Carl's style of doing things. Based on his past experience and understanding of Carl, if Carl wanted to take action against Dogtown, he could have taken advantage of the wave of reconstruction in Taiping State to directly flatten Dogtown long ago. There was no need to wait until now.
Hansen had ordered the Hounds to be on high alert for over a month, only to find that the expansion of the Pacific State reconstruction had stopped at the border with Dogtown. Gago breathed a sigh of relief at that point.
Why didn't you seize such a good opportunity, and instead waited until now?
You have to understand, good opportunities don't come all the time. Karl probably couldn't have known about the events that would have happened before the president's plane crash. For Karl, that was the best time to unify Dogtown. He had no reason to think about things that far in advance.
In Night City, people who can think about next week's events are already quite idle; they're more likely to be thinking about unexpected events a month or even several months into the future.
That's not very realistic.
Unless Karl truly had the patience to wait for the so-called 'best' opportunity, and actually seized it and took action, there was only one reason for Karl to get involved in this chaos.
That is, he originally didn't intend to get involved, but something caught his attention, so he came to do the work and incidentally took over Dogtown.
But is this possible?
A spur-of-the-moment decision!?
Gagozab's mind was in complete chaos. His once sharp thoughts were now tangled up like a messy ball of yarn, leaving him unsure of what to do next.
Are they going to continue escaping using the remaining ghost hounds?
Where could he run to? The people of New America haven't gone far, and even if they did run away, where could they go after losing Dogtown as their home?
Breaking through the blockade is no easy task; almost every member of the Ghost Hound team is now injured.
Even Gago, who had little combat ability and was well protected, had bullet grazes on his face. If his bodyguard Charles hadn't tackled him to the ground in the nick of time, Gago's head might have been blown apart during the evacuation. Where could these people possibly run?
Even if they were to become mercenaries for others, with their former Ghosthound background, who could they possibly trust? Even if they did get work, they would likely be offered a low price they had no choice but to accept, and then be sent to their deaths as lowly laborers.
Not to mention the equipment problem. After losing Dogtown as a weapons supplier and Dogtown's own weapons factory, they can't even maintain the weapons they have. Even if they can take some other guns and disassemble them to make do, how much of their combat effectiveness will they have left after losing the equipment they are used to?
Knowing that escaping with the Ghost Hound would be a dead end, Gago's mind began to work. Perhaps people can perform even better in extreme situations; Gago's mind was now exceptionally clear.
Driven by the will to survive, Gago realized that this was the only way for them to live, and the only path they could take.
That's back to Dogtown.
Why go back to Dogtown?
He sought refuge with KK.
Forget about KK killing Colonel Hansen for now. This kind of thing is pretty much the same in small street gangs and organizations. It's just that one leader kills another leader, but there aren't many of the underlings fighting to the death. Once the fight is pretty much over and the boss is dead, they just switch sides and that's it. Nobody really doesn't value their own life.
While the Ghosthounds aren't like the Animal Gang in terms of who's the strongest or most capable to be the leader, Gago doesn't have any real loyalty to Hansen.
He was a very capable man, and the reason he gained Hansen's trust was that his actions and interests were the same as Hansen's. So, while Hansen was alive, he was indeed willing to repay Hansen with 'loyalty' and work hard for Hansen.
But now that Hansen is dead, why should he be loyal? Blame the dead Hansen.
"A good bird chooses a good tree to perch on, and a wise minister chooses a good lord to serve." Gago was ready to use this Chinese proverb to answer KK.
Bennett
Having made up his mind, Gago turned to look at Chester Bennett.
Despite his deep-seated resentment towards Bennett in the past, he ultimately decided to put aside his old grudges and try to win him over, given the relatively smooth cooperation recently.
After all, the more people who sided with KK, the more weight their words carried.
However, Bennett's reaction completely exceeded his expectations.
"Damn KK! Damn New America!"
Bennett slammed his fist heavily onto the hood of the car in front of him, the powerful blow causing the vehicle that had brought them out to shudder.
Under Gago's gaze, Bennett's eyes were filled with anger. He noticed Gago's gaze and looked over. The prosthetic eye that was changing and glowing red made Gago's heart tremble.
'Is this guy having a cyberbullying episode?'
In Gago's memory, Bennett had no cyberpsychotic tendencies, but he also generally didn't have those tendencies before each cyberpsychotic episode, so he became secretly wary and signaled his bodyguard Charles to come closer.
But just as Gago was ready, the first thing Bennett said was something he hadn't expected.
"Take the rest of the men and go join KK Bargago."
